English Review Fight Club

'This is you're life and it's ending one minute at a time.'

The psychological thriller Fight Club directed by David Fincher and starring Edward Norton and Brad Pitt delivers a blunt and powerful message about the human psyche. The director conveys this message using a variety of cinemographic features, which combine to give the audience a knockout film.

The movie opens with scenes of the inside of Jack's/ the narrator's brain (Norton's character remains unnamed throughout the film referring to himself as 'Jack' after reading magazine articles about organs which refer to themselves in the first person as 'Jack'). This more or less sums up what the movie is all about- the psyche of the young male mind. Jack is a 'recall analyst' who suffers from insomnia and gets his kicks out of ordering furniture from a catalogue for his apartment. He seeks refuge from his insomnia by going to support groups (which he doesn't need to go to) e.g. for testicular cancer and lymphoma. Enter Marla Singer (Helen Bonham Carter) she too does not need to go to any of these support groups, although she attends them (even the testicular cancer). He cannot stand her but at the same time loves her. So he takes a break from the support groups. When suddenly he meets someone who will change his life forever- enter Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), a charismatic soap salesman. He is the complete opposite of 'Jack', yet 'Jack' finds him interesting, like the person he dreams to be. Together they start 'Fight Club' a place where people who were 'seeking an identity' came to engage in the physical art of 'fighting'. However 'Fight Club' snowballs into something much bigger and the viewer is left floored with a twisted and brilliant ending.

The acting in this movie was superb Norton's delivery of his lines was excellent. At the beginning of the movie when 'Jack' is searching for a better life Norton sounded quiet, emotionless and depressed, his movements were also very robotic, because of his acting, it really makes you believe he had a dull boring life. Pitt's performance was also very effective, you could say that after he saw Norton's acting he just acted in the exact opposite way e.g. he spoke far more loudly, he moved around freely and he delivered his lines in a cool, calm and relaxed manner. As the only lead female actor in the movie Helen Bonham Carter too did a good job she was very emotional in her performance, this helped emphasise how she was confused by the way 'Jack' treated her, i.e. one minute he loved her, the next he hated her.

The changes in lighting and scenery in the movie were used well to emphasise and parallel the great changes 'Jack's' personality went through, e.g. at the beginning of the film when 'Jack' was a neat, tidy, good law-abiding citizen brighter lighting is used and he lives in a condo. However later in the film when his persona changes as a result of meeting Tyler dark lighting is used around him as it is with Tyler. He also moves into a broken down, ram-shackled, old house. This change in scenery emphasises the lack of order in his new life.

The dialogue of the movie is also top-notch, it shows how much 'Jack's' and Tyler's personalities contrast when they first meet e.g. This conversation

Jack Well, what do you want me to do hit you?

Tyler C'mon do me this one favour.

Jack Why?

Tyler I don't know why. Never been in a fight before. You?

Jack No, but that's a good thing.

For most of the movie Durden says and does strange, inexplicable things like above when he wants 'Jack' to hit him.

The one aspect of the movie, which may not have been completely up to standard, was the pace of the film. Fincher has attempted to keep the audience interested by making the pace of the film quite fast, however at times you may be left confused because you think you have missed something.

With all the aspects of a good movie including knockout performances from the actors, masterful use of scenery and lighting and an original story line this movie packs a powerful punch which will leave you shocked and dazed to the very end.
