The father/son relationship of Fences
In the play Fences, the relationship between Troy and his son Cory is complicated. Troy is a man restricted by how he was raised as a boy and Cory is a young man wanting to grow-up and find loving attention from his father. The father/son relationship between Troy and Cory can be defined as a relationship of protectiveness, independence, and envy.
This relationship involves deep protectiveness on the father's part. Troy used to be a baseball player for in the Negro Leagues, but by the time Jackie Robinson made his breakthrough playing on an all white team Troy was too old to play. Cory is recruited for a football scholarship. Troy cares for his son and doesn't want him hurt like Troy was in the world of sports. He knows that Cory may not get the chance to play simply because of his color. Troy doesn't know how to convey how much he cares for Cory so it comes off as envy.
