Tone is the reflective attitude the poet attempts to evoke in her reader.

When a person speaks they are able to bring to mind both a literal meaning (denotation) as well as a connotative meaning. The connotation of a sentence spoken is noted by "body language, intonation, word choice and many other subtle nuances that allows the speaker to effect a desired reaction from her listener. The poet must use word choices, placement, hyperbole, metaphor, paradox, irony, and satire to place the reader into the mental mood that will give more credence to her chosen subject. I am a proud member of a group of poets who are as diverse as any one could meet in a world as diverse as the one we all share. I have chosen to use the works of some of the poets to illustrate the use of those tools of tone a poet must master to allow the "feelings" she has to be projected to their readers.

TONE

The poets or personas attitude in style or expression toward the subject, e.g., loving, ironic, bitter, pitying, fanciful, solemn, etc. Tone can also refer to the overall mood of the poem itself, in the sense of a pervading atmosphere intended to influence the readers emotional response and foster expectations of the conclusion.

Sidelight In spoken language we recognize tone by inflections of the voice and by the demeanor of the speaker; in poetry, tone is conveyed through the use of connotation, diction, figures of speech, rhythm and other elements of poetic construction.

(Compare Content, Form, Motif, Style, Texture)

CONSONANCE

A pleasing combination of sounds; sounds in agreement with tone. Also, the close repetition of the same end consonants of stressed syllables with differing vowel sounds, such as boat and night, or the words drunk and milk in the final line of Coleridges Kubla Khan.

Sidelight Consonance most often occurs within a line. When used at line ends in place of rhyme, as in the words, cool and soul, in the third stanza of Emily Dickinsons He Fumbles at your Spirit, it is sometimes referred to as consonantal rhyme to differentiate it from perfect rhyme and other types of near rhyme.

(See also Euphony, Modulation, Resonance, Sound Devices)

DIDACTIC POETRY

Poetry which is clearly intended for the purpose of instruction -- to impart theoretical, moral, or practical knowledge, or to explain the principles of some art or science, as Virgils Georgics, or Popes An Essay on Criticism.

Sidelight Didactic poetry can assume the manner and attributes of imaginative works by incorporating the knowledge in a variety of forms, such as dramatic poetry, satire, and parody, among others. Allegories, aphorisms, apologues, fables, gnomes, and proverbs are so closely related to didactic poetry that they may be considered specific types of that genre.

FIGURE OF SPEECH

A mode of expression in which words are used out of their literal meaning or out of their ordinary use in order to add beauty or emotional intensity or to transfer the poets sense impressions by comparing or identifying one thing with another that has a meaning familiar to the reader. Some important figures of speech are simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole and symbol.

Sidelight Some rhetoricians have classified over 00 separate figures of speech, but many are so similar that differences of interpretation often make their classification an arbitrary judgement. How they are classified, or labeled, however, is secondary to the importance of construing their effect correctly.

Sidelight Figures of speech are also a means of concentration; they enable the poet to convey an image with the connotative power of a few words, where a great many would otherwise be required.

RHYTHM

An essential of all poetry, the regular or progressive pattern of recurrent accents in the flow of a poem as determined by the arses and theses of the metrical feet, i.e., the rise and fall of stress. The measure of rhythmic quantity is the meter.

Sidelight A rhythmic pattern in which the stress falls on the final syllable of each foot, as in the iamb or anapest, is called a rising or ascending rhythm; a rhythmic pattern with the stress occurring on the first syllable of each foot, as in the dactyl or trochee, is a falling or descending rhythm.

Sidelight From an easy lilt to the rough cadence of a primitive chant, rhythm is the organization of sound patterns the poet has created for pleasurable reading.

Problem Statement-

Create 1---4 expressions for each of the numbers 1-5. If you find more than one answer for a number write that down too. In each case, the expression must use the numbers 1, , , & 4 exactly once.

Process-

First I just tried simple addition to figure out the problem.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on POW

1+++4= 10

1+4=55

41+=74

Then I realized my numbers were too big, so I started to add parenthesis and multiplication to my problem.

++4x1=

(++1)4=4

4x+1+=15

4xx1+=14

4x+1+=1

4xx+1=5

(4x1)+(x)=10

(4x1+)x=18

Then I started adding subtraction to my problem.

4 -+-1=

4 -1x+=11

4 -1x+=5

4 -++1=4

-1+x4=8

4 -+-1=

4 --1+=4

41-=

-14=

4-1=

This gave me most of my answers after I played around a bit.

Solution-

Extensions-

To change the problem I could use different numbers instead of 1, , , &4 for instance 4, 5, 6, & 7.Then I could also change the range of numbers that I have to find solutions for like 10-5.

Evaluation-

I learned that there are lots of different ways to get just one solution and there are a lot of solutions for using just a few numbers in a math equation. It was tough, but I enjoyed working on it. I probably wouldn't change the problem like I said it was a challenge but I enjoyed working on it.

1.) Problem statement

How many eggs did the farmer start out with using the clues she gave her agent? Is there more than one possibility for the answer?

On the way to market a farmer hit a pothole and her cart spilled leaving every egg, that was once inside, broken.

To file a full report the farmer had to tell her agent all she could remember about how many eggs were in the cart. She couldn't remember the exact number of eggs so she told her agent what she knew about putting them into equal groups and what worked out best.

When she put them into groups of , , 4, 5, and 6 there was always one egg left over.

When she put them into groups of 7 they came out evenly.

.) Process

When starting to solve the problem I realized that the number had to be divisible by 7 but, couldn't be divisible by , , 4, 5, or 6. That meant that the number was going to be larger than 4. Then I started picking numbers randomly to try them out.

I then realized that for five to go into a number and have a remainder of one, the number had to end in an 1 or a 6. Well, then if the number ended in a 6 it would make it even and an even number wouldn't work because any even number is divisible by . All of this helped me conclude that my answer had to end in an 1. Then I just started randomly picking numbers that ended in 1 to see if they were divisible by 7.

Then if it was, I went on to see if the other numbers went into it leaving a remainder of 1.

.) Solution

Once I guessed around enough, I found that the farmer started out with 01 eggs. I know that my answer is right because it fits all of the information the farmer gave her agent. 01 is divisible by 7 and when it is divided by , , 4, 5, and 6 it always has a remainder of one. It helped to actually sit and think about it before I just started guessing numbers. It really saved me a lot of time when I figured out it had to end in an 1. There are also more possibilities but they would be higher numbers in the thousands at least.

4.) Extensions

Okay, say the farmer is still at home and she is trying to put her eggs into groups. She doesn't know how many eggs she has but she knows that her eggs will go into groups of seven evenly but when they are put into groups of , , 4, 5,and 6 it always comes out to the farmer having one egg left over. How many eggs does the farmer have? Or what if, instead of going evenly into groups of 7 it went in evenly into groups of eleven or another prime number?

5.) Evaluation

This problem seemed impossible in the beginning the first time I read over it. When I finally sat down and thought about it, I understood it better and ideas just started pouring into my head. Once I wrote something down onto the paper it lead me to new ideas which lead me to even more ideas and so on. I thought this problem was fun because I always enjoy a challenge. I don't think I would change the problem if I had the chance just because I wouldn't want it to be any easier. I learned that if you read over the problem and really think about it the answer might come to you over time. When I was thinking about the problem, after I had finished it, instead of going through all of work of dividing everything out I could have just used the basic rules of division to save time.

Moving Day

Before I went to bed the day after my fourth birthday, my mother told me to clean my room extra good because there were people coming to look at the house tomorrow. I asked her why people were coming to look at our house, was there something wrong with it? My father told me not to question my mom, and to go do what she says. My friends and I had played a game of hide and seek the day before, and there was quite an array of toys and what not strewn about the room. I looked around and not one square inch of the floor was visible. Multi-colored alphabet blocks, my ninja turtle collection, Tonka trucks with stones and sand from the backyard, and just about every present given to me with the wrapping paper balled up next to the empty boxes took up the entire room. So I pushed all I could under my bed, and the rest went in the closet.

When I woke up the next morning, I could hear voices from the living room. One of them was my mom, the other I had never heard before. I opened my door and took a step back in shock, standing in front of me was the largest black woman I had ever seen. She had big red lips surrounding a mouth I was sure could swallow me whole. She wore a dress with yellow flowers and had an enormous straw gardening hat. "This is Mrs. Jackson," my mom told me, "and she is here to look at the house." I looked up into those big brown eyes and asked her what was wrong with it. In a loud voice dripping with southern flavor, she replied, " I hope nothing dear because this is the best one I have seen so far." I wondered why she would be just admiring my house, but said nothing more and went off to get some cheerios. When I finished she had left, and mom came into the kitchen with tears in her eyes. My father must have known, for he said nothing. I asked what was going on, why she was crying and what that woman was doing here. She said nothing, just looked at my father and left the room.

At dinner that night, the only conversation that took place was between our two dogs, Lady and Tramp, their names coming from one of my favorite movies. After helping mom with the dishes I went into the family room where I was planning on watching some television. My father came in and sat down on the couch next to me. He smelled of one of his beloved cigars, and he had his favorite Citadel sweatshirt on that looked to about as old as he was. "Tomorrow," he said, "you are going to help your mother and I pack." I didn't think much of it at the time, the cartoon I was watching had just about my full attention. He looked at me for a long while, then messed up my hair and gave me one his bear hugs that just about squeezed the life out of me. I could smell his aftershave and felt his five o'clock shadow rub the side of my face like sandpaper. He hollered something to my mother in the kitchen and left.

I awoke the next morning to the steady beep, beep, beep of a large yellow truck. I went downstairs and saw dozens of boxes packed full with all the objects in the house that were small enough to fit in them. On the sides was labeled what each box contained, and my uncle and mom were loading them into the truck. All of the furniture had been removed, and everything else was in its proper box. The house had a strange empty feeling, the bare walls seemed to be lifeless and there was a strange empty feeling in the air. My mom sent me to bring my favorite toys and leave Ernie the goldfish in his jar, we couldn't take him with us. My father appeared at the door, walked over and swept me up. "Do you want to ride in the front of the truck, way up high next to your uncle?" he asked me. I asked him where we were going, and he said a place called "Maryland". I hoped it wasn't too far away from Charlestown, my day school class was going on a field trip to the zoo . He kissed me on the forehead and told me he loved me and to be a good boy and listen to my mother. My mother and uncle came and sat on either side of me, closing the doors. I remember two things. One was how far up we were off the ground; and my father waving in the side mirror. I asked my mother why he wasn't coming with us, and she said, "Emerson your father and I are getting a divorce, we will talk more about it when we arrive tomorrow." "What a funny word," I remember thinking to myself, then I asked my mom if I could bring Ernie with us. She told me I could get whatever kind of fish I wanted and even a bigger bowl for him when we got to this Maryland place.

hello,

To begin writing this is quite stressful to me, especially at a time when I am trying to reduce the stress that ordinarily comes with my position. It is my sincerest wish that you will pay close attention to what I am about to write.

I met with Mr. Huskins yesterday afternoon and he revealed to me in a very emotional way that he (and other PTA volunteers) feels very disrespected by the way you conduct yourself in PTA meetings (whenever I am not there). I was appalled at his presentation.

I am hoping that you will speak with me in person next week and tell me what has come over you. I say it in that manner, because I am taking notice of your questioning me about the by-laws of the PTA organization and your apparent intent to run for executive office in the upcoming election. By the way, Mrs. Walker was invited by Mr. Huskins to be present in the meeting that I held with him. Although she had very little to say, she announced that she (along with Mr. Huskins and other current executive board members) will be withdrawing her participation from the PTA (but not from parent involvement) at the school I love so dearly. I made it very clear to Mrs. Walker that I remain very appreciative of her willingsness to act as President of the PTA, and to give so much of her time and energy to support what I stand for at school. I also encouraged her to leave her name on the nomination list, if she happens to be nominated. I made it clear to her that I would remain supportive of her role as President.

It appears to me that you have allowed your conflicts with Amanda to negatively affect the function of the PTA. When we speak at the next opportunity, I hope you will reveal the stance you have taken. If it is true that you have what I call you personal agenda, based on your responses to me, then I will consider your behavior toward others at school a serious blow to our relationship. Ive trusted you all along and I anticipate that you will not let me down in telling me all that I need to know from you.

Sincerely,

Bases of Survival

Everyday, millions of children walk to school, having no idea why they are being educated, most, don't even want to go to school. But, in reality, the education of the youth is vital to the future of the world. What are schools for? The purpose of their existence lies in the responsibilities we are given as human beings, United States citizens and as intelligent people, to prepare the youth to become the new adults, and have the resources to keep the human race going.

Looking back in time, how do humans live, not by the skills they had when they were born, but more than likely the skills they were taught. Within humans, there is a need and desire to teach their own offspring, as if it is of the highest importance. This comes from the fact, when a mother is pregnant with her child, she holds on to the baby for around nine months. This is very different from most other animals, which gestation periods range from a year to even three, holding their litter for sometimes four times longer than humans do. For example, when a baby zebra is born, it is able to walk and eat on its own, only a few hours after birth, but human babies in their earlier stages of life take more time and care. Human instinct is to teach because we have to teach out own children most of their fine motor skills, dues to the shortened gestation period. After the toddler stage if life, becomes a even more important level of teaching that the parents do, more on the emotional level. Do you notice that every time you get mad, you act like mad like one of your parents? Well, this is from the second part of their education, their emotional training. As a child, they learn from their parents how function with other people, outside the home, whether its how to treat friends, or what do to when a stranger asks to give a free ride, our parents also teach us how to handle thee situations. Parents are responsible in giving their children the proper schooling to be able to work in the world environment today, there for their youth con thrive in the world today.

After children revive teachings from their parents, another form of education comes from our own country, the United States. The education focuses on mirroring the adult mature environment, giving the children the abilities to handle the real world and all it has to offer. Going to school, whether it is public or private, the most important part of to our countries survival. Education takes into account our every step of our country, and reflects how stable we really are. Schools are designed to teach

Write my Essay on Bases of Survival for me

The aspect this education paper is referring to is the education of youth. The public school systems around the United States, especially in Florida are awful. The school systems for the most part just want more and more money and since the government doesn't give them what they want the school system just cuts back on whatever they think is expendable. Besides the money issue, schools are letting people become teachers that are not even close to qualified for a position of such responsibilities. One more thing is how a substitute teacher doesn't need any experience in the field they are subbing for and all one needs to be a substitute is a high school diploma, meaning these substitutes probably have no more knowledge then the high school kids they are teaching. I realize the people in charge of the educational system should have more knowledge then I am and be smarter then I am, but they might lack the common sense or not see what harm they are doing because they aren't children any more. If these people in charge of all these children and young adults futures would see what they are doing thru our eyes everyone would be better off. The whole curriculum needs a "face lift" to make it work more efficiently, even though it is not as bad as some make it seem. Ways to fix it could be have meetings with the parents but also during these meetings the parents should actually deicide not just sit and listen and try to complain and never get anywhere with the complaints they make. Education needs to be more in the hands of the parents and less in the hands of the school board.

ARTICLE REVIEW

The article I choose to review started off with the statement that, "If you could change your title from Chief Executive, what would you change it to?". This caught my attention because I really had to think about this question and wasn't sure what I would change the title to. The Article is titled, "Are You Listening?" and it is written by Rebecca L. Morgan. Morgan Seminar Group published "Are You Listening" in 14 and I found this article at http//www.rebeccamorgan.com. One reason I choose to read this article is because I enjoyed reading "The Power of Our Words" which is also by Rebecca L Morgan. I find it interesting to read about how people listen to other people, what types of listeners we are, and ways we can improve our listening skills. This article talks about listening in communication and reasons why people don't listen well.

Custom writing service can write essays on Communications

In this article John Scully said that he would change the title of Chief Executive to, "Chief Listener". I think that was a good idea by John Scully. Our textbook mentions five main things you need to do to be a good listener. First you need to receive the message, then understand it, remember what you heard, evaluate that, and respond to the message (Unit 7). You can't afford to miss any one of these steps because they are all crucial to listening. This article states that we know listening is important so why don't we listen better. Well I can recall some reasons that I have learned on why we don't listen better. In Unit 1 we learned that noise and context effect how we listen to a message and could distract us. Also in Unit 7 we learned about stereotyping, being bias, and prejudice which affect the way we might listen to someone. Other reasons why we don't listen better are that we are not focused on what the other person is saying, we might be to busy to give our undivided attention to the speaker, we could have something else on our mind, and we might not be interested or knowledgeable in what the speaker is saying. Maybe we don't listen that good because we weren't taught by a professional how to listen. I remember taking reading, writing, science, math, and history in high school but never a listening class. I think that I am a good listener but sometimes I am an impatient listener. For example I listen really good to what people are saying but if something pops up in my head about the conversation I sometimes find myself eager to interrupt the speaker and start talking. My reason for being an impatient listener is because I don't want to forget what it is I wanted to say especially if the speaker is telling a long story. Now that I notice myself doing this I just try and bite my tongue and let the speaker finish then take my turn talking.

This article mentions that we think we know what the people in our life are going to say before they say anything so we tend to listen to them with only one ear. When we first meet someone we practice our best listening skills because we are not sure what they are going to say. In the beginning we don't know them good enough to just do some partial listening. Unit 1 of our textbook teaches us about explanatory knowledge which is after you know a person really good you can start to predict and explain why they said or did something. To improve our listening we should use both ears and practice some immediacy in communication. We learned about immediacy in Unit 8 and it showed us that if we show interest and pay close attention to the speaker we will become a better listener. We have to show concern about the other person, which is empathic listening (Unit 8). Also be an active listener (Unit 7) by giving feedback or a positive compliment. Be friendly and show respect to the speaker.

In conclusion this was another good article by Rebecca L Morgan. I'm glad that I choose to read this article and I recommend it to everyone. This article had some useful information that I would like to touch upon. One quote said, "We need to be compulsive listeners and selective talkers" and that is some good advise for everyone. This article made me realize in communication you could be being prejudice and not even see it so it is important to look at how you listen and pay close attention. We can all improve the way we listen we just need to figure out what kind of listener we are and work on fixing our bad skills. Then just put in some effort to become a better listener. Remember to practice listening to someone the way you would want someone else to listen to you.

The assassination of Malcolm X made headlines in almost every newspaper, magazine, and broadcast. Every different piece of media chose different ways to distinguish the story by allowing the reader to experience the assassination as if it was right in front of them. Each of the five newspapers that were chosen used their own word choice, tone, and information for their audience in order to get their point across. The New York Times and the New York Post were two of the newspapers that seem to have different views on the events of February 1, 165.

The New York Times portrayed Malcolm X as a "Negro Extremist" who was the leader of a Black Nationalist movement. The New York Times made clear that this assassination wasn't a racial feud between white supremacist and the Negro race. The newspaper gave clear notice of who the killer was and what race as they noted from a police spokesman saying the -year-old Negro, Thomas Hagan was being held on charges for the murder of Malcolm X. The New York Times added in their article gruesome details of the event , stating that Malcolm was struck with seven bullets from Hagan's weapon, which was not listed. The article also featured a eye-witness account of about thirty other shots were fired during the carnage as men, women, and children were trying to escape the flying bullets by plunging under tables. The newspaper article once again letting the audience know that the assassination was a result of a feud between the Black Muslims and Malcolm X and his followers.

The New York Post used a first person viewpoint in their article dated on February , 00, a day after the assassination. The New York Post felt that by publishing their article in first person they would without a doubt allow the audience to experience the event first hand. This newspaper portrayed Malcolm X as a "savior" who wasn't holding this gathering in the Audubon Ballroom to be an aggressive leader who ready for war with whomever firebombed his home the week before. The article portrayed all the Malcolm X followers as loyal people who had a grudge against the white race. The article states that one man was quoted as saying, "Malcolm is our only hope. You can depend on him to tell it like it is and to give Whitey hell." The New York Post gives clippings of what Malcolm X began to say as he was ready to speak to his supporters. The eye-witness account noted that in the beginning of the speech two men began arguing, while a scuffle broke out in the back soon after. An in-depth detail the eye-witness account tells, that all hell broke loose as he heard stifled shots from a un-identified weapon and saw Malcolm X fall lifelessly over chairs from gunshot wounds. The account also adds that people were screaming from all sides of the ballroom with words like, "Don't let them kill him." The eye-witness doesn't leave out that the men with the weapons didn't go away without any wounds. The men were reported as being slaughtered by the bodyguards of Malcolm X.

The two newspaper articles that published the events on that day did use a small amount of pieces of information that was relevant in both articles. Both articles gave a brief location of where the assassination took place even though they didn't use the same context. The ways the newspapers went about stating the information of the terrible tragedy were somewhat alike, only having their own perspectives sound different.

Cheap University Papers on Malcolm X

From the viewpoint of the writers of the two articles, they both had different feelings toward Malcolm X and how he went about everyday life. However, if reading one article or another, the audience would get two distinctive ideas about the whole tragedy. If questioning the different audiences, it would be easy to tell how diverse the articles truly were. In terms of how the article was portraying Malcolm X and the awful tragedy that led to his death., the audience would tend to believe discrete stories and come up with unique outcomes of the true events that really went down on that horrible day.

Order your Compare and Contrast: The Birds(short story) & The Night of the Living Dead(movie) paper at affordable prices!

"The Birds", written by Daphne du Maurier, is a short story that will be compared with the movie The Night of the Living Dead. There were many differences between the two. Diversities such as themes, plot, setting, characters, endings and any changes. In The Night of Living Dead, There was radiation on one of Venus' satellites and it has turned regular people into zombies. Anyone who was not affected by it could be eaten by the zombies and they themselves will soon turn in to them. The main character is Ben, and the antagonists are Mr. Cooper as well as the zombies. In "The Birds", the protagonist is Nat Hocken and he and his family are trying to fight off thousands of birds attacking people as well as their property. It has been said that the birds have changed because of the weather, or the Arctic Circle.

"The Birds" other characters are Mr. and Mrs. Trigg. They died because the family did not listen to Nat Hocken, the main character. Nat is the smart one in this story. He has a lot of experience and received even more in World War II. Nat boards up the house and tries to calm his family down. They try to ride it out as the birds are attacking the house, trying to get in. Nat gathers supplies from the late neighbors house. The short story ends with Nat smoking the last cigarette in the pack.

In addition to the said characters in The Night of the Living Dead, some others were Mrs. Cooper, Mrs. Cooper's daughter, Judy, Tom, Barbara and John. In the beginning of the movie, John dies and later on becomes a monster. Barbara is now traumatized and can barely do anything. Tom and Judy die because Judy is stubborn and brings Tom to his death with her. Mr. and Mrs. Cooper die because they are disobedient and trap themselves in the basement with their infected daughter who kills them, and is later killed by Ben. Ben also kills Mr. and Mrs. Cooper just after they became zombies. Barbara died because John grabbed her out of the house and they ate her. Ben wakes up the next morning to be shot in the head by a killing party, sent out to exterminate the zombies.

As for the comparability of the two, the plot and more are of some liking. Mr. and Mrs. Trigg died for the reason of not listening just as Judy, Tom, and Mr. and Mrs. Cooper did. At one point in both the movie and the short story, the main characters smoked a cigarette, as if it would be their last. War was also a comparison. World War II in "The Birds" was like the air raids and the massive amount of the enemy. The mass amount of birds flew in the sky hitting the houses like kamikaze pilots and other planes on a mission. In the war of Vietnam, the army just shot anyone who looked like they were Vietnamese. This was like how the killing party just shot Ben without even checking if he was a zombie or not. The main idea of the two was that the main characters were trapped by a massive amount of the enemy and had to fight to survive. The main characters both hammered at the windows and doors. Ben and Nat reassured everybody. The characters also trusted and depended on the radio. The radio compared the reasons of these unusual happenings to science. The characters were all trapped in a house all boarded up. In both the movie and the short story, the telephones were dead. The exact location of the two was not the same but the country setting was. There were several events of conflict and foreshadowing.

Order Custom Essay on Compare and Contrast: The Birds(short story) & The Night of the Living Dead(movie)

The endings of the movie and the short story were very different and bizarre. In The Night of the Living Dead, Ben dies and for "The Birds" the author leaves the reader with Nat smoking the last cigarette in the pack. In the movie, all the zombies are destroyed but in the short story, the birds are still attacking. Even though the ending was not told, I think that Nat will die in the end because the birds will get through and kill him and his family. These were some explanations why the movie and the short story are not really that different.

Letter from Birmingham Jail and Resistance to Civil Government comparsion.

Aside from man fighting for freedom or beliefs, the question is whether one person can make a difference using words instead of wars. In "Letter from Birmingham Jail" and "Resistance to Civil Government" by Martin Luther King Jr. and Henry David Thoreau, it has been proved that words can work in society but in the right manner. Injustice is a very important thing to King and Thoreau when it comes to the people and themselves. Though the stories are both similar, they have their differences in how they changed the world. They changed the world by sharing their beliefs to people to stand up for what they believe into the government. The similarities between civil and political change and the accepentance of the consequences that were bestowed against both opinions will be mentioned. Also, the differences of the end to segregation and promoting to stop slavery between the stories will be seen.

Change for the people is what makes the world keep going. King saw inequality for the African Americans and wanted a change for his people. Thoreau saw intolerance and wanted a change in the American government. Both of these intelligent men wrote their ideas about what they saw and felt could be done about injustice. King said, "A law is unjust if it is inflicted on a minority that as a result of being denied the right to vote, had no part in enacting or devising the law." King is saying that judging innocent people is injustice. Thoreau said, "Can there not be a government in which majorities do not virtually decide right and wrong, but conscience?... Must the citizen ever for a moment, or the least degree, resign his conscience to the legislator? Why has every man a conscience, then. I think we should be men first, and subject afterward." Thoreau is questioning democracy and why the government makes the rules. They are both saying not to give into the government if you don't agree with the rule. That is the similar civil and political change they made.

Accepting a consequence for something unfair for someone else does not seem right. King and Thoreau went through it and changed the world. King quotes, "I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and willingly accepts the penalty by staying in jail to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the very highest respect for the law." He is accepting going to jail and with the community knowing injustice, they should pressure the government. Thoreau quotes, "I did not for a moment feel confined, and the walls seemed a great waste of stone and mortar. I felt as if I alone of all my townsmen had paid my tax. They plainly did not know how to treat me, but behaved like persons who are underbred." He has accepted where he is and what he did to get there though it was unfair. Those are how they similarly accepted the consequences that were presented to them.

Putting an end to something takes a lot of dedication, time and strategy. To King it was segregation. King said, "All segregation statutes are unjust because segregation distorts the soul and damages the personality. It gives the segregator a false sense of superiority and the segregated a false sense of inferiority. … Hence segregation is not only politically, economically, and sociologically unsound, it is morally wrong and sinful." That is his way to ending segregation. Thoreau on the other hand, promoted his opinion to stop slavery. He said' "when a sixth of the population of a nation which has undertaken to be the refuge of liberty are slaves,…, I think that it is not too soon for honest man to rebel and revolutionize." That was Thoreau's way of putting an end to slavery. Both of these men put a stop to two important things that was needed to be stopped.

It was mentioned whether a person could make a difference by using words other than war. It was proved that this statement it true from all the information that has been covered. I said that both stories had similarities and differences in some of the categories I listed. Those categories have their proof through quotes of the writers. These two men did a miraculous job fighting for what they believed in and using the right manner to get it across. What has become of the information is words will get the job done; you just have to know how to use them. King and Thoreau had the same ideas, but viewed them a little differently. They got what they wanted and made everyone else happy as well.

McDonaldization

McDonaldization is a very important way to think and concept to believe in. It is the thought of how a chain store like McDonalds is benefiting from several common and repeated characteristics. Some of those are familiarity, calculability, control, predictability, and efficiency. The main concepts behind McDonalds, to the consumer, are that it is affordable, fast and convenient. Which makes it hard for small businesses around them to survive. They offer too many choices that a consumer can't rationalize with any locals.

I have read all of the suggestions and these are the one's that I chose to explain.

Write your Mcdonaldization research paper

"Avoid daily routine as much as possible. Try to do as many things as possible in a different way from one day to the next." The compromises that an individual would incur from this situation would be that he/she would become unpredictable and less efficient. Doing things differently every time is confusing and time consuming also; it would be very unwise to do.

"Instead of popping into H&R Block at income-tax time, hire a local accountant, preferably one who works out of an office in the home." By doing this you would not know how efficient this person is. Also, you would not be familiar with him/her and would not know the quality of the work.

"Similarly, the next time a minor medical or dental emergency leads you to think of a visit to a McDoctor or a McDentist, resist the temptation and go instead to your neighborhood doctor or dentist, preferably one who is in solo practice." In this situation you would not know how efficient the doctor is. Also, you would not be familiar with him/her and would not know the quality of the work and whether or not you can trust them. Plus you will not be able to control which doctor you get to visit. Your security could be at risk and that is something that you should be reluctant to compromise with.

"At least once a week, pass up lunch at McDonalds and frequent a local greasy spoon. For dinner, again at least once a week, park the car, unplug the microwave, avoid the freezer, and cook a meal from scratch." The first compromise that you would encounter is the fact that this local store may not have the food that you particularly want or cook it how you like. Then they may not offer prices that appeal to you and it might take longer to get it. When you go home and cook a meal you are losing time that you could be doing something else with and it could cost more and not taste as well.

"To really shake up the clerk at the department store, use cash rather than your credit card." When you use cash instead of your credit card you could inconvenience yourself because you may not have cash left for the week or could have had other plans with it. You are compromising your convenience and predictability.

"Avoid Hair Cuttery and other hair cutting chains; the next time your hair needs cutting, go to a local barber or hairdresser." When you go to your hairdresser you usually develop a personal relationship with them and do not usually trust just anyone with your hair. So if you just go to a local barber you are unfamiliar with them and the way they cut hair. In addition to that since they are only a local store they cannot compete with the prices that a chain offers.

"Instead of using a McChild care center, leave your child with a neighborhood parent interested in earning some extra money." In doing this you will be uncertain of the qualifications of the sitter and are unfamiliar with who is going to be watching your child. Security is also at risk, because you don't have any reliable sources that have used this service before.

"When dialing a business, always choose the voice mail option that permits you to speak to a real person." If you would only choose a voice mail option when calling someone you will not be able to resolve a problem immediately if it is something serious. You are then becoming anti-social, by only communicating through voice mail.

McDonaldization is good for society because is does a lot for us. For instance, they make it easier to make decisions on what and where to eat. It allows for the prices to be affordable, by being established in several places and attainable almost anywhere you want. This concept also, ensures us of the efficiency of the product that you are buying and makes you feel secure when purchasing it. It does have some negative effects but they are overweighed by the tremendous burden that it lifts off the average persons shoulder. Therefore making McDonaldization a good concept to follow.

Please note that this sample paper on Mcdonaldization is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on Mcdonaldization, we are here to assist you. The Cold War was a confrontation between military giants, and it was the balance of terror, which preserved the worlds peace. But the balance was maintained at a ridiculously high and costly level. Both the United States and the Soviet Union equipped themselves with thousands more nuclear missiles than were needed for self-defense. Those weapons, added to conventional armaments, cost the superpowers trillions of dollars.

In 155 President Eisenhower warned, The problem in defense spending is to figure how far you should go without destroying from within what you are trying to defend from without. One of many different estimates show that more than eight trillion dollars were spent, worldwide, on mainly nuclear weapons between 145 and 16. At one point, the worlds nuclear stockpiles held 18 billion metric tons of explosive energy 18,000 megatons. Today, they still hold about 8,000 megatons. Compared to these totals with the entire explosive energy released by all bombs dropped in the Second World War (6 megatons); in the Korean War (0.8 megatons); in Vietnam (4.1 megatons)., and one could possible realize the significance and foolish decisions of this "war".

Total Soviet expenditure during the Cold War is hard to estimate, but Eduard Shevardnadze thought that perhaps nearly 50 percent of Soviet national product was spent on defense, depriving the Soviet people of a better life.

The United States ended the Cold War, still a major superpower, with a booming economy. But the poor of the United States, could certainly have used some of the resources spent to the cause of Cold War armaments.

Order custom research paper on The Cold War

A continuing cost will be that for cleaning up weapons-related nuclear pollution. Estimates of what this will cost in the United States range from $100 billion to $400 billion. In Russia and the old U.S.S.R., the problem is intractable; they simply will not be able to deal with it.

Above and beyond the dollar cost is the cost in human lives. Though a nuclear catastrophe was avoided by the balance of terror, the Cold Wars firefights did take their toll in death millions in Korea, in Vietnam, and in Afghanistan; hundreds of thousands in Angola; tens of thousands in Nicaragua, El Salvador and Ethiopia; thousands in Hungary and Romania. Civilians accounted for more deaths than soldiers in uniform. Men and women died attempting to cross the Berlin Wall; strikers were shot in Poland; protesters were crushed by Soviet tanks in Prague; rebels were killed in Budapest; worshippers were gunned down on cathedral steps in San Salvador. Some of the wars people perished in, post-colonial struggles, would have happened anyway. But the Cold War made each local conflict it touched even more deadly. Covert actions by intelligence services killed tens of thousands more.

The Cold War stifled thought; for decades the people of Eastern Europe, living under a tyranny, were, someone said, buried alive -- cut off from and, as they felt, abandoned by the West. When the chance came, Germans, Czechs and Slovaks, Poles, Hungarians, Romanians and Bulgarians all rejected communism. So too did the peoples of the Americas; in Nicaragua the Sandinistas held free elections and lost them. Given the choice, people chose democracy. Only Fidel Castro in Cuba, the great Cold War survivor, kept the Red flag flying and the cause of socialist revolution alive.

China is the great question mark of the 1st century What will China do? The worlds most populist nation is still ruled by a Communist autocracy, though no longer along Marxist-Leninist lines. Will China succeed in reconciling Communist ideology with a free market? Will the Communist Party monopoly of power be broken there also?

Although no new world order is in place, the world is far safer for the Cold Wars ending. The Cold War really began during the Second World War, when talk of post-war treaties between the United States, Great Britain, and Russia were put on hold until the war ended. From early in 14 the American Government had repeatedly proclaimed the principle that no final decisions on matters of postwar frontiers or systems of government should be made until the end of the war (Graebner 5). The growth of distrust and opposition between the United States (US) and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR) begins with Joseph Stalin's pre World War II behavior. The US and Great Britain provided war tactics and military hardware to Moscow but in return were rewarded with a veil of secrecy. As early as the Tehran conference (September 14), Churchill confided to one of his staff that he considered Germany already finished; 'the real problem now is Russia
