If there is a secret of literature it can surely not be identified objectively. Literature is a vast patrimony of fictional writings conceived by a huge variety of authors with different historical and cultural standpoints. However, literature is a stimulus, which is consumed and appreciated not just by individuals but also by a group of individuals. That is to say that, beyond personal subjectivity with regard to literature there exist a space of communal appreciation of it. In this space of analysis, there exist a degree of agreement on the greatest texts of all time, and we can presume that the authors of these texts possess the secret of literature.

William Shakespeare, probably the most universally appreciated writer of all time can be seen to have this secret. Shakespeare's works are appreciated in this way for a variety of reasons, such as the stylistic quality of the language used. But the main reason is probably that these texts have a high degree of universal resonance with the very spirit of humanity. Perhaps Shakespeare has the secret of literature precisely because he has the secret of life. He feels the human existence in a remarkable way and is able to display this feeling in his work. Finally, it was Shakespeare who said, all the world is a stage . In this phrase he draws on the parallels between life and literature.

Also, we can look perhaps at the work of Marcel Proust. His three-thousand page novel In Search of Lost Time was generally acclaimed, perhaps above all, due to its amazingly human essence. The subject of unconscious memory, for example, is so well demonstrated in this work that the content of the novel has been compared with the supposedly more scientific writings of Sigmund Freud. Many are those who believe that one can learn as much from reading literature as from reading philosophy. The simple fact is that, just like philosophy and science, literature is a very human search.

Write your "The person who has the secret of literature has the secret of life." research paper

The human literary patrimony is like a mirror, reflecting back to the individual subject a vast quest for self-knowledge. Julio Cortazar's novel, Rayuela, is another great example. Rayuela, which has been comparated to James Joyce's Ulyses in terms of the impact, is a brilliantly human novel which display one man's turbulent search through memory and desire for some kind of point of truth. It seems then that successful authors are those who possess a highly developed sense of what life is about.

The Great Gatsby

Over the summer I read The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. It's a classic and well-known novel based in 1. Fitzgerald wrote many books but many people agree that this one is his beast. I think it was really good and entertaining, it never got boring or lost my interest.

Cheap Custom Essays on The Great Gatsby

To describe this book I would say it was like a soap opera. It had a lot of mystery, romance and shock. It starts out with a guy, Nick Carraway, moving to Long Island in the West Egg area. He rents a house next to huge mansion, which is owned by Jay Gatsby. He is known for throwing huge extravagant parties on the weekends. Nick later finds out that his cousin Daisy Buchanan lives in the East Egg of Long Island, the upper class section. So he goes to their house for dinner one night where he meets a lady named Jordan Barker. She tells Nick about Tom, Daisy's husband, who is having an affair with a girl named Myrtle Wilson. He meets Jordan again at Jay Gatsby's party. He makes friends with Gatsby and they start talking. He tells Nick he knew Daisy from his past in Louisville and is still in love with her. His parties are just to impress her, and he moved to West Egg to be closer to her. So Gatsby tells Nick to arrange a meeting with her. When they reunite they fall in love again and secretly sees each other for awhile. Nick, Jordan, Daisy, Tom, and Gatsby all drive to New York on a really hot day. They decided to get a hotel room to cool off and hang out. There Tom finds out that Daisy and Gatsby have been seeing each other and are in love. He was outraged, so Daisy and Gatsby left. On there way home they accidentally hit Tom's mistress with the car. When Nick, Jordan, and Tom drive back they find out that Gatsby's car has hit and killed Myrtle. Tom then tells Myrtle's husband, George, that it was Gatsby that drove the car. George finds Gatsby at his house and shoots him dead. When Tom got home he took Daisy with him back to their hometown, Chicago. Nick plans a small funeral for Gatsby, even though no one really came. He ends his relationship with Jordan and moves back to his hometown. Nick becomes Gatsby's only real friend even though he finds out what he did for money wasn't good. But he looks past that and was there for him as a friend like Gatsby was to him.

The main character of the book was Nick Carraway, and I found him to be really amirable. One reason why is he reunited Jay and Daisy, because he wanted them to have love. Another reason is when he heard rumors about Gatsby and things he had done he didn't believe them. One more reason I like him is he stuck by Gatsby's side when no one else would.

In my opinion there are a lot of lessons in this story, but the biggest is that money and popularity isn't everything. What matters is the people you love and who love you. In the end, before Gatsby died, I think he was figuring that out. Nick was a true friend who loved him and helped him discover himself.

How many people in here own something that has a sports related symbol on it? Come on, raise your hands… we're talking shirts w volleyballs, basketballs, baseballs on them, any type of material that you see athletes wear for sports related purposes.hats, headband wristbands, jerseys, high top sneakers…. Now take a look around…. What you do you notice? At least everyone in this room has something that's related to a sport or an physical activity. Sports influence on America is so great that most of us don't even recognize it. We don't recognize the basketball or the baseball on our shirts. We don't notice the fitted cap we put on our head everyday as something that was originally for baseball. We don't even recognize that when we buy gym shoes they're arranged in sports categories such as tennis, running, cross training, football gym shoes and basketball. We walk around here all the time not noticing how much our lives and the choices we make in fashion are based on sports.

Take the headband for example. This was used to soak up the sweat from athletes head. Prominent figures such as Bill Walton, Bill Russell, Dr. J and others used to wear these head bands. Now you have players wearing them in the NBA just to look good. For example… Tim Thomas of the Milwaukee Bucks used to wear two head bands per game… to look good. People also took advantage of the wrist bands. People like Pete Maravich, Larry Bird and Reggie Miller wore those. Now people take the wrist bands and head bands and sport them with outfits.

You know how everyone wears their shorts and pants baggy? Well that all took place when five freshmen from the University of Michigan walked on the court. The Fab Five… Jalen Rose, Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson. They publicized baggy shorts, bald heads black ankle socks and high top black gym shoes. Though they never won a championship, they changed the "cool athletes" style forever.

I've never seen any person with as many jerseys and rap icon "Fabolous". It just shows how much influence sports has on the music industry. You know who I thought would've never owned a jersey? Ronald Isley aka, Mr. Biggs in his new "Busted video. But wait…. Because not only do they have jerseys for men … throwbacks and all (throwbacks are old uniforms with retired players names on them or with just old jerseys that whose number still represents the current players) now they have the old type of jerseys they used to wear during the 50's 60's and 70's for women. The tight body hugging jersey and shorts set. They also have Jersey dresses both gown style and mini dress style. If you all saw the 00 NBA all star game Mariah Carey displayed both of these types of dresses. These dresses are very hot on the market right now. SO hot that college campuses are trying to launch college jersey dresses for football.

Sales of NBA merchandise are up 5% from last year with retail sales expected to reach .15 billion dollars. .15 billion dollars!!! We should all be able to conclude that this country is pretty influenced by the sports atmosphere. We watch the games, pick our favorite player, or favorite type of uniform, buy the jerseys wear it, then pick more jerseys that we desire. The same can be said for gym shoes, baseball caps, t shirts, etc. etc. Did you know that Nike is one of the top ten brand names in the world? Now you do.

We can also say that sports is like a comforter. I can give you an example off the top of my head The Great Depression. Because people were out of work, they needed something to keep them occupied; something that took time off of their hands. Sports helped pass time. A lot of communities built a lot of recreation center because people were interested in sports and wanted something to keep them busy. People during the Great Depression also wanted sports to be faster; they wanted it to be more entertaining. So instead of a tip off after every point scored in basketball, they just took it out and kept the game going. And instead of having to heave a big heavy ball in the air for football, they made the ball skinnier so the ball could go further in the air.

We can take a look at the 166 NCAA championship game between Texas-Western and the University of Kentucky. How five black players beat five white players in the championship game. When they beat Kentucky, it changed America. Basketball wasn't just a game for sharpshooters from basketball heavens such as Indiana and Kentucky, it started becoming known in the city. The number of black athletes at major colleges greatly increased after the historical game. Three years after Adolf Rupp said no black player would ever represent Kentucky in a uniform, Rupp recruited a black player.

We could go further back and take a look at Jackie Robinson and how he broke baseballs color barrier. Years after these events happened, America started to integrate. Sports shows that if players can get along on a team together, then people in America should be able to get along with each other.

We indulge ourselves in sports stars lives and their business because the media provides information on them. But we have a choice, to listen and conversate about it. and when Sammy Sosa's bat broke and cork was found in it, it just so happened to be the headline of a lot of newspapers. Or look at Kobe Bryant and him being charged with sexual assault. They broke into regular TV for his press conference. The media brings players lives into our homes and it's very hard not to listen to it. Remember the Baylor case with Patrick Dennehy? We couldn't help but listen to it and talk about how sports causes jealousy amongst people. Allen Iverson, Vince Carter and his bum knee and the media blowing it up saying he's soft. The media gives us a perception of people. Sometimes only the negative. Much Like Allen Iverson who is depicted in the media as a thug basketball player with tatoos who cares about nothing. Allen cares about winning. He cares about his family and his team mates for the most part. Or even Edgerin James who has a gold tooth and braids, who was asked by the Colts to cut his hair and gain a professional look. The media indulges into stars lives to give us the inside scoop so that we'll go to work the next day talking about it. It works. We'll go out, get into arguments over it and sometimes get so mad that it'll change your day. But that's the job of the media. TO get the people involved and increase our awareness on sports.

The media has always been involved in the sports world. When America was in the midst of the Great Depression and attendance was down, sports promoters were trying to think of ways to increase attendance and interest. In 14 Commisioner Judge Landis sold the rights to the World Series to Ford Motor Company. That was only the beginning for powerhouse businesses putting their names on sport related events. For this reason, sports became more commercialized. Maybe this is why sports is so influential. Because it's commercialized. Yeah, you have Mike Jordan with Gatorade, Hanes, Ballpark Franks, and many other endorsements. LeBron with Sprite, I mean almost every superstar athlete has a shoe out; not to mention the lifetime deals Allen Iverson signed with Reebok and T-Mac signed with adidas. What am I telling you? I'm telling you that the reason sports is so influential on America because even those that don't watch it know about it because of endorsements. Sports is a business first and a sport second. I say this because if teams didn't pay their players money there would be no sport which means there would be no jerseys, no headbands, no nothing. Well, okay, there would be that stuff but… it would never sell like it does today.

So when you're looking at the news gathering info about the Kobe Bryant case, just remember that it's most likely going to be the topic of discussion with your friends. And when you look for something to wear for tomorrow, just remember that there might be a chance that you pick out an outfit influenced by the sports world!

Looking back at the project I would say that I am very pleased with my final product. I feel that I worked through the different stages of development and produced a final design that fulfils the specifications very well. The few problems incurred during the development of the stem were tackled well and solved in an innovative way beneficial to the design. I felt that I managed my time well, setting myself target goals of which to reach week by week ensuring that I didnt fall behind in my project. The research of my project took longer than the time I had designated to it as it was much more vast and detailed than I had perceived. The realisation of the stem also took longer than I had imagined partially due to the accessibility of the machines needed. The machining of the stem was a slow process, as it had to be done with great care and precision. I had not calculated the time required for the marking and dimensioning of the metal before it could be machined.

If the project were to be embarked on again I would approach the design of the stem from a different angle. More detail would be taken into the different materials and manufacturing processes available as the stem would be designed to be innovative in its material, manufacture and function. Weather the stem would be of carbon fibre, magnesium or another extravagant material would all have to be researched. The way in which it was manufactured would of course be dictated to some extent by what it was made from. Its function as a stem would also be innovative, providing suspension or adjustability or the merging of the handlebars and steering tube into one unit. All these areas would be researched and analysed before starting with manufacture.

If the current stem I designed were to reach mass manufacture careful consideration would have to be taken into account about its manufacturing line. However a company would most likely CNC machine the stems out of solid billet L165 aluminium. CNC manufacturing (Computer Numerically Controlled) is the use of automatic lathes in conjunction with computers. A user will enter specific information onto a computer that will then be sent on to a lathe or milling machine via g-codes giving the required component shape, machining instructions and tooling requirements. This system is much faster and has the added bonus of not allowing for human error. The stem would then have to be marketed/advertised before release. This could be done in numerous ways such as magazine advertisements, sponsorship, and promotion.

Finally I am very happy with my project as I feel that I fulfilled the design brief and met with the specifications as best I could. The project has given me great satisfaction in its realisation and has inspired me to continue working and machining metal. It has also allowed me to develop my skills teaching me how to use a lathe and milling machine with confidence.

Employees should feel comfortable sharing their personal interest in the workplace as long as they do so in a way that does not disrupt the professional environment or the harmony between coworkers. Employees will naturally seek to connect with one another on more than a professional level, and indeed they should. People are happiest and most productive at work when they feel valued as individuals and part of a community.

Anyone who has cheered for a colleague running a marathon or cooked for a coworker suffering a loss knows the value of sharing personal concerns in the workplace. People like to rally around a cause; they want to feel connected to one another. When one of my colleagues announced the she was raising money for a boy with cystic fibrosis by running in a Dublin, Marathon, the entire organization was energized. Most of us knew little about Pam rather reserved women who had recently relocated to Atlanta. But when she revealed her intent to run for the marathon, she opened the door for us to find out about her interest in running and her familys struggle with cystic fibrosis. People enjoyed pulling together to support Pam and took pride in helping her reach her goal.

Likewise, when my bosss mother underwent chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer, members of our department took turns preparing meals. The tasks associated with organizing the schedule, making sure we had every night covered and varying the menu brought us together in a positive way. We accomplished more than putting food on the table of a family totally overwhelmed by long commutes to the hospital. We found a new respect for one another and new reasons to look beyond our petty day-to-day problems. Deep down, I think we also felt comforted by the thought that we are part of a community where people look out for one another.

I recall hearing an NRP news story about study an on job satisfaction. Employees rank a sense of community above salary as the key satisfaction. Satisfied employees are more productive, more generous with their expertise, and less likely to take their talents elsewhere.

Of course, there are limits to the extent to which employees should bring their personal lives into the workplace. An employee should not turn his or her office into a campaign headquarters for a political or social cause. Nor should a worker steal time form the employer to pursue his or her private interests. Personal concerns should never dominate the workplace, but in so far as an employee can be professional and a multi-dimensional personal. He or she should share personal interests.

The Hero In The Camo Suit

Many television shows indicate heroes as being large, muscle men, that can fly and

fight well, such as superman, there to save everyone from their troubles by flying across

through the rose-colored glasses that some may never recognize. He's not seen as much for a stranger, but for me, he is more than any other in my life and has made me look at life through his light. His qualities represent what I believe a hero truly is. This man, that I see as my hero, is and always will be my hero. He is my grandpa.

"Grandpa was a military man ready to stand for his country", as I hear the words of my grandma letting us know how prepared he was while waiting for the bus in the times of the Vietnam War. "He was a very determined young man at the time," said grandma, as her eyes twinkled when she overlooked the black and white photos of him ready to leave for months at a time. I was young when hearing these stories of grandpa's bravery and endurance in life. It made me think of him as my super-hero. Not a flying creature like superman, but a man that flies directly into my heart with love and compassion. He helps me through the rough times, congratulates me on my successful moments and understands my behaviors in every situation.

Things weren't easy being the poor kid that I was, but I knew grandpa understood my position, because he played the role fifty years before I arrived on earth. Constant storytelling made me think hard on how life was in his time of living. His words, "I walked barefoot to school in the icy winter days" came every time I felt like complaining of being poor. It made me grateful of what I have in my day and age. Being a teen and thinking that life is a struggle in this time period has always been a thought-catcher for grandpa. Serious understanding skills had to ring for him. He just didn't understand how teens these days find it hard, when in his time period there wasn't a t v., microwave or running water in the small town of Black Ankle. Every wrinkle and mark printed on his pale hand showed me that he worked hard for many things in life. Grandpa taught me so much about bravery, hard-work, and managing life by using priorities. When things became rough for my parents financially in life, Grandpa was at the door ready to accept my sister and I in his home to stay until things worked out.

Many things have led me to the belief that Grandpa is the hero in my life. The one person that I can count on in any situation. He can pull me out of sorrow and spark a smile on my face in no time. The guy that fought in the Vietnam War, taught me the value of life and work, and gave me the one quote that I really needed, "Its not what you take when you leave this world, its what you leave behind you when you go". That quote made an impact on me. Grandpa didn't leave the world, as of yet, but he leaves with me the love of our country, the power of wisdom in life, and the consequences of being the hero that he was and is to this day.

As the years go on, drug use in the United States is getting far too casual and far too widespread. This is a growing problem obviously, and also is a growing concern for many parents. So, what do we do about such an obvious problem? The government has decided to fuel a multi-million dollar campaign against use of illegal narcotics, but everyone knows this plan has not been as effective as they expected it to be. In the end this war on drugs that they are exercising is actually a problem caused by a problem. Millions of taxpayer's money is directed toward fighting the use of drugs, but as anyone can see it's not working all that well. The best solution to fight drugs is common to everyday lifestop the problem at the source. This is why the United States needs an army-controlled border in order to monitor the drug trafficking as well as the illegal immigrants.

An army-controlled border would have many advantages. First of all, there would be more enforcement of laws commonly violated these days. Also, a beefed-up border with an army would catch immigrants carrying illegal substances at places that are currently vulnerable to entrance into the U.S. Since border patrol is overworked and understaffed already, it is in dire need of aid by the army. An army-controlled border is a necessity for the containment of drugs and for overall national security.

Everyone is not in support of an army at the border, however. For one thing, if the United States moved an army to the border, one could anticipate that Mexico would take it as a threat to their own security. This in turn could possibly lead to another world war, which no one wants. This is why a gradual infiltration of the army is necessary. Year after year the government could add more and more troops based on the effectiveness of their inhabitance. This way, as long as the U.S. kept good relations with Mexico, it would be less of a shock to them.

One could anticipate the government to object to the proposed solution also. Many officials would argue that the plan would be a waste of taxpayer's money. As anyone knows, though, if the army did limit the amount of drugs entering the U.S., it would actually be saving the taxpayer's money. They might also argue that it would slow down entrance into the U.S. at the border tremendously, which is a definite possibility. However, this is a small inconvenience compared to the advantages of having the army there.

Custom writing service can write essays on War on Drugs

Currently the border patrol is doing its best possible to stop the flow of drugs. Their efforts are not enough though. The government has tried in the past to increase security at the border, but obviously it has not made a dent in the trafficking of drugs. There is a great need for an army controlled border with thorough inspections. If this was possible, less money would be spent on ad campaigns against drugs, and more drugs would be eradicated at the source. Until then, drugs will continue to flow in and out of the U.S. Are your children safe?

It all begun in the morning when we arrived at school at eight everyone carrying there packs and sleeping bags. Some with tents and some wondering were they would sleep that night. We hopped on the buss's after being checked off at about quarter to nine. I was lucky enough to ride up front in the beaten mini-bus which Mr. bridges would be driving. The ride up was not very long but Mr. Bridges beautiful singing made it even shorter. As we arrived in Ballarat Mr. Bridges gave us his local tour guide talk seeing as though he grew up in the tiny town. We arrived at the Pax Hill scout camp thank full that we would not have to listen to Mr. Bridges sing. First we just mucked around throwing some balls around and picking our tent areas which was important the less amount of rock and foliage underneath the better nights sleep. It was then time to set up the tents. This was a fairly easy task but thinking about how three guys would fit in that small tent we had managed to put up. With all that in the back in the mind it was time to get in our groups and begin the activities. Orienteering was first fairly easy but a lot of fun running around having some fun while looking for little yellow poles. The post were easy to pick out except for the ones hidden by bark and leaves. After orienteering was catching shrimp in a little very poor looking pond. We tied some raw meet to string then to a stick and threw it out and hoped. No luck we caught two shrimp while supposedly others had caught 14. Then time for obstacle course. As a group we had to get through a tire without touching it. This proved very hard but a great time. After this we had to cook our meals in the little gas stoves was a lot of fun seeing what people had bought, someone had bought lamb cutlets form home with veggies. A nice dinner out in the bush. Before nightfall it was time for abseiling. A ten metre walk rose above. The instructors jumped down like it was nothing to hard. As I leaned over the edge I realised it wasn't so simple and I was just hoping I had a good change of jocks. Once I arrived on the ground I was happy to stay there and we set off for the Camp fire. A huge fire was lit and people enjoyed adding to it and roasting marshmallows. From the light of the fire it was time for the mine. The mine was pitch black and with only two torches in there many were scared to move forward. It made it even harder with huge Mr. Gotch and Mr. Bridges jumping out at you from little corners of the mine, if the look of them didnt scare you then the surprise did. This was all fun and some were loving being out in the open but some would've rather stayed inside. But now it was time for bed. Many found it hard to sleep on the hard and rocky ground and with not much sleep many rose very grumpy in the morning and weren't ready for the morning bush walk the teachers weren't the kids favourite people after the walk we packed our tents and returned home. The camp was a great one and I didnt realise one and a half days could be so fun. Thanks to Mr. Bridges and the other teachers who helped out.

Beowulf

If you order your research paper from our custom writing service you will receive a perfectly written assignment on Beowulf. Beowulf is an Anglo-Saxon epic poem, which relates the adventures of Beowulf, a Scandinavian hero who saves the Danes from the seemingly invincible monster Grendel and, later, from Grendels mother. He then returns to his own country, Geatland, and dies in old age in a vivid fight against a dragon. The poem is about encountering the monstrous, defeating it, and then having to live on in the exhausting aftermath. This poem's point of view is a vital part in the telling of the story of Beowulf.

Beowulf's point of view could be affected by the time the story was first told. The story was believed to have been composed sometime between the 8th century and the time of the manuscript in the early 11th century. The poem itself was known and had been elaborated upon for centuries by minstrels who recited the heroic exploits of the son of Ecgtheow and nephew of Hygelac, King of the Geats, whose kingdom was what is now Southern Sweden. The earliest surviving epic poem written in English, Beowulf was most likely composed in the seventh or eighth century, but being more precise depends on where one believes the poem was composed.

A story told from the family point of view could alter how the story turns out or send a certain message. It is now thought possible that both of the following royal lines shared a common ancestry. A contender, which has come seriously into the weighing up as a result of the Sutton Hoo discovery, is seventh century East Anglia. Not only was the ship burial (which dates to 65AD) weird like the burials of Scyld and Beowulf, but the grave goods revealed the East Anglian court of the Wuffingas to be unexpectedly sophisticated and closely linked to the Swedish royal house at Uppsala. This is why these royal lines are thought to share ancestry. A scholar, Howell Chickering, questioned if it was through the East Anglian court that detailed knowledge of Scandinavian tribal history in Beowulf became available in England. He also asked if the poem composed in such a way that it told East Anglians something of their semi-historical, semi-legendary Scandinavian ancestors There is a good case for believing that Beowulf was composed in Suffolk, at the palace of Rendlesham, within living memory of the great ship-burial in 65AD.

The point of view can also determine how much we know about the characters in the story depending on to what extent the narrator gives details. The narrator recounts the story in the third person, from a generally objective standpoint, detailing the action that occurs. The narrator does have access to every character's depth. We see into the minds of most of the characters at one point or another, and the narrative can move forward and backward in time with considerable freedom.

Beowulf is a very adventurous yet gloomy story. Since this story was told from mouth to mouth, anything could have changed the point of view. The time the story was first told, family ancestry and narrators point of view are all different aspects that are taken in perspective when this story is told or analyzed. That makes this story all the more interesting.

Alcohol is one drug that by society is taken too lightly. It is not illegal and it is not taken seriously enough by anyone. It is seen as the substance you need to have a good time; substance that should be used only in moderation. Unfortunately this isn't explained in the commercial with the models and celebrities who are usually celebrating in the beach. Many people begin drinking after seeing commercials like these. Unfortunately this isn't the only reason why people begin to drink heavily.

There are many reasons that people begin to drink. First of all they do it to experiment. Some people want to see what it is like; this is why so many people enjoy it as much. The commercials on t.v. invite people to live nice and luxurious, and happy lifestyles that the people in their commercial are living, and this appeals to many. Another thing that many people begin this habit is because they are trying to escape emotional pain. Many people in this generation are stressed or upset and they see alcohol as their outlet and this often leads to excess. This never leads to a solution, and even causes bigger problems in the end. Peer pressure can often lead to drinking too, it is seen as the number one cause. It is very common to see others saying" You should try this drink, everyone's doing it! Don't be a coward!" Many want to fit in and eventually succumb to the others plea to drink. This is especially true in teen years when teens are trying to make an identity for themselves. Another less viewed reason is boredom. Many people are bored, simply because they have too much free time in their hands, and they turn to alcohol to bring some fun into their lives, which this is the last thing you should resort to. Lastly the reason that is mostly linked with teenagers is rebellion. Many teens are making an effort to being independent and "mature" and to some this means doing something you aren't supposed to be doing so that you separate from your parents, this is a method that very seldom works. It isn't easy to find the exact age that people start to drink; it is thought to be from twelve to sixteen, by this time nearly 4% of young people have tried alcohol. Another factor that usually isn't discussed is the parents drinking which also affects when the child will begin to drink as well. If the parent drinks heavily it is more likely that the child will eventually become a heavy drinker too. This is a serious problem that many parents fail to see, or rather would like not to acknowledge.

The effects and problems that come along with alcohol are often hidden from the general public. We associate the aftermath of drinking with throwing up and headaches when really the effects are much, much worse. I'll start off with the short term effects of drinking or the things that happen in a short period of time after drinking. Some of these effects are slower reaction tines and reflexes, heavy sweating, blurry or double vision, nausea and vomiting, lower reasoning ability, lower inhibitions, poor motor coordination, inability to drive a car, slowed heart rate, slowed breathing rate, reduced blood pressure, Anxiety, restlessness, mental confusion, memory loss, coma, and death from respiratory arrest. These effects happen in a short period of time, not even years, but hours and days. At first you are excited, even more sociable. You become more talkative, and more confident. These are the things that the people on t.v. and billboards seem to be feeling. What isn't portrayed is the shorter attention span, the lack of judgment and control, and the emotional instability. Many people don't comprehend as well as when they are sober, they also become drowsy. The next level is confusion, when the person is disoriented, where their vision begins to distort, they can't coordinate their muscles as well as they used to, they stumble and stagger and their speech is slurred. The stage after this is when they don't respond to stimuli , they are less conscious and begin to vomit. The stage after this is when you enter a state of coma due to the intoxication, and this is when you are completely unconscious. The stage after this is sadly enough death, which can occur from respiratory arrest. These things aren't shown in the commercials now are they?

If you thought that these were the only effects that occur, you couldn't be more wrong. Years of heavy drinking can lead to many other body problems, as well as to the mind and emotions, which are equally at stake. The extent of the damage to the body depends on many things such as the duration and severity of the abuse, the gender of the person, and the age. Men are usually more likely to develop an alcohol abuse problem, two thirds of alcohol abusing and dependent individuals are men. Besides these statistics women usually experience more alcohol related diseases than men. Women experience greater physical damage after fewer tears of drinking. The diseases also progress more rapidly in women than in men. Women have death rates 50-100% greater than men in alcohol related deaths. Heavy alcohol abuse is also dangerous for young people. Studies have shown that heavy drinkers at a young age have shown shrinkage in the part of the brain dealing with memory and learning. Alcohol can also prevent teeth from growing full size; it also interferes with bone and muscle growth. People who drink as teenagers have a much higher risk top develop osteoporosis in their later years. Some long term effects of alcohol abuse are birth defects, liver damage, pancreas damage, heart disease, bone damage, cancer, and brain damage. Other health problem include weakened vision, mal nutrition (they drink rather than eat) water retention, skin disorder, dilated blood vessels, heartburn, nausea, gastritis, ulcers, sexual problems, reduced sperm count, less mobile sperm, abnormal sperm cells, menstrual difficulties, decreased fertility, and early menopause. What many people don't know is that there are some alcohol specific diseases. One of these is Alcoholic Liver Disease, which begins with fatty liver. This disease seems to injure the liver by blocking the normal metabolism of protein, fats and carbohydrates. Cirrhosis is another disease thought to be linked directly to alcoholism. This causes Edema and Ascites (when liver loses ability to make protein) and when water accumulates in water and abdomen, Bruising and bleeding, jaundice (yellowing of the skin), itching of the skin, gall stones, toxins in the blood and in the brain, sensitivity to medication, portal hypertension varices, and problems to other organs. Another major problem today is when pregnant mothers drink alcohol. This is called Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and it leads to many complications to the unborn baby that are permanent. These problems are both mental and physical, and require a lifetime of special care. Many people regard drinking during pregnancy as an insignificant matter when in reality is very serous, and alcohol consumption during pregnancy can be harmful to the unborn fetus. These are some of the endless list of long term effects that affect the human body.

Many mentors, and teachers and parents insist that the first time that you use a substance it hooks you on to it. Too bad that we don't listen to these warnings, they may be true but most of the population is too stubborn to realize this. We have to take actions to stop it, not only warnings and reprimands. Some solutions that I would offer would be to cut back on the amount of advertisement of alcohol. There are t.v. commercials on the t.v. everyday and at all times. They entice the public to go out and try it, because it seems enjoyable. There are billboards on every corner of the streets, highways, etc. Every time you turn on the radio there are commercials telling their listeners to relax with the newest and "now tastier and lower in carbs" alcoholic beverage. There should be a time set when these types of things should be aired, maybe at night when people that are mature enough go out and drink. I don't say to abolish all alcoholic commercials, because the industry does have to make some money but the goal should be to limit the air time. This will limit the need to use this substance to fit in, and may even lessen peer pressure. Less exposure of the substance means less time to wonder what its like or diminish the craving for it.

The poem â€The Garden of love” by William Blake is about a person who tells his story that he went to the garden of love, where he used to play and saw that a chapel was built in the center and the gates were closed with an order not to enter. The garden of love that he found bore the sweet flowers he knew and instead it was filled with graves and tombs-stones, priests who were binding briars around his joy and desires.

In Blake’s poem we see the church as the transcendent figure that enforces religion and social morals on the people and many people were sexually repressed at this time. The narrator is writing about his personal experience, the church repressed him from expressing love, joy and desires and he could not play anymore the game of love so, love became a cemetery. The standards set by the church made it impossible for anyone to play the games of love. The doors of the chapel were â€shut” this word has a strong weight and is very distressing. And â€Thou shalt not” is another emphasize to that feeling. I think that the man lost his innocence and realized that things are different than the way he saw them before.

Another way to analyze the poem is by seeing the Garden of Love as a metaphor to the love between a man to his God, the narrator wanted to be close to God I went to the Garden of Love as he used to be when he was little but found the church standing in his way A Chapel was built in the midst. The church presented here as an obstacle between men and God And the gates of this Chapel were shut/ And Thou shalt not writ over the door. Blake gives emphasis to the word Thou shalt not to indicate once more how oppressive the church is. He attacks the priests because, instead of offering Gods comfort as they were meant to do, they become like judges or police officers telling men what they can or cannot do And Priests in black gowns were walking their rounds/ And binding with briars my joys and desires.

Help with essay on Blake and Wordsworth

The poem â€She dwelt among the untrodden ways” by William Wordsworth is about a girl, Lucy who was a maid and lived unknown, no one paid attention to her or saw that she was exist. Hardly anyone noticed when Lucy died except to the narrator who felt that it made a difference to him.

Wordsworth describes, through imagery, a young woman who has experienced terrible loneliness and sadness. †A maid whom there were none to praise and very few to love”. No one knew her, or when she ceased to be; however, it made a difference to Wordsworth. Even if no one cared, he did and that made the difference. Wordsworth seems to be revealing the heartless attitude of society at that time towards the lower class. It appears as though Wordsworth is describing the struggle of the lower class people to exist and the contradiction because no one can live in loneliness and despair. In Wordsworth we can envision death but Wordsworth also shows us through his poetry that life can be eternal, because he remember Lucy.
