Common Themes In Dickens' Works.

During the Victorian age Charles Dickens writing spoke out against many of societies ills. Dickens works often reflected his experiences growing up and the hardships he experienced. Many of the characters and settings in his books mirror people and places he once knew. Dickens frequently portrays the urban surroundings as terrible and harsh places, which they were for him, growing up in the slums of London working at factories.

A reoccurring theme I found throughout every novel our class read was how much Dickens used from past experiences. In Hard Times Dickens shows the harshness of Victorian Age industrialization by using Coke town as an example. Coketowns residents are twisted by the population from the factories, both rich and poor lack emotions and morals. Many of Dickens characters become "dehumanized" due to the harsh conditions they are surrounded with. His early work, David Copperfield, is regarded by many to be an autobiographical work. Another trait I found was that of his hero's. Dickens hero's were mostly ordinary people put into difficult situations, this might have been one reason for his popularity with the Victorian audiences. The Hero of the work was usually unsuspecting, misguided, and unwilling. They often made wrong decisions and were victims of circumstance. Pip, in Great Expectations, must find out who he truly is and frequently makes mistakes. Pip falls prey to Estella and Miss. Havisham, turns his back on his family, and even the Abel Magwitch who financed his upbringing to a gentleman. However, the misguided hero finally does right in the end and realizes the true truths and morals of society. This quality of fallibility gives Dickens characters more human like depth and complexity. Dickens uses his characters to point out the wrongs of society. In almost every novel the issue of class system and the hypocrisy of the upper class are brought into play. This is very obvious in A Tale of Two Cities between the poor peasants and the opulent aristocracy of France. Another element found frequently is the use of children, their innocence and defenselessness able Dickens to show the ills of society in stark contrast to them. In Oliver Twist, Oliver is manipulated and used by the adults of his world. His future was shaped by people who cared little for him. Many of Dickens works are rather depressing, over all they are dismal and show the harshness of reality. It is not until the end that the characters experience better times and happiness, at least those who make it to the end. But often times there is one character who is uncompromising to society and stand to his or her moral truths. Joe Gargery is a prime example from Great Expectations, Joe is hard working, honest, and enjoyable. Mr. Lorry is another character that stands firm throughout the novel, providing the guiding light for the misguided hero.

Custom Essays on Common Themes In Dickens' Works

Dickensian style greatly effected how future works would be written. Dickens put forth a great effort to make the reader feel as if they were involved with the plot and carefully develops the characters and surroundings. Dickens works were often episodic (mostly due to the way they were published) and depressing, but had satisfying endings and showed meaningful result. After reading and hearing discussions on several of his greatest works I have found that Dickens works are highly meaningful and portray human traits and problems still found today.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

I intend to take up this course so as to increase my knowledge base in the field of design engineering or manufacturing engineering. I consider myself to be suitable for any of the aforementioned courses, as I have undergone extensive coursework basics of both the subjects in my B.E.

In design engineering I have undergone course work on S.O.M, design engineering (which includes Theories of failures in machine components, different kinds of stresses acting on machine components etc.), design of machine components (from simple shafts to complex gears, joints etc.). My project work in final semester included design of "Link Bearing Bracket" for SARAS AIRCRAFT that was carried out in NAL, Bangalore.

Write my Essay on why m.b.a. for me

In manufacturing process, I have undergone course work on basics of manufacturing process & also out of my own interest I had opted for computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) subject in my 6th semester. My project work in final semester included CNC Production of Aircraft component using Hinumeric HMT CNC machine.

By taking up this course I want to learn the advancement & latest techniques used in designing of machine components for example - In Aircraft industry though more emphasis is given to light weight or thin section components, strength of the component is never compromised.

To design such components ribs are used to connect thin sections, Fillets are used instead of sharp edges as they make stress flow uniform over the section. I want to learn how latest technology in design could be used so that prototype testing is done using powerful computer softwares in order to achieve economical prototype testing.

In manufacturing industry, the most burning issue is inventory control and hence new techniques like JIT (Just in time) production process is widely used. Through this course I want to learn how latest techniques could be used to overcome bottlenecks in production.

Ultimately, my goal after finishing up this course would be to become an entrepreneur so that I can utilize all my skills & knowledge to set up an industry comparable with the best utilizing the latest advancements in science & technology. Finally, I would also like to contribute to my Nation's development by providing a few job opportunities.

Mental cases

Mental cases was again written by Wilfred Owen it is also 8 lines long and again to is written in first person view to show the emphasis on the horridness of the war on the soldiers. However unlike Dulce Et decorum Est Mental cases has no obvious rhyming scheme.

This poem was written to illustrate the effect of the war on the participating soldiers. The subjects of the poem are inmates in a military hospital. The poem displays a side of the war worse then loosing your life; losing your mind due to shellshock. Wilfred Owen describes how they are now doomed to relive the terrible acts that they have witnessed on the battlefield. The mood of the poem is one of anger; this is shown overtly and covertly throughout the poem again with the use imagery.

Wilfred Owen starts the poem in the first stanza by asking five different questions in relation to the subject of state of the soldiers' minds. The first and the one that stands out the most is 'who are these?' this shows that the state of the soldiers is so inhuman that the author don't recognize these people as human. The next two questions asks why they sit so dismayed. They sort of display the notion that the men with shellshock are in a state of their own mind, which enslaves them and keeps them unhealthy mentally (concentrates on evilness). The next questions concentrates on the imagery of the men and gives the image of something dead that is a constant pain that is caused by his own mind. Wilfred Owen displays this endless pain with the phrase 'stroke on stroke'. The final question is 'Ever from their hair and through their hands' palms misery swelters. Surely we have perished sleeping, and walk hell; but who these hellish'. This gives the idea that even though men have died fighting; the creatures that the author now sees are too much to even

The second stanza is to do with the answering of the questions in the first verse. The first line describes how the minds of the soldiers have metaphorically been raped by the men who they have seen killed. 'These are the men whose mind the dead have ravished'. The rest of the stanza concentrates on the way the men had no chance to escape and that it was massacre; 'Memory fingers in their hair of murders'. The endless amount of pain that has been inflicted on them is also displayed 'Rucked too thick for these men's extrication'. Finally the stanza shows the carnage and squander of human life and sanity this is shown the two lines 'batter of guns and shatter of muscle, carnage incomparable, and human squander'.

The final stanza is the conclusion to the mess that the First World War has created by the scene of the soldiers suffering from shellshock. Wilfred Owen shows us that they live in constant pain by the fact that they go to sleep with imagery of evil in their mind. Knowing that they will wake up to it in the morning; 'sunlight seems a blood-smear, night comes blood-black.' Wilfred Owen also gives the men meaning and imagery by the oxymoron 'thus their heads wear this hilarious, hideous'. Finally again like in Dulce Et Decorum Est he ends with criticizing the old way of dying gloriously in war by showing the product of the worst death of dying in war. Trying to return the favor dealt to them by endlessly pawing at the sane.

This poem is a shocking reminder of the mental toll of the war. The horrific language tries to breed horrific thoughts in our own minds and succeeds again and again. This creates an image of pure horror and makes the reader appreciate and respect the pain the men who had shellshock went through.

War Heroes of Tomorrow

Brandon Seguin

While strolling through war training camps of Canada's future armed forces it is easily seen that they are in desperate need of help. Seeing these fairly uncoordinated people trying desperately to climb over five foot barriers and crawl under barricades it is obvious that our army needs help. After the war in 00 and 004 our nation's qualified troops were washed out, now it is 010 the threat or war is imminent again. These people instead of spending time earning a useful education or working are nearly forced to spend all their time training desperately to later fight for our country. However, many of these people drop out of the training and end up not continuing their education and not getting a decent job. Why not just make soldiers from day one? Why must all this time and money be spent training these useless people when technology can create the perfect soldier?

Imagine a farm full of young women trying to earn some decent money by becoming the factory for these future soldiers. They are artificially inseminated with these super soldiers, come back in nine months, give birth get their payment of whatever amount of money and do it all over again. They would give birth to these future war machines, which are going to be full of battle techniques, fearlessness, strength, speed, agility, and so forth. These people will even have the ability to do summersaults and maybe even a back flip.

Buy To Be or Not To Be term paper

After birth these 'human death machines' or whatever else you may feel to call them will be taken to a school where only these soldiers live to learn on their own; learning life saving skills as Battle Ship and Risk. They will be genetically bred to have very little or no emotions and morals. This way they can kill whoever we tell them to and they will never argue about it. When they turn 18, just a few months of basic training will turn these young people into the greatest infantry on the planet. They will be able to run for kilometers on end, the can go days without sleep, and they would be able to survive with little nutrition. Even if these 'human death machines' die they will be missed by no one because they are just instruments of war.

Since these soldiers will have no emotions, their lives will be expendable. After the wars they will also be able to clean up all the rubble and carcasses of the war torn battle fields. They can go around picking up the dead bodies playing catch and then maybe if they feel like it they can bury the carcasses. On a more serious note, they can be 'genetically programmed' to fix automobiles and buildings, so when the war is done they can fix all the damaged tanks and planes along with all the destroyed buildings. When the war is over they can go be auctioned off on e-bay to the highest bidder, since they can also be genetically modified to do chores.

They will be the best servants; they would follow every command exactly and complete it with perfection. They can fix any car problems and they can paint your house. These soldiers would do the dirtiest of chores, clean your gutters and even clear out your septic tank. Personally, the best trait that these machines would have is the ability to protect. However, you would not want to anger them at any time, they have been designed to kill, so please be gentle.

Before something of this kind can be effectively put into action, it must be understood that actions such as this would cost our country billions of dollars that we don't even have. Who wants a perfect army anyways, seeing uncoordinated people trying to jump over barriers and crawl under barricades is extremely amusing and entertaining.

Something that drives me up the wall in this school is, if you have long hair you are doomed to have it in your eyes no matter what! "Take that off NOW!" yes a lot of us have heard it before even if your "hat" is any sort of meager piece of cloth. I for one have long hair and yes, it constantly gets into my eyes. Cut it you say? Oh ye of little mind. So many times have those words been uttered in my direction and I HATE IT!! Cutting my hair is NOT an option! Besides, many girls prance about our school with hair restraining devices and no one gives them a second thought. "But they're girls," they say "they are just trying to keep their hair out of there eyes." Well I say HELLO!!!! That's what im doing, but because I am male I am doomed to this sexist attitude.

There are a few teachers who look down on this attitude and for that I salute them. Yes there are a few out there who let me where my sleeve in class. Those are the teachers that I think know that a few rules made by our mediocre administration are as inane in the membrane as kicking a baby is cruel. Though their acts of understanding are appreciated, it is not enough to quench trhe oppressing fire that is our school's administration. I believe that our principle knows that no one in this school likes him and he is trying to maintain respect by enforcing useless rules that cause more trouble then they resolve.

His little minion, and our vice principle is the one who runs the school though. But I have respect for our vice principle, he is a nice guy and hasn't done anything to make me think otherwise. I also think that he understands my hair problem but is forced to carry out the law by making me remove my sleeve because he is under the principle. I think he is driven by morals and his principals tell him to always obey your boss, which is a very good thing to do in life. So until im shown something to make me think otherwise, I don't blame the vice principle.

Buy Sleeve Pet Peeve We want hair restraining devices! term paper

Will my fight for the right to have and enjoy long hair ever come to an end? Not until a more capable principle is brought in and turns this scholl back into the excellent school it should be. Maybe if the principle didn't spend all his time tucked away in his office he could make this school like that. One hardly ever sees him around the school and that's because I think he's stopped caring. He knows that he has failed and has secretly conceded.

But lo! Mr. Principle man, you can redeem yourself! The first step to salvation is stop being such a friggin' Nazi! Understand that there are NO gangs in Tantramar! There never has been and there probably never will be. Bandanas aren't hats, and we the students don't where them to "defy" the man. We wear them TO KEEP THE HAIR OUT OF OUR EYES!!! And maybe if you weren't on such a power trip you could realize this. I'm not the only one who thinks this either. No im no lone brigand in the war against oppression in our school. I know many guys with long hair and im sure there are lots of girls who wish they could throw on a bandana to keep the hair away from their face! So Mr.Priciple hear our call and abolish the rules that we all no don't make any sense! IT'S THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE!!!

Europa Europa is a brilliant, methodical and horrific movie that is based on a true story. Agnieszka Holland (director) leads a large cast staring Marce Hofschneider, Julie Delpy and Hanns Zishler. Europa Europa is a movie about the Second World War and its effect on a young Jewish boy.

In this film you are introduced to a young boy in a Jewish family. This family is very close and happy until the night of the broken glass when their shop was destroyed and the young boy's sister was killed. The young boy and the rest of the family mourned her death and soon decided to travel to Poland. When the war began and Germany broke the Nazi Soviet Pact, the young boy and his older brother were ordered to leave their new home and head east. They left unwillingly and were soon separated. The young boy was captured by the Germans and sent to the Hitler Youth school under a false identity. Time passed by and nearing the end of the war he is given a gun and ordered to attack the Russians. He refuses and flees. At the Russian camp he meets with his brother that he has not seen for 6 years and hears the terrible news of the death of his parents.

The Night of the broken glass was only one of the many acts of cruelty, and pure wickedness performed by the Germans during the war. It was totally unprovoked, and resulted in the destroying of many Jewish businesses. Europa Europa is only one of a few movies that is able to truly capture this feeling. You are able to see the before and after effects on a Jewish family, and imagine how many Jewish people that night wood have been morning the death of a loved one, and questioning their future. The cast is uniformly excellent at capturing and sustaining this feeling.

Do my essay on Nazi Germany CHEAP !

In Europa Europa there is a scene explaining how people living in Poland chose to either live in the east with the soviets or to the west with the Germans. This takes place on a river where you see the young boy and his brother boarding a ship. Unfortunately there is such a crowd that the brothers are separated and find each other on different boats. As they sail down the river towards the eastern part of Poland they encounter another ship with people preferring to live under the Nazi rule.

A very interesting scene is when the young man is a komissor in an orphanage. One day after the young man gave a speech a group of Christians got up from their seats and claimed that God is real. In the U.S.S.R. they are atheists so one of the teachers told him, if God is real then pray to him and make him drop candy from the sky. After a minute or so, the teacher then said "let's ask Uncle Stalin for some candy" and they wood drop some candy from the roof.

The ghetto scenes were very powerful, showing the unsanitary conditions and frequent death rate. While on the tram through the ghettos we were able to hear comments about the ghettos and see how the Germans painted the windows so that the Germans could not see what the true conditions were.

The Movie takes you through a whole sequence of events in a few minutes when in real life it would have taken months or years. It is for this reason that at some parts it is slightly unbelievable, and difficult to follow. The film contains a lot of useful information, but it is very general and does not go into great detail.

This movie is a very powerful representation of the treatment of the Jews both in Poland and Germany and is rich with information keeping you on the edge of your seat throughout the movie. This movie is a must to all students who are either studying or interested in Nazi Germany and the treatment of the Jews. Unfortunately, it contains nudity and sex scenes so it is unsuitable for miners and it is subtitled all the way through.

The father/son relationship of Fences

In the play Fences, the relationship between Troy and his son Cory is complicated. Troy is a man restricted by how he was raised as a boy and Cory is a young man wanting to grow-up and find loving attention from his father. The father/son relationship between Troy and Cory can be defined as a relationship of protectiveness, independence, and envy.

This relationship involves deep protectiveness on the father's part. Troy used to be a baseball player for in the Negro Leagues, but by the time Jackie Robinson made his breakthrough playing on an all white team Troy was too old to play. Cory is recruited for a football scholarship. Troy cares for his son and doesn't want him hurt like Troy was in the world of sports. He knows that Cory may not get the chance to play simply because of his color. Troy doesn't know how to convey how much he cares for Cory so it comes off as envy. In an essay on 187 Fences an article states "…Cory, who has been recruited for a baseball scholarship… that the boy will be hurt as he has been in the world of sports and beside himself with envy he refuses to let the boy accept it." (Oliver1). In the play fences, Troy tells Cory, "The white man ain't gonna let you get nowhere with that foot ball noway. You go on and get your book-learning so you can work yourself up in that A&P or learn how to fix cars or build houses or something, get you a trade. That way you have something can't nobody take away from you." (1.. 6). Even though Troy seems to be stern when he talks to Cory it is partly because he is trying to save his son from getting hurt.

Independence plays a part in Troy and Cory's relationship too. In the play Fences Cory says, "I can't drag papa with me everywhere I go" (.5. 61). Cory's independence is also seen in the words, "I don't want to be Troy Maxson. I want to be me" (.5, 6). Cory didn't get along with and respect his father. Through Cory's eyes, his dad wasn't anything to him, and he didn't want to be anything like Troy. In the 180 New York Times Frank Rich writes, "the younger Maxson is somehow convinced that the dreams of his black generation need not end in the city's mean alleys with the carting of white men's garbage" (Rich 1).

Envy is also involved in the relationship between Troy and Cory. Even though Troy initially doesn't want Cory playing football because he my get hurt emotionally, he feels a sense of envy because his time for sports has passed. Troy used to play for the Negro Leagues, but by the time blacks were making a breakthrough playing on white teams Troy was too old to play. Envy can be seen through Troy, "being constricted by his feelings … ", and having "a mixture of bitter jealousy…" (Oliver 1). In Fences, Troy expresses his ideas towards sports in 157 by saying, " The colored guy got to be twice as good before he get on the team. That's why I don't want you to get all tied up in them sports. Man on the team and what it get him? They got colored on the team and don't use them." The fact that Troy wasn't able to finish his baseball career stays in his mind constantly, and even though he doesn't mean to be jealous of his son he can't overcome the feeling of Cory having a chance that he didn't. "His frustration with his own baseball career in the Negro Leagues affects his relationship with Cory" www.bridgeweb.com/wilson.html.

The father/son relationship in Fences portrays major conflict in the lives of the two men and those around them. From the beginning of the play, certain elements deteriorate their relationship. The conflict seemed to build more of a barrier or "fence" between Troy and Cory. A father being protective of his son, Cory being his own man, and a sense of resentful envy are all key elements that played major roles in their lives together.

Throughout the writings on the Puritans there seem to be many different interpretations of who they were and how true they were to their religious beliefs. In the selection "Were the Puritans 'Puritanical'?" it is interesting to see how Puritan beliefs are extremely two sided. For instance the article talks about how many believe that god created things for necessary use only but it states if that is so then why would there be a pleasurable aspect to things. There is an example that states, "'The wine is from God but the Drunkard is from the Evil'" (Degler, 101). which shows that in one sense the Puritans do believe that pleasure is allowed in life, one should enjoy wine without it being considered a sin. What is not acceptable in the Puritan religion is excess, one is entitled to drink the wine from god but they must not abuse the privilege by drinking more than their share that is when they will be considered sinful. Another example is their beliefs about the manners of dance that were acceptable. One could dance so long as they were not dancing with the opposite sex in a sexual manner. The dress code of the Puritans was determined by ones status and they believed that the people should dress appropriately. Then there is the issue of leisure involving music and art. Basically what this article says is that the Puritans were not a people opposed to having enjoyment in life but they did believe that it had to be done at appropriate times in appropriate ways. There are myths that they did not like music which is not the case at all they just did not believe that church was the right place to enjoy music. It also talks about art and states that there has been evidence of nudity in their art. I find all this to be interesting because most information that is written on the Puritans makes them out to be very strict and religious people who live their life "trying to develop a strong relationship with god through Bible study, prayer, and introspection" as stated in (The American Promise, 80). That is consistent with all the previous knowledge that I have of Puritans. By reading the article by Degler I have come to see a different side of Puritan life. I feel as though they are a people who do value their relationship with god and who also have a strong value for their studies but I now see them as a people who believe that it is okay to enjoy life as long as things are done in moderation and at appropriate times. They value their religion and education before all else but when they finish with their studies and practices it is okay for them to partake in leisurely events. Puritans are also made out to be non affectionate towards their loved ones but again the Degler article shows that if one were to research their poetry they may find that they are very sweet on their families. It is true that the Puritans were a holy people but I do not believe they were as pure as they appear to be. I feel that all religious groups look to have a strong religious and pure image but all humans have natural instincts that come out. These instincts may not be considered to be religiously correct but being human one will eventually act on these instincts no matter how religious they are. In conclusion the Puritans were for the most part a very holy and educated people but I feel that they did have enjoyment in their life but it was not a focal point of their lives therefore many writers chose to leave it out of their writings. What person wants to point out the their imperfections they want to portray themselves as the perfect example of a holy people and that is why there are so many myths regarding their way of life.

Domestic Violence Against Men

Domestic violence is physical or emotional acts between husbands and wives or between other individuals in intimate relationships. Domestic violence may include verbal abuse, denial of access to resources or money, restraint of normal activities or freedom (including isolation from friends and family), sexual coercion or assault, threats to kill or to harm, and physical intimidation or attacks. Domestic violence can result in death of a partner.

Domestic violence against men is now ridiculed and ignored in the same way that domestic violence against women was ignored about 40 years ago. There are as many violent women as men, but there's a lot of money in hating men. Most of the shelters are funded through the government or donations, however, a small portion (if any) of that money rarely find its way to the battered men's shelter. Why? Because the activists against domestic violence towards women are too busy funding their shelters, their conferences and their statements against men.

My brother is a victim of domestic violence, however, when the police arrive to his house, (a call initiated by him) he is unfairly labeled as the sole perpetrator initiating the violence. It is my opinion that society has been warped by the misuse of statistics, advertisements of domestic violence, and their own ignorance. Violence in the home is usually initiated by the woman, not by the man.

Custom writing service can write essays on DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST MEN

Crime statistics do in fact indicate that women are more likely to suffer serious injuries in domestic violence than men are. But aren't such statistics misleading?

Surveys show that abused women are nine times more likely to report abuse then men, but when men are injured by their wives or significant others and do not seek help from law enforcements or doctors, then how can their statistics be correct? Surveys also show that men who murder wives are treated leniently by the "male" criminal justice system. In fact, exactly the opposite is true--men convicted of murdering a spouse are sentenced to three times as many years in jail as convicted women. In addition, women are 10 times more likely to get probation for their crime as men. During the mid 10's a female name Lorena Bobbitt cut off her husbands penis while he was sleeping and was convicted with only a slap on the wrist. I have no doubt that a role reversal in this scene would have been treated differently.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), more than 500 men were killed by their wives and girlfriends in 16, representing about 5 percent of all male homicide victims in the United States.

In this section of my paper, I will cover information concerning why men don't report assaults and why they remain anonymous.

In this section, I will cover different types of violence women use compared to men and why the law seems to lean on the female side.

Finally, I will cover why people see the roles of perpetrator and victims in cases

of spousal violence as being assigned by gender, the woman being the victim and the man being the perpetrator.

Domestic violence by and against both men and women is a serious problem in America, but it is a problem for which both men and women share equal responsibility. Over the past 40 years, activists have justly called abusive men to account for their despicable actions. It's now time to do the same for abusive women.

I have covered topics concerning the meaning of domestic violence, government funding used primarily for women shelters vice male shelters, societies concept of domestic violence against men, misleading statistics, and three topics I will cover in my final research paper.

Please note that this sample paper on DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AGAINST MEN is for your review only. The Underground Economy

A part of the economy that is hidden from the government is called the underground economy. There are many other terms used to describe this type of economy including words such as invisible, unofficial, irregular, informal, hidden and unrecorded. This economy is also called unrecorded, shadow economy or even moonlighting. The underground economy is best known as the black market not only in the United Sates but in other countries as well.

The underground economy can be broken up into three categories. The categories are the illicit, the informal, and the unreported. This type of economy is hidden for varies reasons and in not included in the economic reports. The amount of money that is generated in the underground economy is not unknown but it is estimated and it is believed to be on the rise.

The illicit category can include things such as the production and or distribution of illegal items. The sale of illegal drugs (ex. marijuana, cocaine) is an example. Prostitution can also be considered in the illicit category. It does not matter with whether it is prostitution of ones self or of someone else it is still illicit.

Custom Essays on Underground Economy

The informal category includes the use of illegal labor. Illegal labor can include but is not limited to labor that is paid less than minimum wage. Jobs that are paid for in cash for the purpose to avoid income taxes can also be classified here. A hairdresser that is not licensed but works as one is conducting an informal trade.

The third category is the unreported category. This category includes things such as understating your income on your tax returns. Other examples would include tips earned by cab drivers, hairdressers, waiters and waitress, and hotel workers.

The majority of people have made a black-market transaction at least once. Regardless of what category the action falls into it is illegal. Some common underground activities are babysitting and gardening work. When you pay the children who work on the lawn or when you pay the babysitter in cash the income goes unreported most of the time. As simple as this seems it is illegal. After conducting research it is believed that underground work provides a large part of income to 5 million individuals (in the United States only).

The underground economy has a great impact on economics. Since it is not reported the official economic statistics are not always correct. Some economic reports omit important information making it misleading. The reports may also vary depending on where they gather information. Different sources have different numbers pertaining to the underground economy. The underground economy also affects the official number of unemployed persons. This may hide a share of individuals that actually work and receive wage income in underground transactions. Another major concern is the loss of tax revenue, as the underground activities are not taxed. The gross domestic product (GDP) is also affected since the unreported economy is omitted from the equation.

The underground economic activity is measured by conducting research and by other means. A clue that is pointed out to us by Bruce Bartlett of the National Center of Policy Analysis is the popularity of the $100 bill. He pointed out the fact that one rarely sees consumers pay with a $100 bill. This is a rare thing since 60 percent of the value of all the U.S. currency was $100 bills in 17. It is believed that large bills such as the $100 ones are mainly used in the underground economic transactions.

The underground economy is more common than one would imagine. It has a significant effect on the economic world as well as on individuals. Whether it falls under the illicit, informal or unreported category, it is still illegal.

Please note that this sample paper on Underground Economy is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Shaping Our Nation

Our nation has been shaped and reshaped by several major speeches. These speeches are given from the heart with inspiration, admiration and motivation. Famous speechwriters include Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King.

Abraham Lincoln was the 1th President most noted for his Battle of Gettysburg Address in which he gave on the battlefield. The Battle of Gettysburg considered by most military historians the turning point in the American Civil war. The Battle of Gettysburg was a decisive engagement in that it arrested the Confederates' second and last major invasion of the North, destroyed their offensive strategy, and forced them to fight a defensive war in which the inadequacies of their manufacturing capacity and transportation facilities doomed them to defeat. President Lincoln told people that a nation in full democracy is a great nation. He also reminds us that our "forefather brought forth this new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equally". Lincoln's speech is very powerful in that a "new birth of freedomand that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth. Freedom was at stake during this time and Lincoln reminded us that we are fighting for our liberty and equity for our generation as well as the future generations.

Custom writing service can write essays on shaping our nation

Franklin D. Roosevelt gave a remarkable speech when he asked Congress for a declaration of war on Japan. After being viciously attacked by Japan, Roosevelt felt our freedom was at stake and asked Congress to declare war. Thus resulted in Pearl Harbor. Just hours after the attack, the President, beginning with words that harken back to Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, spoke to a joining session of Congress. By recounting the attack on Pearl Harbor, Roosevelt unified the nation. In Roosevelt's speech he relates to the people of the US as friends and says "our people, our nation, or territory, and our interest". That afternoon, Congress passed Roosevelt's resolution by a nearly unanimous vote. Roosevelt's speech helped Americans understand the nature of the war.

John F. Kennedy's inaugural address has been praised as one of the best public speeches ever. Kennedy, facing domestic and Cold War challenges, said, "In your hands, my fellow citizens, more than mine, will rest the final success or failure of our course." Also Kennedy addressed the need to be a citizen. "Ask not what your country can do for you, but for what you can do for your country." Even though the United States was clear of Pearl Harbor we were not clear of war indefinitely.

Martin Luther King was probably the most noted speaker of his time. MLK was asked to deliver the keynote address in a massive civil rights march on Washington. Noted for his "I have a Dream" theory. MLK breaks down his seven dreams for freedom. The speech was structured like a classic tale of good triumphing over evil. Using Lincoln's words, King began with a discussion of the past "Five score years ago." Then King ended with the future "I have a dream." Few could argue that King's imagery of little black boys and black girls joining hands with little white boys and white girls. Within two months of King's speech, Congress passed a new civil-rights bill into law.

In all four of these speeches, freedom was at stake but not taken. One thing that I find interesting in researching these speeches is the fact that they all build on one another. All of the speeches following Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address have some form of direct cite or reference to the famous speech that started it all. Freedom was at stake but not taken. These speeches helped shaped the nation that we so proudly call home.

World Peace

Today in the world there is no such thing as world peace. All around the world there are many accounts of terrorism, war, and many other sorts of violent behavior. Such acts like the D.C. sniper, or the September 11th attack on America. Just go to prove this point.

On October 10th, 00, the D.C. sniper, allegedly known as John Allen Muhammad began a shooting rampage that lasted nearly three weeks. His first victim was taken on October the 10th, followed by twelve others who were shot and killed or wounded severely. The police involved were on a manhunt for nearly twenty days trying to find the sniper, and but had no evidence against him except for the letters, and bullets that were left behind at the areas of the shooting. The reasons the man was found was because of routine vehicle checks that police were doing in the area because of he shootings, and the tip from a man made after he saw the sniper. He has yet to be prosecuted in court for his crimes against the states, and is still undergoing court proceedings.

On September 11th, 001 members from the group known as the Al Qaeda, hijacked four American passenger airplanes. One of the planes was crashed into the pentagon, killing over a hundred people and wounding almost another hundred people. Two of the other planes were crashed into the World Trade Center buildings, one into each. The buildings collapsed after some time, which resulted in the deaths of thousands of Americans in the buildings, and also the passengers on the airplane. The fourth plane was intended for the White House, but crashed in Shanksville after the passengers on the plane stormed the cockpit and overthrew the terrorists, this caused the plane to crash, since no one could fly the plane.

After the attack on America, the Americans decided to go to war against parts of Afghanistan to fight the Taliban government who had been responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans. The Americans bombed most of the territory that the Taliban held, and sent in ground troops to destroy the complicated networks of tunnels to eliminate any of the Taliban that might still be around in the area. The Americans suffered approximately 0 casualties, while the Taliban's forces were destroyed.

In a Moscow theatre earlier this week, 750 people were taken hostage by a group of Chechen rebels. The rebels were demanding an end to the war in the breakaway republic. The Chechen rebels had the place tied down with explosives at most exits, and themselves as well, to prevent anyone from entering or leaving the building. The Chechen rebels held the citizens hostage for 58 hour before any action was put into motion. Prior to Moscow's Special Forces storming the theatre, The special forces used the ventilation system to induce a knock out gas into the theatre. The aerosol gas compound killed 117 of the hostages, and hospitalized another 184 hostages. The Special Forces killed about 50 of the rebels after the storming of the theatre.

Today, the American army is training their soldiers for street combat, which they are going to pursue in the near future. The military is preparing them because they plan to be invading Iraq for the problems they have been causing. However, the United Nations is postponing the Americans from attacking until they have came to an agreement that America should be allowed to go into that country. However, in the meantime, the military is being trained in mock cities around the country, until they are prepared, and obligated to go into Iraq.

These are the reasons that I believe there is no world peace today. I do not think that there will be world peace for many years to come, based on the actions of the people of their countries, and the governments that represent them. However, with the United Nations in place, it will keep wars from escalating to drastically, thus going to prove that there is some safeness in the world.

My interpretation of this quote is based on the combination of all my past experiences in this world. Yet none of my advances in life have ever been based on certainty. Indeed, my core belief in myself has oft been destroyed by the sting of uncertainty. In this illusion of life - where uncertainty is the only certainty - how can I form opinions based exclusively on certainty? Is an appeal to the real a realistic tool to employ whence all is unreal anyhow?

In finding the one true logic from which one forms opinions, it may be necessary to acknowledge value in illusion. Descarte states that in this dreaming illusory state we have found the "pleasant illusion." I question this why may our "peaceful sleep" in illusion by followed by "hard labour" when we awake? Life is hardly a pleasant illusion. Or is it? My continued suffering and hardships is the certainty from which I have reasoned and hence assented to this opinion of mine.

And does not the thought propounded by Descartes - that one will "toil not in the light, but amid the inextricable darkness of the problems…now raised" by questioning this illusion - help to maintain the existence of illusion? Fear of further hardships encourages one to remain trapped as a "prisoner" of this illusion. Such fear maintains the trap of illusory existence, until one day we transform our opinions.

But how can one form an opinion based on certainty, if everything is inherently uncertain? Descartes argues that it must as least "be admitted that certain other even simpler and more universal things are real" even if ones body parts are imaginary. So what can be found to be real? If the source of the illusion is something inherently certain, being God, then surely the certainty must flow through into the illusion, like the electricity flows through wires and illumines lights.

Write my Essay on 'Reason now leads me to think that I should hold back my assent from opinions which are not completely certain and indubitable' (Descartes in the First Meditation). Is this correct? for me

Descartes assumes that deception is bad, that some "malicious demon of the utmost power and cunning" is deceiving him through illusion. Could not deception be good and also the only means to realising truth for oneself? Finding no certainty, Descartes concludes he can only form "highly probably opinions." This, he thinks, is the only way to find logic in this world, and is more useful than denial.

Finding that one true logic to explain on what grounds one should assent to opinions is, it seems, an illusion in itself.

I found an article on free trade. I would like to tell you more about it. I will start by telling you about what it was about. I will show you some examples on how it could affect us in the U.S. Next I would like to share my option on the article. I will give you some example on how this article may or may not affect my current job. Finally I will tell you what type of international work I've done in the past.

I went online to the Phoenix website and found an article on free trade. It talked about breaking out all over of free trade. It stated that beginning July, European exports will for the first time clear Mexico customs as freely as those coming from the United States and Canada. You might think well they have joined the NAFT but they did not. But in many respects it might as well be a member because they have the same rights. It is called EU-Mexico free trade pact, that both of them agreed to late last year. European exporters now have many benefits-including lower tariffs, investment opportunities in financial services and telecommunications and protection of intellectual property in Mexico that were once reserved for U.S. firms.

The article also said that many other countries are talking to each other to have more free trade. For example it talked about Japan they are talking to South Korea and Singapore about free trade. Australia, New Zealand and a number of other are also thinking about free trades. The United States are also in the loop, a few years ago President Clinton Administration was working on a deal that would cover the entire Western Hemisphere by 005.

Some people say that it would be a good affect to have free trade other don't like the idea. A few years ago Mr. Charlene Barshefsky had hopes to launching a free-trade negotiation with Australia, New Zealand, Chile, and Singapore, but the Treasury Department did not like that idea they said it would threaten future global trade talks. Overall I think free trade will help the U.S. but we need to export a lot more things so we can balances.

This article was very informative on free trade. I learned a lot about what countries are trying to have more free trade. It also mentions that we would have global trade but that's very hard to believe. I don't think that we can ever have all the counties agree on global free trade. I think we will have a lot more counties that are going to be willing to do more free trades but it will not be any time soon. Just look at what happen with the U.N. every one did not agree and we the U.S. still went to war.

With my current job free trade would help a lot it would make the cell phone less expensive for the customers. I work at Cricket Communications, I sale cell phones. Most of the phones that Cricket offers are imported from other counties. I think if we had free trade the phone would cost us a lot less. Right now the phones are at least one to two hundred dollars. I don't deal too much with buying the phone but I know it would save us more money if we had free trade.

The only type of international work I've done is with my dad business. He owes two stores and sets up at the flea markets around here. He goes to Mexico and buys more of his merchandise. He sales all kinds of leather goods, for example boots, belts, hats, and many other things. He goes to Mexico about every other month. Some time he goes to T. J. to pick it up and the other times he goes to Leon, Guanajato to order the boots. I used to go with him once a year but know my bother goes with him. We have to get paper to bring the boots over but most of the time it not hard at all. The last time they went to pick up the boots the border was harder because of all the war and everything that's going on it took him about three hours to past the border they search the whole truck but other than that it was no big deal.

and refuses to change. This short story explains Emily, her mystified

ways and the townsfolks sympathetic curiosity.

The plot of the story is mainly about Miss Emilys attitude about

change. On the first of the year they mailed her a tax notice. February came

and there was no reply. They wrote her a formal letter asking her to call the

sheriffs office at her convenience. A week later the mayor wrote her

herself, offering to call or to send his car for her, and received in reply a

note on paper of an archaic shape, in a thin, flowing calligraphy in faded

ink, to the effect thats he no longer went out at all. The tax notice was

enclosed, without comment. (18). Miss Emily was convinced that she had no

taxes in Jefferson because before the Civil War the South didnt have to pay

taxes and since her father had made a contribution to the town of a generous

amount, Colonel Sartoris, mayor at that time had remitted her taxes, she felt

that that promise or rather gift still stood good. After her fathers death

she went out very little; after her sweetheart went away, people hardly saw

her at all.(10). Miss Emily might have stayed out the public eye after

those two deaths because she was finally alone, something she in her life was

not used to. Emilys father never let her alone and when he died Homer Baron

was a treat she was never allowed to have. Miss Emilys stubborn attitude

definitely came from her fathers strict teachings.

The characters of this story are very briefly mentioned, Miss Emily

and Mr. Homer Barron are the two main characters described. Miss Emily was

described as a short, fat, aged and mysterious women during her later years.

Miss Emily had been through much and had seen many generations grow before

and around her. This brings to reason her strong Confederate beliefs. Homer

Barron; on the other hand was quite the opposite, A Yankee-a big, dark,

ready man, with a big voice and eyes lighter than his face,(11). Homer

described himself as man who couldnt be tied down. This had to be a terrible

opposition for Miss Emily. Towards the end of the story Emily seems to prove

him wrong.

The setting of this passage is highly essential because it defines

Miss Emilys grasp of ante-bellum ways. This story take place throughout the

Reconstruction Era from the late 1800s to the early 100s in Jefferson,

Mississippi. Jefferson was just one of the many Southern towns which was

reformed by Northern reconstruction. The confederate quickly deteriorated

without free labor to aid their farms and plantations. Miss Emily refused to

allow modern change into her desolate life. For example she refused to let

the newer generation fasten metal numbers above her door and attach a mailbox

when Jefferson got free mail service. This reflects Miss Emilys unyielding

persona caused by her fathers treatment when she was young. When Miss

Emilys death occurred the newer Jefferson generations were left without an

ante-bellum perspective.

A Rose for Emily is told through the eyes of the townspeople which

is an example of limited omniscient; a narrator inside the work telling the

story. Faulkner expressed a lot of the residents opinions towards Emily and

her familys history. They mention old lady Wyatt, her great aunt who had

gone completely mad. These opinions seem to come from female members of the

town because they have a nosy approach. At first we were glad Miss Emily

would have an interest, because the ladies all said, Of course a Grierson

would not think seriously of a Northerner, a laborer.(11). The ladies

continue to throw sympathy towards Miss Emily, although she never hears it.

She is slightly aware of the faint whispers that began when her presence

draws near. Gossip and whispers might have been the causes of her ghastly

behavior.

The storys theme is simple, Miss Emily cannot accept the fact that the times

One crisp fall day, after school had started up again for the year, Abigail James decided that she was going to go for a walk on the grounds behind her residence. As she walked she enjoyed listing to the birds chirping and the water flowing it made Abigail feel peaceful. She soon came upon a small waterfall that was breath taking. As she was admiring the scenery she saw a person across the river. She walked closer to the water and noticed that the person that she was seeing was Nicholas Parsons her boyfriend, who attended the same university as her.

There was something really strange about Nicholas; he was wearing an orange coat. Which is strange because he never wears orange he is too conservative for that. Also Abigail's image of him was fuzzy. She shouted hello to him but he didn't reply and a couple of minutes he disappeared. With that Abigail leaves to head for home.

Ms. James returns to her residence and starts some of her many assignments. As she is doing them she can't stop thinking about Nicholas and why he was so rude to her and where he disappeared too. Abigail takes a break from her schoolwork and calls Nicholas; she demands an answer to why he didn't talk to her at the waterfall. Nicholas explains that he was nowhere near the waterfall as a matter of fact he didn't know it existed and besides that he had classes all morning. Mr. Parsons tells Abigail that she probably isn't getting enough sleep and that maybe she should go take a nap because she is seeing things. With that Abigail gets really offended and hangs up on Nick.

The following day Abigail and Nicholas decide that they should go for a hike on the weekend so she can show him the waterfall. When the weekend arrives Abigail and Nicholas pack there bags so they can go on their hike. When they leave Abigail notices that Nicholas is wearing an orange coat, when she questions him about it he says that it's a safety precaution because it would be easier to find him if he were to get lost. During the hike the couple talked about many things. As they were walking Nicholas trips over a small tree. When Abigail goes to help him up he proposes to her, she accepts the proposal and they continue on their hike except for now the conversation is more loving and she is wearing an engagement ring on her finger. Now they start talking about wedding plans and when they want would like to get married and whom they would invite.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on my story

When Abigail and Nicholas get to the waterfall she suggests that they stop there and eat there lunch. Nicholas finishes his lunch first and he decides to explore the water and see if it has fish. As he creeps closer to the edge Abigail warns him to be careful cause she knows that he can't swim. Before she has the words out of her mouth he trips in a small rock and falls right into the water. Abigail jumps up and runs towards the water to save her fianc. She flies into the water but it's to late. Nicholas has already drowned. As she watches he fianc gets pulled down the rived by the rapids she starts to cry historically. When Ms. James fells strong enough she walks back to her school and mournfully tells everyone what happened. Search and rescue recover the body and the only reason they found him was because they could see the orange coat. Abigail is to saddened to look at him she is too depressed to even go to the funeral.

Once a year Abigail returns to that waterfall to mourn the loss of Nicholas Parsons. When she does his ghost, watching her from across the river, always visits her. The image is the same one that she saw that first time that she was there that day by herself and also it is the last image she has of Nicholas before he fell into the water.

A number of years later that waterfall was named Parsons Falls and it is considered extremely bad luck for a couple to get engaged there especially if one of the people are wearing an orange coat as a safety precaution.

It is blatantly unethical to market credit cards to college students. Credit cards are now considered a serious threat to students, even greater than alcohol or sexually transmitted diseases according to sociologist, Robert Manning (qtd.in Hoover ). Students are easy targets for banks. At eighteen, the average age of a college freshman most of them have no previous banking or credit experience. This puts them in a vulnerable position and they easily give in to the lures and incentives offered by these companies. Credit card companies often distribute free T-shirts, Frisbees and long distance minutes to those who apply for credit cards. Reports suggest that debt related problems such as unpaid balances and late payments are higher among those students who sign up simply to receive these complimentary goodies (Gordon 6). Generally, in the case of college students higher their credit limits higher their debt. "During the past decade, students have generated plenty of business for credit-card companies and plenty of debt for themselves" (Hoover ). Banks now consider students to be their new, best customers. Since students generally make the minimum payments which is two or three percent of the balance, they end up paying a very high interest. According to a survey conducted by Nellie Mae, a student- loan provider "nearly one in three students has at least four credit cards, and that one in 10 will graduate with balances exceeding $7,000" (Hoover ). Such consequences have lead scores of colleges to ban the marketing of credit cards. However many large institutions still permit the marketing of credit cards. These institutions are involved in lucrative business partnerships with major banks. The most popular being monopoly contracts, where, exclusive rights are given to a particular bank to market credit cards to students, alumni and employees as well as to issue affinity cards bearing the university's name (Hoover ). Schools acquire millions of dollars through these contracts and "in many cases, the universities that are supposed to be looking out for their students are instead looking at the bottom line" (Hoover ). Thus the welfare of students, which should be paramount, is ignored.

The lifestyle of college students encourages credit abuse. Many students support themselves; they rely on part-time jobs as well as on student loans and financial aid. With mounting bills and job uncertainty more and more students find it difficult to turn down credit cards. A study conducted by sociologist Robert Manning indicates that nearly seventy percent of undergraduates have at least one credit card with a "revolving debt" averaging more than two thousand dollars (qtd. in Gordon 61). Credit cards provide easy access to otherwise unaffordable expenses. Students tend to misuse this flexibility and find themselves knee deep in debt. Banks and credit card companies take full advantage of their ignorance. As Debbie Alford, a student at University Of Central Oklahoma clearly explains, "It's a dangerous situation when the banks know exactly what they are doing, and the students don't have a clue"(qtd. in Hoover 4). Many a times students are forced to drop out of college and work full time in order to repay the enormous debt they have accumulated. In extreme cases it has resulted in bankruptcy and even suicide (Gordon 61). According to a recent study by Elizabeth Warren, a professor at Harvard Law School "bankruptcy filings by Americans under 5 rose 51 percent between 11 and 1" (qtd. in Hoover ). Paying for college, living alone, money management are some of the pressures of university life. This stressful lifestyle encourages students to extend their credit lines making them more susceptible to debt. The recent suicides committed by college students highlight the urgent need to curb the marketing of credit cards on college campuses.

Pride and Prejudice, which generally deals with the topic of marriage, is

especially written for unmarried women who plan to get married or have

an interest in getting married. People besides unmarried women can of

Buy cheap pride and prejudice term paper

course enjoy this book, but to grasp more of the main characters points of

view, unmarried women may be the best audience of this book. Also,

married women can enjoy this book because they can look back on what it was

like when they were single. Generally, I believe this book is for women.

Though the topic of this book is mainly about marriage, it also includes

other topics such as romance and social status. There are several

characters in the book who get married or fall in love with someone. For

example, when Mr. Bingley moved into Netherfield Park, close to where the

Bennets live, the Bennets had a ball. Jane, the oldest daughter in the

Bennet family, finds Mr. Bingley attractive when she sees him at the ball.

Mrs. Bennet is happy to see her daughter with Mr. Bingley since he is

wealthy.

The story begins with Mr. Bingleys arrival at Netherfield Park. Mrs.

Bennet tells her five unmarried daughters (Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and

Lydia) that a rich and handsome man is moving to their neighborhood from

the north of England. Mr. Bingley comes in a carriage with four horses with

his servants. An Assembley is held in the nearby town, and Mr. Bingley brings

his friend, Mr. Darcy. This is when Jane, Elizabeth, Mr. Bingley, and Mr.

Darcys relationship begins. Gradually, Jane gets attracted to Mr. Bingley

and Mr. Darcy finds Elizabeth charming. However, even though Mr. Darcy liked

Elizabeth, she at first did not have a good impression of him. She thought

Mr. Darcy was too high-handed. As the story goes on, Mr. Darcy confesses his

love to Elizabeth, but she refuses it since she has seen how proud he is and

she has heard bad rumors about him. On the other hand, Jane and Mr. Bingleys

love gradually grows. Eventually, Jane gets married to Mr. Bingley and Elizabeth

accepts Mr. Darcys proposal at the second time. The reason why Elizabeth decided

to accept Mr. Darcys proposal was because she realized, when she read the letter

from Mr. Darcy, that his character was completely different from what she had

thought, and she has learned that he has changed. In fact, Mr. Darcy became the

kind of man who Elizabeth liked.

I believe this books characteristic is Jane Austens writing technique, how

she attracts readers into the story of growing relationships. Once I

went into the story, I had to continue reading because I wanted to know what

was going on between Jane and Mr. Bingley, and the other couples. In addition,

another characteristic is the noble society in England in the early 1th century.

Just by reading the book, we can grasp how peoples custom was like back

then.

This book taught me a little about the English culture, other than the

relationship between men and women. For example, I learned that people

used to name where they lived, such as Netherfield Park and Longbourn. I

found that in rural places in England, people used to travel long distances

to visit their neighbors since they did not live so close to each other than we

do now. Also, the use of language was different compared to American

English. People seemed to speak more indirectly compared to the English

spoken nowadays. This book was exciting for me since I wanted to read

further and further to find out what was happening. I recommend it to

women who are interested in romance. It is a little frustrating in some

parts of the book when things dont go as I wanted it to go, but the story ends

with a happy ending so it satisfied me. I think this book isnt too

challenging since it is an abbreviated version from the original version.
