He met Patsy in 17 and considered her his Jackie Kennedy. At the time, he was divorced and failing in business. A year later, he married her. A year later, her father bailed him out of the failing business. That business, too, failed but apparently Don Paugh bailed him out again. This time, the company flourished. This time, the company merged and John became part of a bigger company, not his own man. He was on his way to the big corporate structure hed wanted to join in 17 when he failed to make it with AT&T.

Once he was there, success came rapidly. The man who couldnt make it on his own flourished once he hooked up with other people. Don Paugh was proud of the new company, calling it the Cadillac and Lincoln of the industry. Paugh was clearly an important part of the company, as far as John was concerned. Paugh always had work there and lived in Boulder away from his own family, as did John.

Patsy and her mother and sisters were apparently a drag on the company. Nedra, Pam and Polly were dumped and Patsy, a proven advertising manager (work she was doing when John met her), was kept out. Granted, Patsy was pregnant twice and had cancer. Granted also that she may not have wanted to work at Access Graphics (although she did at MicroSouth). She did, however, have nannies and she did supervise redecorating houses and Access Graphics offices, organize company luncheons (at least one of which was a major $0,000 production). She was instrumental in local charities and schools. She obviously had the skills and desire to work.

Ironically, Patsy functioned successfully on her own, managing two pregnancies and cancer, major house renovations and other projects. She was acknowledged as being very good at organizing people and events. John, however, was essentially a failure when he was on his own. (I use the word failure in view of the Ramseys own expressed point of view; money is obviously very important to them both. Many thousands of people are successful in their own small businesses, doing no better than John did with his. That is one difference I see in the Ramseys and the majority of people. Its not a bad difference, just one.) John was well-educated (arguably better educated than Patsy), had good credentials and background. He was a nice guy with a quiet demeanor that didnt fit in with the highly competitive management environment of major corporations, such as AT&T. John was quoted, after becoming successful with Access Graphics, as saying he would be comfortable living in a log cabin with little money. His background seems to confirm that.

Do my essay on The Talented Mr. Ramsey CHEAP !

In terms of financial success, the Paughs were a great influence on John Ramsey. Nedra and Patsy have obvious and vital ambition toward recognition on the world stage. John seemed to be satisfied being well-liked and successful in his own little world. The Paughs influenced him, apparently, to strive for more. Don Paugh financed him and followed him to the big company in the new city. Patsy made sure the city of Boulder knew who the Ramseys were (although probably only people who cared about Access Graphics, parties and pageants really knew about them).

But look what happened once John reached a peak

-- He became part of the cutthroat business world

-- He drove people out who didnt please him or didnt produce, in his view

-- His company far exceeded the company that gave him his chance

Its possible that John was embarrassed by her flamboyance, and yet was charmed at the same time. Its possible that Patsy was angered by his lack of flamboyance, yet comforted by his solid personality. This couple had been married for 11 years before the big money came to them (Access was probably bringing in a good income prior to the acquisition by CalComp/Lockheed but certainly not in the millions of dollars). Their relationship would have been well established by then. The influx of $8 million dollars plus must have had a serious impact on them, and not just in terms of what they could purchase. Suddenly, with good legal representation, either could live quite well without the other in case of divorce. As Patsy herself said recently, The almighty dollar does strange things to people.

.......

These peoples lives changed dramatically when the almighty dollar came into their lives. John stayed up late with a calculator in bed working out finances. Patsy traveled around with a six-year-old girl made up to look like a 0-year-old Las Vegas showgirl.

Then -- wham! The end of 16 was the end of that. John spent his money on lawyers and Patsy lost her showgirl. Life in Boulder by J.A. Ramsey

Henderson

If you order your research paper from our custom writing service you will receive a perfectly written assignment on Henderson. What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. Specify your order details, state the exact number of pages required and our custom writing professionals will deliver the best quality Henderson paper right on time.

Henderson is always contingent on other people. He is consistently trying to find an individual that he can confide all his thoughts to, someone he can rely on, someone he can feel affections for, someone he can not just call his friend but actually be his friend. All through the novel, Henderson has been searching for someone to be a person he can love.

In the very beginning, we are introduced to Frances. She and Henderson were married for twenty-two years. While he is married to her, he has an affair with Lily when he goes to America. There marriage ended and Henderson decides to marry Lily.

Lily becomes very much in love with Henderson the moment she saw him I believe Lily is just as much as a necessity to Henderson as he is to her. Throughout the novel, Henderson remembers very meticulous and minute reminiscences of Lily. Whether it's how she has lost her four upper incisors (page 8) or the time she was shopping and he remembered her wearing a hat and a white piqu dress, with white shows (page 10). When he sees her coming out of the taxi after a long time of not seeing her, he directly says, "Lily! How are you kid? Where did you come from (page 15)?" This quote really shows Henderson devotion and wanting of Lily. But after a while his needs aren't met and Lily is not good enough for him. He wants something else, but he does not know what. To find this, he decides to take a journey to Africa.

When Henderson decides to go to Africa, he travels there with Charlie, an old class friend. After only three weeks of being with Charlie, Henderson says to Charlie, "All I know is that this isn't the place for me (page 4)." Henderson did not feel that this was the place for him. He is convinced Charlie has changed and Henderson does not want to be with him anymore.

Custom Essays on Henderson

Right when Henderson is introduced to Romilayu, he begins to become fond of him. Romilayu is a hired native that is supposed to exhibit African villages to Henderson. Henderson has so much of a fondness for him, that he states his keenness of Romilayu bluntly by saying, "I had found the fellow I wanted, just the right man (page 44)." Soon after that he says, " I had great trust in Romilayu, the old fellow (page 45)." And almost immediately afterward he says, " To have found a man like Romilayu, who sensed what I was looking for, was a great piece of luck (page 45)." Even in the end of Henderson's journey, Henderson talks about the goodness of Romilayu. He says to him, "Romilayu, I'm learning more about your good points all the time (page 0)." I really believe that out of every individual, Romilayu is one of the closest to gaining Henderson's trust. The resistance of dependence demonstrates that even Romilayu isn't respectable enough to have all of Henderson's trust.

Henderson travels to a village where he meats Itelo. Itelo is a Prince that astoundingly, forms a friendship with Henderson by having a wrestling match amongst them. To make Itelo and the rest of his tribe exultant to him, Henderson decides to get rid of the frogs in the drinking water. When he bombs the water and accidentally fractures a wall that holds the water (water spills out), Henderson has to end his camaraderie with Itelo and leave the town.

After Itelo, Henderson meets a king named Dahfu. Instantly, Henderson falls in love with the king and he says, "I had an impulse to confide in him-that was how he made me feel, trusting (page 15)." Dahfu and Henderson share a bond like no other two people. Henderson talk about how he was taken with him. He even goes as far as saying how he adores him. This admiration is showed by him saying, "I was grateful to him, does this. I was his friend then. In fact, at this moment, I loved the guy (page 1)." Throughout his time with King Dahfu, all Henderson can talk about is how much he loves Dahfu. So when Henderson finally gives his heart to someone, he must have been crushed when Dahfu died. He even says, "I have a punchy hearts. It's had more beatings than it can take. They've kicked it around far too much (page 15). Dahfu was the only man that got to Henderson's heart and after Dahfu's death, Henderson says to Romilayu, "You see I'm beside myself (page 17). He was my friend."

After Dahfu's death, Henderson tells Romilayu, "We have to stick together." But as the days pass Romilayu asks Henderson, "You be my friend, sah (page 4)?" And when Henderson responds, all he can say is, "Yes, you're my friend. But what about Dahfu? Wasn't he my friend, too?" This illustrates that Dahfu was the only individual that Henderson could entrust.

The last person that we see Henderson being a companion to is a kid he meets on the plane. He tells the kid, "Im going to take a walk. Will you come with me?" This reveals that Henderon is still looking for the individual that he can give all his love nad thoughts to.

Earth art refers to movements of artists with wide ranging goals. All of their pieces were created in nature with materials such as stones, dirt, and leaves. Most of the works are sculptures but there are some paintings. The pieces show things like the slow process of erosion and the movement of planets, stars, or the sun. Earth art captures an artist's impression of nature. Rather than an exact duplicate of nature, the works are the artist's own interpretations of the essence of nature. The movement began to develop in the late 160's and early 170's

Earth art does not often have an exhibit like other paintings and smaller sculptures do. The formations of the works are sometimes thousands of feet in area and some are hundreds of miles in area. An example of the tremendous size of the sculptures is the work done by Robert Smithson, titles Spiral Jetty. It was completed in 170 and extended 1500 feet in the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Today it can only be witnessed by documentation.

One of the most gigantic earth art pieces is still under construction by James Turrell. Since 17 he has been sculpting a natural volcanic site titled Roden Crater. One way to look at it is a giant eye looking straight up into space. You could lie at the bottom of the eye and see only the sky, perfectly framed in the crater's rim with no structures or guided-tour audio to get in the way.

Earth art is a more hands on type of style. In order to get the full affect you have to physically stand or walk around the art. In some of the pieces you actually need to be in the art itself. It is ever-changing art work, both for the good and bad. The earth's natural erosion process corrupts the artwork over time. But a good part about the ever-changing nature of earth art is that you always find something new about the piece. I think that earth art is unique because it actually uses a large area of the earth to make a work of art. It is not just a picture or a small sculpture.

All myths have origins in what someone once deemed as the truth. They are usually dubbed myths after many years of either cultural change or intellectual change. Horatio Algers tale of Ragged Dick was very popular during its time and many people accepted his step by step method to success through hard work. However, most people today would agree success is not as easy to obtain as Alger describes. In fact, some describe Ragged Dick as socially destructive. Harlon Dalton, as an example, argues that Algers tale is actually destructive to American culture. Dalton asserts that the myth ignores race and thereby makes assumptions that are not true in todays society where minorities do not have the same opportunities as the majority. Unfortunately, Dalton is ignoring the underlying moral of Ragged Dick and is simply attacking what makes the story a myth. Ragged Dick is indeed a myth, but its message to the reader is one of the fruits that result from hard, honest work.

Daltons main argument is that Algers three basic messages are counterproductive to American Culture. He describes the …three basic messages (1) each of us is judged solely on her or his own merits; () we each have a fair opportunity to develop those merits; and () ultimately, merit will out. (0). Dalton then describes how different races are judged differently and the minority races are not only prejudiced against, but suppressed so that they do not have the same opportunities that white people do. This paper will not debate whether or not Daltons assertions of race are true, but Dalton does a relatively nice job of proving these messages are found in Ragged Dick. Unfortunately, it makes no difference whether Dalton is right or not. This paper will assume Dalton is correct about the three messages, but it makes no difference. Indeed, the falsity of these messages about personal merits proves Ragged Dick to be a myth. I agree that the tale is a myth in that no misfortunate kid on the street can have the stroke of luck Dick encounters simply because he is an honest, hard working child, but Daltons misconception lies in his ignoring the essential message from Algers tale.

If one ignores questions of race, gender, and political propriety from Ragged Dick, one simple overlapping message is clear throughout the entire novel. Hard, honest work will advance you in society, financially and personally. By financially, this means you will gain more money, increasing your general financial assets. By personal gains in society, this means hard, honest work will earn respect not only from others, but from yoursel f as well, living happier. Dalton ignores this message and focuses on minor messages of merit and whatnot. True, hard, honest work will not earn success for everyone as described exactly above, but this is what makes the story of Dick a myth. Dick literally goes from rags to riches simply because he is honest and works hard. Obviously, this is not going to happen to many people.

However, just because the extreme result will not occur does not make Algers novel harmful to society. Dalton asks (with obvious sarcasm), Does anyone, for example, honestly believe that any Supreme Court justice in recent memory was nominated solely on the basis of merit (however defined)? (). He is making the assertion that Algers idealistic world does not apply to todays reality. Indeed it does not, but what is wrong with bringing a little idealism into todays society? Dalton says this is harmful, but even he partially concedes, admitting …it can help to pull people in the direction they want to go (). However, once Dalton concedes this fact, he does not pursue its ramifications on his argument of Alger being destructive but instead goes on to his next objection.

Dalton continues in saying that Alger attempts to maintain the order of races in American society. Algers myth serves to maintain the racial pecking order (). He continues in asserting that The Alger myth encourages people to blink at the many barriers to racial equality… (). This statement is incorrect because people do not take the story for face value, they realize it is a myth and too idealistic. When the reader reads the scene in which Dick …no sooner saw the boy fall [in the water] than he resolved to rescue him (08), Dicks race is not called into question! If everyone acted as honestly and selflessly as Dick, what a wonderful society we would live in. But somehow Dalton sees this as harmful to society and strives to convince the reader Dicks selflessness encourages racism. Dalton ignores the one message of honesty, selflessness, and hard work by making general, mostly politically correct statements about Ragged Dick and applying them against American culture. Finally, Dalton ends his argument with a concluding criticism of Algers novel. Dalton believes Alger is saying …we live in a land of unlimited potential, but Dalton contradicts Alger, believing …we live today in an era of diminished possibilities (5). Again, Dalton is correct, but he is only re-affirming the fact that Ragged Dick is a myth, something most people agree on. True, the possibilities and the American Dream is not as prevalent as it may have been years ago, but this does not diminish Algers message. Dick lives his life working hard and honestly, selflessly giving to others. Sure, the results of his work may be extreme, but this does not lessen the good message Alger is portraying to his reader.

Horatio Algers Ragged Dick is the story of a young boy struggling to reach the top, obtaining riches through hard work and his selflessness toward others. Dalton argues that the novel is detrimental to society, but he is simply arguing over Alger vs. reality. Algers novel is indeed a myth in that Dick would need a lot of luck in reality to go from rags to riches as he does. However, Dicks good spirit, honesty, and selflessness are characteristics we all should strive to have. Dalton is ignoring these wonderful characteristics by putting Ragged Dick in politically correct terms. Forget the race issues; it is a tale, a myth, of hard work and decency in which a young boy is greatly rewarded for his kindness. There is nothing threatening society in a myth like that.

1.) Children learn to use oral and written language in similar ways.

The author states in Starting on the Write Foot, "Children learn to read and write in the same way they learn to speak. It is a natural and uneven process. It sometimes happens slowly and at other times in spurts and burst." (Butler, J. Liss, C. Sterner, P. (1) Pg.).

Children learn to use oral and written language in similar ways because they both develop progressively. Example babbles to develop to scribbles. As the oral language develops so does a child's writing. The next step in oral language is when they string along words. This similar process in writing is scribbling in a line. The next stage in oral language is when sounds have meaning. This is when sounds have meaning. This is similar to the way children use the sign concept in written language. When a child goes through the echolalia stage, repeat everything they hear, this is similar to the tracing stage that a child goes through in written language. Another stage that a child goes through in oral language is fluency. This is similar to conventional writing. Both oral and written language moves the whole to the part.

There are more ways that oral and written language are learned in similar Both are innate. Children have a natural curiosity. They want to learn and explore. They bother are a process that need to be moved through at your own pace. Parents need to model behavior. They also need to encourage and motivate the child. If they child is motivated then they will be able to explore without hesitation. They do not need to push the child into something that they are not ready for.

Another factor is experimental, trial, and error. A child's early writing is a perfect example of experimental writing. The child also experiments with oral language in a similar way. They both are experienced by doing. The best way for a child to speak and write is to practice. They learn oral and written language by using trail and error method. They need to be surrounded by print from the time that they are born. This helps them understand oral and written language from the beginning.

Written and oral language are both a complicated system. They both need to be learned with meaning intent. A child has to connect meaning to what they learn. You cannot just randomly label things. You have to label things that would be meaningful to a child. The something applies to oral language. A child need to learn thing that they understand and has some meaning to them.

#.) Because meaning is at the heart of all languages, insisting on accuracy at all stages in the writing process results in an emphasis away from meaning therefore, causing needless difficulties for young learners.

Children learn written language through use. They also learn in a meaning group. Children do not understand the functions of language until they connect meaning with them. They also learn language from their parents. The author states in Starting on the Write Foot, "Children imitate the reading and writing that adults do and practice it over and over. When children have enough time to explore, and play, they learn literacy." (Butler, J. Liss, C. Sterner, P. (1) Pg.). For example Katelin and I practice writing together. We write notes back and forth to each other, interactional function. I encourage her writing. She knows that I am not worried about whether or not her spelling is correct.

When children are learning to write don't encourage accuracy, this will distract them from wanting to learn. If they are frustrated they will not learn. The authors states in The Beginnings of Writing, "With any encouragement at all, most children will not hesitate to produce things that they call 'writing,' even if they have not been taught to spell words or even how to form letters." (Temple, C. Nathan, R. Temple, F. & Burris, N. (1) Pg. 8). It is important to allow children the opportunities and encouragement to engage in writing activities. Even if it is before handwriting and spelling instruction has occurred.

We need to also provide models for the children. Things that are meaningful. Label only thing that have meaning to the children. Children need to know that their writing is important. If something is meaningful to a child, even if the parents or teachers do not understand it, it holds meaning to the child. If something is meaningful to a child, even if the parents or teachers do not understand it, it holds meaning to the child.

Children use strategies for early writing. Some of these are tracing, coping, generating. These are an important process for children to go through. Copying allows children to correct their own writing. It also allows them to produce their own standard letter forms. Generating letters is what the child will gravitate towards.

In The Stranger, Albert Camus portrays Meursault, the books narrator and main character, as aloof, detached, and unemotional. He does not think much about events or their consequences, nor does he express much feeling in relationships or during emotional times. He displays an impassiveness throughout the book in his reactions to the people and events described in the book. After his mothers death he sheds no tears; seems to show no emotions. He displays limited feelings for his girlfriend, Marie Cardona, and shows no remorse at all for killing an Arab. His reactions to life and to people distances him from his emotions, positive or negative, and from intimate relationships with others, thus he is called by the books title, the stranger. While this behavior can be seen as a negative trait, there is a young woman who seems to want to have a relationship with Meursault and a neighbor who wants friendship. He seems content to be indifferent, possibly protected from pain by his indifference.

Meursault rarely shows any feeling when in situations which would, for most people, elicit strong emotions. Throughout the vigil, watching over his mothers dead body, and at her funeral, he never cries. He is, further, depicted enjoying a cup of coffee with milk during the vigil, and having a smoke with a caretaker at the nursing home in which his mother died. The following day, after his mothers funeral, he goes to the beach and meets a former colleague named Marie Cardona. They swim, go to a movie, and then spend the night together. Later in their relationship, Marie asks Meursault if he wants to marry her. He responds that it doesnt matter to him, and if she wants to get married, he would agree. She then asks him if he loves her. To that question he responds that he probably doesnt, and explains that marriage really isnt such a serious thing and doesnt require love. This reaction is fairly typical of Meursault as portrayed in the book. He appears to be casual and indifferent about life events. Nothing seems to be very significant to him. Later on in the book, after he kills an Arab, not once does he show any remorse or guilt for what he did. Did he really feel nothing? Camus seems to indicate that Meursault is almost oblivious and totally unruffled and untouched by events and people around him. He is unwilling to lie, during his trial, about killing the Arab. His reluctance to get involved in defending himself results in a verdict of death by guillotine. Had Meursault been engaged in his defense, explaining his actions, he might have been set free.

Meursaults unresponsive behavior, distant from any apparent emotions, is probably reinforced by the despair which he sees open and feeling individuals experience. He observes, for example, Raymond cheated on and hurt by a girlfriend, and sees his other neighbor, Salamano, very depressed when he loses a dear companion, his dog. Meursaults responses are very different, he doesnt get depressed at death nor does he get emotionally involved. He appears to be totally apathetic. Thus, he seems to feel no pain and is protected from lifes disappointments.

Sometimes a person like Meursault can be appealing to others because he is so non-judgmental and uncritical, probably a result of indifference rather than sympathetic feelings. His limited involvement might attract some people because an end result of his distance is a sort of acceptance of others, thus he is not a threat to their egos. Raymond Sintes, a neighbor who is a pimp, seems to feel comfortable with Meursault. Sintes does not have to justify himself because Meursault doesnt comment on how Sintes makes money or how he chooses to live his life. Even though Meursault shows no strong emotions or deep affection, Marie, his girlfriend, is still attracted and interested in him. She is aware of, possibly even fascinated by, his indifference. Despite the seemingly negative qualities of this unemotional man, people nevertheless seem to care for him.

There are individuals who, because of different or strange behavior, might be outcasts of society, but find, in spite of or because of their unconventional behavior, that there are some people who want to be a part of their lives. Meursault, an asocial person is such an individual. His behavior, while not antagonistic or truly antisocial, is distant, yet it does not get in the way of certain relationships. While there are some people who might find such relationships unsatisfying and limited, Meursault and those he is connected to seem to be content with their friendships. His aloofness, though, may not have saved him from suffering. It might actually have been the cause of the guilty verdict at his trial for killing the Arab. Withdrawing from involvement with people or life events might not mean total isolation or rejection but it does not necessarily protect an individual from pain or a bad end.

In the United States there is a major controversy about the legal drinking. In 186

Congress passed the law that all states must have the minimum drinking age from eighteen years

old to twenty-one years of age (Hyde and Setaro ). Many people believe that the legal drinking

age should be lowered to eighteen years of age. Others, insist on keeping the legal drinking age at

Order Custom Drinking Age paper

a minimum of twenty-one years old. The drinking age should not be lowered to eighteen years old

because the teenagers performance in school will decrease, younger teenagers are more inclined

to experiment drinking, and by keeping the minimum drinking age to twenty-one decreases the

number of crime and drug use.

First, if the age of drinking alcohol is lowered to a younger age the teenagers performance

in school will decrease. By lowering the age most teenagers will begin to suffer from alcohol

related problems. Over a period of time the drinking of alcohol will interfere with them

academically and psychologically (Hyde and Setaro 4). Students will start to slack off and not care

about their responsibility in going to school and doing their school work. The teenagers grades will

begin to decrease drastically and the student's image of college will also decline (Hyde and Setaro

4).

Second of all, many researchers believe that by lowering the age to eighteen years old,

alcohol will be highly available to even younger teenagers. The behavior of an eighteen year old is

usually very influential on younger teens from 15-17 years of age (Hyde and Setaro 5). Younger

teenagers tend to mimic the behavior of a person who is near their age opposed to someone who

much older than they are ( Hyde and Setaro 5). Therefore, an eighteen year olds younger siblings

or peers will drink too. Research has found that the lower the age of drinking the more greater

the chance that a teenager will acquire a drinking disorder in the future (Hyde and Setaro 4).

Alcohol and Health reports,

" During the transition years between adolescence and young adulthood

there appears to be little continuity in drinking behavior, and drinking level

tend to decline substantially by age thirty " (Vogler and Bartz ).

Finally, a problem with teenagers is that they have not yet fully matured and not able to

have good judgment, even when sober. Alcohol causes a persons judgment to become even worse

(Vogler and Bartz 8). Jim Hall, Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, agrees with

the legal drinking age at twenty-one and states, "State age-1 laws are one of the most effective

public policies ever implemented to the Nation..." (Jim Hall 4). At the age of eighteen, most

teenagers believe that that's the age of maturing and independence. When having an alcohol

beverage in their hands they believe that they can do what they please because of the fact that at

their age they are now "independent." Studies have shown that the manner of drinking at a

certain age will be much different than at a later age because of the lack of maturity (Vogler and

Bartz ). Usually teenagers are more active and daring than most adults and are easily prone to

accidents (Vogler and Bartz 8). By increasing the age to 1 years old it has decreased the number

of drunk driving and fatal accidents. Another concern of teenagers is how alcohol has a close

association to drugs and usually when someone drinks, illegal drugs, such as marijuana, are

associated (O'Malley and Johnson 85-). Also, when the legal drinking age was increased, the

number of arrest called DUI (driving under the influence) reduced (Hyde and Setaro 5).

As stated above, the drinking age should not be lowered to eighteen years old, but should

be kept at a minimum drinking age of 1 years old. This is because the performance of the

teenagers will decrease in school, much younger teenagers are inclined to experiment drinking

alcohol at a younger age, and by having the minimum drink age at 1 years old it reduces the

number crime and drug usage. Most importantly, the teenager's grades will decrease and the

academic work will not be done. Also, alcohol will be more available to much younger teenagers

because of their older siblings or friends. The younger the drinking age the greater the chance is

for a teenager to acquire a drinking disorder in the future. Lastly, because teenagers have not yet

fully matured and tend to have bad judgment, the legal drinking age was made 1 years old. By

increasing the age, it lowered the number of arrest, illegal drugs such as marijuana, fatal accidents

and crime. In conclusion, it is essential that the drinking age should not be lowered to a younger

age. Teenagers are not reliable enough to make their own decision in this situation, therefore,

someone should make it for them until they reach a reasonable age.

In a small town in Kansas a family of four were murdered for no apparent reason. The murderers ran for a few years and finally they were caught, tried, and accused for murder. In 165 they were hung for the crime.

In the story a family was killed for no reason. This well respected farming family had no enemies, and no quarrels. Although they were wealthy, Mr. Clutter

never kept cash in the house. The whole region and eventually the country was

shocked by the randomness and brutality of the act, in much the same way it was

Order custom research paper on in cold blood

by the 15 Oklahoma City bombing. The two men in which didnt even know the

Clutter family went into their house and shot all four of them.

There were two main characters. Dick is the first one that I will talk about.

Dick was years old and he did not have the best character. Dick was one who

helped participate in the killing of the Clutter family. I didnt like him from

the very beginning. He struck me as the type that is your friend one minute and

enemy the next. Perry is the other charecter that I will talk about. Perry

wasnt as bad as Dick but yet he still struck me as having a bad character for

what he did to the family. It took me awhile to get a good impression of Perry.

Perry was a really nice guy and I think that he just got mixed in with the wrong

crowd. At the beginning, when they first started to kill all of the family

members, they had them tied up and Perry didnt want to kill the family but he

thought that if he acted like he was gonna kill Mr. Clutter then Dick would stop

him. Then they would let them all go but when Dick didnt stop him Perry became

a mad man and went ahead and killed the whole family. Later at the gallows Perry

started to have second thoughts a little to late so he tried to starve himself

but didnt succeed. He was finally hung, during the hanging period he apologized

to everyone for what he did.

This is it, this is it, this had to be it, theres the school, theres

the garage, now we turn south. To Perry, it seemed as though Dick was muttering

jubilant mumbo-jumbo. They left the highway, sped through a deserted Holcomb,

and crossed the Santa Fe tracks. The bank, that must be the bank, no we turn

west-see the trees? This is it, this has to be it. The headlights disclosed a

lane of Chinese elms; bundles of wind-blown thistle scurried across it. Dick

doused the headlights, slowed down, and stopped until his eyes were adjusted to

the moon-illuminated night. Presently, the car crept forward. This passage was

chosen because it was what Dick and Perry were saying right before they went to

the Clutter house and killed the family. I feel that this quote is an

important one. To me I feel that it suggests that the accused were out to

commit a robbery, and had no original intent to kill the Clutters. Due to Mr.

Clutter not keeping any money in the home, the criminals were unable to locate

any money to steal. The criminals then proceeded to kill the family of four. I

feel that the murderers used the Clutters as a way of removing their anger from

not being able to locate the money they were looking for. The book follows the

story to the trial and execution of the killers, and spares few details

throughout. The outcome of the trial was guilty and the punishment was death

by hanging the accused.

One of the main points I saw by reading this book was the way the country /

region viewed itself after the murder occured. Many were shocked by the murder.

I feel that if the murder had of occured in todays society people would not have

been as shocked as they were then. When the story was based, not as many

murders existed, and this crime was just a total outrage to the normal society.

Why is the book on the Law reading list? Legal aspects of the book

I feel this book is on the law reading list because it provides the story that

is based on law characteristics. In the story criminal law is presented. While

reading the book I noticed many crimes, that were later resolved in a court of

law. The book presented the arrest, trial and eventual conviction/execution of

the accused. This provides an excellect law guideline showing how justice was

served.

The legal aspects of the book include the arrest of the accused, the trial that

the killers had to under go, and the decision for execution of the accused.

My Opinion On The Book

From reading this book I learned that even though you think that you can

trust someone you really cant. It made me realize that not all people are good

natured. It also made me realize that your mind can be changed by your friends.

I felt this book was well written, and provided a good story line. It included

a good combination of crime, which eventually lead to law and order. I enjoyed

reading the book, and would recommend it to others taking the law program.

Shakespeare draws attention to of Portia's suitors, the Prince of Morocco, the Prince of Arragon, and Bassanio. The Prince of Morocco is the first suitor of the suitors. His first line is, 'Mislike me not for my complexion' (Act Scene 1). However his character is proud. He says the lead casket is not worth hazarding everything and continues on to the sliver casket. He goes to the gold casket thinking that 'what many men desire' describes Portia. His choice can be explained by the fact that it is only his royal blood and his fortune that gives him respect. This means the Prince of Morocco judges what he sees from the outer appearance. The second suitor is the Prince of Arragon. His pride is shown through his choice of casket and his reaction to choosing the wrong casket. He comments on the inscription on the gold casket, 'I will not jump with common spirits and rank me with barbarous multitudes'. (Act Scene ) Thinking the gold casket was too common for him, he passes the gold and the silver, thinking it wasn't grand enough. He does not stop to consider the lead casket saying that it would have to look more attractive for him to hazard anything for it. The silver casket is the one that grabs his attention the most because that no one deserving Portia should go empty-handed. His pride leads him to assume he is worthy of Portia. His reaction when he finds that he didn't get the right casket is 'Did I deserve no more than a fool's head?' (Act Scene ). He accepts his fate and says 'I'll keep my oath.' (Act Scene ). Bassanio is the last suitor. He receives better treatment than the other two suitors do. Portia plays music in the background to help him so that he will choose the right casket. He says to Portia 'Let me choose; for as I am, I live upon the rack.' That shows that he is impatient and anxious to marry Portia. He comments that men give signs apparently that they were brave but on the inside, they were cowards. His reaction to choosing the right casket is joyful.

Although she is very beautiful, she is a different person on the inside. Portia is an intelligent person and shows this by her quick thinking with her plan to marry Bassanio and follow him in secret to Venice to save Antonio. She is a woman who loves her intelligence and enjoyment from using it. She is also intelligent in her relations with people. She realizes the value of her fathers' 'Trail by Caskets' and thoughtfully underestimates her talents in order to build up Bassanios'. Her intelligence was way past that of the other characters in the play. Besides her intelligence, she also has a sense of humour, the entertaining touch with which she describes the different suitors who come to win her. Portia shows that she does not have a mean wit but a gentle one because she won't make fun of anyone while they are in her company. She is also very sneaky because when she went to Venice, she hid herself and dressed as a boy '...and turn two mincing steps into a manly stride.' (Act Scene 4). Near the end of the play in Act 4 Scene 1, she tests Bassanio to see if he will give away the ring he swore on. 'I will have nothing else but only this; and now methinks I have a mind to it.' (Act 4 Scene 1).

Shylock is always being criticized for being a Jew. People have been taught hate, rather than it being a part of their personality. Revenge can be a tool in inspiring them to act evil. We are introduced to Shylock in Act 1 Scene where we learn of the abuse he has suffered in the hands of the Christians. '…you call me a disbeliever, cut throat dog, and spit upon my Jewish gabardine' (Act 1 Scene ). He points out that while Antonio spit on him and called him a dog, he expects him to lend him money. Antonio doesn't care about his speech and says he will call him this again. Shylock is naïve in the way that he believes he can take on the Christians and win. Shylocks' punishment is cruel with Antonio forcing him to convert to Christianity 'He presently become a Christian;' In the trial scene, Shylock's hatred towards Antonio becomes obvious in Act Scene , he repeats 'I'll have my bond' shows that he is openly aggressive. he is eager to kill Antonio and to prove him wrong. He also refused to show mercy when he was asked by Portia and the Duke 'On what compulsion must I? Tell me that.' (Act 4 Scene 1).Although he wants revenge, it is a natural human mistake to want to have revenge when you have been wronged.

With the James Byrd, Jr. case still fresh in our minds you have to wonder whom else is to blame? Some may believe that the prison system has no responsibility for crimes committed after inmates are released; I believe that the gangs formed inside the prison system play a part in crimes committed because of the lack of rehabilitation present in prisons across the country.

The lack of recognition of the gangs communication system allows them to continue to keep up with other gang members inside as well as on the outside. Many ways of communicating secretly are coding mail that is monitored, through visitors, phone calls, and messages in artwork. In order for the prison system to fix these problems they must first be aware of them. As Cory Goodwin, president of the gang-investigators association for the Florida Department of Corrections, explains in Gangs

"It has only been in the last five years that law enforcement has realized that what happens on the inside can affect what happens on the outside and vice versa." (Page 54)

When they are thrown together in a place with so much racial division and hatred already present, there are bound to be fights as well as gangs formed. The gangs formed cause even more division. If you don't have money to spend on commissary items for protection or fighting capabilities you become a servant. You become the prey. They want to be the predator not the prey so they join gangs. There are plenty of gangs to join in prison. According to Sam Buentello, chief of the Texas prison system's gang-intelligence, about 5,000 inmates are known to belong to officially recognized gangs, with another 10,000 suspected of gang affiliations. About 700 belong to white supremacist groups Aryan Brotherhood or Aryan Circle. About 00 belong to either the Crips or the Bloods, the black gangs. The greatest number, however, belong to Hispanic gangs, such as the Mexican Mafia and the Texas Syndicate. John King and Lawrence Brewer, two of the men convicted of killing James Byrd, Jr., had met up in prison and joined a white supremacy gang known as The Confederate Knights of America. Shawn Berry, the third man convicted and given a lighter sentence, had only gone to boot camp before hand and had never been in prison.

Order custom research paper on The Prison system, Are they responsible for some criminal behavior?

In order to make it through your time in prison, joining a gang seems like a pretty good idea. Without being able to escape the harsh reality of being in prison, however, it slowly takes its toll on you. As in gangs on the outside, gangs on the inside often lack self-esteem and a sense of alienation. In order to make up for these feelings they often exhibit extreme tough-guy behavior. This is a disorder often called "machismo." It doesn't just go away once they leave prison, especially if no treatment is sought.

There is always the opposing side to every issue. Many people believe that criminals are solely responsible for their actions. Their actions are what put them there in the first place. Many feel as though they are just looking to blame someone else for their own actions. The counterpart to that argument is that prison should not only be a punishment but also a place of rehabilitation. The prison system should not only be there to hand out consequences but also be there to help them out for when they will be released. Nothing of that sort was done for King and Brewer when they were released. If anything at all, prison had jaded them more than they already had been.

There are many different sides to this issue. There may be some who still believe that they are in prison for a reason and that reason is their own actions. However, the prison system needs to take some responsibility for the criminals who are to be released back into society after their term is served. Prison should not only be a debt to society, but also a place for rehabilitation. They cannot pay a debt to society and be released just as hateful and regardless, if not more, than before. Looking at the James Byrd, Jr. case, there has to be a little more to the story. The criminals' actions may have brought them to prison, but it caused more hatred and set them up to come right back.

Effect of the Bay of Pigs Invasion

In late 15, Cuba was experiencing a slow move in the direction of communism. It was also during this time when the Central Intelligence Agency stepped up its surveillance of Fidel Castro. This pro-communist leader was very well liked with the people of Cuba, a charismatic leader, but a threat to national security because of his communist activities.

The events leading to the fiasco at the Bay of Pigs incident became one of embarrassment and criticism. Afterwards this led to the build-up of arms and nuclear weapons in Cuba with Russia's help. In 15 when Fidel Castro ousted Fulgencio Batista from Cuba, our interests there were in danger, so the United States took more of a defensive stance.

While in Caracas, Venezuela in 15, a man by the name of Jake Engler observed the arrival of the pro-communist Castro, and noticed the hero-type welcome that Castro received upon his arrival. This alarmed him, so he wrote a letter to Colonel J.C. King (chief of the CIA's western hemisphere) about the matter, stating in his letter that there was a "real problem in Cuba." King called a meeting of several of the CIA's high-ranking officials and this is where the Bay of Pigs operation was conceived.

Richard Mervin Bissell, Jr., who was the CIA's chief of covert operations, assigned the job of Bay of Pigs project leader to Jake Engler. Engler had been CIA chief of station in Caracas from 157 to 160, had had direct involvement with the CIA's 154 coup in Guatemala, and knew many Cuban exiles, so it was decided that they would train approximately 0 Cubans to organize a "typical Latin political upheaval" to oust Castro from Cuba. This way the U.S. could make it appear as if they were not directly involved, and thwart the spread of communism even closer to North America.

From the end of World War II until the mid-eighties, a good number of Americans could be in agreement that communism was the foe. It (communism) wanted to destroy our way of life and alter the freest country in the world. Communism is an economic system in which one person or a group of persons manages the entire country's government. The main purpose of it is to make the social and economic status of all individuals the same. From "dictionary.com" communism is defined as "A system of government in which the state plans and controls the economy and a single, often authoritarian party holds power, claiming to make progress toward a higher social order in which all goods are equally shared by the people."

Who was directly responsible for the failed Bay of Pigs operation? It was the CIA and President Kennedy. Richard Helms, "the CIA's most experienced spy boss, called the invasion of Cuba harebrained." President Kennedy kept dragging his feet, and didn't want to talk about the invasion, and some of the President's closest advisors were not even aware of the invasion plans at all.

Meanwhile, the CIA was busy putting together a rebel force, and working harder than ever to build facilities in which to train these rebel groups. At the same time, the CIA was also involved in attempts to have Castro killed, by several different means. Once they considered spraying the broadcasting studio that Castro used to make speeches from with a chemical similar to LSD. The chemical was supposed to produce unpredictable behavior, and would make him

seem less reliable to his listeners. Another time they laced his cigars with a botulism toxin so powerful that it would kill Castro if he even put one of them in his mouth. They obviously never made it to Castro.

The CIA even resorted to contacts with the "underworld" mafia representatives to kill Fidel Castro. Allen Dulles, formerly with the OSS and in 14 became the director of the CIA, and unaware that others in his own agency had conspired to have Castro assassinated.

When John Kennedy became President of the United States in 160, he was informed of the intended invasion on Cuba. He was told by his advisors that Castro was an unpopular leader and that once they had ousted Castro from Cuba, the Cuban population would support the CIA's trained military.

On April 14, B-6 planes started to bomb Cuba, which ended up destroying nearly all of Cuba's aircraft and many pilots. Two days passed before five merchant ships carrying 1,400 Cuban exiles arrived at the Bay of Pigs. The attack was a total failure. Castro's army sank two of the merchant ships, including the ship carrying most of the supplies, and shot down two planes attempting to give the militants air-cover. Within seventy-two hours all of the invading troops had been either killed, wounded or had surrendered.

1. The five marketing concepts that organizations conduct their marketing strategies include - Production, product, selling, marketing and societal marketing.

Production states that as consumers, we will have a tendency to purchase products that are available at the time and are fairly cheap to purchase, therefore managers should place more emphasis on ensuring these products are on the shelf. i.e. more efficient production and distribution. e.g. when the demand for a product is higher than what the production of a certain product.

Product states that consumers are more concerned with quality, does it offer something that the other one doesn't. Organizations tend to improve or make the best product and as consumers we look at solutions to problems and not just the product.

Selling concept assumes that consumers will not buy certain products unless management introduces a large-scale promotional campaign. Most commonly seen with products that are not on the consumer's minds when they are out shopping. Looks at finding a way to get existing products to a diverse consumer market.

Marketing concept refers to organizations identifying the needs and wants of their target crowd and getting the organizations to produce a product that meets the consumer needs and wants more effectively than a competitor can. Looks at creating products for an existing market.

Societal concept is similar to the marketing concept in that it identifies the consumer's needs and wants but also determines the consumer's interests as well. Which means the organization is looking at improving the consumers well being.

I feel the societal concept should be adopted as it takes into consideration the long-term effect of the consumer and not just the short-term aspect.

A Deeper Look

At first reading, this story seems to be a little discouraging. The boy telling the story, the main character Michael Christian, and the other children reside in this home where the Old Head Nurse oversees and there only link to the outside world is a black and white cracked Zenith television set with no knobs, a dime stuck in the channel selector and the sound and picture work at different times. There was the Human Skeleton that would bite people, the Big Boy who ran away every night, and the guy locked away on the sun porch who the Young Doctors were taking apart an arm and a leg at a time. It looks as if there is no hope for these kids.

The segregation between the children in the ward and the nurses is established early in the story. When the Old Head Nurse suggests watching more appropriate holiday programming like Frosty the Snowman Michael Christian responds, "Fuck Frosty!" He wants to see "The Birds." I think this segregation is further emphasized by the fact that words like "Old Head Nurse" and "Young Doctors" are capitalized; it generalizes the authority figures in this story and conglomerates them all into one group. Michael Christian displays an attitude that doesn't exactly correspond to his name throughout the story. He has dreams of one day being able to do a split onstage like his idol James Brown, so he practices singing and buds an afro. These dreams are initiated and fueled the Young Doctors and Michael Christian embraces them as his hope, that and yearning to see "The Birds." The young man that is telling the story is Michael Christian accomplice in the common desire to the see "The Birds." He obsesses about this movie during the entire story, but I think he has reason to. He's in a bleak situation; he's been at this establishment for many Christmases and he has seen many kids ask for gifts and get disappointed including him; the Head Nurses treat him as a loud nascence, but he is tired of getting ball point pens, he wants something different and so he hopes to see "The Birds" this year for Christmas and make his desire vocally know.

I look deeper into this story and I see the symbolism. The only actual tie these children have to the outside world is this cracked Zenith that has been twice handed down. It's as if the author was trying to convey that these children were placed at the bottom of the barrel. They couldn't even get a hand me down, instead they receive hand me downs that had already been handed down; thirdhand. I think this was also how these children were seen by the community that they lived in. Ballpoint pens, recycled, already been played with toys, and almost unachievable aspirations like becoming James Brown is what these children were given for Christmas. It was more or less out of sympathy that people like the society ladies and Practice Preachers would visit these children for Christmas. Hearing the story of the Nativity told by the Practice Preachers, Michael Christian motioned the plucking out of his own eyes; an action I think conveys the degree of lowness that he felt. "Why pluck out someone else's eyes? They have more hope of getting out of here than me," is what I think he was probably feeling. But hope lied in his desire for "The Birds." A man named Sammy came to visit the children and when he first comes he is drunk and wearing a dirty Santa suit; handing out Timex Junior wristwatches to all the kids. When the reader describes this scene he states he still has his watch, somewhere. This shows how he felt about the wristwatch, it was dispensable and unimportant and I don't think that it was because he didn't like the wristwatch, but because it came from a blubbering slob. Who wants a gift that came from someone who doesn't really care about them or himself for that matter? Sammy asks the children what they want for Christmas and they answer him without enthusiasm or hope. The night porter lets him out through the sun porch. I see the actual setting of the home as a heaven and earth; they are equal in a sense and the sun porch is a kind of Purgatory. As people pass through the sun porch they enter the home, earth and try to do their good deeds. For the society ladies, they spend time with the children, the Practice Preachers read them the story of the Nativity in an attempt to expose the children to some form of God, and for Sammy he renders gifts as his good deed. All of them come in from the outside, heaven, through the sun porch, Purgatory, and into the home, earth and they leave in the opposite fashion. They leave earth through Purgatory and into heaven to the outside. This is a little ironic, the outside may be seen as a type of heaven; freedom to the kids trapped inside the home, but in actuality the outside is an even harder type of living than the one that they have been exposed to. As long as they are in the home they never have to worry about their basic needs not being met, which to me seem like a type of heaven. Everyone else is well aware that things such as poverty and war exist on the outside, not exactly heaven.

In the end I think that there is a sense of hope. Michael Christian eventually gets what he wants for Christmas and though he doesn't say much during the movie I think in the end he is grateful. He is different; he's quiet like the Shepards when they saw the angels for the first time. They were sore afraid, and although I don't think that Michael Christian is sore afraid I think he is in a state of awe. He thought he'd never get a Christmas wish fulfilled here in the home and because he does, the emotional wall that he has had during the story is broken down by the act of kindness shown by the old head nurse. This is further emphasized by the fact that author of the story uses lower case at the end of the story in the title of the old head nurse. The segregation between the authority figures and the patients is non-existent for the moment in time where Michael Christian's attention and everyone else's attention is on "The Birds." At the movies end, Michael Christian buries his head in his pillow. He no longer has to sustain his false image, the wall is gone and he can be himself, not the loud, angry, James Brown impersonating boy that he was and the afro doesn't matter anymore. It is disposed of like the emotional wall. He is changed.
