China has a very interesting, and complex history that spans thousands of years. In a way, you can separate China's history by the dynasty, for they indicate which family was ruling China at a certain time. Both of the paintings that I've chosen come from the same dynasty; the Ming Dynasty, which brought in a scene of peace. This was a drastic change, due to the previous dynasty in which the Mongolians ruled. Even though things had seemed to become peaceful, there were disagreements in the art world. This disagreement was between two different types of painters in China; the court painters, and the literati painters. The court painters were professional artist and usually did work for high officials in the government, while the literati painters were usually religious intellects whose artwork was done for self-enjoyment. Therefore, the focus of both groups led to a huge contrast. I have chosen, "Elegant Gathering in the Apricot Garden" as my example of a court artist painting and, "Shaded Dwellings Among Streams and Mountains" as an example of a literati work. With these two depictions, I will focus on how they differ in formal aspects, subject matter, and whether or not Chinese art is still idealized in this way.

The formal aspects of the literati and court artwork are easy to distinguish. The literati didn't sell their artwork. They wanted to satisfy themselves. As you can see in "Shaded Dwellings Among Streams and Mountains", by Dong Qichang, it is totally done in black in white. Literati artists seemed to be "cheap" with their materials. This is a hanging scroll, which consists of ink on paper using negative space to define shape, and to represent snow or fog. In this artwork, Qichang shows space recession by cutting the artwork into sections, a technique that wasn't used as much by earlier literati painters. In contrast, we have the "Elegant Gathering in the Apricot Garden" which shows a lot of different colors, which are more appealing to the eye of the people. This work was made to attract attention and admiration. Since court painters relied on their artwork as a form of income, they were a lot more cautious of the public eye. As you can see, artwork shows the men sitting in luxury with a crane among them. The medium for this hand scroll is ink and color on silk, which also makes the creation a little flashier. Another way to compare the artworks is by subject matter.

What are the two depictions about? Lets start with the literati painting. Qichang, like many other literati painters has depicted a landscape in which nature seems dominant to civilization. The mountains tower over all and this is a good example of how literati painters show their religious connection with nature. A lot of times, you may see a traveler on the mountains, but very rarely will you see one at the top of the mountain, which can represent the journey of becoming one with nature. Xie Huan was one of the emperor's favorite artists and advisors and he created a historical painting which depicts a gathering of officials. Usually, a court painting has something to do with a politician, whether it's praising one's ruler or depicting a historical event that includes the higher authorities.

Nowadays, some people paint for fun while others make a profession out of it. In modern China, there really isn't a dispute on whether one is worst than the other, but in some parts, artist are no long looked at with as much respect as they had in the Ming Dynasty. However, China has always changed its social views every now and then. Communism isn't as strong as it once was giving more freedom to those who want to become professional artist and express their views. Painting for fun is still strong in China; especially with calligraphy. Children are taught to depicted calligraphy very precisely. There are even competitions for calligraphy in which the young as well as the old participate. As for the court paintings, there isn't an emperor anymore so this category of paintings isn't near as vibrant as before. Of course the prime minister may have his personal artist, but he is not a court painter.

In conclusion, the Ming Dynasty was a time where the formal qualities reflected the lifestyle and beliefs of the artist. The two main types were the literati painters and the court painters. Even thought he court painters didn't always work out of enjoyment, or spiritual development, their paintings were flawless. Even though the literati painters used cheaper materials, their paintings have influenced other countries' religious and artistic scenes, especially Japan's. Both literati, and court artist had a great impact on Chinese art.

Our environment is affected by our daily actions. The earth is plagued with land, air and water pollution. Some of the problems we face on earth are deforestation, nuclear waste, acid rain, global warming, overpopulation and some animals are endangered. Air pollution has many different sources. Power-generated plants, oil refineries, chemical plants, and steel mills contribute to about 140 million tons of pollutants into the air every year. Automobiles account for at least 80 percent, of air pollution; the heaviest polluter. Another type of air pollution is acid rain. Acid rain is formed when sulfur and nitrogen are distributed from factories, automobiles and power plants. The sulfur and nitrogen rise up into the clouds and come back down as rain that is contaminated. It damages forests, crops and soils. It also kills fish and animals that live in the water. In 170, the Clean Air Act was implemented in the United States. The Clean Air Act of 170 set standards to better the quality of the air. It required all of the states to form plans to rid air pollution. Sewage, pesticides, fertilizers, industrial chemicals, oil and litter are the leading causes of water pollution. These pollutants get into the water, contaminating our drinking water. Poor cities such as Mexico City, Cairo and Shanghai have no choice but to drink contaminated water. These people suffer form diseases such as typhoid, cholera and dysentery. These diseases come from microorganisms in contaminated water. In 165 Congress passed the Water Quality Act of 165. This act gave states one year to set standards to better the quality of the water within their boundaries. Land pollution is a threat to our environment. The United States, account for 1 billion pounds of solid waste, thrown away everyday. Manufacturers package products in excessive packaging. Solid waste such as tires, diapers and plastics are buried in landfills each year. It takes generations for them to decompose. Today, there are laws that penalize manufacturing plants that dispose hazardous wastes. These plants dump these hazardous materials in nearby woods or dump them into streams (this practice was common fifty years ago). We need rain forests for survival. Rain forests pump fresh oxygen into the atmosphere, protect soil from erosion and absorb carbon dioxide. Rain forests cover 4.5 billion acres and accounts for 7 percent of the earth's land. The Amazon in Brazil is the largest rain forest ( million acres). The fate of today's rain forest is in trouble. A process called deforestation is the leading problem. Deforestation is the process of cutting down forests to use the land for farming and grazing cattle. Farmers "slash and burn" forest turning them into desert land. Brazil promised to implement laws that were tougher to protect the Amazon. These laws cut deforestation in half. By 14, the burning started again and in 16 the burning was at it's worst. The ozone layer blocks harmful ultraviolet rays, that comes from the sun. Chemicals released from the earth are depleting the ozone layer. Skin cancer is on the rise as a result of the depletion of the ozone layer. Scientist states that every 1 percent of depletion of the ozone layer, the rate of skin cancer will rise 5 percent in the United States. Nations have come together and promised to ban the manufacturing of chlorofluoro-carbons (CFCs). These CFCs are the leading cause of the depletion of the ozone layer. Aerosol spray cans and coolants for refrigerators and air conditioners are some products, which produce CFCs. Over population affects the natural environment. In 16, the population was at 5.75 billion people, with a rate of 50,000-increase everyday. As the population increase, the earth's natural resources decrease. In order to decrease population, some countries are educating people on different ways of birth control. Some countries are taking extreme measures, by cutting off any type of government assistance, for having over a certain amount of children. Biologists have discovered that the extinction of a species in an ecosystem (lake, forest, ocean, or a swamp) can cause the destruction of that ecosystem. In 1, 158 countries signed a treaty in order to protect biodiversity. All of the countries had to conduct a census of all the endanger species, ban the trade of endangered species and pass a law to protect the species. We as a whole need to realize the earth is in trouble. A lot is being done, but not enough. As countries become industrialized, it pushes the earth to the point of breakdown. Educational programs need to be implemented on ways to better the earth.

Happy Birthday¡K

Statement of intention

This piece is based on a personal experience that happened to a friend of mine, and affected him for life. Every now and then I would find myself rather lucky as such tragic happened to a young man. Hoping the audience will learn a lesson and cherish every aspect of life.

Birthday¡KThis word has no meaning to me any more. For many people birthday is an event with happiness brought to them. A date which they feel special about and a time with family and friends, celebrating another year has past for that special someone. But that meaning has abandoned me since my sixteenth birthday, leaving me with hatred and loneliness in my inner heart.

Custom writing service can write essays on Happy Birthday

There was seven more days till my sixteenth birthday. I couldn¡¦t wait. I had always wanted to have a birthday party, inviting everyone I felt comfortable with. My parents had arranged a party room held in a fancy restaurant down the road from my house. Invitations were sent out personally to each and everyone one. Watching the days go past slowly like the leaves falling from a tree, the date finally arrived.

The air in the morning smelt so fresh filling my lungs which gave me sensation. The sun was red for the first time in my childhood; it was trying to tell me that something was going to happen. Without any concerns I wore on a bright yellow shirt as I was the main star for today. Putting my trousers on tightly, tucking in the shirt and wearing a nice black pair of polished shoes. I was ready to set off for the time of my life. In fact I was a little nervous at the beginning, as this was my first party that I ever had, but once I stepped out the excitement had conquered the rest of my mind.

¡§Mum¡KDad¡K?¡¨ There was no answer, and without any surprise I knew they weren¡¦t at home. I searched the whole house, and found a message on the table. ¡§Dear, we will be back soon¡¨. I wasn¡¦t sure if they had forgotten about my sixteenth party, but if they did, I wouldn¡¦t talk to them in my entire life. The house was empty, just the four walls and me. It was midday, time for me to head towards the restaurant. The manager remembered my face, since I was with my parents booking the party room for today. She politely led me to the room, and here I sat waiting for all my friends to come. One by one they came, bringing me presents and money. I actually preferred the money, so then I could save it to buy something I actually wanted. Laughter filled the room. Everyone was having fun except for me. I just sat there still waiting for my parent¡¦s arrival. Minutes after minutes I waited impatiently, although friends and relatives didn¡¦t care, I still felt uncomfortable without my parents. I tried calling their phone however it was switched off. Now I was in an angry mood.

Suddenly, my phone started vibrating. It was a private number. ¡§Hello¡¨. I dropped the phone once the call had ended. My hand doesn¡¦t seem to function anymore. I was shocked, sweating from my forehead down to the neck. Everyone gathered around me ¡§Are you alright, what happened?¡¨ saying words that entered the left ear and exited on the right. I didn¡¦t get a word though my brain. I was that stunned. I finally managed to get a word out of my mouth ¡§Hospital, can someone please take me to the hospital?¡¨. One of the elders drove me their straight away, as they knew there was something terrible happened. During the trip I was just hopping god would be on my side for this time. God was the only one that was superior enough to satisfy my birthday wish.

As soon as the car was settled, I bolted to the receptionist asking which room was my parents in. Room 160 was where they were. It was up the stairs. The room was in front on my eyes, my heart pounding like there was no tomorrow. The doctor had just come out, with his face down walking very slowly towards me saying only four words ¡§Sorry, tried my best¡¨. These words immediately slowed my pulse. I walked in the room, tears running down my cheek. Holding on both my parent¡¦s hands ¡§Mum, dad I am here¡¨. In a very faint voice my mum answered ¡§Sorry we were late dear, your present is in the car¡¨ ¡§Happy birthday¡¨ whispered my father. The last words had come from their mouths and they fell deep asleep and never woke up again. They were still caring about me till their last second.

Soon I realized that if it wasn¡¦t for my present, they didn¡¦t have to rush back to the restaurant causing such terrible accident. This was wrong, very wrong. I blamed myself for this and never could I release this knot from my heart.

Holden is by far the most complex character in the book. He serves three major purposes in the novel. Firstly, he stands as a critic of society, taking a stance against phoniness, hypocrisy, obscenity, and passiveness. Secondly, he is an adolescent, caught between the worlds of childhood and adulthood. In this position, he demonstrates the need for maturity as well as the need for honesty and integrity.

In relationship to the plot of the novel, Holden stands as a sort of anti-hero. He makes no large contributions to society, slays no dragons, and achieves no tangible goals. Instead, Holden can be seen as an existentialist hero. He gives himself the impossible task of fighting societys phoniness, and in the end commits himself to that task wholeheartedly.

Holden cannot help but feel isolated when he observes the football game, you were supposed to commit suicide or something if Old Pencey didn't win(p.). Not only does Holden feel isolated at the schools he has attended; he has this feeling when it comes to his family as well.

. Upon his return to New York City, Holden does not go home. Instead, he chooses to hide out from his family.

Holdens younger sister, Phoebe serves both as a representation of the virtues of childhood (honesty, openness) as well as an advisor to him.

. He is depressed when someone says good-luck because the statement implies that fortune supersedes human effort.

Holden's uncomfortable adolescence manages to encapsulate so many of the great questions and frustrations of humans from the beginning of time. How does one deal with the "phoniness" of the world, the "two-facedness" or the "stupidity" of those who seem to walk through the world without thinking, losing themselves in celebrities and fleeting good times? How can you walk around surrounded by the evil that man can commit? How does one deal with not being able to save everyone, and being often not even able to save oneself?

Holden fears change in maturity. He believes that being an adult is hard, however he tries to be an adult by going to the Lavender Room and wanting to loose his virginity. However, he doesn't succeed and doesn't fit in. When Holden and Maurice fought, Holden just broke down and cried. He couldn't handle the situation. That meant he wasn't ready for adulthood after all. After the fight, Holden felt lonely and depressed, he started talking to Allie believing that he was near. At that point he wanted to escape adulthood by committing suicide. He thought that once a person dies, he would never have to grow up, he would be carefree and remain in his original state.

Of all of the characters in The Catcher in the Rye, Phoebe ranks with Carl Luce and Mr. Spencer as one of the most mature and perceptive. She realizes that Holdens major problem is his overwhelmingly negative attitude toward everything and everyone around him and confronts him on this fault. When Holden talks with Phoebe, he once again reveals his hypocrisy. He laments that everyone at Pencey excluded Robert Ackley, yet Holden himself loathed Ackley, considering him boorish and obnoxious. Significantly, Holden has difficulty finding an answer to the question of what he actually likes. When he does think of a response to that question, his answers are both questionable and disturbing. That Holden appreciates the suicide of James Castle indicates his own emotional state and gives greater credence to earlier foreshadowing that Holden himself will attempt to kill himself. Holden attaches some sense of nobility to death, which he additionally shows through his idealization of Allie. This also relates to Holdens sentimental feelings about childhood. His dream of becoming a catcher in the rye shows that Holden has an affection for childhood. He wishes to save these children from danger so that they may frolic in the fields; one can interpret this as Holdens wish to save the children from the difficulties of adulthood.

Holden responds to Phoebes confrontation by preparing to leave the house. This continues a pattern for Holden he escapes responsibility, whether leaving a club early when he sees someone he dislikes or running away from boarding school. When Holden faces something that he dislikes, he cannot confront it; instead, he chooses to leave for another random destination, whether New England or Colorado.

The philosophes were an intellectual group of the eighteenth century Enlightenment. They believed that by applying rational thought to all things such as religion, politics, economics, science, nature, medicine, etc. that even the simplest minded people could understand the workings of all things. Philosophes focused on improving the world and enjoying their lives rather than focusing on the afterlife.

The main attitudes of the philosophes were that every human being was capable of thinking for himself, that he could understand the workings of all things by using reason, one of the philosophes favorite words and that there was an overall need for change. Everything in the world was subject to the rational, scientific way of thinking if only people would free themselves from the older traditions. In other words they wanted to change things for the better. One man, Montesquieu, sought for change in government. He was a French noble who wanted a separation of powers because he wanted the nobility to play an active role in the running of the government. He believed that monarchies, like the French government, were an awful way to run the government. He praised the English system of checks and balances and he often pushed the envelope when hinting that the French government should decentralize its political power. Even though many philosophes had different ideas on how to change things during the eighteenth century they all agreed on one thing, there was a definite need for change everywhere.

Philosophes held the belief that Newton's scientific methods could be used to understand the natural laws that govern all of aspects of human life. The philosophes called this the "science of man" also known as the social sciences. Some philosophes doubted this so-called "science." A leader and strong believer during the Enlightenment in this area was David Hume. In his book, Treatise on Human Nature, he argued that if one used common sense to reflect and observe human nature and society that a "science of man" was conceivable. Another social science that a major change in the way society viewed it was economics. The chief philosophe in this area was a Scot named Adam Smith, who outlined his views in The Wealth of Nations. Smith had three basic principles of economics. He believed that free trade was better than mercantilism with its high tariffs, that the labor of skilled craftsmen, farmers, etc was the true wealth of nation, not gold and silver, and that the government should not intervene in a country's economic affairs, known as laissez-faire, French for "let people do as they choose." Most philosophes agreed that by applying the scientific method to all aspects of the universe, nature, and society that they could understand the workings of these things.

Religions were highly praised and highly criticized by philosophes. There were a few hardcore believers, a few atheists but most philosophes practiced deism. Those who practiced deism believed that the world was a machine and God was a "mechanic" who created it and the universe. The man who championed deism was a man named Voltaire. Voltaire and many other philosophes believe that God had no direct involvement in the world and he had created and allowed to run by its own natural laws. Voltaire was also a strong believer in religious tolerance. He spent two years in England that allowed him to view the benefits of tolerance and then criticizing the absolutist regime in France that oppressed freedom of religion and thought. There was also a group that was opposite of Voltaire's thinking. The group's main contributor was Denis Diderot who was an atheist. He led a brutal attack on Christianity and deemed it was "fanatical and unreasonable." Christianity was still a dominant force in the eighteenth century, many philosophes remained Christians while they assaulted the Protestant and Catholic churches and many still let religion play and important part in their lives.

Custom Essays on Philosophes

The Enlightenment was a time for change and open expression of new ideas. It also was a time when implications of speaking out against old traditions were not sometimes thought about. If one spoke out against French absolutism such as Voltaire did and did not be careful of what they said they could be executed. Also the philosophes of the Enlightenment were unaware of the implications their works would lead to in today's modern world such as Adam Smith's work with economics, Diderot's work with the Encyclopedia, and Montesquieu's work with politics. If these great philosophes had not stepped up and expressed their new ideas and influenced the new rational way of thinking our world could be a very different place today.

Personal Biography (1)

My work experience in the Human Resources field started approximately 8 years ago. My first Human Resources position was at a company and my title was Human Resource Assistant. With that being my first opportunity in the HR field I learned as much as I could. There was constructive criticism but as in any job you need to take the criticism and try to figure out what it is that you need to do differently. While there I tried to learn as much as I could by asking questions and writing things down. I did this knowing that I would not be at this company for the rest of my life and I wanted to take whatever knowledge I had and apply it to any new job I would acquire.

Well that is exactly what happened a few years later I acquired a new job with more responsibilities. My new title was Human Resource Generalist. This was definitely an accomplishment of mine. I had been wanting more responsibilities and a new title to go with the knowledge I had instilled within myself. I had direction and motivation. I knew after being at this position for a few years that I again wanted to better myself but for my family because it was growing and I wanted the best for them. So I started looking and putting my resume out there..

Eventually I landed the job that I am at now. I am a Human Resource Manager. Here I truly learned the meaning of being a team player. I was given all the responsibilities that I had been wanting since I started in Human Resources. Now I know there is only a few more steps until I am on top. At this position I am able to hold Company parties and gatherings. I go to the Corporate meetings and they ask for my opinions and I in turn give them. My accomplishments with my job title thus far is my excelling in this field.

There are so many new techniques and developmental techniques that I would like to learn from my courses at the University to enhance my skills. I have learned alot while maintaining a full time job for the last eight years and the last four holding a full time job and full time classes at a College.

I have learned business strategies, how to be a team player and more helpful skills that I can and have used in my profession. When I started out on this path I had to learn very early on how to accept constructive criticism. It is important to know your flaws but when somebody else is able to point them out we have to learn how to deal with it and I would like to think that this is something that happens in every type of field in the workplace.

Another accomplishment of mine would be stress. I have learned how to deal with majority of stress in my life. I talk with my co-workers and superiors at the job. We relate constantly back and fourth. I have also learned how to leave work at work and not to bring it home because this is easily done. I am sure that there are still a few things that I can and should learn on this level as far as learning to cope and deal with stress. This is an accomplishment of mine.

English Review Fight Club

'This is you're life and it's ending one minute at a time.'

The psychological thriller Fight Club directed by David Fincher and starring Edward Norton and Brad Pitt delivers a blunt and powerful message about the human psyche. The director conveys this message using a variety of cinemographic features, which combine to give the audience a knockout film.

The movie opens with scenes of the inside of Jack's/ the narrator's brain (Norton's character remains unnamed throughout the film referring to himself as 'Jack' after reading magazine articles about organs which refer to themselves in the first person as 'Jack'). This more or less sums up what the movie is all about- the psyche of the young male mind. Jack is a 'recall analyst' who suffers from insomnia and gets his kicks out of ordering furniture from a catalogue for his apartment. He seeks refuge from his insomnia by going to support groups (which he doesn't need to go to) e.g. for testicular cancer and lymphoma. Enter Marla Singer (Helen Bonham Carter) she too does not need to go to any of these support groups, although she attends them (even the testicular cancer). He cannot stand her but at the same time loves her. So he takes a break from the support groups. When suddenly he meets someone who will change his life forever- enter Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), a charismatic soap salesman. He is the complete opposite of 'Jack', yet 'Jack' finds him interesting, like the person he dreams to be. Together they start 'Fight Club' a place where people who were 'seeking an identity' came to engage in the physical art of 'fighting'. However 'Fight Club' snowballs into something much bigger and the viewer is left floored with a twisted and brilliant ending.

Help with essay on English Review: Fight Club 'This is you're life and it's ending one minute at a time.'

The acting in this movie was superb Norton's delivery of his lines was excellent. At the beginning of the movie when 'Jack' is searching for a better life Norton sounded quiet, emotionless and depressed, his movements were also very robotic, because of his acting, it really makes you believe he had a dull boring life. Pitt's performance was also very effective, you could say that after he saw Norton's acting he just acted in the exact opposite way e.g. he spoke far more loudly, he moved around freely and he delivered his lines in a cool, calm and relaxed manner. As the only lead female actor in the movie Helen Bonham Carter too did a good job she was very emotional in her performance, this helped emphasise how she was confused by the way 'Jack' treated her, i.e. one minute he loved her, the next he hated her.

The changes in lighting and scenery in the movie were used well to emphasise and parallel the great changes 'Jack's' personality went through, e.g. at the beginning of the film when 'Jack' was a neat, tidy, good law-abiding citizen brighter lighting is used and he lives in a condo. However later in the film when his persona changes as a result of meeting Tyler dark lighting is used around him as it is with Tyler. He also moves into a broken down, ram-shackled, old house. This change in scenery emphasises the lack of order in his new life.

The dialogue of the movie is also top-notch, it shows how much 'Jack's' and Tyler's personalities contrast when they first meet e.g. This conversation

Jack Well, what do you want me to do hit you?

Tyler C'mon do me this one favour.

Jack Why?

Tyler I don't know why. Never been in a fight before. You?

Jack No, but that's a good thing.

For most of the movie Durden says and does strange, inexplicable things like above when he wants 'Jack' to hit him.

The one aspect of the movie, which may not have been completely up to standard, was the pace of the film. Fincher has attempted to keep the audience interested by making the pace of the film quite fast, however at times you may be left confused because you think you have missed something.

With all the aspects of a good movie including knockout performances from the actors, masterful use of scenery and lighting and an original story line this movie packs a powerful punch which will leave you shocked and dazed to the very end.

He met Patsy in 17 and considered her his Jackie Kennedy. At the time, he was divorced and failing in business. A year later, he married her. A year later, her father bailed him out of the failing business. That business, too, failed but apparently Don Paugh bailed him out again. This time, the company flourished. This time, the company merged and John became part of a bigger company, not his own man. He was on his way to the big corporate structure hed wanted to join in 17 when he failed to make it with AT&T.

Once he was there, success came rapidly. The man who couldnt make it on his own flourished once he hooked up with other people. Don Paugh was proud of the new company, calling it the Cadillac and Lincoln of the industry. Paugh was clearly an important part of the company, as far as John was concerned. Paugh always had work there and lived in Boulder away from his own family, as did John.

Patsy and her mother and sisters were apparently a drag on the company. Nedra, Pam and Polly were dumped and Patsy, a proven advertising manager (work she was doing when John met her), was kept out. Granted, Patsy was pregnant twice and had cancer. Granted also that she may not have wanted to work at Access Graphics (although she did at MicroSouth). She did, however, have nannies and she did supervise redecorating houses and Access Graphics offices, organize company luncheons (at least one of which was a major $0,000 production). She was instrumental in local charities and schools. She obviously had the skills and desire to work.

Ironically, Patsy functioned successfully on her own, managing two pregnancies and cancer, major house renovations and other projects. She was acknowledged as being very good at organizing people and events. John, however, was essentially a failure when he was on his own. (I use the word failure in view of the Ramseys own expressed point of view; money is obviously very important to them both. Many thousands of people are successful in their own small businesses, doing no better than John did with his. That is one difference I see in the Ramseys and the majority of people. Its not a bad difference, just one.) John was well-educated (arguably better educated than Patsy), had good credentials and background. He was a nice guy with a quiet demeanor that didnt fit in with the highly competitive management environment of major corporations, such as AT&T. John was quoted, after becoming successful with Access Graphics, as saying he would be comfortable living in a log cabin with little money. His background seems to confirm that.

Do my essay on The Talented Mr. Ramsey CHEAP !

In terms of financial success, the Paughs were a great influence on John Ramsey. Nedra and Patsy have obvious and vital ambition toward recognition on the world stage. John seemed to be satisfied being well-liked and successful in his own little world. The Paughs influenced him, apparently, to strive for more. Don Paugh financed him and followed him to the big company in the new city. Patsy made sure the city of Boulder knew who the Ramseys were (although probably only people who cared about Access Graphics, parties and pageants really knew about them).

But look what happened once John reached a peak

-- He became part of the cutthroat business world

-- He drove people out who didnt please him or didnt produce, in his view

-- His company far exceeded the company that gave him his chance

Its possible that John was embarrassed by her flamboyance, and yet was charmed at the same time. Its possible that Patsy was angered by his lack of flamboyance, yet comforted by his solid personality. This couple had been married for 11 years before the big money came to them (Access was probably bringing in a good income prior to the acquisition by CalComp/Lockheed but certainly not in the millions of dollars). Their relationship would have been well established by then. The influx of $8 million dollars plus must have had a serious impact on them, and not just in terms of what they could purchase. Suddenly, with good legal representation, either could live quite well without the other in case of divorce. As Patsy herself said recently, The almighty dollar does strange things to people.

.......

These peoples lives changed dramatically when the almighty dollar came into their lives. John stayed up late with a calculator in bed working out finances. Patsy traveled around with a six-year-old girl made up to look like a 0-year-old Las Vegas showgirl.

Then -- wham! The end of 16 was the end of that. John spent his money on lawyers and Patsy lost her showgirl. Life in Boulder by J.A. Ramsey

The Smell of Swamp Upon Me by Susan Bennett

I Smelt a Skank by Don Foster

Henderson is always contingent on other people. He is consistently trying to find an individual that he can confide all his thoughts to, someone he can rely on, someone he can feel affections for, someone he can not just call his friend but actually be his friend. All through the novel, Henderson has been searching for someone to be a person he can love.

In the very beginning, we are introduced to Frances. She and Henderson were married for twenty-two years. While he is married to her, he has an affair with Lily when he goes to America. There marriage ended and Henderson decides to marry Lily.

Lily becomes very much in love with Henderson the moment she saw him I believe Lily is just as much as a necessity to Henderson as he is to her. Throughout the novel, Henderson remembers very meticulous and minute reminiscences of Lily. Whether it's how she has lost her four upper incisors (page 8) or the time she was shopping and he remembered her wearing a hat and a white piqu dress, with white shows (page 10). When he sees her coming out of the taxi after a long time of not seeing her, he directly says, "Lily! How are you kid? Where did you come from (page 15)?" This quote really shows Henderson devotion and wanting of Lily. But after a while his needs aren't met and Lily is not good enough for him. He wants something else, but he does not know what. To find this, he decides to take a journey to Africa.

When Henderson decides to go to Africa, he travels there with Charlie, an old class friend. After only three weeks of being with Charlie, Henderson says to Charlie, "All I know is that this isn't the place for me (page 4)." Henderson did not feel that this was the place for him. He is convinced Charlie has changed and Henderson does not want to be with him anymore.

Custom Essays on Henderson

Right when Henderson is introduced to Romilayu, he begins to become fond of him. Romilayu is a hired native that is supposed to exhibit African villages to Henderson. Henderson has so much of a fondness for him, that he states his keenness of Romilayu bluntly by saying, "I had found the fellow I wanted, just the right man (page 44)." Soon after that he says, " I had great trust in Romilayu, the old fellow (page 45)." And almost immediately afterward he says, " To have found a man like Romilayu, who sensed what I was looking for, was a great piece of luck (page 45)." Even in the end of Henderson's journey, Henderson talks about the goodness of Romilayu. He says to him, "Romilayu, I'm learning more about your good points all the time (page 0)." I really believe that out of every individual, Romilayu is one of the closest to gaining Henderson's trust. The resistance of dependence demonstrates that even Romilayu isn't respectable enough to have all of Henderson's trust.

Henderson travels to a village where he meats Itelo. Itelo is a Prince that astoundingly, forms a friendship with Henderson by having a wrestling match amongst them. To make Itelo and the rest of his tribe exultant to him, Henderson decides to get rid of the frogs in the drinking water. When he bombs the water and accidentally fractures a wall that holds the water (water spills out), Henderson has to end his camaraderie with Itelo and leave the town.

After Itelo, Henderson meets a king named Dahfu. Instantly, Henderson falls in love with the king and he says, "I had an impulse to confide in him-that was how he made me feel, trusting (page 15)." Dahfu and Henderson share a bond like no other two people. Henderson talk about how he was taken with him. He even goes as far as saying how he adores him. This admiration is showed by him saying, "I was grateful to him, does this. I was his friend then. In fact, at this moment, I loved the guy (page 1)." Throughout his time with King Dahfu, all Henderson can talk about is how much he loves Dahfu. So when Henderson finally gives his heart to someone, he must have been crushed when Dahfu died. He even says, "I have a punchy hearts. It's had more beatings than it can take. They've kicked it around far too much (page 15). Dahfu was the only man that got to Henderson's heart and after Dahfu's death, Henderson says to Romilayu, "You see I'm beside myself (page 17). He was my friend."

After Dahfu's death, Henderson tells Romilayu, "We have to stick together." But as the days pass Romilayu asks Henderson, "You be my friend, sah (page 4)?" And when Henderson responds, all he can say is, "Yes, you're my friend. But what about Dahfu? Wasn't he my friend, too?" This illustrates that Dahfu was the only individual that Henderson could entrust.

The last person that we see Henderson being a companion to is a kid he meets on the plane. He tells the kid, "Im going to take a walk. Will you come with me?" This reveals that Henderon is still looking for the individual that he can give all his love nad thoughts to.

Earth art refers to movements of artists with wide ranging goals. All of their pieces were created in nature with materials such as stones, dirt, and leaves. Most of the works are sculptures but there are some paintings. The pieces show things like the slow process of erosion and the movement of planets, stars, or the sun. Earth art captures an artist's impression of nature. Rather than an exact duplicate of nature, the works are the artist's own interpretations of the essence of nature. The movement began to develop in the late 160's and early 170's

Earth art does not often have an exhibit like other paintings and smaller sculptures do. The formations of the works are sometimes thousands of feet in area and some are hundreds of miles in area. An example of the tremendous size of the sculptures is the work done by Robert Smithson, titles Spiral Jetty. It was completed in 170 and extended 1500 feet in the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Today it can only be witnessed by documentation.

One of the most gigantic earth art pieces is still under construction by James Turrell. Since 17 he has been sculpting a natural volcanic site titled Roden Crater. One way to look at it is a giant eye looking straight up into space. You could lie at the bottom of the eye and see only the sky, perfectly framed in the crater's rim with no structures or guided-tour audio to get in the way.

Earth art is a more hands on type of style. In order to get the full affect you have to physically stand or walk around the art. In some of the pieces you actually need to be in the art itself. It is ever-changing art work, both for the good and bad. The earth's natural erosion process corrupts the artwork over time. But a good part about the ever-changing nature of earth art is that you always find something new about the piece. I think that earth art is unique because it actually uses a large area of the earth to make a work of art. It is not just a picture or a small sculpture.

All myths have origins in what someone once deemed as the truth. They are usually dubbed myths after many years of either cultural change or intellectual change. Horatio Algers tale of Ragged Dick was very popular during its time and many people accepted his step by step method to success through hard work. However, most people today would agree success is not as easy to obtain as Alger describes. In fact, some describe Ragged Dick as socially destructive. Harlon Dalton, as an example, argues that Algers tale is actually destructive to American culture. Dalton asserts that the myth ignores race and thereby makes assumptions that are not true in todays society where minorities do not have the same opportunities as the majority. Unfortunately, Dalton is ignoring the underlying moral of Ragged Dick and is simply attacking what makes the story a myth. Ragged Dick is indeed a myth, but its message to the reader is one of the fruits that result from hard, honest work.

Daltons main argument is that Algers three basic messages are counterproductive to American Culture. He describes the …three basic messages (1) each of us is judged solely on her or his own merits; () we each have a fair opportunity to develop those merits; and () ultimately, merit will out. (0). Dalton then describes how different races are judged differently and the minority races are not only prejudiced against, but suppressed so that they do not have the same opportunities that white people do. This paper will not debate whether or not Daltons assertions of race are true, but Dalton does a relatively nice job of proving these messages are found in Ragged Dick. Unfortunately, it makes no difference whether Dalton is right or not. This paper will assume Dalton is correct about the three messages, but it makes no difference. Indeed, the falsity of these messages about personal merits proves Ragged Dick to be a myth. I agree that the tale is a myth in that no misfortunate kid on the street can have the stroke of luck Dick encounters simply because he is an honest, hard working child, but Daltons misconception lies in his ignoring the essential message from Algers tale.

If one ignores questions of race, gender, and political propriety from Ragged Dick, one simple overlapping message is clear throughout the entire novel. Hard, honest work will advance you in society, financially and personally. By financially, this means you will gain more money, increasing your general financial assets. By personal gains in society, this means hard, honest work will earn respect not only from others, but from yoursel f as well, living happier. Dalton ignores this message and focuses on minor messages of merit and whatnot. True, hard, honest work will not earn success for everyone as described exactly above, but this is what makes the story of Dick a myth. Dick literally goes from rags to riches simply because he is honest and works hard. Obviously, this is not going to happen to many people.

However, just because the extreme result will not occur does not make Algers novel harmful to society. Dalton asks (with obvious sarcasm), Does anyone, for example, honestly believe that any Supreme Court justice in recent memory was nominated solely on the basis of merit (however defined)? (). He is making the assertion that Algers idealistic world does not apply to todays reality. Indeed it does not, but what is wrong with bringing a little idealism into todays society? Dalton says this is harmful, but even he partially concedes, admitting …it can help to pull people in the direction they want to go (). However, once Dalton concedes this fact, he does not pursue its ramifications on his argument of Alger being destructive but instead goes on to his next objection.

Dalton continues in saying that Alger attempts to maintain the order of races in American society. Algers myth serves to maintain the racial pecking order (). He continues in asserting that The Alger myth encourages people to blink at the many barriers to racial equality… (). This statement is incorrect because people do not take the story for face value, they realize it is a myth and too idealistic. When the reader reads the scene in which Dick …no sooner saw the boy fall [in the water] than he resolved to rescue him (08), Dicks race is not called into question! If everyone acted as honestly and selflessly as Dick, what a wonderful society we would live in. But somehow Dalton sees this as harmful to society and strives to convince the reader Dicks selflessness encourages racism. Dalton ignores the one message of honesty, selflessness, and hard work by making general, mostly politically correct statements about Ragged Dick and applying them against American culture. Finally, Dalton ends his argument with a concluding criticism of Algers novel. Dalton believes Alger is saying …we live in a land of unlimited potential, but Dalton contradicts Alger, believing …we live today in an era of diminished possibilities (5). Again, Dalton is correct, but he is only re-affirming the fact that Ragged Dick is a myth, something most people agree on. True, the possibilities and the American Dream is not as prevalent as it may have been years ago, but this does not diminish Algers message. Dick lives his life working hard and honestly, selflessly giving to others. Sure, the results of his work may be extreme, but this does not lessen the good message Alger is portraying to his reader.

Horatio Algers Ragged Dick is the story of a young boy struggling to reach the top, obtaining riches through hard work and his selflessness toward others. Dalton argues that the novel is detrimental to society, but he is simply arguing over Alger vs. reality. Algers novel is indeed a myth in that Dick would need a lot of luck in reality to go from rags to riches as he does. However, Dicks good spirit, honesty, and selflessness are characteristics we all should strive to have. Dalton is ignoring these wonderful characteristics by putting Ragged Dick in politically correct terms. Forget the race issues; it is a tale, a myth, of hard work and decency in which a young boy is greatly rewarded for his kindness. There is nothing threatening society in a myth like that.

1.) Children learn to use oral and written language in similar ways.

The author states in Starting on the Write Foot, "Children learn to read and write in the same way they learn to speak. It is a natural and uneven process. It sometimes happens slowly and at other times in spurts and burst." (Butler, J. Liss, C. Sterner, P. (1) Pg.).

Children learn to use oral and written language in similar ways because they both develop progressively. Example babbles to develop to scribbles. As the oral language develops so does a child's writing. The next step in oral language is when they string along words. This similar process in writing is scribbling in a line. The next stage in oral language is when sounds have meaning. This is when sounds have meaning. This is similar to the way children use the sign concept in written language. When a child goes through the echolalia stage, repeat everything they hear, this is similar to the tracing stage that a child goes through in written language. Another stage that a child goes through in oral language is fluency. This is similar to conventional writing. Both oral and written language moves the whole to the part.

There are more ways that oral and written language are learned in similar Both are innate. Children have a natural curiosity. They want to learn and explore. They bother are a process that need to be moved through at your own pace. Parents need to model behavior. They also need to encourage and motivate the child. If they child is motivated then they will be able to explore without hesitation. They do not need to push the child into something that they are not ready for.

Help with essay on education

Another factor is experimental, trial, and error. A child's early writing is a perfect example of experimental writing. The child also experiments with oral language in a similar way. They both are experienced by doing. The best way for a child to speak and write is to practice. They learn oral and written language by using trail and error method. They need to be surrounded by print from the time that they are born. This helps them understand oral and written language from the beginning.

Written and oral language are both a complicated system. They both need to be learned with meaning intent. A child has to connect meaning to what they learn. You cannot just randomly label things. You have to label things that would be meaningful to a child. The something applies to oral language. A child need to learn thing that they understand and has some meaning to them.

#.) Because meaning is at the heart of all languages, insisting on accuracy at all stages in the writing process results in an emphasis away from meaning therefore, causing needless difficulties for young learners.

Children learn written language through use. They also learn in a meaning group. Children do not understand the functions of language until they connect meaning with them. They also learn language from their parents. The author states in Starting on the Write Foot, "Children imitate the reading and writing that adults do and practice it over and over. When children have enough time to explore, and play, they learn literacy." (Butler, J. Liss, C. Sterner, P. (1) Pg.). For example Katelin and I practice writing together. We write notes back and forth to each other, interactional function. I encourage her writing. She knows that I am not worried about whether or not her spelling is correct.

When children are learning to write don't encourage accuracy, this will distract them from wanting to learn. If they are frustrated they will not learn. The authors states in The Beginnings of Writing, "With any encouragement at all, most children will not hesitate to produce things that they call 'writing,' even if they have not been taught to spell words or even how to form letters." (Temple, C. Nathan, R. Temple, F. & Burris, N. (1) Pg. 8). It is important to allow children the opportunities and encouragement to engage in writing activities. Even if it is before handwriting and spelling instruction has occurred.

We need to also provide models for the children. Things that are meaningful. Label only thing that have meaning to the children. Children need to know that their writing is important. If something is meaningful to a child, even if the parents or teachers do not understand it, it holds meaning to the child. If something is meaningful to a child, even if the parents or teachers do not understand it, it holds meaning to the child.

Children use strategies for early writing. Some of these are tracing, coping, generating. These are an important process for children to go through. Copying allows children to correct their own writing. It also allows them to produce their own standard letter forms. Generating letters is what the child will gravitate towards.

In The Stranger, Albert Camus portrays Meursault, the books narrator and main character, as aloof, detached, and unemotional. He does not think much about events or their consequences, nor does he express much feeling in relationships or during emotional times. He displays an impassiveness throughout the book in his reactions to the people and events described in the book. After his mothers death he sheds no tears; seems to show no emotions. He displays limited feelings for his girlfriend, Marie Cardona, and shows no remorse at all for killing an Arab. His reactions to life and to people distances him from his emotions, positive or negative, and from intimate relationships with others, thus he is called by the books title, the stranger. While this behavior can be seen as a negative trait, there is a young woman who seems to want to have a relationship with Meursault and a neighbor who wants friendship. He seems content to be indifferent, possibly protected from pain by his indifference.

Meursault rarely shows any feeling when in situations which would, for most people, elicit strong emotions. Throughout the vigil, watching over his mothers dead body, and at her funeral, he never cries. He is, further, depicted enjoying a cup of coffee with milk during the vigil, and having a smoke with a caretaker at the nursing home in which his mother died. The following day, after his mothers funeral, he goes to the beach and meets a former colleague named Marie Cardona. They swim, go to a movie, and then spend the night together. Later in their relationship, Marie asks Meursault if he wants to marry her. He responds that it doesnt matter to him, and if she wants to get married, he would agree. She then asks him if he loves her. To that question he responds that he probably doesnt, and explains that marriage really isnt such a serious thing and doesnt require love. This reaction is fairly typical of Meursault as portrayed in the book. He appears to be casual and indifferent about life events. Nothing seems to be very significant to him. Later on in the book, after he kills an Arab, not once does he show any remorse or guilt for what he did. Did he really feel nothing? Camus seems to indicate that Meursault is almost oblivious and totally unruffled and untouched by events and people around him. He is unwilling to lie, during his trial, about killing the Arab. His reluctance to get involved in defending himself results in a verdict of death by guillotine. Had Meursault been engaged in his defense, explaining his actions, he might have been set free.

Meursaults unresponsive behavior, distant from any apparent emotions, is probably reinforced by the despair which he sees open and feeling individuals experience. He observes, for example, Raymond cheated on and hurt by a girlfriend, and sees his other neighbor, Salamano, very depressed when he loses a dear companion, his dog. Meursaults responses are very different, he doesnt get depressed at death nor does he get emotionally involved. He appears to be totally apathetic. Thus, he seems to feel no pain and is protected from lifes disappointments.

Sometimes a person like Meursault can be appealing to others because he is so non-judgmental and uncritical, probably a result of indifference rather than sympathetic feelings. His limited involvement might attract some people because an end result of his distance is a sort of acceptance of others, thus he is not a threat to their egos. Raymond Sintes, a neighbor who is a pimp, seems to feel comfortable with Meursault. Sintes does not have to justify himself because Meursault doesnt comment on how Sintes makes money or how he chooses to live his life. Even though Meursault shows no strong emotions or deep affection, Marie, his girlfriend, is still attracted and interested in him. She is aware of, possibly even fascinated by, his indifference. Despite the seemingly negative qualities of this unemotional man, people nevertheless seem to care for him.

There are individuals who, because of different or strange behavior, might be outcasts of society, but find, in spite of or because of their unconventional behavior, that there are some people who want to be a part of their lives. Meursault, an asocial person is such an individual. His behavior, while not antagonistic or truly antisocial, is distant, yet it does not get in the way of certain relationships. While there are some people who might find such relationships unsatisfying and limited, Meursault and those he is connected to seem to be content with their friendships. His aloofness, though, may not have saved him from suffering. It might actually have been the cause of the guilty verdict at his trial for killing the Arab. Withdrawing from involvement with people or life events might not mean total isolation or rejection but it does not necessarily protect an individual from pain or a bad end.

In the United States there is a major controversy about the legal drinking. In 186

Congress passed the law that all states must have the minimum drinking age from eighteen years

old to twenty-one years of age (Hyde and Setaro ). Many people believe that the legal drinking

age should be lowered to eighteen years of age. Others, insist on keeping the legal drinking age at

Order Custom Drinking Age paper

a minimum of twenty-one years old. The drinking age should not be lowered to eighteen years old

because the teenagers performance in school will decrease, younger teenagers are more inclined

to experiment drinking, and by keeping the minimum drinking age to twenty-one decreases the

number of crime and drug use.

First, if the age of drinking alcohol is lowered to a younger age the teenagers performance

in school will decrease. By lowering the age most teenagers will begin to suffer from alcohol

related problems. Over a period of time the drinking of alcohol will interfere with them

academically and psychologically (Hyde and Setaro 4). Students will start to slack off and not care

about their responsibility in going to school and doing their school work. The teenagers grades will

begin to decrease drastically and the student's image of college will also decline (Hyde and Setaro

4).

Second of all, many researchers believe that by lowering the age to eighteen years old,

alcohol will be highly available to even younger teenagers. The behavior of an eighteen year old is

usually very influential on younger teens from 15-17 years of age (Hyde and Setaro 5). Younger

teenagers tend to mimic the behavior of a person who is near their age opposed to someone who

much older than they are ( Hyde and Setaro 5). Therefore, an eighteen year olds younger siblings

or peers will drink too. Research has found that the lower the age of drinking the more greater

the chance that a teenager will acquire a drinking disorder in the future (Hyde and Setaro 4).

Alcohol and Health reports,

" During the transition years between adolescence and young adulthood

there appears to be little continuity in drinking behavior, and drinking level

tend to decline substantially by age thirty " (Vogler and Bartz ).

Finally, a problem with teenagers is that they have not yet fully matured and not able to

have good judgment, even when sober. Alcohol causes a persons judgment to become even worse

(Vogler and Bartz 8). Jim Hall, Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, agrees with

the legal drinking age at twenty-one and states, "State age-1 laws are one of the most effective

public policies ever implemented to the Nation..." (Jim Hall 4). At the age of eighteen, most

teenagers believe that that's the age of maturing and independence. When having an alcohol

beverage in their hands they believe that they can do what they please because of the fact that at

their age they are now "independent." Studies have shown that the manner of drinking at a

certain age will be much different than at a later age because of the lack of maturity (Vogler and

Bartz ). Usually teenagers are more active and daring than most adults and are easily prone to

accidents (Vogler and Bartz 8). By increasing the age to 1 years old it has decreased the number

of drunk driving and fatal accidents. Another concern of teenagers is how alcohol has a close

association to drugs and usually when someone drinks, illegal drugs, such as marijuana, are

associated (O'Malley and Johnson 85-). Also, when the legal drinking age was increased, the

number of arrest called DUI (driving under the influence) reduced (Hyde and Setaro 5).

As stated above, the drinking age should not be lowered to eighteen years old, but should

be kept at a minimum drinking age of 1 years old. This is because the performance of the

teenagers will decrease in school, much younger teenagers are inclined to experiment drinking

alcohol at a younger age, and by having the minimum drink age at 1 years old it reduces the

number crime and drug usage. Most importantly, the teenager's grades will decrease and the

academic work will not be done. Also, alcohol will be more available to much younger teenagers

because of their older siblings or friends. The younger the drinking age the greater the chance is

for a teenager to acquire a drinking disorder in the future. Lastly, because teenagers have not yet

fully matured and tend to have bad judgment, the legal drinking age was made 1 years old. By

increasing the age, it lowered the number of arrest, illegal drugs such as marijuana, fatal accidents

and crime. In conclusion, it is essential that the drinking age should not be lowered to a younger

age. Teenagers are not reliable enough to make their own decision in this situation, therefore,

someone should make it for them until they reach a reasonable age.
