His qualities represent what I believe a hero truly is. This man, that I see as my hero, is and always will be my hero. He is my grandpa.

Not a flying creature like superman, but a man that flies directly into my heart with love and compassion. He helps me through the rough times, congratulates me on my successful moments and understands my behaviors in every situation.
Things weren't easy being the poor kid that I was, but I knew grandpa understood my position, because he played the role fifty years before I arrived on earth. Constant storytelling made me think hard on how life was in his time of living. His words, "I walked barefoot to school in the icy winter days" came every time I felt like complaining of being poor. It made me grateful of what I have in my day and age. Being a teen and thinking that life is a struggle in this time period has always been a thought-catcher for grandpa. Serious understanding skills had to ring for him. He just didn't understand how teens these days find it hard, when in his time period there wasn't a t v., microwave or running water in the small town of Black Ankle. Every wrinkle and mark printed on his pale hand showed me that he worked hard for many things in life. Grandpa taught me so much about bravery, hard-work, and managing life by using priorities. When things became rough for my parents financially in life, Grandpa was at the door ready to accept my sister and I in his home to stay until things worked out.
Many things have led me to the belief that Grandpa is the hero in my life. The one person that I can count on in any situation. He can pull me out of sorrow and spark a smile on my face in no time. The guy that fought in the Vietnam War, taught me the value of life and work, and gave me the one quote that I really needed, "Its not what you take when you leave this world, its what you leave behind you when you go". That quote made an impact on me. Grandpa didn't leave the world, as of yet, but he leaves with me the love of our country, the power of wisdom in life, and the consequences of being the hero that he was and is to this day.
