Dear Journal,
Today father John Smith woke us up at five o'clock, before the wake up trumpets sounded. He had been with us since we picked him, and a couple of others, up three weeks ago. He brought exiting news the war was over!! Yesterday at nine o'clock news came that General Lee had signed his and the rest of the Confederate army's surrender. General Grant and Lee had come to noble terms, generous on both sides. General Grant had ordered rations for more than 5,000 Confederates. Poor Confederates they must had been starving. We have cut off their supplies for at least a week. Rumours say that only one third of Confederate army are not feeble from starvation or sickness.
Finally I will get to see my wife and my kid! With this whole war, started by those feisty, greedy, territorial Confederates, I thought that I would never see them again. I wonder how they have changed; there has been a lot of trouble sending letters around the country. I have only received one letter back from them. They will be very proud that I have helped to end the Confederacy, and 0that I have been present in this glorious event. The only one that won't be so happy about the Union victory is my cousin Johnny, a Confederate Soldier; I hope he is all right. We were split up; he went to the Confederate army and I went to the Union army. I plan to stay one more month in the army and then go back to my farm. For as Major O'Malley said, "The longer you stay in the Army the more government goodies you will get."
