Comparison- Contrast Essay
When I read "Dream Variations" and "A Dream Within a Dream." I had to read and re-read the poems to find the similarities and differences between the two poems. In this essay I will present a comparison and contrast of two poems using some of the elements of poetry.
The subject of Langston Hughes's poem, "Dream Variations", is dreams. Hughes, the voice of the poem, uses a tone that is hopeful and in a way tired.
Hughes is hopeful that he will be able "To whirl and to dance till the white day is done " "Then rest at cool evening…. While night comes on gently". When Hughes shows his sense of tiredness it is more of an inference than a directly stated statement, it seems Hughes is tired of not being able to feel comfortable in the sun as he is at night. This is his dream. One other element of poetry is imagery; Hughes uses much of this. The lines, "To fling my arms wide", "To whirl and to dance", "Then rest at cool evening" and "Dark like me" appeals to our sense of sight.

The poem, "A Dream Within a Dream", by Edgar Allan Poe is similar to Langston Hughes's poem "Dream Variations". The two poems have the same subject, dreams. Poe and Hughes are also different. Although they have both written a poem about dreams the way in which they approach the subject is very different. Poe uses a dream to describe a dream, while Hughes takes a dream and tells what he wants to be able to do.
Poe and Hughes are different yet similar in many ways, I feel they are both great writers who are able to get their message across only after profound analysis of the poems, if you only skim the top of the surface you can't truly appreciate their work.
