Comparison of fairytales

Focus

I have chosen to compare and contrast the differences in language between two fairytales.

Cinderella an art deco love story was written in 001 by Lynne Roberts and is a modern take on the classic " Cinderella". Cinderella an art deco love story although written recently the accompanying pictures are very 150's chic. Incorporating the glamorous popular style that is at once serious and playful, art deco is like no other, recognised for its style and glamorous structure. It has been incorporated into the modern fairy tale to reflect the issues of modern day Britain. From a young age British children are becoming evermore fashion conscious gone are the days where you can dress your children in what you like they have become more opinionated and materialistic. This is reflected in the book through the art deco style and the fashion conscious fairy godmother.

My other fairytale The fisherman and his wife by Brothers Grimm is a classic and old fairytale written in 180 during the reign of queen Victoria when society was often very mixed and only the very rich were educated. The story is aimed at the lower class families of the time giving a strong message that all the luxury's in the world won't make you any different or any more content with yourself. This motto can be adapted to modern times e.g. what do big lottery winners do with their terrifying amount of wealth? Does it actually make them happy? The answer is always NO! I hope to discover how language has changed over time and why these changes may have occurred.

Similarities

Both of the fairytales are designed to read allowed, to children, and possibly by children, which is why the stories although teaching life lessons are upbeat and use frequent rhyme. "Flounder, flounder in the sea, prithee harken unto me" and "magic, magic work on all get Cinderella to the ball". This rhyme helps to captivate its child audience .In 180 storytelling was virtually the only form of entertainment for a child so the story's are full of lively rhyme. Today rhyme is used for very different reasons, children are increasingly turning to TV or computer games for entertainment instead of sitting down for a nice story for this reason the story must be upbeat enough to compete with the play station.

Both books use no contractions e.g. don't is written as "do not" making the sentence very wordy. This simplifying of text is common in modern children's books as contractions would confuse children learning to read at age four or five in mass educated Britain.

However in 180 no contractions are used as the standard of the English language at the time was very high all written books used formal English and all upper class families spoke very well using no colloquialisms. The contraction don't from do not surfaced around 15 around the war years when life was pretty awful and standards in Britain had fallen.

Typical fairytale beginnings are used in both. Cinderella begins "In a time not too long ago and in a land much like our own, there lived a beautiful girl" which adds the immediate sense of a fantasy story "in a land" meaning not reality. This gives the reader entry into a fantasy world allowing the child to escape reality when reading the fairy tale. It also however emphasises the need to be beautiful using the stereotypical "beautiful girl " as the heroine. The need to be beautiful is becoming an increasing obsession in Britain not only in children but in adults too the book subconsciously shows how important beauty is in 001.On the first page a time adverbial "In a time not too long ago" adds to the Childs placing of the story in time.

The Brothers Grimm fairytale also begins with a time adverbial "there once was a fisherman" which immediately enables the child to place the story in time while also indicating a fantasy story. This typical style beginning has become almost clich being used frequently from 180 to modern day times.

Lexis

There are many visible differences between the lexis in both books, this is due to the development of language from formal middle English used in the180's to modern simple lexis used today in 00.The modern fairytale uses mainly high frequency monosyllabic lexis " he, his, set, had, shall" this is used as the books are aimed at children of around five years of age who would have only recently learnt to read. There is however some low frequency polysyllabic lexis "particularly" and "endearment" which are placed to broaden the Childs vocabulary as today children of four will have a fairly limited low frequency vocabulary.

The old fairytale has many disyllabic lexis "hovel" and "looking" making the book harder to read this was necessary in 180 as at the age of five the few rich enough to be educated were educated to a very high level. This changed after the education act in 1867 when the reform act was passed it vas drafted by William Foster it stated that school boards were elected and that schools could make their own by-laws allowing them to charge fees of if they wanted to let children in free. The older book also has many archaic phrases and words "prithee" "unto" and "harken" these would not be understood today by children or some adults showing how language has changed dramatically over the years.

The modern fairytale uses some almost archaic phrases "frock and finery" these are added as art deco is the theme of the book art deco is associated with fancy clothing and "frock and finery" are typical 15-50 phrases adding to the authenticity of the book and to make it more like an original fairytale.

Syntax

Cinderella an art deco love story is full of large colourful illustrations by David Roberts in pen and ink with hot pressed, heavy weight paper, which is a technique associated with the art deco period adding to the originality and authenticity of the art deco designs and pictures. In creating the characters Robert looked at 150's movie stars, magazine covers and art. The paintings in the background on the walls of the house are based on those by Augustus John a famous art deco artist incorporating everything possible into the art deco theme. Art deco is considered to be one of the most exciting chapters in the history of arts. Conceived in France before the First World War in a period of creative ferment, it spread through Europe. Art deco style is a mixture of cubism, constructivism and futurism, which is why it is still accessible today. These illustrations are closely related to the text, which helps the child with understanding.

However in the old fairytale by Brothers Grimm there are only two pictures which are all black and of no great size. This shows that today visual images are key to children's enjoyment where as ion 180 it was not due to greater descriptive detail and imagination.

There are visible differences in the writing between the two books. The old fairytale has considerably more writing, which is visibly smaller compared to the large writing of the modern. This could be due to the fact that in 180 only the rich were educated and those that were, were educated highly from a young age. After the education act in 1867 the standard of ability at such a young age has fallen, meaning books that are easier to read.

Grammar

In the modern fairy tale there are lots of simple sentences "her name was Greta" and "Greta's father was a kind man" and compound sentences "he could be quite forgetful and could not see anything without his glasses" this is due to the book being aimed at young children who find simple sentences easier to read, yet there are a few compound and complex sentences adding to the interest and helping the child to broaden reading ability.

In the old fairytale the sentences are mainly compound "there was once a fisherman who lived with his wife in a hovel, close to the sea" and complex "the fisherman did not much like the business however he went to the sea, and when he came there, the water looked all yellow and green" This makes the book more complicated to read reflecting the high level of ability of those that were educated.

There are a lot of archaic sentence structures "there was once a fisherman" which would now be there once was a fisherman. "You need not make so many words about the matter would today simply be don't make such a fuss this shows how the English language has simplified over the years.

Conclusion

I can conclude from my findings that both new and old fairytales have many similarities, typical settings such as fantasy starts" In a land not too far away" and rhyme which adds to the excitement of the text making the story appealing to children in both 180 and 001.However there are many differences formed over time in the lexis, the old fairytale is considerably harder due to the fact that education was at a high standard to a select few in 180. The modern lexis is very simple high frequency adding to the books compatibility with modern children of school age. There are also noticeable differences in size of text and length of text per page with the old being considerably longer also reflecting the level of education in 180.

Iran is a country located in the Middle East. The main source

of income for the country is oil, the one object that had greatly

influenced its history. Irans present government is run as an Islamic

Republic. A president, cabinet, judicial branch, and Majilesor or

legislative branch, makes up the governmental positions. A revolution

that overthrew the monarch, which was set in 10, lasted over 15

years. Crane Brintons book, An Anatomy of a Revolution, explains set

of four steps a country experiences when a revolution occurs.

Symptoms, rising fever, crisis, and convalescence are the steps that

occur. The Iranian Revolution followed the four steps in Crane

Brintons theory, symptoms, rising fever, crisis, and convalescence

occurred.

Numerous symptoms led to the crumbling downfall of Reza Shah

Pahlavi, ruler of Iran until 178. One of these symptoms is rising

expectations which can be seen during the 160s and 70s. The rich

Shah cleared the way for the land reform law, enacted in 16. The

land minority had to give up its land to the government, and among

those stripped of land, were the Shiah Muslims. Irans power

structure was radically changed in a program termed the White

Revolution. On January 6, 16, the White Revolution was endorsed by

the nation. By 171, when land distribution ended, about ,500,000

families of the farm population benefited from the reforms. From

160-7 the percentage of owner occupied farmland in Iran rose from

6 to 78 percent. Per capita income rose from $176 in 160 to $,500

in 178. From 170-77 the gross national product was reported to

increase to an annual rate of 7.8% (Iran 86). As a result of this

thriving economy, the income gap rapidly widened. Exclusive homes,

extravagant restaurants, and night clubs and streets loaded with

expensive automobiles served as daily reminders of a growing income

spread. This created a perfect environment for many conflicts to arise

between the classes.

Irans elite class consisted of wealthy land owners,

intelligencia, military leaders, politicians, and diplomats. The Elite

continued to support the monarchy and the Shah. The peasants were

victim of unfulfilled political expectations, surveillance by the

secret police, and the severe social and economic problems that

resulted from modernization. The middle class favored socialism over

capitalism, because capitalism in their view supported the elite, and

does not benefit the lower classes. The middle class was the most

changeable element in the group, because they enjoyed some of the

privileges of the elite, which they would like to protect. At the same

time, they believed that they had been cheated by the elite out of

their share of the industrialization wealth (Orwin 4).

About this time, the middle class, which included students,

technocrats, and modernist professionals, became discontent with

the economy. The key event should have further stabilized the royal

dictatorship, but the increase in oil prices and oil income beginning

in 174 caused extreme inflation. This was due to the investment

strategy followed by the Shah, which led to a spectacular 4% growth

rate in 174. (Cottam 14). And because of the Shahs support structure

which enabled the new rich to benefit from inflation, the government

effort to deal with inflation was aimless. Poor Iranians and Iranians

with a fixed income suffered major losses in real income. Better

standards of living were no longer visible. Thus, the majority of the

Iranian people developed a revolutionary predisposition.

Everybody loves something for free. Now days whenever you hear a new song that you "have to have" there is no longer any need to rush to the nearest record store to purchase the entire CD for one song that you want. For the most part you don't even have to leave your home; you can have that song in a short amount of time by getting on the Internet and downloading it off Napster for free.

In the last year music sales have not been affected as much as the music industry claims it has. There was a 5% decrease in record sales, but research shows that it has more to do with the economy doing poorly than file sharing. According to a survey done by Forrester Research Report (available on the www.usatoday.com website) the users that most frequently download free music on a regular bases make up 6% of all music sales. According to this statistic, downloading music lets the user sample the record, which then may influence them to buy the record. In my opinion as a consumer of music I have had more than one instance where I bought a CD for one song only to be disappointed with the rest of the album. I often now will download a few songs to get a taste of the album, and in most cases will then purchase it if I enjoyed the few. If I were not able to hear more of the album I would then be more leery about purchasing it. Even though billions and billions of songs are downloaded for free daily, people are still buying CDs because they feel it is morally wrong or may want to support the artist. The music business has grown into a huge multi-billion dollar industry. Yet the economy suffers.

According to a recent study by Jupiter Communications, they explain that more than ,00 of Napster users are 45% more likely to increase their music purchasing (ABCNews.com). Napster and its free music sharing capabilities is a key to promoting all the new bands that are just trying to get started. It gets their name out to the public free and easily. How many people would spend fifteen dollars on a CD from a band you've never heard of, but are curious to listen to? For example, a very successful rock band by the name of Weezer put a few songs on Napster and it all took off from there. Record companies were begging for Weezer to come to their label. This goes to show that Napster is a positive program that should not be shut down.

The band Metallica was the very first band to take action against Napster in April 000 when they sued Napster Inc for copyright infringement (MSNBC.com). Again in June Napster was sued, this time by The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), a trade group representing the US recording industry, claiming, "Napster is… enabling and encouraging the illegal copying and distribution of copyrighted music" (Rosen - RIAA.com).

In conclusion, the music industry has not been affected as much as they would like to believe although the future may bring new evidence that changes this conception. The music industry will continue running the same as of now even though there will be websites similar to Napster available. In less than a year of operation, Napster users have grown to over 5 million. Without question it ranks as one of the most powerful and useful computer applications ever, up there with e-mail and instant messaging. Unfortunately, unlike these other applications, Napster was illegal and was forced to shut down.

Beowulf - Hero of Epic Proportions

Beowulf is "the strongest of the Geats -- greater / and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world" (ll.110-111). Even though he is famous for his massive strength, Beowulf has other attributes that are noticeable other than his strength. These attributes, arrogance, bravery, and a strong love for his people are what make Beowulf become such a powerful, epic hero. Beowulf is arrogant. He constantly brags about his supreme strength. The "strongest man alive" lets people know that he is the most powerful person around by saying, "no strength is a match for mine" (l.67). Beowulf does not think that he could ever be destroyed by anything. He obviously never questiones how his fighting ability would be when he was around seventy. Since Beowulf is convinced that God is watching over him, his ego makes him act as if he is invincible, because of the idea that he has a guardian angel. But, as Beowulf gets older, wiser, and fights in more battles he should realize that there was a possibility that he can die. Beowulf also boasts about his many battles, and is proud of himself for winning all of them. One of these triumphs is the battle in the water when he meets up with nine sea monsters which he killeds, and fights with a monster that is digging its jaws into Beowulf's flesh. Beowulf proclaims that " I fought that beast's last battle, / left it floating in the sea" (ll.0-1). This epic tale reads that while Beowulf is in battle with Grendel's mother, all he cares was about the fame he would get for defeating her. Unferth thinks that Beowulf was arrogant, by saying, " You're Beowulf, are you the same / Boastful fool who fought a swimming / Match with Brecca" (ll.-41). Yes, Beowulf is a boastful fool that loves the attention that his strength gives him. A strong man and an arrogant one, Beowulf is also brave. Even after all of the horror stories that he hears about Grendel, he still fights the cursed beast without any hesitation. When he battles with Grendel, he does it without the things that everyone else would use--weapons. This shows that Beowulf is not scared of anything in the world. He also must be brave to fight a sea monster after swimming in the ocean for days. He went straight into battle exhausted, from the strenuous journey across the ocean. The bravery that he possesses, along with an arrogant mentality that no one can defeat him keeps Beowulf from quitting at a time that anyone else would. In addition to being brave, Beowulf thinks of his people all of the time. Even when he was not a member of the clan, he still fought for them. He cares if they are being terrorized or killed, and shows his love by endlessly going into fights, each battle tougher than the one before. Even when he is dying after his battle with the dragon, all that he thinks about is the treasure that his clan would be able to use to their advantage. The leader of the Geats even thanks God for letting him help his people while he lived. He gives them the bravest leader under him in Wiglaf, which was the best gift for his people, since like Beowulf, Wiglaf was brave. To be a real hero, Beowulf needs to have some kind of personality to make him a man of epic proportions. Beowulf is arrogant, but through all of his arrogance, he still has a kind heart, is brave, and cares for his people. A person who upholds these qualities is truly a hero and a great example for all of mankind to look up to. People in this world should also mold their hearts after a person like Beowulf, because even though he is not perfect, he still strives to be the strongest, and has the biggest heart known to Herot, and the world.

Structure and function of Cell Membrane

FLUID MOSAIC MODEL

Contains lipids and proteins. Lipid component referred to as the phospholipid bilayer. Phospholipids form a bilayer when placed in a water environment due to the phospholipid polarity. Phospholipids move freely within their plane of the bilayer resulting in fluidity within the membrane. The layers of the bilayer may have different phospholipid and cholesterol compositions. Proteins can be wholly or partially embedded in the phospholipid bilayer. Some proteins can move slowly through the membrane, others are fixed by attachment to the cytoskeleton. The cell membrane is asymmetrical since molecules such as glycoproteins and glycolipids project towards the outside of the cell. Fluid Mosaic - refers to the fluidity due to the phospholipid movement and the mosaic pattern due to the irregular placing of proteins in the membrane. The membrane is selectively permeable - it controls the entry and exit of molecule. The membrane layer is approx. 8-nm thick. The phospholipids are approx. nm and there is a gap between the two phospholipid layers which is bridged by integral proteins

Buy custom structure of a cell membrane term paper

The bilayer is held together by hydrophobic interactions. The phospholipids cannot move to the other side of the bilayer (transverse movement) as that would mean the hydrophilic head would have to pass through the hydrophilic tail area - this in unlikely.

As temperature decreases the membrane becomes less fluid - less energy therefore less movement of the phospholipids and the phospholipids pack tightly together. The temperature at which the membrane changes from fluid to solid is known as the transitional temperature.

Another lipid is Cholesterol which can account for 50% of lipids in the membrane. Cholesterol enhances membrane fluidity by preventing close packing of the phospholipids. It has hydrophobic and hydrophilic areas which align themselves to the zones within the phospholipid bilayer. It also makes the membrane impermeable to most biological molecules by filling the gaps between the phospholipids.

Proteins

Proteins in the membrane have hydrophilic and hydrophobic zones. Membrane proteins align themselves with the phospholipids based on their polarity. Thus membrane proteins may be wholly or partially embedded in the membrane. Transmembranal proteins bridge the phospholipid bilayer.

Peripheral proteins are not embedded in the membrane but are attached to the surface. Proteins may move slowly within the membrane, however some are attached to the cytoskeleton and cannot move. Protein composition varies with the type of cell. Membrane proteins proteins can act as channels for molecules to pass through. They can act as carriers which pick up, and take molecules through the membrane. They may have an enzymic function. They can also act as junctions linking adjacent cells together. Membrane proteins help stabilise cell structure by attaching the membrane to the cytoskeleton. Another function of Membrane proteins can act as receptors for specific molecules (ie. hormones) and can have a role in cell - cell recognition.

Membranes have several different uses in the cell such as cell interface/boundary separating the living interior of a cell to the non living exterior. Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells have a cell or plasma membrane. Membrane layers also surround eukaryotic organelles.

Keeps areas of different chemical composition apart. It helps to maintain the composition of different areas and Regulates the movement of molecules into and out of the cell and organelles, it also plays are role in cell recognition and communication processes. Membranes act as a barrier controlling the passage of molecules into and out of the cell and organelles.

They are selectively permeable, since not all substances can move through them. Small non-charged molecules, particularly if they are lipid-soluble can move freely through the membrane. Macromolecules and charged ions and molecules cannot freely move through the membrane. The membrane is generally +vely charged outside and -vely charged inside thus -ve ions tend to move out of the cell and +ve ions tend to move into the cell. Movement of molecules across the membrane is used for nutrient and ion uptake and excretion, removal of waste materials, transport of materials between cells, exchange of material between cell and environment.

The types of transport are -

Intracellular transport - into and out of organelles - Eukaryotic cells only - mitochondria, chloroplasts, nucleus, etc. Transcellular Transport - between adjacent cells or layers of cells - ie. intestinal tract epithelial cells.

Cellular Transport - uptake and excretion of material from the cell - eukaryotic and prokaryotic. PASSIVE Transport - molecules move from and area of high concentration to low concentration - no energy input required - unaided or with the help of a specialised protein carrier.

ACTIVE Transport - molecules move from an area of low concentration to high concentration - against the concentration gradient so energy is required - mediated by membrane proteins (pumps).

English Advertising Language Assignment

When looking at the beauty industry Advertisers use language techniques aimed at people's insecurities rather than conveying information to the public

The sole purpose of advertising is to entice and persuade an individual or individuals to buy a certain product. To do this the advertiser needs much creativity and flare.

The role of creativity is to gain entry to consumers' minds and act as a catalyst for the desired thought process and change of opinion or behaviour.¹

Do my essay on Advertising CHEAP !

It is important that this element is present, if the advertising companies wish to compete against other fierce markets of similar opposition and effectively convey their message or sell their products, consequently increasing their business potential and turnover. When considering the beauty industry it is obvious that the majority of advertisements are aimed at the female variety, from teens though to around 50 years old.

Consequently in an attempt to appeal to female audiences advertisers put a lot of emphasis on beauty, family, relationships, and romance. It is here that the companies use manipulative language techniques, which are aimed at people's insecurities, rather than actually conveying information about the product itself. Through my research of beauty magazines it is apparent that this manipulation is achieved through the use of three key methods of language techniques. Thus being the use of Personal Pronouns, Emphasis on emotive vocabulary and extensive use of Comparatives and Superlatives.

Firstly the Advertisement Industry is well known for its use of Personal Pronouns amongst the target audience. By using Pronouns such as your, you, and we, the advertiser creates an emotional bond with the audience, almost as if they were being directly addressed. Take for example the advertisement from the Estee Lauder 'colourful range of Eye makeup' advert "You've never been so touched by colour…" or the advertisement for the Revlon Defining Duo Lipstick "Gives your lips a perfect finish every time"

By referring directly to the audience the customer feels valued. This is because he/she comes under the impression that the company has designed the product specifically with them in mind. This is an effective technique in influencing customer retail and at the same time a manipulative technique used against the buyer. There is no information incorporated in the advert itself to inform the customer of any necessary information that should be at hand.

The second technique that is apparent when considering manipulative language techniques is the emphasis placed on the use of Emotive Vocabulary. Emotive vocabulary appeals to people's senses. It heightens their need for the product by modifying it and associating it with enticing and alluring images.

"New, Pure, velvety and sensuous" derived from the Avon selection of 'moisturising lip treatments' is a perfect example of Emotive Vocabulary used in such a way. Another being the advertisement for the Revlon Spring Collection of eyewear 00 "Flirtatious seductive and Delicate"

Language such as this convinces the buyer to choose this particular product more so over other brand as well as demanding attention and ultimately satisfying the customers needs. Again an example can be seen through the Schwarzkopf Live Hair Dye advert using words such as "Daring, Dynamic and Vibrant"

These examples clearly demonstrate how advertisers aim at people's insecurities rather than providing the audience with any relevant or factual information about the item.

Lastly through the language technique of extensive use of Comparatives and Superlatives Advertisers are able to largely influence the audience's decision in their basic need or desire for such a product.

For example "Skin looks younger and stays younger longer" from the Clinique total turn around visible skin renewer moisturiser advert. This promises the audience a desired result with the intention of the product serving on a more advanced level than others. Again the use of a Superlatives is evident in the advertisement for Fresh Look Cosmetic Contact Lenses "The most beautiful you" This gives the reader the impression that the contact lenses enhance the beauty of oneself to the optimal level. Through extensive use of Comparatives and Superlatives, advertisers provide claims about their products, which guarantee the customer of exclusive advantages hence aiming directly at their insecurities and providing absolutely no essential information about the actual product itself.

Advertisements influence our attitudes, opinions, values and buying habits. Despite the fact that advertising was intended to be a tool used to inform the public about products; it has become a fraudulent device of capitalism due to the deceitfulness of today's advertisers. Advertisements are now used as a means of manipulating individuals about the proper items to buy to become fashionable, popular, and successful or beautiful. Although these goals are not impractical the means by which the media implies that these goals can be reached are by taking irrational actions, this is evident through my study, showing exactly how Advertisers use language, which aim at peoples insecurities rather than conveying information to the public.

Please note that this sample paper on Advertising is for your review only. Founded in 155 by John H. McConnell, Worthington Industries has evolved into an established market leader in value-added steel processing and general metal related businesses. Of recent, Worthington has consistently outperformed its competitors and continues to maintain its dominant position in the steel manufacturing industry. Worthington operates under a long-standing corporate philosophy based on the corporations "Golden Rule." Worthington's' "Golden Rule" philosophy to treat its employees, customers, suppliers, and shareholders in a manner such like it would like to be treated is the foundation to its corporate success. Furthermore, Worthington encourages its employees to join in the corporate philosophy by helping out in the communities where they live and work. Much of Worthington's success can be traced to its management systems, moreover, its enforcement of the "Golden Rule" which results in the corporation's ability to consistently outperform its competitors. The "Golden Rule" philosophy is not only the corner-stone for the company; rather, it simultaneously serves as the company's foundation. By breaking down the categories within the philosophy of the "Golden Rule," a more detailed analysis will result. More importantly, though, it is critical to acknowledge that the simple consideration of the "Golden Rule" philosophy will not suffice towards corporate objectives, rather, a strict implementation of what the "Golden Rule" stands for must be carried forth by management to ensure the results that the "Golden Rule" seeks to accomplish.

The primary corporate goal for Worthington is to earn money for its shareholders, while, at the same time working to increase the value of their investments. The corporate belief is that the best measurement of the accomplishment of its goal is consistent growth in earnings per share. Exhibit 1 indicates that over the past five years, net sales have been exposed to marginal, yet, constant growth. Concurrently, the exhibit indicates that gross margin and operating income have also risen substantially. The corporation financial performance is a clear indicator that Worthington is fulfilling their obligation and commitment to earning money for its shareholder. Money magazine named Worthington Industries as one of the 0 best performing stocks of the past 0 years. The study ranks the stocks based on annual returns on investment and earnings per share. The annual returns on investment are now around 18%, ranking the company 0th in the United States alongside some of the nation's top businesses. Persistence and dedication to ensuring optimal returns on investment for its stakeholders fuels the corporate locomotive anchored by management teams using the "Golden Rule" as a premise for its management system.

Much of the success that Worthington's management system encounters is based on the relationship the management has built over time with its people. The corporate motto or frame of mind is that people are its most important asset. Management believes that people respond to recognition, opportunity for individual growth, and fair compensation. Worthington prides itself on the accomplishments that its employees and management teams have conquered while working together. Needless to say, such accomplishments should be and are openly applauded and acknowledged as the company, its facilities and its people are often honored for the services they provide. In 17, 18, and 00, Worthington Industries was named one of the "100 Best Companies to work for in America," according to Fortune magazine.

Furthermore, for decades Worthington has believed that compensation should and must be directly related to job performance offering incentives and bonuses to those whom posses extraordinary performance on the job. However, in return, Worthington expects its employees to be genuinely concerned and accountable for their actions on the job and provide above average work for an above average pay. The corporation shows genuine commitment to its employees while maintaining that if jobs open up in other divisions within the company, the primary candidates for those vacated positions will be existing personnel. This is a restatement of management's dedication to its people providing internal opportunity to grow. The value of this aspect of the management system is invaluable. By prioritizing the needs and wants of its staff and personnel, management conveys to its people the message that "we care about your well-being." As long as "people" buy into this corporate philosophy, as apparent they do, can the management system operate successfully.

Worthington's philosophy speculates that without the customer and their need for its products and services, it would in essence have nothing. Any business, per se, acknowledges the importance of its customers; however, the steel industry is that much more in need of maintaining its customers for unlike other smaller industries, customers are limited in scope making them that much more valuable. Management's mission is to exert every effort to see that the customer's quality and service requirements are met. Once a commitment is made, Worthington's management makes every effort to fulfill its obligations. The Jacobson & Associates Survey ranks the major steel suppliers in the industry based on customer satisfaction while Worthington Industries' Steel Division consistently ranks at the top of the survey. The corporation ranks first for overall quality while collectively ranking second for overall satisfaction, a byproduct of Worthington's extraordinary management systems.

Suppliers, though an important facet of the "Golden Rule" philosophy, play a much smaller role in the corporation's mission. Worthington's primary request of its suppliers is to deliver the supplies on time and to treat them as they do any other company. The corporation can not operate profitably without its suppliers supplying quality raw materials at a competitive market price. Managements firm and understanding relationship with its suppliers is critical to Worthington's overall success.

The main ingredient to the management system is the organization itself. Worthington considers its organization structure to be flat while its profit sharing plan recognizes the major players on only four basic levels production, administration, professional, and executive. Plant managers enjoy autonomy while operating their facilities as individual profit centers. Worthington organizational structure is such that all segments are divided while responsibility for performance rests on the head of each operation manager. All managers are given the operating latitude to accomplish their responsibilities within corporate goals. Worthington's management system enables individual mangers to make recommendations that are needed for reaching optimal working environment conditions and departmental growth. Departmental segmentation and granted autonomy to management contributes greatly to Worthington's superiority over other competing company's. Organizational structure is critical when addressing issues pertaining to growth and development, needless to say, Worthington's organizational structure is more than adequate and growth and development are astonishing.

The final attributing factor to the successes of Worthington is related to management's ability to communicate within the organization as well at a communal level. Worthington communicates through every possible channel with their customers, employees, shareholders, and community. Worthington practices good citizenship at every level setting them vastly apart from all of its competitors and establishing benchmarking conditions for others to try and mimic. Furthermore, Worthington's professional demeanor and ethical business practices give them a leg up over other competing company's within the industry. Worthington encourages all of its personnel to participate in community affairs as well as other worthwhile community causes. In 001, Worthington was awarded China's Marco Polo Award for their significant role in China's economic development and humanitarian commitment to improving Chinese society by sponsoring experts for humanitarian assignments.

Based on the information provided by the case, it seems that Worthington's management system in doing a great job motivating its constituents in performing at high levels while taking much accountability in how the work is done and how well the corporation is doing financially. Management's philosophy, though very admirable, would not be effective and prosperous if the constituents had not bought in to the idea in the first place. Worthington's philosophy illustrates that for the management system to be successful, it would require that all participants of the philosophy work in unison to achieve a common objective or corporate goal. It is apparent that the management system has worked wonders at Worthington for the past five decades and baring any structural changes to the management system, there is no apparent reason why Worthington can not maintain their competitive edge over its competitors as the industry leader in metal related businesses.

Children are typically associated with innocence, security, and salvation. The Catcher in the Rye, Franny and Zooey, and For Esme With Love and Squalor have more in common than having J.D. Salinger as their author. In each of these works, children are portrayed as a window to happiness, and as an escape from the problems going on in the characters' lives.

In The Catcher in the Rye, the main character is a troubled teen named Holden. He is in a stage of life where he is afraid to move forward into a "phony" world, yet he cannot stay a child forever. He cherishes children, and all he wishes to do is protect them from corruption. Holden remarks on one of the children he interacts with; "She was a very nice, polite little kid. God, I love it when a kid's nice and polite when you tighten their skate for them or something. Most kids are. They really are." (Salinger 11). Holden doesn't like too many things in life, but he loves the innocence of children. Preserving this purity is his only concern, without this he would have nothing.

Holden has a younger sister, Phoebe. Phoebe is quite possibly the most important person in his life, and he cares for her deeply. Holden and Phoebe are very close because they are both on the same level; "I mean if you tell old Phoebe something, she knows exactly what the hell you're talking about." (67). When Holden leaves school and goes back to New York, it is not his parents he goes to visit, it is Phoebe. Also, when Holden is visiting Phoebe and he hears his parents he hides. This is another example of him running from adults and then seeking the refuge of children.

In Franny and Zooey, all the characters seem to have their share of problems. However, everyone finds their share of happiness somewhere. Mrs. Glass has a few children one is having a sort of nervous breakdown, another committed suicide, and the other cannot seem to get over his brother's suicide. Mrs. Glass is happy when she looks aback at how things used to be, when all her children were doing fine; "'You all used to be so sweet and loving to each other it was a joy to see…Just a joy,'" (118). Mrs. Glass's precious children have grown into their own lives and problems, but she still cherishes what remains in her memory of them.

Custom Essays on Catcher in the Rye/Franny and Zooey/For Esme with Love and Squalor

Zooey, the middle child, is torn between the suicide of his older brother and the breakdown of his younger sister. He, like his mother, looks back at himself and his siblings when they were younger. Unlike Holden Caulfield however, he knows all too well that in time everyone matures. At one point, Zooey is talking to his sister Franny when he looks out the window. Across the street is a school, and he watches a youthful girl play with her puppy and tells Franny; "'…there are nice things in the world and I mean nice things. We're all such morons to get so sidetracked…'" (15). Like Holden Caulfield, the characters in Franny and Zooey also use children as an escape.

The entire plot of J.D. Salinger's short story For Esm With Love and Squalor is a worn soldier meeting a young girl and becoming a rejuvenated person. The soldier goes into a coffee shop, and comes across a girl who is about fourteen years old, and her little brother. The soldier has a conversation with this girl, Esm, and finds that she is quite mature for her age. She keeps her younger in line, and scolds him for being foolish. This is ironic because she is young herself, and her parents should be reprimanding her. The soldier particularly enjoys talking with Esm, and is amazed [and in a way amused] by her sophisticated manner. After going home, the former insomnia of the soldier was cured, and he was able to sleep peacefully for the first time in a long while. Esm makes the soldier remember that all is not lost, and there are still good things to live for. The stress of fighting in a war and watching your comrades be slaughtered is a trying experience. The soldier's spirit was slowly crushed by the war, and the lonely life that being in the military brings; "This unexpected demonstration of unadulterated affection redeems the sergeant from his private hell and allows him to go to sleep." (Warren 77 78) Meeting someone like Esm is just what the soldier needs in order to recuperate. Having a philosophical conversation with a young girl who has been alive about 1/rd of the time he has, makes the soldier become interested in life once again.

When J.D. Salinger's literary characters interact with children, it is almost like for a short time they view the world through eyes that don't assume or hate; the pure chaste eyes that could only be of a child. This reviving experience makes them see life in a way that they had once forgotten. In each of these three works, J.D. Salinger praised children as the redemption song of the world, and a small escape from a tense, over-analyzed, tired world.

In William Shakespeares King Lear, betrayal is a common event that leads to the downfall of some of the characters. In todays society, there are two main attitudes that are generally taken towards these fallen individuals or unaccommodated men. The first attitude is more of a pessimistic, judgmental attitude. This attitude puts the majority of the blame on the individuals themselves. The individuals are portrayed as being responsible either due to ignorance or laziness, and it is thought that the individuals got themselves into their deprived situation and they can also find their way out. The second view is more optimistic and is usually more merciful and accepting. People taking this stance generally would take pity on the individuals thinking that their unfortunate situation was due to a simple case of bad luck, or that these individuals were taken advantage of or betrayed by others ultimately leaving them accommodated. In King Lear, the characters Lear, Gloucester, and Edgar were all betrayed by family members leading to their unaccommodated lives. Once again you can take the pessimistic, judgmental attitude or the optimistic, merciful attitude. When applied to the characters in King Lear, I choose to take the optimistic, merciful attitude.

King Lear was betrayed by his two daughters Goneril and Regan. King Lear wanted to distribute his land according to the amount of love that this daughters had for him. Granted this was an illogical method, his intentions were not to destruct the family and himself. He was also very harsh to Cordelia, but the ultimate event that took place to leave him unaccommodated was the betrayal by Goneril and Regan. Lear put his trust in the wrong people, and it ended up placing him in a horrible situation. Now Lear did not make the smartest decisions, but what wrong did he commit in trusting his two daughters who professed their love for him to provide for his basic needs. How sharper than a serpents tooth it is to have a thankless child. ( I, iv,57). Lear voices his frustration with not being able to trust his own family members.

Gloucesters downfall was also a case of betrayal. His illegitimate son, Edmond, betrayed him into thinking that Edgar, his legitimate son, was plotting against him. One might say that Gloucester was ignorant in believing Edmond, and that he was illogical in not confronting Edgar. If one was plotting to kill his father, why would anything be revealed by confrontation. Obviously Gloucester would assume that Edgar was lying either way, especially since his life was on the line. The fact that Edgar was not trying to defend himself probably did not really help in proving his innocence either. Nevertheless, Gloucester was trying to protect his life and was trusting in something that ended up being an absurd lie. But once again what wrong did he commit by trying to preserve his life, and believing in a story that seemed to be too serious to just be made up. I have no way and therefore I want no eyes. I stumbled when I saw. ( IV, i, 17.) Gloucester expresses his disappointment with himself and in his betrayer that caused him to stumble into his unaccommodated life.

Edgar was also betrayed by Edmond. He was, much like his father, trusting into the lie that Edmond fed him. Now one might ask, why did Edgar not go to confront his father about these issues? Would it have been smart for Edgar to go to his father when he was told that his father wanted to kill him? That also could have been throwing himself into the fire. So because, once again, Edmonds lie was so extreme Edgar chose for the method to preserve his life and hid out as the unaccommodated man, Tom OBedlam. What wrong did Edgar commit in this situation? He was simply trying to preserve his life. He made a sacrifice of switching lifestyles to do so. And worse I may be yet. The worst is not so long as we say this is the worst. (IV, i,17.) Edgar still continued to have a slightly optimistic attitude through all of this. He knows that he could be worse off than he already is.

Custom Essays on The Unaccommodated Man in King Lear

Sure these characters did not make the best choices that they could have made in the situations that they were in, but that is very easy for us to see as outsiders. They did not see all of the different angles that we can see. Who are we to judge them and say that they were ignorant or illogical and therefore brought this upon themselves? I am a man more sinned against than sinning. (III, ii, 11.) Lear is right in claiming his lack of responsibility for his unaccommodation. We are all human and we all make mistakes. Should we not be able to trust each other and especially our own family members? Is man no more than this? (III, iv, 78.) I agree with Lear in his questioning.

It is sad to think that we cannot trust our own family members to look out for us in a world that is cruel enough as it is. I cannot see any reason to blame men for ignorance and illogical thinking, when we are all guilty of such crimes. I would think that it would be more ethical to hold people accountable for being trustworthy and honest and not out to destroy.

Alberto Rios delves back in time and his childhood when writing the short story "The Secret Lion." From the beginning to the end this author reaches out to touch each adult reader, pulling out memories that have been buried for years. Not a deep, dark things hidden for some obscure reason, just the way life was as a child, and the changes that took place when the child inside each of us started to change into the adult we became.

Told from Rios' experience as a young person, this is an intimate glimpse given into the author's mind as well as some secrets that were held closely for many years being shared with his readers. Some may find this to be a somber short story but others will be delighted to find not only parts of themselves, but the thoughts and ideas they held (and often still do) toward those in positions of authority never to really trust those that have the knowledge, it will not be given freely or honestly.

If there were anything negative to be said about this effort it would be the title and some of the symbolism used. "The Secret Lion" is not just a title, but it certainly describes what takes place with most people as they start into their teenage years. It is simply that confusion could develop in some minds about what the "Lion" actually is, a difficulty that can be overcome if a person were to consider what is meant by "… roaring, roaring that way the biggest things do." We all know what a lion sounds and looks like (consider the lion roaring at the opening of many movies) but there is no actual lion in this case, only the one that existed for Rios, and the one he wants each of his readers to see and hear. There are things used that are both actual objects as well as symbols, some stated as symbolism, some just referred to but allowing you to draw your own conclusions. There also may be a little confusion with the method used in relating the sequence of events, first a young man in the tale is twelve years old; later he is relating something that took place when he was about five. None of these things are problems that cannot be handled if the story is taken as a whole, not something in bits and pieces.

Write my Essay on Discovering Adult Truths cheap

As a whole these two separate times of life become tied into one continuous line when considering what took place at each period of the development. In this case the story is telling what is often discovered in high school, that you cannot always ask the meaning of a word "… you got it trouble for saying it." Instead, the characters did just what many adults have done starting at that time of life, not ask about the word or other things. No matter that the characters in "The Secret Lion" are boys, girls had the same stages and felt much the same things when making the transition into adulthood that has been told.

When put into chronological sequence, Rios (the boy of the story) goes with his friend to explore what, to boys of five, appear to be mountains. The start of the day is idyllic and the adventure is just that until reality is encountered. What seemed to be a bit of heavenly green put down in Arizona turns out to be a golf course and the boys will continue from this point, each time replacing a myth or dream with a fact. Each time a layer is peeled from the ideals of the child, inside will be found something a little less exciting and cold.

A certain amount of symbolism is used by Alberto Rios in painting this picture for us to see. Secret signs and symbols were written in the sand, the intention was to have the water wash it into the sea. No matter what would happen the young boys wanted to be a part of the world. Those same secret signs were used to mark the place used to hide a metal ball that had been found, an object so perfect in its shape that there was no desire to share, only hold on to the prize. This orb was buried, the spot marked but the so-special thing was never found again and it really was not wanted. After all, who wants to relocate that perfect thing and chance it might be taken away? This was the dilemma faced by boys of twelve who had the experience of losing "heaven" at the age of five.

"The Secret Lion" does remind all of what it was like to be a child with the fantasies and dreams. It also takes the reader back to that fantastic/terrible period of life when the teenage years approached. Boys were no longer boys but wanted to stay that way. Girls were not girls, they were young ladies or wanted to be that way. And for male and female alike were those exciting and mindless things known as hormones that raced through the body. Each time the heart beat a new page in the book of life was turned, and as the world was exposed it often was found that what was being seen was not what was desired.

Mr. Rios does an admirable job of showing how tumultuous life was for a boy as he grew, and explains graphically the way we all felt when passing through this phase of our lives. If the reader will carefully examine what is being said I feel they will once more see through the eyes of a child and young teen. Once the memories are allowed to flow back I feel "The Secret Lion" will be one of the short stories that will be read and reread, each time putting a bit of youth into our lives.

What makes a soccer coach good?

Purpose to describe the things a coach does to make him a good coach.

Audience coaches, or people who are thinking about becoming a coach.

Help with essay on what makes a good soccer coach

In the past I have had many soccer coaches.Sme had qualities I believe to be good and some not so good. Every person has there own perception on what makes a soccer coach good. My perception is, they have good organization skills, can form positive relationships with the team, parents and other teams, and has skills advanced enough to keep us learning and improving.

Having a soccer coach who is well organized has many benefits to the team. A coach who is prepared in advance for a practice shows dedication. Coming to practice with drills in mind, and all the equipment up to date and in good shape. This will improve our skills because we wont waste our time waiting around for him. There fore time management is a great key to being organized. Taking time out of their life to make us a better team. They do a lot for you that u might not see; they work around their family, work and other events in their life. By doing this for a team shows you're committed to being a coach and that you're not going to waste any time. Coaches normally have practice days planned in advance so that everyone will make time for the practices. For instance if the coach plans tournaments, trips or practices in advance they will know for sure if the whole team will be there or so the players can make time in there life. Organization takes lot of time and effort but in the end it makes a well-developed coach.

As a coach they should be able to form different types of relationships. Not only relationships with players but with parents and other teams. As a soccer player I think having a good relationship with your coach is almost a must. Having a positive relationship with the players makes you feel comfortable to approach them about anything because you have formed a trusting relationship. When you feel comfortable around each other it makes it easier for them to give you constructive critisum. If you know each other well he will know how to approach you with his comments. Example on how u played in the last game, how you are improving or not, what u can do better, what you really need to focus on. When the coach forms a relationship with the parents they prove they are trust worthy and show the desire to be a coach. By parents and coaches having a good communication lets them know what is going on with change in practices and up coming events. Also when the coach has a good relationship with the parents it can benefit him by the parents volunteering to help him out with practices, planning events, or being a manager. As well it gives the team a good look when the coach forms relationships with other coaches and teams. It shows respect for each other and you normally end up playing a fair game. Coaches that don't get along well can put a lot of stress on the team to win and that's not what soccer is all about. Being competeive for the right reasons is natural, but not for proving something to the other coach. Communication is key to a positive relationship and that's what u need in your coach.

Naturally to be a good coach you would need to know a variety of skills. Having a back ground as a coach, ball skills and how to use your mind are just a few of the more important skills a coach would need. Having a coach who has been on in pervious years they would be learning new and better skills to be a coach all the time. They would do this by seeing the kids advancing their skills, and developing mentally as a team. Just having amazing ball skills doesn't mean you know how to use them on the field during a game. A coach who has never played would have a hard time understanding everything about soccer, but for those who have played would have a fairly good understanding of the game. If you play at a high level of soccer you expect you coach to be able to improve your skills or teach you new ones. Once you have achieved certain skills there is always more to be added. You can never stop learning and either can your coach. Most of the time people don't think that being smart mentally has a lot to do with the game. When your coach teaches you how to "read" the game you a much better player. For example knowing where to place the ball when u receive it (thinking a head) or thinking of where the ball might go, this will help you become a better defender. A coach who is always making you think mentally is a great coach to have. Your skills as a soccer player are always being improved by other players, coaches and soccer clinics. This goes for coaches as well, there are tons of soccer clinics around for them to improve their skills. They help with new drills, skills and coaching tips. Having a coach with desire and dedication to learn new things is a major plus that doesn't only benefit him but you as well. You can never stop learning, all it takes is desire and a coach with as much desire as you; this is what you need to succeed.

Over all the traits that make up a good soccer coach contribute to the player I am today.

In November 16, the United States discovered an installation of Intermediate Range Ballistic Missiles (IRBMs) on the island of Cuba, just 0 miles from the coast of Florida. The Soviet Union, who hitherto was strategically inferior to the United States in nuclear capability, donated these missiles to Cuba. Moscow sought diplomatic goals aimed at weakening the US's continued policy of containment of communism, including a withdrawal of US forces from Berlin, a guarantee that the US would not invade Cuba, and a removal of US missiles from Turkey. The instalment of IRBMs in Cuba strengthened Moscow's bargaining power in negotiations with the United States. For the first time, the United States were threatened by a military capable of reaching far inside their borders with a potential capability for mass destruction. Unlike previous ground force encounters through history, this threat endangered their major political institutions, civilian population centres, and industrial structures. US president Kennedy was determined that the Soviet Union would not back him into a corner, and was left with no other option than to stand firm against the Soviet's demands. In a time of mass public hysteria, there was no significant opposition to this stance. Kennedy could not compromise, at all costs, even if this meant risking a third world war.

Following the 15 Cuban revolution, where the guerrilla forces led by Fidel Castro overthrew the US-backed dictator Batista in Cuba, the United States showed determination to re-establish a capitalist-led regime. In a time of bipolar international politics, it was a degradation to capitalist dignity that there should be a communist regime just 0 miles from the coast of the world's strongest capitalist power. Castro did not initially declared any alignment with Moscow. Indeed in April 15, the Cuban leader even visited the United States to discuss financial aid for an their industrialization program . However the United States saw communism in any form as an enemy. In the time leading up to the Cuban Missile Crisis, the CIA repeatedly endeavoured to displace Castro from power.

The attempts to overthrow Castro finally came to a head when, in blah 1blah, a CIA-backed force of 1500 men, mainly Cuban exiles, landed at the Bay of Pigs, undertaking to storm into Havana and drive out Castro's regime. Within three days Castro's army easily repelled this invasion. The CIA had tried to disguise returning planes landing in Florida as that of defected Cuban air force fighters, but without difficulty the press identified them as CIA planes. This invasion was clear confirmation of the US intent to overthrow Castro. Documents have since been released proving further attempts to undermine Castro, including failed assassination attempts , confirming the determination of the US to dispose of the leader. In 1XX, he formally aligned Cuba with Soviet communism

When Cuba finally declared its alliance with the USSR in 1XX, this now gave the Soviets the perfect justification for using their comrades as a base for nuclear missiles.

The

If we are to understand why the United States were prepared to risk a third World War, we must first understand the significance of the threat they posed. Until the missiles were installed in Cuba, the United States clearly had the upper hand in terms of the strategic positioning of nuclear weapons of mass destruction. Before 161, 5 failed US attempts at launching ballistic missiles and one failed attempt at launching a satellite into space, had led to the media publicly announcing that the United States were falling back in the nuclear arms race. With the impending presidential election, Democratic candidate exploited the Republican failure to prevent Soviet superiority in the run up to the polls. However in 161, US spokesmen publicly announced their nuclear supremacy over the Soviets. Not only did they have an estimated 17 times more nuclear power than the Soviet Union , but they also had nuclear missile bases in Turkey, Italy, and the Federal Republic of Germany, all with their missiles pointed at the Soviet Union. The Soviets did not have the long-range nuclear capabilities of the United States, and so the oceans served as a natural protective shield. The strategic positioning of missiles in Cuba strengthened the Moscow's bargaining power in negotiations with the United States.

The weapons alone were enough to create mass hysteria, but the fact that the US discovered them before the Soviet Union or Cuba declared their existence added greatly to suspicion concerning Moscow's motives. Khruschev and Castro intended to publicly announce the existence of the missiles in November, after the United States congressional elections, but the fact that the United States had failed to prevent their instalment at the outset, further undermined American national security, pressurising the President to remain firm in his response. While it was officially declared that the missiles were placed in Cuba exclusively to prevent further invasions, few have since argued that there were no further underlying Soviet motives. Until now, the Soviet Union was clearly in no position to make political demands to a formidably stronger United States. With missiles now in a position to cause severe devastation to America, this now put the Soviet Union in good standing to negotiate over other issues.

Who are the Countries national heros and heroines?

Buy Cuba term paper

Every Country has a hero some more famous than others. Cuba's most famous hero is Fidel Castro. He has been the leader of Cuba since 15 when he seized power. He Has done many great things for Cuba. In 160 he raised the minimum level of education and with that the literacy rate rose form 76% to 6%. Fidel allowed medical treatment free to all the citizens of Cuba. In 178 he set health care and work safety laws into place. He makes sure that every family has a roof over their heads, which means 80% of all families live in rent free apartments.

Ernesto "Che" Guevara was a hero of Cuba, even though he wasn't born there. He was born in Argentina. He studied French and English. He became a very talented writer. He came to Cuba by way of a meeting with Fidel Castro in Mexico, and joined the Cuban revolution. After the revolution Che, who was now, colonel Ernesto Che Guevara was put in charge of the fort ola Cabana. He earned Citizenship in 15 and became president of the Institute of National Agricultural Reform and of the National Bank of Cuba. In October of 165, Che left Cuba to assist other Latin American countries in their revolutions. Che died on October , 167.

Jose Marti is an influential writer that was born and raised in Cuba. Due to the many troubles that Jose was involved in he was deported to Spain and was not allowed to hold residence in Cuba. He revisited Cuba many times under a false name. Some of his most influential works were "El Diablo Cojuelo" and "La Patria Libre." Which were a publishing of an underground periodical. While exiled in Spain he wrote "El Presidio de Cuba." While in New York he worked for many publishers and papers such as the New York Sun. Jose lived in New York until he passed May 1, 185.

What is the history of the relationships between this country and the U.S.?

The united states and the country of Cuba do not have a good relationship. On the other hand the United States and Cubans do. The United states has an open door policy with Cubans. Which means that and Cuban that makes it to United States soil can stay. This is unique to the Cubans. The united states does not have a policy like this with any other country. There are many factors that add up to the poor relationship between the United States and Cuba.

The first started at the Bay of Pigs. When the United States invaded Cuba over the Soviet Union and Cuba having a pact. The next crisis was when the Soviet Union convinced Cuba to let them plant nuclear missiles on Cuban soil. The United States tried to interfere because they were not at good terms with the Soviet Union. This Problem is still going on today between the United States and Cuba. There is no sign if it will ever be resolved.

What is the main attitude towards the following Gambling? Drinking? Divorce? Extra-marital relations? Plural marriages?

Cuba is a Catholic society and the strongly believe in those beliefs. When it comes to divorce, extra-marital relations, and plural marriages, Cubans strongly disapprove. It is viewed as unheard of. In the Catholic religion it is a disappointment to gamble and drink your money away. With the income that a Cuban family receives, it is barely enough to support a family, let alone gamble and drink. Most Cuban Families live with there extended family. If you are having an extra-marital relation you will most likely be looked down upon. Since Cuba is a family oriented country/religion, this sort of thing is not common as say here in the United States, where you hear of people being unfaithful quite often. This all boils down to culture and religion.

Is military training compulsory?

The Cuban military is a very strong force, with Cuba being a in communist state. There are many branches in this military, seven to be exact. There is the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) which also includes the Revolutionary Navy (MGR), Air and Air Defense Force (DAAFAR) and the Youth Labor Army (EJT). They also have a Border Guard (TGF) and that is controlled by the interior Ministry.

The Military age in Cuba is seventeen years old and this goes for both men and women. Every year 80,771 males reach the age of military and 76,81 females. But since 1 the military aid was almost completely cutoff from Moscow, who supplied Cuba with most of their military needs. Since 1 the military has declined from what it used to be.

How many people prominent in the host country's affairs (politics, athletics, religion, the arts, ect.)can you name?

There are many people who are well known from Cuba. The first and probably the most known is Fidel Castro. Who is as I said before the president of Cuba. Then there is Jose Marti, who was a famous writer. Alicia Alonso is a ballerina. She has done many things in the arts/ballet department. She founded Alicia Alonso Ballet, which was the first ever professional ballet company in Cuba. Silvio Rodriguez was one of the voices of the "Nueva Trova" movement. His songs display poetry and deep criticism for Cuba. His CD titled Rodriguez won a golden record in 15.
