Industrial design

In 10 a team of New Zealand architects had the chance of designing the Museum of New Zealand. Jassmax the winning team embarked on this architect adventure. Pete Bossley being the main architect had the chance of designing one of, if not the most significant buildings in New Zealand of the century. For it was to be designed for the people of New Zealand. A building that was representational of New Zealanders, to give an identity through the use of architecture. A monument that resembled the bicultural and diverse range of people that occupy the land of New Zealand.

In my essay I will be discussing the changes in the way that society views the museum in today's times and discussing the comparisons to that of the 1th century museums. Also looking at the physical change in appearance and the function of a museum in the modern world of today. Comparing Te Papa to the likes of the Poimdou Centre in Paris and the early Louver.

The overall design of Te Papa is trying to represent a nation. It is trying to represent the notion of a "bicultural" country. This is similar to the functions of museums in the 1th century. The New Zealand government and designers are using the museum as a tool to create an icon for the people of the land. Te Papa will "powerfully express the total culture of New Zealand and present the 'bicultural nature of the country, recognizing the mana and significants of each of the two mainstreams of tradition and culture heritage, and provide the means for each to contribute to a statement of the nation's identity"(Bossley 18, pg).

Help with essay on industrial design

. Looking at some of the ways in which Pete Boss ley has gone about creating this 'bicultural' museum. Through the way in which the building has been positioned on the waterfront has symbolic attributes to both the Maori and the European for both used this land to launch boats/waka here. So here we could say that the very placement of the building has great significants to the two cultures. The Marae has been specifically placed in accordance to traditions of other Maori that are in New Zealand today. "The Maori exhibition area and marae were orientated overlooking the sea towards the rising sun and the direction of most openness, with respects to the siting traditions frequently followed in location of the iwi marae throughout New Zealand"(Bossley 18, p.8) The pakeha exhibitions have been placed facing the city. Laid out in an ordered fashion that is similar to the streets of a normal European city. The way in which there is two cultures on display in the museum is a rather big difference to that of the Louver in Paris, but it's bigger meaning of the building itself in the way that it's purpose is to create a national identity is very similar. "No building type can match the museum for symbolic or architectural importance. France's revolutionaries for instance, commonly referred to the Louvre as an institution dedicated to the glory of the nation"(Davis, p.14).

The Museum of New Zealand (Te Papa) has been designed to accommodate for the Contemporary society that we live in today. People don't want to only have a place were historical artefacts are preserved, but something far more interactive and invigorating. The public wants to have an experience. To be almost consumed by the journey through the contemporary museum. With the massive viewing of TV, the extreme amount of information via computer has forever changed the public of today. It's pushed boundaries to limits and this I feel has reflected onto the public in a monumental way. These influences are why I think that the public of today has such a higher expectation of not only a trip to a museum but of all facets of life. "The information era has drastically changed the ideologies of scientists and the common domain"(Crofton, 10 p.). Te Papa is a place for not only precious artefacts but a place were you can go and source intellectual information and at the same time be surrounded by history. "The New Building was to house four major galleries, an active marae, an auditorium for 50 people, classrooms, resource centres, conservation areas, and a myriad of spaces to house subsidiary functions"(Bossley, 18 p.) Te Papa has become a place for pleasure and relaxation by providing the people with cafes and lounges to sit and enjoy a quiet coffee and chat to their peers. Creating a comfortable space to be in. They have created an atmosphere where no longer do you go to the museum to only admire the extravagant pieces of artwork, but to have a total experience of the museum itself. This is a contradiction to the early traditions of the Louvre. "The Early Louvre was committed to accessibility and education, not to the decoration, not to preserving the "aura" of either the crown or art itself"(Davis, 10, p.16). But when comparing Te Papa to the Pompidou Centre (170s) Designed by Piano and Rogers/Richard Rogers partnership the ideas are in very close proximity. As the Pompidou was a 'new' type of building in that it catered for the contemporary public of it's time "The basement level featured the centre de Cretion Inustrille, devoted to displays of architecture and design. Cinemas, restaurants, and cafes appeared throughout the building, and nearby in an adjacent wing, a centre for new music opened, directed by the famous conductor Pierre Boulez. In no sense was a visit to the Pompidou Centre comparable to attendance of any conventional museum"(Davis, 10, p.8). Here we can see the difference in changes in the way that the museum functions to the traditions like that of the Louvre.

The architecture itself I feel has failed to recognize aspects of the Maori or tried to suggest the traditional carvings and marks too subtly. Here Bossely explains "rather than a seemingly carved addition. We also intended that such reference would be within the larger language of the building, rather than a potential patronizing enlargement of traditional-looking forms"(Bish, 18, p.18). Viewing it from the front as most people do for the back is obscured, this vision of viewing it as a whole is lost. On the other hand the European influence is rather distinct. With the comparison of the spandal art work, the geometric flat plains of colour to modernists such as Gerrit Reitfeild and Pete Mondrian. Almost the entire front of the building is geometric in its lines and form. There is no evidence of Maori traditional carvings, lines, curves or symbols that even suggests they have attempted to incorporate the culture of the Maori into the architecture of the building.

So to conclude my essay I feel that Te Papa is a product of its contemporary diverse culture. The public has also moulded its function. It is no longer like that of the traditional museums of the 1th century in appearance but is still a building that holds a national sense of pride. The function to the people of New Zealand is much more than that of just being a Museum to store artefacts. It's an experience of a culture that is alive at this very moment.

Hazards of Mobile Cell Phone Radiation

In 14, there were 16 million cell phone users in the U.S. alone. As of July 00, there were more than 150 million in the U.S, and over 750 million worldwide. The word radiation is often thought of as referring to the emanations from radioactive materials and X-rays. However, when scientists use the word radiation, they are usually referring to the electromagnetic radiation (EMR). Electromagnetic radiation consists of waves of electric and magnetic energy moving together and can be transmitted from sources such as cell phones, television transmissions, light from the sun, as well as X-ray machines.

Two types of electromagnetic radiation are ionizing and non-ionizing. Ionizing radiation contains enough electromagnetic energy to strip atoms and molecules from the tissue and alters chemical reactions in the body. X-rays are a form of ionizing radiation. We know they cause radiation, which is why we wear the lead vest when X-rays are taken of our bodies. Non Ionizing radiation is typically safe; therefore, humans take advantage of its properties. The concern of non ionizing radiation is that it could have long-term effect. It causes some heating effect, but usually not enough to cause any long-term damage to the tissue. Microwave radiation, infrared light, and visible light are forms of non ionizing radiation. Radio-Frequency (RF) radiation is a component of non ionizing radiation. Cell phones emit RF radiation from the movement of electrical charges in the antenna. Radio-frequency radiation has the ability to heat human tissue, especially when exposed in high levels. Damage to tissue can be caused by exposure to RF radiation because the body is not equipped to dissipate excessive amounts of heat. The eyes are particularly vulnerable due to the lack of blood flow in that area.

Reported diseases and disorders associated with RF radiation are Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Brain Cancer, Brain Tumors, Epilepsy, Asthma, Leukemia, and Diabetes. When it comes to the potential risks of cell phone damage and DNA, "the question is not" If cell phone radiation can cause DNA damage! "The question is" can your body repair DNA damage without mutating genes. Studies show that DNA, single and double strand, breaks at levels below the current FCC exposure standard. There are also numerous complications attributed to RF radiation such as blood pressure increases, migraines, heart disease, kidney damage, hair loss, disorientation, numbness, insomnia, swelling, and twitching.

Custom Essays on Cell Phone Radiation

How do we reduce the potential risks of RF radiation exposure, particularly in cell phones? The number one answer is to use a hands-free head set. Shielding devices are available from certain manufacturers. You may also want to purchase a phone that places the antenna as far away from the user as possible. For some consumers, limiting the usage to a few minutes is an option. Use the cell phone in open spaces as often as possible, and limit phone calls in enclosed places. It is recommended that children do not use cell phones. Actual photos have been presented that compare radiation entering an adult brain and radiation entering a five-year-old child's brain. The depth of penetration to the brain is more in the child than the adult.

The manufacturers and cell phone industry basically dismisses all current research. The industry is terrified of liability should significant health risks be found. They say the studies are poorly conducted, irrelevant, or use whatever argument not to receive media attention. The Cellular Telephone Industry Association (CITA) discourages additional research. Every cell phone model has to be tested and meet Federal Communication Commission (FCC) standards before it can be sold in the United States.

The manufacturers primarily do testing themselves, which creates some uncertainty about the results. The exposure limit is based on the overall heating effects of radio frequency energy and the specific absorption rate (SAR), which measures the energy absorbed by the human body. Cell phone are allowed to emit a maximum SAR of 1.6 watts per kilogram as measured over one gram of body tissue. In 000, manufacturers were ordered to place labels on cell phones disclosing radiation levels.

Education is the key to determining if cell phone radiation concerns are worth the risk to you as an individual. At this point there is very little work on cell phone safety being conducted in the U.S. Almost all the major research is going on in Europe. Keep informed of the findings involved in the research. The more you know the better off you are. The computer offers many websites that lists health concerns, statistics, scientific studies, and agencies to contact if you have questions or concerns.

Studies show that significant high levels of RF radiation can interfere with electronic devices. This problem is more likely to occur with pulsed energy, which characterizes digital cellular telephones. Studies have shown that hand held cellular phones can effect the operation of heart pacemakers if the phone is placed directly over the device and there have been reports of interference with hearing aid. Individuals with electronic medical devices should consult with their physician and/or the phone manufacturer to determine what precautions should be taken. This is the reason for the non-use of cellular phones in hospitals today.

Laboratory rodent analysis plays a key role in determining potential radiation exposure to humans. In a test consisting of six laboratory rats, three rats were exposed for two hours to a power level of 0.1 watt of power. The other three rats were not exposed. Cell phones typically operate at a peak output of 0.6 watts. Examination of the animal's brain tissue 50 days later revealed that up to percent of the brain cells of the rats that received cell phone radiation exposures of 0.1 watt were dead or dying. The other group of rats showed no brain cell death. Cautions were noted that humans could face negative consequences from cell phone use in the long run.

Some countries use high-tech magnetic wood blocks to line its' building walls to battle against cell phone users on their premises. These wooden blocks absorb the radiation signal and make it impossible to use a mobile phone in any room lined with it. They are illegal in the United States, Britain, and Australia. Levi's is preparing to launch a pair of "anti radiation" trousers. The trousers will include a mobile phone pocket with "radiation-reducing" lining.

Today it is still unclear if cell phones actually cause any significant damage to the human body. Studies continue to contradict one another on the issue. Additional studies may shed some light on the true effects of cell phone radiation, but will likely confuse consumers even further. In the meantime, million of cell phone users take whatever risks may be involved in using the devices. Some have called the use of cell phones the biggest biological experiment in history.

Hamlet is quite possibly the most analyzed and scrutinized character in literature to date. Through his victories and failures, Shakespeare successfully portrayed the image of a man lost in a world dominated by emotions that spin dangerously out of control at times. Shakespeare's play has proven one of the most significant questions pressing humans is moral retribution possible in a spiritually ambiguous world? Hamlet is driven by the vengeance or his father's most unautural murder throughout the play. Like Hamlet, Fortinbras is driven by the same source, revenge and retribution for the death of his father. Both of these men wage war on their adversaries, but these two wars differ dramatically in nature. Hamlet's warfare is a psychological one waged on his uncle, the king. Fortibras' warfare is that of physical war, brought not only upon the person responsible for the demise of his father, but upon the entire country. Like the two aforementioned, Laertes seeks vengeance for the murder of his father. His mission, however, is blinded by rage and seems to be without significant purose. All three sons seek the same goals, but choose different ways of achieving their goals, making each plot for vengeance unique in their own ways.

Out of the three men, Hamlet's quest for revenge seems the most legitimate and therefore dramatic. Upon his arrival, Hamlet must cope with the death of his father, the loss of his crown and girlfriend, and the re-marriage of his mother at the same time. Although he has these other things hanging over his head, Hamlet makes it his mission to have retribution for the death of his father. For the first part of the story, Hamlet is not quite sure if his uncle is truly responsible for the murder of his father, and therefore this time is spent contemplating the possible solutions to the conflict he is faced with. Once he confirms the fact that his uncle is indeed responsible for the death of his father, Hamlet engages in a very elobarate plan to kill his uncle. Hamlet toys with the psychie of his uncle and those in his support, hoping to entwine their minds in too many insignificant intricacies that they overlook the fact that he will strike soon. Hamlet is however, only seeking revenge from one man, and one man only. Fortinbras, on the other hand, is waging war on an entire country. At times, the reader is forced to question the motivations of Fortinbras, and whether he is in acuality seeking retribution for the death of his father, or if he seeks the land he also lost in that tragic battle. At this same level of thinking, the reader is forced to contemplate the possibility of an alterier motive in Hamlet's plan. It is entirely possible that Hamlet did indeed seek to kill his uncle in order to capture the crown and the kingdom. These two alterier motives bring about one of the play's central themes, and causes the reader to question the possibility of moral retribution in a spiritural ambigious world. In the end of the play, Hamlet's actions prove to be selfish, because they lead to the demise of the love of his life, his mother, and himself.

Of the three, Fortinbras is one with the most to gain. For Hamelt and Laertes, the retribution they would receive for the death of their fathers would be limited to their own personal satisfaction, yet for Fortrinbras, the retribution could lead to his crowning and the takeover of an entire kingdom. As as a result of this, one is forced to question his motives. Fortinbras does not, howver, clearly state that his mission's only purpose is to only avenge his father's death. In fact, Fortinbras is the most morally sound of the three, simply because he does not go about seeking the revenge in a deceiving way. Fortinbras, unlike the other two, is straightforward about his mission. The ironic thing is, that in the end, the two who had planned against their adversaries so meticulously and deceivingly ended up dying in their efforts, while Fortinbras, the one who went about his way the most simple, becomes a victor and achieves every one of his goals without any blood on his hands. When he arrives to Denmark, the blood has already been shed by the others, and the spoils go to him. In fact, he ends up telling his men to carry Hamlet, his adversary, off as a soldier, showing him both honor and respect. This proves that although on the outside Fortinbras may have seemed to be a bit selfish in his actions, he truly was an honorable man, one that was motivated by more than blind rage.

Laertes' mission was one that was motivated by pure blind rage. Laertes was very passionate, but blinded by the rage that he had succom to, and this cost him his life. Unlike the other two, Laertes was very quick to action. He did not hesitiate or wait for anything, always keeping in mind the task at hand. The problem with is haste was that it would lead to his own demise, simply because in his haste he chose to trust Claudius, a move that proved to be fatal. Unlike Hamlet and Fortinbras, he does not constitute a plan, he simply comes home and accomplishes his goal. At the end of his life, he realizes his mistake in trusting Claudius and reveals Claudius to Hamlet, in a final attempt to morally justify his actions. Of the three, Laertes proves to be the most passionate about his mission, but also the most bloodthirsty. Hamlet passed on the opportunity to kill his uncle in prayer because he did not want him to go to heaven, displayng a true hate for the killer of his father, while Laertes merely wants vengeance and the blood of his fathers killer on his hands. Where he goes in the afterlife is of no concern to him. The only thing that matters is that vengeance is his and that he was the one to lay his father's killer to rest.

Custom writing service can write essays on The three vigilanties

All three of the vigilantes had legitimate reasons to want to kill his adervasary. Vengence and retribution were in order for all three, although each came in a very different way. Hamlet finally was able to kill his uncle while he was not in prayer, yet he died in the effort along with his mother and his beloved Ophelia. Laertes lost his own life in the process of avenging his father's death, as a direct result of his haste and blind rage. Fortibras is the only one who survives his quest, due to the simple fact that his mind was the clearest, while the other two were bordering on insanity. Fortinbras thought most clearly and came out of the situation the best of the three. It serves as proof that emotions can intertwine your mind so many times that it does not even work anymore, and you become entrapped in the enigma that is the human psychie. As Hamlet learned the hard way, emotions can be a very dangerous thing, leading one to think unclearly and make decisions that require much more thought. The only one who chose to think things out and go about his quest for vengeance was the only one who came out alive. He also came out with a kingdom to rule, forcing the reader to again question the possibility of ture moral retribution in a spiritually ambiguous world.

On a winter day, a tall muscular traveler and his skinny wife, followed by their cute and chubby eleven-year old son and three mix breed hunting dogs were at the edge of a rain-filed swamp in the western reaches of the new state of Louisiana. A lazy-bone from Tennessee had fled to avoid bankruptcy and jail was not happy with what he had to face, the family was getting worried about the road from Louisiana to Texas.

The three were dressed in buckskin garments which the mother and who appeared to be responsible for all important decisions, while her snobbish husband thrashed about deciding issues which never seemed to matter. The obvious thing about this family when you see them was the incredible amount of gear each member carried. They carried things like guns, ax, pots, extra article of clothing, and bundles of dried food. From every angle of their bodies, useful items sticking out which made them looked like three porcupines walking through the woods, they were so tired that they could cover only about nine miles a day while other better-organized travelers would have completed fifteen miles a day. This made us thing that the family were trying all their best to get to their destination, even though they had to carry bulky things and walk tirelessly. The father was imagining that if he was a general, he would make the shortest transit possible, and be safe in Texas.

The lazy guy's introduction of words like exploration and transit betrayed the fact that he had at some earlier time known like within a respectable Tennessee family, but a love of small gambling and a positive addiction to joblessness had led to a sad fall in his fortunes. His fall had not been great, just a slow erosion of holdings and a series of terrible lawsuits over land titles. When his family lost interest in his benefit because of his marriage to the daughter of a good-for-nothing frontiersman, he had no recourse but to leave home, a man with no land, no prospects and very little hope of improving.

This thirty-three years old man had decided in the fall of 18 that his condition in Gallatin, Tennessee, was so awful that he could escape only by taking the road from Nashville to Memphis to Little Rock to the southwest corner of Arkansas Territory. He and his family had struggled to reach the banks of the Red River, which he had followed into Louisiana. There they had cut west toward the Mexican frontier state of Texas, safe haven for any Americans who wanted to start his life over in a new and growing area.

However, to reach this reported paradise from Louisiana involved great risk, for when travelers came to these final swamplands separating the civilization of New Orleans and its outsiders from the wilderness of Texas, they faced, as the Jubal Quimpers did, about thirty miles of one of the most dangerous territories in the Americas. In the old days, it was called the Neutral Ground which means it did belong to neither Louisiana nor Texas. They hoped that if they settle there, they'd be able to avoid the conflict between Americans and Spaniards. But unfortunately this land attracted a lot of pirates, murderers, smugglers, women who abandoned their families, runaway slaves who killed their masters, and fakers. Finally they gave it to Louisiana, but it is still crust of the earth.

The little chubby boy called Yancey wanted to go runaway without continuing the journey when he was told to cross the swamp, but unfortunately been stopped by his mother. His mother reminded him that they were pushed out of Tennessee and there is nothing left for them but Texas.

When the family was trying to cross the swamp, came running along shouting at them a roundish, white-haired, ruddy-faced Irishman who is a Catholic priest. The Catholic priest was panting heavily as he tried to catch up. When he overtook the Quimpers, they noticed that he carried very little baggage which made of untanned deerskin. The priests quickly introduced himself to the family as Father Clooney, servant of God and the government of Mexico. Father Clooney was holding a worn out book which is a Spanish Bible. After hearing the priest introducing himself, Jubal Quimper introduced himself as a Methodist from Gallatin, Tennesse, and told the father that he was heading to Texas. The priest told an unbelievable story, he said that he was a rejected bishop in Ireland, and migrated to New Orleans and unfortunately could not find any community or township there. Father Clooney volunteered to sail to Mexico when the Spanish government few years back said that they wanted priests to serve in Texas. However, he was jobless again when he was about to take charge of all Texas north of San Antonio, but Mexicans threw the Spaniards out. Soon, there were few Mexican priests who were unwilling to move into Texas as Spaniards has been. Later on, the father told them that he will be the Catholic Church and going to conduct the baptism, marriages, the conversions.

The Quimpers were very curios and anxious to know about the meaning of conversions. The priests wanted to convert the family from Methodist to Catholics by saying that the family's religion will not help them of getting any land in Texas. It was rejected by the thin wife. The priest showed a piece of document "league and labor" saying that only Catholics could have land in Texas.

The Mexican government is considering new law which Catholic will get free land. Even more, if the guy was already married. A league is four thousand four hundred and twenty-eight American acres; a labor is a hundred seventy-seven. The rule is that you have to get a labor of free land, if you intend to farm it, plus an entire league if you run cattle. The priests suggested that the family to run cattle but the family did not have any cattle; the only way to gain land was that the family is converted to Catholics.

After much hesitation, finally the three Quimpers knelt in the Louisiana mud; their faces were turned west towards Texas. We think that it was a very serious moment for the Quimpers and the priests, because they were rejecting their former religion which had took care of them all awhile, and the priest was performing his first official act as an agent of his new government. All were nervous as the priest was asking questions like 'Do you accept the Body of Christ? Do you acknowledge in your hearts that the Holy Roman Catholic church is the ordination of Jesus Christ Himself? Do you accept without reservation the supremacy of our Worldly Father, the Pope? Are you willing to announce yourself as members of the Roman Catholic Church?'

The family was whispering so softly, Father Clooney administered the oath, but young Yancey noticed that something that the white-haired priests could not see is that his mother was holding her hands at the back behind her back. After the convertions, Jubal Quimper demanded that the priest write entitled to our league-and a labor.

Images of Good and Evil

"The media in its various forms provides many images of both good and evil in a variety of ways. These images have the power to persuade us to do good, evil or both."

I'm going to discuss the issues of images of good and evil. I agree what the statement has said. I think that the media is always trying to shows us something and try to tell us something. One image can be in evil or good, but you have to look in it in ways. For example, .11 images give us mostly a sad image and the people who were responsible were evil people. America's media would persuade that .11 was a horrible event, but in the other way, anti-americans would really think .11 was a image of good because of world trade would mean money which leads to power and greed. Media is a very powerful source of images; they can tell us any image can be evil or good. But in this essay I will talk about what I think are good and evil and how the media is promoting and reflecting a variety of contrasting images.

Do my essay on images of good and evil CHEAP !

The first image I founded was in a newspaper in the "Sydney Morning Herald" a picture of people putting on a war head, Sadam for the Mardi gras 00 parade. The image shows that Sadam fixing some nuclear weapons. I think that the media was really trying telling people that Sadam was an evil person, so they had to make fun of them in the Mardi gras parade.

"A cunning temptress threatens Australia with the reintroduction of the mullet and droopy moustache. Sadam has seduced our PM into sending our boys to 'camp in Iraq'…."

Then the report goes on how people are going to make fun of Sadam. It talks about how Sadam going to ruin this world. Sadam has been a war head image for this year, other than bush leading us to war, but Sadam has trained terrorists which threats the world. The image gives me one thought, "War". War means death, threats countries, power, etc. no one wants war, other than the people who want power and money. Sadam was now, one of an event in the Mardi Gras. To show how criminal gets in to a special event. The media has been persuading us that Sadam is an evil image, to look at. The image looks evil by itself, so I think its real evil image.

The second image I'm going to talk about is an anti-war image in Pisa, Italy. I founded this image in a famous magazine, "TIME". It was talking about the world protest, people around the world protesting for "peace, not war".

"An anti-war activist poses as a dead man with a chalk outline in central Pisa, Italy. Protesters broke into an airport to hang up rainbow banners and staged sit-ins at stations, protesting against a possible US attack on Iraq…"

I think the image itself is a really good example to people. A person lying down with a white outline around the person, this seems like a police case with a victim dead. This is a smart image of the person who did it. It really means that if we had war, we will have lots of dead people on the ground, with the murder not founded. The murder would mostly refer to George W. Bush or Sadam. In this image the murder would directly refer to George W. Bush, because he wants to war with Sadam.

I think this image is a good image of what people think of war, although the media doesn't make it like a good image. To tell this world war means pure evil to this world. War only makes us greed; want more than we got death, etc. The media makes the image of the person a bad image. They saying that the people who were protesting were messing around broke in places to protest. But at the end of the report, the media says the protest around the world is a great dramatic event.

Overall this nd image, I think it's an image of good. The image really shows us how people around the world care about war, and what people think.

In my rd image, I looked around the internet and saw an image of Hitler. He was the Nazi party leader which ruled Germany till end of World War . Over 50 million people died during World War , which he started. I think this image is an evil image. The site talks about what things Hitler did, killed, said about people, propaganda, a timeline of what happened in the war. The site describe it really Hitler as an evil person. He hated Jews, and killed around 700, 000 innocent Jews. He nearly wiped out race of Jews. The main reason I think the picture of Hitler is evil because he reminds of racism, directly to the holocaust, World War , responsible of 50 millions innocent people's death. The image gives me all the bad things that Hitler did in the past. The website tells people how evil Hitler was, how he did things, etc; the person who made the site is obviously a person who hated Hitler; he said nothing good about Hitler. Although Hitler did change the world, Things would be different if Hitler wasn't born, no "United Nations", no new medical medicines, there wouldn't be internet if Hitler wasn't here!

But, overall I think that my rd image was an evil image, as in the person, Hitler. He had killed too many people, 50 million people, killed all the Jews just because he hated them.

In my 4th image, I was looking at "CNN" I founded a good image. The mission, dedicated strictly to scientific research, was a rare space shuttle flight that did not stop at the international space station. During the 16-day trip, the seven-person crew of the shuttle Columbia worked on more than 80 experiments. The flight, which included the first Israeli astronaut, launched under extremely tight security. They were talking about the space shuttle that exploded 4 minutes before landing. They released a videotape showing the few last minutes of all the crew. All 7 crew died, Rick D. Husband, William C. McCool, Michael P. Anderson, David M. Brown, Kalpana Chawla, Laurel Clark, Ilan Ramon. They all were brave astronauts; "CNN" was talking about how brave, smart, decent but unlucky. I think these people were really brave, this really good image for people these days.

The images of these sources impacted on me are the photo anti-war protester poses as a dead man with a chalk outline. That image gives me how I should I react with the war, made me think about what war means and leads to. It made me feel sorry the all soldiers who have to go to war.

The other images was the image of the Columbia's flight, it really made me feel sad for those brave people who try to fix a satellite for us. It made me think how ever god would let these good people die.

At last, I think that the media role is really important. They can tell an image is really evil or good in any way, even thought the image might be the opposite what the media tells you. You have to look things ways, your way and your opposite way of life. Things can be very different if you look the other way of images. Some images the media says like the anti-war poses dead with a white chalk outline is a evil image, but I looked the opposite way of the image, and I think it's a really a good image to people. I think that any image can be images of good and evil in various aspects of life.

Imagine that your parents are lying in bed when suddenly a woman bursts into their bedroom and hacks away at them with a pickax till they are dead. She is caught by police and given a fair trial. She is found guilty of murder and sentenced to death by lethal injection. Fourteen years later, as the day of execution approaches for this woman, she requests an appeal. Because she is a woman, her case suddenly becomes highly publicized. Meanwhile hundreds of other men appeal their deaths and nobody ever hears their story.

Karla Fay Tucker killed two people with a pickax on June 1, 18. She was found guilty and sentenced to death by lethal injection. Fourteen years later she appealed and her case became the center of controversy because a woman had not been executed since the Civil War.

The fact that she is a woman does not change the fact that she killed a person. Even though her appeal was not based on her sex, her sex became the center of the medias attention. This woman has just intentionally chopped up two people with a hacksaw, and people want to pity her because she is a woman. Meanwhile hundreds of men are being executed because a stray bullet they fired killed a person they did not even intend on killing.

In our society, people seem to have more of a problem with the death of a woman than with the death of a man. Women are excluded from combat when they go to war. People are surprised when they see a woman in an occupation that puts her in the line of fire, such as a police woman or a firewoman. Men are viewed by society as stronger, aggressive, and powerful. Because of this, it is easier for a woman to claim insanity or self defense. Women are seen as helpless making it easier to find some reasoning for their crimes. I am not saying that all the men on death row are innocent or that we should put more women on death row to even out the numbers, but many women on death row appeal and get away with life in prison while many men with less serious crimes are being killed rather than serving life in prison. Women rallied and protested to be treated as equals of men. If society is going to give women a right to vote and a job to equal opportunity, then why can't the law be applied the same to everyone. A man, a woman, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, straight, or gay should all receive the same punishment.

Buy Should the death penalty be applied equally to men and women? term paper

If we were asked who should be put to death, a man or a woman, both of whom have committed the same crime, we would most likely choose the man. It has become second nature to us as human beings to view men as stronger and more aggressive than women. But there are women out there who get away with murder just because they are women. It is not right that a person can get away with such a gruesome act just because of their sex.

Karla Fay Tucker was eventually executed and rightfully so. Her appeal was based on her claiming that she was a born again Christian. Even the Pope wrote letters on her behalf. She regretted what she did and claimed to have changed, but that does not change the fact that she killed two people. If Karla Fay Tucker would not have been executed, death row inmates everywhere would suddenly believe in God. Appeals would be filed left and right. Not only that, but a whole other debate would start on the mixing of church and state. If she would have been forgiven because she believed in God, the line between church and state would be crossed and families of inmates killed by the death penalty in the past would protest. Everyone who appealed would have to be have their sentenced changed and the death penalty would be become a rare occurrence for those who refused to believe in God.

Karla Fay Tucker should have been glad that she was sentenced to death by lethal injection rather than tortured and hacked up with a pickax like her victims. She got to be injected and suffer a painless death while the two people she killed suffered a tremendous amount of pain as she hacked away. And those are not the only two victims Karla left behind. Those two people have friends and family who have also been victimized. What if those people killed had been your parents or your neighbors and Karla Fay Tucker had not been sentenced to death? I personally would be living in fear that she would one day be able to walk the streets a free woman after what she did. She clearly knew that taking a persons life had its consequences. What person does not know that if you purposely kill a person you will not be put to death, especially in Texas. She did not accidentally kill her victims in a car crash or fire a bullet that happened to hit them. She broke into their house and hacked their bodies up with a hacksaw because one of the victims left an oil stain on the carpet. I do not care how sorry she was, she still brutally murdered two people with the intent of killing them in her mind.

I am a Christian and I was taught to forgive people. I was taught to turn the other cheek. I was told to let he without sin cast the first stone. I was once against the death penalty, but one day my father asked me what I would do if it was my daughter. If my daughter was brutally murdered, I would want to be the one holding the lethal injection as it injected the person responsible for taking my daughters life. Unfortunately, when things become personal our opinion changes. When I am now asked if I think that it is right that a person be put to death, I think of the victims, both immediate victims and those victimized (family and friends of the victim). It is easy for me to feel bad for Karla Fay Tucker and say poor woman because I was not affected by her killings. When we are presented with case studies of murders and asked what we would do it is easy to say we would choose life in prison for that person over the death penalty, but everything changes when we are victimized. We feel a need for revenge, a need to avenge the victims death. We feel a need to defend ourselves. If we put that person in prison for life, there is a chance that they may escape, or be let out early for good behavior, and we do not want that. To some extent we feel that the person is going to come after us. Those victimized want peace of mind. It is only fair that the murderer be ready to give his or her life after having taken another's.

Karla Fay Tucker's execution was completely justified. If anything, it was gracious. If she was willing to take a life, then she should have been prepared to loose her own. The fact that she was a woman may have bought her some time and gotten people to pity her, but justice was served and Karla Fay Tucker was pronounced dead at 645 PM on February , 18. Unfortunately, most women on death row appeal and get away with life in prison if anything. Justice is not always served and our country needs to do something about it.

The Sugar promo vid Landing Primo is in the works and I've seen some of the footy so trust me when I say these boys are throwing it down. It will retail for about half the price of most videos, which leaves you no choice, but to pick one up (you cheap little bastards). First 500 copies are free with the purchase of a board.

Logics director Matt Solomon has put together (and when I say put together I do mean literally…cement blocks, fire extinguishers, bricks, airplane parts, pipes and whatever else was laying around was put to good use) a skate training grounds full of obstacles in an abandoned warehouse somewhere near downtown LA in an extremely shady area. It's been dubbed The Ghetto Park for good reason and we suggest you stay away, far away because without the password you can't get in anyway. Check out the next issue of Logic for the lowdown on the spot.

Marko s/s front pop at the Ghetto Park

They say you get what you pay for but I guess whoever wrote that silly quote didn't get a chance to step onto one of Sugar's high quality, super low cost S Logo series boards. Mid size model (7.65) now available at skate shops. Finally a board with graphics for the price of a blank, other models will follow soon.

If you haven't heard the word on the street about the new Sugar promo then now you know. The ten-minute teaser will have you juiced to go skate as soon as it ends. The video is being distributed in limited availability so pop your head into your local skateshop to see if they have a copy to view, if they don't, have them e-mail us so we can send them one.

We are still on the prowl for new faces and young blood for our team so if you have any footage send it in. If you happen to flip through the new Big Brother then remember to stop and check out Billy Roper's premier ad. Billy's been racing around the White House riding Autobahn wheels and wearing down the Capitol's marble ledges with Krux trucks. Apparently, Billy has re-wrote the book on skating the infamous gold rail, there's only a few tricks left for him to do down it. Ever find yourself on the top of a snow-covered mountain shitting your pants every two minutes? Marko has, on a recent trip to Mammoth with Pablo to go snowboarding Marko found himself tied to the toilet seat with non-stop diarrhea, courtesy of food poisoning from a Domino's cheesy pizza. Go Domino's! Still the best pizza in town, shits excluded of course.

The second version of the afro board is out now. Its got sixties style, groovy, shagalistic board graphics. Look for it peacefully hanging at your favorite skateshop.

Roper! Roper! Roper! I know, you're probably asking yourself who the hell is Roper? Well, before you bust a vein in your brain, I suggest you stop trying to answer the million dollar question and I'll tell you…Sugar Sports has rolled out the red carpet for Washington DC's own little stick of dynamite, Billy Roper. Claudius

The appearances and the personalities of the characters in the play "Hamlet" is essential to how the play is received and interpreted by the audience. Claudius is Hamlets main opposition throughout the play thus making Claudius the main antagonist. Claudius has a very complex personality, which is somewhat hard to decipher directly from the play. Having viewing the videos, however, did provide some further insight into this character. His personality consists of many different qualities and attributes. Some qualities of this character include being sedulous, having a commanding presence and his ability to feign honest. He is one of the main characters in "Hamlet" and is included in almost all of the events that take place within the play.

Claudius is one of the main characters in the play and very important. Without him, the play would not even take place because of his initial actions, which set the scene for the entire play. Claudius kills Hamlets father who is the King of Denmark. Claudius was the brother to the past king and so he was Hamlets uncle. After the murder, Claudius became King and very quickly married Gertrude who was Hamlets mother. Hamlet was suspicious of this ever so hasty marriage and his suspicions were later confirmed when his fathers' ghost visited him. The ghost reveals to Hamlet that Claudius had murdered him and Hamlet should seek revenge. Hamlet becomes very angry, on the edge of becoming mad, and that is how Claudius ends up being the main antagonist, the opposition to Hamlet.

Obviously Claudius is prepared to take any actions necessary to achieve his personal goals. This is apparent when he purposely murders his brother to become King of Denmark. It is also evident when he sends Hamlet, his nephew/step son, away to be killed so as to rid him of a potential adversary and threat. If you look at all of his actions up until the end of the play it show that he is unremitting in regards to completing his goal of becoming the King of Denmark. It is this quality that allows the play to take place. Without it, Claudius would have not murdered his brother and therefore there would be no conflict for which this play could have then occurred.

Another part of Claudius's character includes his ability to command his subjects with the power in his speech and his presence. He is one of those characters that seem like he was destined to be a king. This is evident in the way he conducts himself when certain situations arise. He is calm but at the same time he always knows what he wants the outcome of a situation to be. He usually gets his way. For example, when Laertes confronts Claudius with a sword after hearing of his fathers death, Claudius handles it calmly like it is not happening and persuades Laertes to side with him against Hamlet. He turns opposition to himself into an ally against his enemies.

Claudius is so important to this play. He initiates many of the events and takes part in most of them as well. It is his actions within the play that make the play what it is.

1. Never really enjoyed the job. His expectations of what to expect was not close to what his experience was.

. His philosophy was, "They hired me to enforce the rules and I am going to enforce them."

. He was frustrated at times by his feelings that there were no real punishments that the kids knew would be handed down for bad behavior.

4. Was really good at a one-on-one level with the kids. I witnessed several occasions where what came out of his mouth really impressed me. His philosophy and understanding of the issue and how he communicated would sometimes blow me away.

5. He did have a temper. His good advice was sometimes followed by real anger when he perceived the kids not following through with what he had asked of them.

6. He would pull pranks. I never witnessed him do anything mean, but the occasional shaving cream or toothpaste in the hair happened a few times.

7. He would curse occasionally. Brent would be better to ask, but I asked him on one occasion to tone it down.

8. He would keep their canteen at times. Brent and Brian and to some extent me realized that this one real power we had over them. If Brian perceived that the kids were disobeying them or acting inappropriately, then he would threaten to take their canteen. It usually worked, but sometimes he would follow through with the threat. I did on several occasions give them their canteen when Brain or Brent had taken it away. I am probably too soft hearted and should have conferred with those two to come up with a solution.

. They did play "freeze" in the dining hall. The kids loved and the several times I sat at that table, the kids would get mad at me because I did not play any games. I never felt they did it too long.

10. Did have a knife, but never heard him threaten anyone with it.

11. Never heard about the urinating in the super-soaker incident.

1. Never heard about the photo of his testicles.

1. Never heard about the propane tank in his backpack.

14. He was frustrated about Stan giving rewards and then having the kids obsessively asking for it. "Stan said I could get coke", but knowing it was against the rules to have one was frustrating to Brian.

15. He did collect money from the kids on two occasions that I know of and I felt on both occasions he used all of the money. The first was before our night at the upper campsite. He bought extra sodas and chips for the kids. Every kid had at least - sodas that night. The second was a couple of nights before the kids left. He collected money and went down to the soda machine and bought everyone sodas.

16. The line about "your parents are paying $160/day and you are not doing anything" was said, but he said it on a rainy day when we were sitting in the bunk and he was laughing when he said it. Truth be told, those kids in Bunk 1 would have liked nothing more than to sit in the bunk all day doing nothing.

17. He was very touchy about the kids touching his stuff.

18. Did not know about the duct tape.

1. He was frustrated with the kids' attitudes at times. Hearing " I'm gonna tell Stan" a thousand times would get to anybody. Matt Fox and Jason Mirra would say it on a daily basis. I feel that they were not used to a counselor that actually enforced the rules. They would say that their counselors in the past would let them have candy or drink sodas, or do whatever. They said it to me numerous times. This is what led Matt Fox's dad to talk to Brian on visiting day. Matt spends three to four weeks telling his parents how mean Brian is and Mr. Fox felt it necessary to speak to Brian. I feel that his dad reacted to hearing one side of the story and reacted wrongly.

BRENT

1. Did not know about throwing Richard.

. Bathroom incident it did happen. I walked in and everyone was laughing (including Richard) about what happened. I told Richard he should throw water on Brent to retaliate as a joke. He did and ran out of the cabin. Brent took it the wrong way and dumped Richard's cubby. I talked to Brent, but he was stubborn so I helped Richard put his cubby back together since I felt I was responsible for starting the chain of events.

. Did not know about the nipple incident or the throw my trash out or I'll kill you incident.

CONCLUSION

Before this all happened, I had considered Richard one of my favorite campers. I never would have guessed that he would go home and tell his parents what he did tell them. On visiting day, his mother and I spoke. The only thing she mentioned to me was that Richard was bored. She said that she was a former camper and counselor and trusted us to work with Richard. I said I would do whatever was necessary and so after that, Richard starting going to Arts and Crafts up to 10 times per week. The other kids asked why Richard got to go so often and I would say that his parents set it up, but they sensed that it was unfair that they had to go to areas they did not like while Richard went to A&C.

In all of the letters that Richard wrote home, I doubt he ever mentioned the so-called "abuse" he was facing. Did he think we would read his mail? Did he not think that his mom and dad would not be at camp the next day if he leveled such charges in a letter or phone call? I never heard from Richard's parents after parents weekend and I feel certain that they would have called if there were any hint of problems with Richard. I feel that he is an overprotected child with a tendency to create "problems" in order to flesh out a reaction from his parents. Maybe because of his size his parents have felt the need to put him in a bubble, but as a veteran camper with parents with camping experience, they should all know what to expect and that a little teasing, rough play, etc. might happen with 1 guys leaving in a small, hot environment for 7 weeks. I regret that Richard did not have the camping experience that he hoped for and I do feel that there were times (few) where Brian stepped over the line, but I do not

Irony is the use of words that expresses something that has a different meaning, or sometimes the opposite meaning of the literal expression. The use of irony in any kind of story is a good way of making someone, to the audience, appear as a fool. Anyone can see what characters say, but it can show us the thought process of these characters. In Edgar Allan Poe's story "The Cask of Amontillado," irony is a key element from beginning to end.

As "The Cask of Amontillado" opens, we are pushed into the lives of two prideful characters, Montresor and Fortunato. From the beginning, it is shown that there is nothing fortunate about Fortunato. This fact alone is ironic. Poe decides to name the victim of this story Fortunato, yet in the end he seems to be he one with all the misfortune. Fortunato is introduced in the first line by Montresor, having spoken of the injuries and the great revenge he would take upon Fortunato. He is first seen during the carnival season wearing motley and "a tight fitting parti-striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conica; cap and bells" (7). He had dress of fool's suit, much like a joker that is on a deck of cards. Yet this time the joke would be on him.

At their first meeting in this story there are two ironic things that happen which foreshadow the future events. During the first few events of the story, we are shown that Montresor is is not too fond of Fortunato. Knowing this fact, we see that when they meet up the narrator says, "I was so pleased to see him that I thought I should never have done wringing his hand" (7). At this moment Fortunato might be under the impression this warm handshake is out of joy, but little does he know that same hand will lead to his death. Also Montresor says, "My dear Fortunato, you are luckily met. How remarkably well you are looking to-day" (7). He was looking well enough to die.

Physical appearance was not the only use on irony in relation to Fortunato's health in the story. Montresor seems to be quite scared that something will happen to Fortunato when they enter the catacombs. Ironically he takes great care to assure Fortunato's safety. Before entering, the narrator says, "My friend, no. It is not the engagement, but he severe cold with which I perceive you are afflicted. The vaults are insufferable damp" (7). It is almost as if Montresor is using reverse psychology to get his victim to enter the damp dark cavern. Having entered the catacombs a fowl and harsh, perhaps raspy cough overcomes Fortunato. Due to the kind and protective nature of Montresor, which truly an illusion, he tries to convince his "friend" to go back. The response of Fortunato is innocent "the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough" (7). The reply of Montresor is hauntingly ironic "Truetrue" (7). He knows that the cough will not be the death of Fortunato.

Another bit of irony is found in the way that Fortunato enter into the catacombs, his future deathbed. He decides to do everything with his own free will. Nothing about the journey into the deep dark tomb is forced. Fortunato is quite an arrogant and prideful man. He considers himself an expert in the field of fine wine and drinks. For this reason, when he hears that his friend wants to see if he has received the real Amontillado, Fortunato has no reserves about going. Montresor plays him for the fool he is when he says, "As you are engaged, I am on my way to Luchresi. If any one has a critical turn, it is he. He will tell me" (7). Fortunato, in his mind, is the best person for the job and does not want anyone else to judge the Amontillado. He even back bites Luchresi by saying, "Luchresi cannot tell Amontillado from Sherry" (7). The character Luchresi is not mentioned much in the story but it is my personal opinion that he was a very knowledgeable person as well regarding wines. Perhaps even a threat or competition in Fortunato's eyes. An ironic aspect of Luchresi is found in his name. It is similar to the word lucre, which means profit or gain. In order to lure Fortunato in, he overcomes or gains control of Fortunato just by using Luchresi's name. So in essence Luchresi's name was really used as personal profit over Fortunato.

The change of setting shows a bit of scenic irony, leading from a happy carnival atmosphere to a dark and dreary catacomb. During the journey there are several things that happen that add to the ironic mood. At one point they stop to have a drink and to make an informal toast. Fortunato exclaims, "I drink… to the buried that repose around us" (7). Then Montresor responds with, "And I to your long life" (7). The first bit of irony is in the fact that Montresor knows that Fortunato will in fact not have a long life. Yet there is a deeper irony in these comments. Fortunato drinks to the dead that lie at rest. And he is going to be the one that shall die. Montresor toasts to life, which is what he will get to keep even after that night. Montresor is not physically going to die, but emotionally he is drawn to madness.

After entering the catacombs, it is reveled that Fortunato is part of a group known as the Masons. After taking a drink he shows a sign of the masons to Montresor "He emptied it at a breath. His eyes flashed with a fierce light. He laughed and threw the bottle upward with gesticulation I did not understand" (74). This gesture was a sign and one that had to be repeated as Montresor did not understand. Obviously Montresor is not a mason or he would have understood the sign. To cover for his lack of knowledge he presents a trowel. Montresor has no idea this little display will work, but since Masons do work with bricks Fortunato was not alarmed. Little did he know that he was looking at the tool that would seal him in his death bed. In response to the presentation of the trowel he states, "You jest" (74), showing that he thought the whole think was a joke.

At the story comes to an end having been chained down, Fortunato screams, "The Amontillado" (75)! He did not understand where was the Amontillado? In his mind the Amontillado was something to drink, to test. Montresor replies, "True… the Amontillado" (75). In the eyes of Montresor the Amontillado was not just a fine sherry, but represented the success of pulling off the murder.

After the death of Fortunato, the story comes to a close. One again the story has been told but the memories of the events still haunt Montresor. True to his word he accomplished the task of killing Fortunato, "with impunity" (71). There is a great phrase of irony that polishes off the story. The last words of the story are written in the Latin tongue "In Pace Requiescat" (76)! This translates to, "May he rest in peace." This phrase applies to Fortunato as he might rest peacefully in his tomb. Yet I do not think peace will ever come to Montresor who has led himself into his own, personal hell.

Orwell: Shooting an Elephant

The story that my evaluation will be based on is Shooting an Elephant written in 1936. The author George Orwell was born in 1903 in India to a British officer raised in England. He attended Eton College, which introduced him to England's middle and upper classes. He was denied a scholarship, which led him to become a police officer for the Indian Imperial in 1922. He served in Burma until resigning in 1927 due to the lack of respect for the justice of British Imperialism in Burma and India. He was now determined to become a writer, so at the brink of poverty he began to pay close attention to social outcasts and laborers. This led him to write Down and Out in Paris and London (1933) during the Spanish Civil War. He embodied his hate for totalitarian system in his book Animal Farm (1945). George Orwell fell to the disease of tuberculosis at forty-seven, but not before he released many works. He wrote six novels, three documentary works, over seven hundred reviews and newspaper articles, and a volume of essays (1149). This particular story was very interesting and found it to hold a lot of truth. Shooting an Elephant is about an English man that was a police officer in Burman, who was hated for his race and felt it almost impossible to do his job. He had to deal with a lot of hatred and disrespect, but yet he was expected to do what the town's people asked of him when they asked. When the elephant got loose the first person the sub-inspector at the opposite end of the town called was the main character, who was to be nameless throughout the entire story. He wanted him to go do something about the loose elephant because the mahout (the keeper and driver of an elephant) was away and no one else could handle a situation such as this. The main character grabbed his 44 rifle and set out to find the elephant. The purpose of the gun was not to kill the elephant but to just scare it with the noise. Little did the officer know the act of grabbing the gun to just scare the elephant would lead to its demise. On the way to find the elephant the officer learned it had destroyed a garden, a bamboo hut, devoured some stock and had trampled a cow. As the officer went further on he found that the elephant had killed a townsman just minutes before. Now thinking that the elephant could be dangerous he asked for a larger and more powerful rifle. He only wanted the bigger gun in case he was threatened in any way, not to cause unnecessary harm to the elephant. After asking for the gun he then realized that the crowd became anxious and wanted to see what was going to happen to the elephant. As he walked on to locate the elephant the realization that the whole town was watching and waiting for him to make his move was very apparent. The officer came across the elephant eating in a clearing and felt at ease that the animal was finished with his path of destruction. He glanced around him and realized that he would be forced to kill the animal. The town's people disliked him greatly, but with a weapon and the ability to kill the wild beast the quickly changed their opinion about the officer. Although the elephant was harmless at this point, the officer fell into the trap of peer pressure and felt obligated to terminate the animal's life. He walked as close to the elephant as he could without startling it and pulled the trigger. George Orwell then goes on to describe in great detail the horrible death that the elephant experienced. I liked the message of this story, but I did not care for the way that the author chose to present it. The message was very clear in that there was a common problem between people in general and certain races in the mid-thirties. The message was that even though peers may expect something of them it is not always the right thing to do. This is displayed in the paragraph at the top of page 683 and continues until the middle of the page. The main character mentions right before he shoots the elephant the first time that " he was a puppet pushed to and fro by the will of those yellow faces behind" (683). He also describes why he is expected to shoot the elephant by saying " a sahib has got to act like a sahib; he has got to appear resolute, to know his own mind and do definite things" (683). Throughout this paragraph he also mentions why he feels that he must shoot the elephant by saying, " When the white man turns tyrant it is his own freedom that he destroys. He becomes a sort of hollow, posing dummy, the conventionalized figure of a sahib. For it is the condition of his rule that he shall spend his life in trying to impress the "natives" and so in every crisis he has to do what the "natives" expect of him. He wears a mask, and his face grows to fit it" (683). The officer did not want to commit such a heinous act to a magnificent animal that was no longer causing harm. He also felt bad for the mahout, but the look on the faces and eyes were stronger than the feeling of guilt inside of him. Many people go through this every day, but not to the magnitude that was presented in this particular story. They find themselves in situations that they do not want to be in, yet they feel obligated to do what the crowd wants. I didn't like the way the story was presented for the fact that the death of the elephant was described in such graphic detail. For example when Orwell states, "His mouth was wide open- I could see far down into caverns of pale pink throat" (684). He also goes into greater detail by saying " thick blood welled out of him like red velvet, but still he did not die' (684). The vivid description continues with the explanation of the guilt the officer felt and how long it took the massive mammal to die. I feel that the author would have been able to make his point just as effective without describing the death in the way he chose to. At the end of the story it is described how the officer feels about being responsible for the elephants death. It is made clear that he knows what he did was wrong and that he will have to live with this decision for the rest of his life. It is also clear that he gave into the pressure of the towns people when he states in the last line that " I had done it solely to avoid looking a fool" (685). This made me feel that he had no real remorse for the killing and that his reputation was winning out over his very own conscious. This story did fit into this particular section very well because of the portrayal of the cultural and identity aspects of life. The officer is forced to deal with and question his identity by the feelings he has when finds and kills the elephant. The culture is represented by the "coolie, yellow faces, and Buddhist" (680-685). It also fits very well with the author's feelings on imperialism, because the main character states that he feels that it is an evil thing (680). In all consideration I understood why the author had to describe the slaughter of the elephant in such detail. It added to the effectiveness of the story by painting a very clear picture that the actions of the officer were wrong. His point would not have been taken so seriously if he just stated that the elephant died after many shots or in any other basic way. Overall I did enjoy the message very much and felt that it fit into the section very well, but I did not care for the way the author displayed the message.
