According to the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language fourth edition, published by Houghton Mifflin Company 000, the definition of ¡°Consumerism¡± is;

1. The movement seeking to protect and inform consumers by requiring such practices as honest packaging and advertising product guarantees and improved safety standards.

. The theory that a progressively greater consumption of goods is economically beneficial.

. Attachment to materialistic values or possessions deplored the rampant consumerism of contemporary society. The first two meaning is the ideal meaning of consumerism which expresses the positive aspects, however the third meaning of consumerism parallels to the poems of Bruce Dawe in this anthology.

Consumerism allows the society to gather new information. The television is the most dominant force of medium that enables the information exchange to happen. It also incorporates advertisements that allow consumerism to thrive. The radio is another medium that provides information to consumers. It appeals to the hearing senses of the consumers to send the message across. The internet is another powerful medium that gives latest and fastest information to people. Thus the above factors help contribute the positive aspects of consumerism and it corresponds with the first two definitions of consumerism.

Consumerism helps our society to become more convenient through advertisements. Advertisements convey information to people that could help the society to become more convenient and also help the economy. The advertisements such as showing a suffering people in the world which evokes sympathy and lead them to donating certain amount of funds is an example. Another advertisement could be a car advertisement. It shows the functions and features of cars very well, so that it resolves people's hesitations. Therefore it can be seen, that by helping the suffering people and resolving the hesitation, consumerism can be a positive to the society.

Contrastingly, consumerism also has negative aspects as outlined by Dawe's poetry compiled in this anthology. His common theme of consumerism, emphasizes the negative effects it has on people. Factors such as loss of innocence, loss of personal values, materialism and conformity contribute to this feeling.

Consumerism leads, to loss of innocence of people. As a reference the poem ¡°Breakthrough¡± shows a little girl ¡°died happily in hospital singing an advertising commercial.¡± This shows that even at death, consumerism plays a big part in a person's life. ¡°Enter without so much as knocking¡± shows the loss of innocence of individuals. As people grow up they become ¡°realistic like every other godless, money-hungry, back-stabbing miserable so-and-so¡± this means that as time progresses people's innocence's becomes obsolete. Moreover in the poem ¡°The not-so-good earth¡± shows the loss of innocence in Western people lives through the TV advertisements ¡°he saw that better than anything, using the contrast knob to bring them up dark-all those screaming faces and bodies going under the horses-he did a terrific job on that bit.¡± This shows that Western people have become desensitizes to seeing other people's tragedy on TV. Instead of having sympathy they become more sarcastic about the advertisements. Thus showing the loss of innocence in people lives.

People lose their personal value due to consumerism. In ¡°Breakthrough¡± it reveals the loss of personal value by starting ¡°Full volume up on the celestial choir! Stand by for action,¡± which evokes the feeling of sarcasm on little girl's death. Thus emphasizing the loss of personal value. It shows the sarcasm of the poem because people normally sympathize one's death, however this poem makes the little girl's death and her ascension into heaven as if it was a scene from a Hollywood production. This devalues one's worth and the commercialism and in turn the influence of consumerism is revealed. Also in ¡°Enter without so much as knocking,¡± shows the devalued family life ¡°A year or two to settle in and get acquainted with the set-up¡± shows that the family life is like a ¡°set-up¡± which seems superficial. Moreover, ¡°this included one economy size mum, one Anthony Squires Coolstream summerweight dad,¡± shows that mum is a good value for money and dad is like a model for a men's wear Anthony Squires. Therefore this signifies loss of personal values within families because of the ¡°set-up¡± like nature and being influenced prominently by consumerism.

Materialism is another component that arises within the consumerism. The poem ¡°Abandonment of Autos¡± shows the materialism of a car owner who disposes of his old car in order to get a new one because ¡°the idea¡± of possibly buying a new car ¡°appeals¡± to him. People just throw away their material belongings even though they can still be used, because they feel as through they must have a new one due to the influence of consumerism. Also in ¡°Televistas¡± it shows the materialism life between young man and woman. They fall in love while watching a TV show and have an incident because of choosing a TV channel. ¡°Their first falling-out took place over candid camera¡± and also they ¡°reconciliate¡± by the ¡°cheezels¡± which shows that peoples live revolve around commercials and its products. Moreover, the superficiality of their lives are emphasized by their materialistic nature.

People lose their individuality due to consumerism. In ¡°Enter without so much as knocking¡± it shows the conformity of a society is restricted by orders such as ¡°WALK. DON'T WALK. TURN LEFT. NO PARKING¡± thus showing a hectic life style of people in today's society. People intend to follow their own individuality, however the commercialized society made people conform with others. This is inevitable because whole world is surrounded by a consumerism. Also in ¡°Americanized¡± it shows the conformity that she is not influenced by the Americanization and she wants to protect her son from it by ¡°not allow him out¡± as ¡°the streets are full of nasty cars and men.¡± Although the boy is exposed to consumerism what one does not know cannot harm them and the ¡°pepsi-cola figurines¡± is the proof. However, the mother when she returns from the outside is overcome by consumerism from the outside world and has conformed with the rest of the society. This ¡°frightening fact¡± is a reality and individualism seems to have no room to coexist with consumerism.

Therefore it can be seen that consumerism has good aspects such as achieving new information, helping society through advertisement and because of this economic can be increased in society. Through TV, radio and internet people achieve latest and fastest information. Also for Bruce Dawe's consumerism there are negative aspects such as loss of innocence, loss of personal values, materialism and conformity. These are driven by hectic life styles that consumerism creates and people's lives revolve around it. Therefore it can be seen that negatives outweigh the positives with consumerism that is further supported by the Anthology of Dawe's poetry.

"I pledge allegiance to my Flag and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."The Original Pledge of Allegiance recited by Twelve million school children on October 1th, 18

The Pledge of Allegiance a tradition, an honor, and a national pastime. The Pledge has been recited in public for over 100 years. It has also been changed numerous times. Most notable change was in 154, which admitted the words "under God" to the Pledge. These words were deliberated recently in the th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The court made a startling decision it said that the words must be removed from the Pledge of Allegiance because they are an unconstitutional "endorsement of religion."

Now are they unconstitutional or not? Should this decision be upheld or overturned? I say we should work to overturn this outrageous ruling! As Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle put it, "This is just nuts!" If we remove this portion of the Pledge of Allegiance, do we then have to remove "In God We Trust" from our currency, and would we have to stop the Supreme Court from opening its sessions with, "God save the United States and this honorable court", and would we have to declare that our own Constitution is unconstitutional because it mentions God or the creator four different times! I think not!

Honestly I believe the two judges that voted to remove "under God" from the Pledge, are just trying to get attention on the national scene. The one dissenting vote from the court, Circuit Judge Ferdinand F. Fernandez, stated on his colleague's decision, "we will soon find ourselves prohibited from using our album of patriotic songs in many public settings.

If this ruling is upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court, our country will go through one of the largest governmental revolutions in history for we will have to re- write many portions of our government that have been the same for years. I believe "under God" must be kept in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Country Pleasures, by Billy Lee Brammer, focuses on a connection between the worlds of Hollywood and politics, starring Vicki McGown. Vicki is a famous actress who revels in her stardom, and subsequently enjoys its perks. At the same time, she is a wife and mother who struggles in the less glamorous roles. She is manipulative, dangerously fun, and dedicated to her work.

Vicki's manipulative nature come out in her interactions with her husband, Jay McGown, concerning his desire for a divorce as wells as for their daughter to live with him. She wants Jay to leave his life and job behind so that he can join his wife and daughter in their travels; however she has no intention of remaining loyal to Jay. The first tactic she uses is seduction by undressing in front of Jay, after inviting him to her dressing room, upon his group's arrival to the set. Her other manipulative maneuvers included playing the victim and trying to convince Jay that he would be happier with her plan.

Arthur Fenstemaker is the prime example to illustrate the result of Vicki's captivating lifestyle. Just as other stars in the movie making business, Vicki enjoys a good party, consequently, she brings her friends along who are not prepared for the result. Fenstemaker is mesmerized by Vicki and falls victim to her way of life; furthermore, he looses control of himself and his leadership position, and is tempted to the point of adultery. Vicki is intoxicating and most everyone can be convinced to stick around to see what is next with her.

In every aspect, Vicki is dedicated to her work; even to a fault. For instance, when it appeared that she had been with the governor on the night he died, she begged Jay to remove her belongings. She did not want to get bad press and be thought responsible for Fenstemaker's moral quandaries and most of all his death. Also, she is willing to give her family up in order to pursue her career. Eventually, she gives in to Jay and agrees to sign divorce papers as well as give him custody of their daughter. For women, acting careers did not last long; therefore, she is prepared to do anything to remain in demand.

Joseph Barnett (1858-16)

This is my favourite suspect candidate, the one I personally believe to be the famous Jack the

Ripper. The facts speak for themselves; Joseph matches Jack the Ripper in many ways, in such a

way that it is unbelievable. There is only one matter that disturbs me in the compatibility of the

Custom writing service can write essays on jack the ripper

Ripper and Joseph Barnett. This will all come up in the following.

Joseph grew up in a poor family, only a mile away from the Whitechapel district. His father was a

fish porter, he died when Joseph was six years old. His mother deserted the family soon afterwards.

Joseph grew up with his siblings and became a fish porter. Eventually he met Mary Jane Kelly and

they got married. Joseph knew that Mary was a prostitute, but accepted it. He tried to keep Mary off

the streets by earning enough money from his own businesses. In June, Joseph lost his license as a

fish porter, before the killings in August. After this Mary had to return to the streets to earn the

family a living. Joseph couldn't take this, and so he decided to kill some whores to scare his

beloved away from the streets. But this didn't work out and by that time Joseph had realized that his

love had run dry and so he slaughtered his beloved in a scorned frenzy. Joseph's physical

description matches exceptionally well with that of many of the witnesses; height 5' 7", age 0,

medium built, a moustache and a fair complexion. The fact that he was linked with Mary could

explain the fact that the killings stopped after she was murdered. There were ginger beer bottles at

1 Miller's Court on November th , referring to the "Dear Boss" letter, where it says, "saved some

of the proper red stuff in a ginger beer bottle over the last job to write with…" Mary Kelly's

house's door was locked when they found her body. The fact that Joseph most likely owned a set of

keys into the apartment indicates that he must have been the last person to leave the apartment. It

could of course be that Joseph killed his wife out of other reasons unapparent to us and decided to

make the murder look like it was done by Jack the Ripper. There is one more point that backs up the

theory that Joseph was guilty for the murders, He matches the F.B.I.'s psychological profile for

Jack the Ripper(below). This answers the question I put out for myself in the beginning of the

thesis.

The Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius and the Equestrian Monument to Bernado Visconti are two works of art that at a cursory glimpse, look so parallel, both have powerful men on horses, thus equestrian. But each sculpture embodies a polar opposite man at unrelated times in history. A statesman of conflict verses a statesman of peace, a loved head of state as opposed to a detested head of state. One monument sponsored by affectionate supporters after death while the other by money levied by unhappy citizens during the lord's lifetime.

An enormous mission faced Marcus Aurelius when he became the Roman emperor in 161 AD. Generations of extravagance had made the nobles, weak and selfish. The middle class was vanishing, and the working class was being reduced to a state of slavery. Germanic tribes were at the borders of the empire, while few Romans seemed willing to defend their homeland. Marcus Aurelius had been trained in the Greek philosophy, and he followed it throughout his life. He placed the good of society before his own comfort. He put good government into effect, limited the gladiatorial games, and passed laws that benefited slaves. Although he loved peace, he was a good warrior and succeeded in defending the border provinces against invasion. In his spare moments he jotted down in Greek the rules that guided his own conduct. The resulting volume of Meditations was for many generations one of the worlds most accepted books of practical and political wisdom. Marcus Aurelius spent most of his reign on foreign battlefields, trying to defend the frontiers of the Empire. He eventually died while on campaign in 180 AD in the town that became Vienna. (McKay Antiquity to Enlightenment)

A type of imperil portrait invented by the Romans is the equestrian monument meaning, depicted or represented on horseback. The bronze statue of the emperor Marcus Aurelius on horseback standing on the pedestal in the center of the Campidoglio is an excellent fake erected in 17 in preparation for Jubilee 000. The original, which had stood on the Campidoglio since 158, survived a 17 bomb attack, but was then discovered to be deteriorating rapidly from atmospheric pollution. It was carefully restored between 181 and 18 and is now kept under a glass cover in the Capitoline Museum .Twice life-size and originally gilded to look like solid gold; the statue may have been produced after the emperors death in 180AD, when he was deified. Michelangelo moved the original to the Campidoglio in 158 from a position near St John Lateran where it had stood since at least the eighth century. It was then believed to represent Constantine, and that misidentification probably saved the statue from papal melting pots, which consumed statues of so many non-Christian emperors and generals. In later years it was also misidentified as the Roman knight Marcus Curtis, who had saved Rome from destruction by leaping on horseback into an abyss which had opened in the center of the Forum in the time of the ancient kings. Later still, it was identified as Theodoric the Great, the Ostrogoth king. It was only in the fifteenth century that portraits on old coins pointed to the true identity of the man on horseback (Buckler Rise of Rome)

The equestrian tomb of Bernabo Visconti, Lord of Milan sat behind the high altar of the now demolished S. Giovanni in Conca in Milan. The monument is made of marble, and the rider figure was at one point covered in silver and had a golden shield and spurs, these attachments are indigenous of northern Monuments. As a result of his unexpected death the work was never completed. Given that it was being commissioned by Visconti

Bernabo Visconti was an iron-fisted tyrant from Milan; he married Regina Della Scala of Verona which forged both a political and aesthetic alliance between the two cities. Viscontis intrigues and territorial ambitions kept him at war with Florence, Venice, and even the Pope. Sir Bernabo heavily oppressed that part of Lombardy of which he was head of state, and taxed his citizens two or three times a-year, a half or a third of their income; but none dared to speak out against him. Being at war continuously with several neighboring countries and taxing his citizens heavily to finance these military explorations, Sir Bernabo was detested from all angles. While riding from one town to another, considering himself perfectly safe, the lord entered an ambush, men advanced toward the tyrant, instantly capturing him. Sir Bernabo was made prisoner without any defense made by his attendants, and carried to a castle where his nephew was, who much rejoiced his arrival. That same day, Visconti's wife and children were also arrested, and confined by the lord of Milan's nephew, who took possession of all the lordships, castles, towns, and cities which Sir Bernabo held in Lombardy. Visconti died shortly after his incarceration, rumored to have been bled form the neck. News of this was soon spread abroad some were pleased at it, others irritated; for Sir Bernabo had in his time done so many acts of cruelty without reason, that few pitied him, saying, he had well deserved it. (Hill Life in European Middle Ages)

The equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius was sculpted in 165 A.D. while the monument to Bernabo Visconti was formed between the years 16 to 185. Two works of sculpture with striking similarities erected in different ages, early Roman and Medieval. Both show men of power and conquest on horseback. The largest factor to consider is the status of these two statesmen, while Visconti was powerful; he was equivalent to a mayor today as opposed to the president or emperor Marcus Aurelius, which is evident by the use of marble covered by bronze and gold in Visconti's tomb, and the use of solid bronze in the emperor's statue. The emperor's statue aimed to embody both a warrior and the philosopher. The beard illustrates the Greek fashion set by Hadrian and signifies that he is a philosopher, whereas the toga is representative of a military combatant, the absence of reins on the horse signify that he will no prematurely enter in to violent conflicts. His right arm outstretched in a gesture of clemency. Under the raised right hoof of the horse there was once a small figure of a kneeling barbarian. The Monument to Visconti is a sarcophagus tomb, the rider atop, is wearing a knight's armor to indicate all of Visconti military triumph, there is no fluidity by either the horse or the knight. A scene of the crucified Jesus is also present to denote the monarch divinity status of Visconti.

"The Perfect Storm"

In the movie The Perfect Storm, based on a true story, the six-man crew of the boat Andrea Gail departed from Glocester, Massachusettes in the Fall of 11 and headed for the fishing grounds of the North Atlantic. Two weeks after their departure, an event took place which had never occurred in recorded history a convergence of a thunderstorm and a hurricane. The clash of these two mighty forces created the most powerful storm in modern history.

Cheap Custom Essays on History of the Sea

With extreme high winds and waves the height of skyscrapers, the Andrea Gail was pushed about like a toy in a bathtub. The picture you have in your bulletin is from the movie The Perfect Storm and depicts the captain of the Andrea Gail hanging on for dear life during the tempest. Sadly, the Andrea Gail and her crew were swallowed up by this perfect storm.

I read up on hurricanes this week. These are powerful, whirling storms that measure some 00 to 00 miles in diameter and have wind speeds up to 140 mph (5 kph) as well as heavy torrential rains.1

I actually logged onto a web site created by a former hurricane hunter named Scott A. Dommin. Scott was a navigator on a WC-10 Hercules aircraft and flew many missions through hurricanes recording weather data. His web site carried a number of incredible hurricane photos. I was filled with awe and amazement at the power of these storms. His work was not for the faint of heart. I can't begin to imagine what the crew of the Andrea Gail must have felt as they fought to keep their vessel afloat in such a storm.

Have you ever noticed that life is often like a hurricane; full of experiences that feel like extreme winds blowing you this way and that, high waves like rolling emotions that make it hard to catch your breath and thunderous clashes of sight and sound like relationship conflicts which keep you from any sense of peace?

I've been there and frankly, so have most of you. Perhaps you are in the midst of a personal storm today. Is there peace for a person even in the midst of such a tumult?

This morning we lit the fourth Advent candle; the Angel's Candle symbolizes peace. In the midst of so much "un-peace" between nations, neighbours, next-of-kin and even in our own hearts, we need a message of peace, not just any old peace but divine peace. Allow me to first tell you another story about a storm that happened 000 years ago.

THE moving sun-shapes on the spray,

The sparkles where the brook was flowing,

Pink faces, plightings, moonlit May,-

These were the things we wished would stay;

Help with essay on 12

But they were going. That Time Of Year Thou Myst In Me Behold

William Shakespeare uses many metaphors, he uses them to express his messages

to his audience. William Shakespeare expresses his feelings of getting closer to death by

comparing life to seasons, fire, and the cycle of day. He uses fire and man as his

mataphor. The cycle of fire, is where he compares fire, and life. He says, In me thou

seest the glowing of such fire. (Line ) That Time Of Year Thou Myst In Me Behold is also

expressing his feelings to someone. William Shakespeare made this poem for a duke.

William uses many metaphors in, That Time Of Year Thou Myst In Me to

express his feelings. The metaphors he uses in this poem he is trying to express his

feelings of getting closer to death by comparing lifeto seasons, fire, and the cycle of

day. Those are the three major metaphors he uses in this poem. The first metaphor is,

Upon those boughs which shake against the cold, . . . (line -4) In this metaphor he is

comparing life to fall. Life is the bough and cold is fall. Life is aslo comparing itself to

the sunset. Life, and the sunset both has an end to it. Life grows darker, and the sunset

also grows darker at some point.

Fire is also one of the main metaphors William Shakespeare uses to compare life

too. He says, In me thou seest the glowing of such fire. (LI ) The cycle of fire is like

life. Fire and man needs something to survive there both the same. Fire needs fuel, all

man kind needs food. First Life begins by birth, and fire begins by smoke. We begin to

grow like burning flames. Then we begin to glow meaning were getting old.

Sooner or later we begin to fade away.

That Time Of Year Thou Mayst In Me Behold, William Shakespeare is

expressing his feelings to a duke while he is slowly dying. William Shakespeare is telling

the audience life expires at a point of time. At the age he is probably in his old age

because of all the metaphors he uses. Fall and sunset is the meaning of old age. He has no

youth in him. He compares his life to fall.

William Shakespeare as you can see he uses many of his metaphors in this poem.

His expression towards life is where the metaphors come in. I believe hes telling us how

life goes by fast, and we all sooner or later fade away like a fire.

In a society surrounded by somebody's and nobody's old money and new money people are not who they seem. Jay Gatsby was genuine to the eye, but beneath the surface he was as fake as those around him. Driven by a woman whose voice was filled with money Gatsby had come to the conclusion that he was nobody without a history and money. Jay Gatsby born James Gatz created himself long before"when he saw Dan Cody's yacht drop anchor over the moist insidious flat on Lake Superior and the truth was, Jay Gatsby, of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his Platonic conception of himself…and to his conception he was faithful to the end" (104.) Gatsby had become so obsessed with who he wanted to be that he forgot who he really was. Gatsby was no better than the people he wanted to become. He went from being somebody with a different story to becoming one of the same old nobody's. Absorbed in the rich mans life he fancied his possessions too obviously with his flamboyant self. He was caught up in lies when he showed Nick his splendid home. He exclaims, "It took me just three years to earn the money that bought it"(5.) Though in previous visits he had exclaimed so cleverly how he had inherited his fortune.

Gatsby revalued everything in his house according to the measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyes. Sometimes, too, he stared around at his possessions in a dazed way as though in her actual and astounding presence none of it was any longer real (7.)

No man can be commended for being such a fool at a game played by his peers. Tom and Daisy were only two more imposters of many. In an idealistic world Gatsby should have been able to aspire to anything he deemed worthy, but in a superficial society as the one in the 0's that was not necessarily true. Gatsby realizes who he was under it all when he exclaims to Tom,

"She [Daisy] never loved you, do you hear? She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart she never loved anyone except me" (7.)

Though once again Gatsby was only kidding himself because what he had fallen in love with was a dream because what Daisy was really in love with was the artificial somebody nobody old money new money world. Gatsby was blinded by love and fortune when really he had it all to begin with. Now a days we say for richer or for poorer, but back then it was all about where you came from instead of who you could become, a game Gatsby fell a victim to.

In the business of hospitality, most importantly the food preparation side of things, it is of great importance that high standards are kept so that the quality of the product, and the reputation of the company in which the product represents is also maintained. It is often said that "Good food will sell itself" and I firmly believe in that philosophy. There are many meanings, or ways we can look at this saying, as it can mean the way the product looks, smells, feels, and how it sounds, not literally but by reading a menu or something of the sort.

Food is really a major part in our lives. Basically, if we didn't eat, we would die, however, food doesn't just serve as a source of energy, and nutrition. Food is something which we like to treat ourselves too, because we enjoy it, and the reason for this is because we like the way it tastes; our taste buds are very receptive to it. However, before we take a bite of something, we look at it, study it and hence determine weather we will eat it or not. If something looks average, or below standard, we tend to say "yuck, no thanks" and we don't eat it. If something looks ok, we tend to give it a try, and generally we are reasonably satisfied, but people don't look for mediocrity, if they pay for a product or a service, they demand high satisfaction.

If we try to separate the excellent from the mediocre, it can be just the minute things, but they make all the difference. Some examples of these small differences is the colour, texture, or even they way it is written on the menu. It is simple, if something looks good, smells good, feels good, sounds good, it probably is good. It's basic human nature, if something is attractive we want it! Food is also something which can class our social stature, as fine dining can give a stereotype that this person or persons is somewhat well off or high on the social ladder.

Food is important and is forefront in many peoples lives, people love the taste sensations it gives us and when we eat out we expect to be provided with a well presented, nice tasting meal. Food presentation is everything as we decide weather we eat the meal by the way it is presented. ' good sells itself" this is a very true statement and something that is of high importance in the hospitality business.

The Japanese Relocation order Executive Order 066

Japanese Americans, both first generation of Japanese in the U.S. and second generation of Japanese in America who were U.S. citizens by birthright, were evacuated from their homes after the empire of Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 141, which was said to be "a day we will live in infamy". On February 1, 14, the order was authorized by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who felt pressure from Lobbyists from western states who represented competing economic interests or nativist groups, and was acted upon on March 1, 14. In the next six months 1,000 men, women, and children were moved to the relocation centers by the U.S. Army because the Department of Justice representatives raised constitutional and ethical objections to this case. All Japanese-Americans who lived in California, Oregon and Washington were evacuated to relocation centers in the west except for Arkansas; Heart Mountain in Wyoming, Tule Lake and Manzanar in California, Topaz in Utah, Poston and Gila River in Arizona, Granada in Colorado, Minidoka in Idaho, and Jerome and Rowher Arkansas. There were no charges against these people; however, Americans were already envious of the Japanese-Americans economic success and distrusted their cultural separateness, so when the Japanese empire attacked Pearl Harbor it gave the U.S. an even better reason to not like and to later on get rid of the Japanese that lived on the West Coast. The U.S. was very frightful and would do anything they could to secure their country which is why the Japanese were sent to relocation centers. The government didn't view relocation centers as Internment camps or places of confinement, but instead were established so that evacuees could live and establish a home and find security and it also served as wartime home. However, many Japanese-Americans didn't believe this. One man who was in an internment camp said, "If this is supposed to be a place for security then why are men with guns on the inside rather than on the outside." The government assumed responsibility for those that were placed in these relocation camps and wanted to help them get back on their feet after they took them from their homes. So President Roosevelt issued the Civilian War Relocation Authority, which would assist in the relocation of any person who was forced to move by the army for military security. These relocation camps however where nowhere near what you would call home. A family of about five or six would live in a single barrack of about twenty to twenty-five feet. Inside the barracks were cots, blankets and small heating stoves. There wasn't any type of furniture or anything in the barracks that made the place look lively. A bathroom, a toilet, and laundry were available for each block of barracks, which was shared by about 50 people. Every day meals for each person were no more than 45 cents. Many of the Japanese-Americans by birthright who were called nisei, were still encouraged to serve in the armed forces, many were drafted. Over 0,000 Japanese-Americans served during WW II in segregated units. In December of 144, President Roosevelt canceled the executive order 066 and in six months the internees were released and all the camps were shut down. By 145 the war was over. After this event, many internees sought compensation for what they lost. As a result, The Japanese American Evacuation Claims Act of 148 and the amendments in 151 and 165, provided payments for what was lost. In 15 people who were born in Japan but now resided in the U.S. were able to become naturalized citizens. In the early 80's the Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians was established and as a result, Public Law 100-8, which spoke of the injustice of the internment, apologizing for it and providing restitution, was passed. Japanese-Americans who were placed in internment camps were given 0,000 each to suffice for what they faced.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson have been seen as the ultimate partners for as long as they have been in print. Their relationship is far deeper than anything that meets the eye; they mean more to each other than just a business partner or friend. Watson and Holmes complement each other; one looks with his eyes while the other looks with his mind. Watson is the practical, sensible professional man that looks at the big picture, while Holmes uses a combination of observation and deduction to solve sensational mysteries. Most readers analyze synthetically like Watson instead of analytically like Holmes. Knowing this, Doyle chose to write his stories from Watson's perspective to give his readers the sense of solving the mysteries themselves.

To tell the story from Holmes' perspective would completely alienate most of the readers Doyle is targeting. Most of the suspense in The Speckled Band comes from the excitement of finding out who the murderer is. Holmes' mind is too quick and would leave no suspense to hook in the reader. Moreover, it is much more enjoyable to the reader to see Holmes "arms folded, his hat pulled down over his eyes, and his chin sunk upon his breast, buried in thought" and imagine what fantastic deductions he is thinking about. Watson represents the common people, the ones who do not hold that peculiar talent his partner holds. Holmes is that one rare oddity that people are irresistibly drawn to, the one person that can bend steel bars yet reason through a case most others could not begin to fathom.

Readers can relate to Watson best because typically they think in a synthetic sort of manner. From a sequence of events, they can usually argue a result that comes to pass. However, very few people are capable of the opposite deducting the series of events that led up to a result. After hearing some of Holmes' arguments in the case in The Speckled Band after visiting Helen Stoner's room, Watson can see "nothing remarkable save the bell-rope". However, after Holmes describes his deductions Watson can "see dimly what you [Holmes] are hitting at. Only after Holmes basically lays out his entire reasoning and events does Watson, and subsequently the reader, begin to understand the case.

Article Summary

Sex in Literature

By C.S. Lewis

Sex in literature is a very common and debated topic in philosophy. Many philosophers question the different aspect of sex and literature and come up with different opinions on weather or not people should be subject to explicit sexual content in literature. C.S Lewis has very strong beliefs on the subjects and talks about them openly throughout the article Sex in Literature.

Lewis believes that our legal system is coming to a demise. He believes that jurors are no longer basing their decisions on the evidence that is presented in court but instead on their moral and ethical view on life. He states that in one case a young girl was caught stealing a handkerchief and the evidence proved she had done it but the jury felt sort for her and did not want her to get hung so they found her not guilty. Although do to this incident and many others the penalty of being hung was taken out of the legal system, not convicting guilty people is not the right way to do things. We cannot allow guilty people to run free because n does not agree with a law or punishment.

In the older law their were many things that were considered evil and unacceptable in society. Some of these evils included masturbation, adultery, perversion and fornication. Because they were considered evil they were not allowed to be publisher in books and therefore the public was never subjected to them. However in modern law these things are not always looked down upon. Experts are now not sure weather they are evil or not and believe that they are both the type of evils in which the law should be concerned

According to C.S Lewis fornication, adultery, masturbation and perversions are evil. He feels that the only evil that the law should be involved with is adulatory because it is a breech of contract. Lewis finds two propositions that he does not agree with. One is that real literature cannot corrupt people and two is that if a book is of great work it does not matter if it corrupts you or not. He greatly disagrees with both of these propositions and says they are nonsense.

In using the Lady Chatterley case as an example Lewis discussing the definition of taste. Taste deals directly to what authors write about. Weather it is tasteful or not has to do with personal opinion and authors are usually stating their personal opinions throughout their works. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and no opinion is better or worse then another but the point is that they are judgments on mere facts.

Please note that this sample paper on cs lewis is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In life everyone has a mentor or mentors that have guided him or her through life in some way or another. I consider my dad a mentor, I feel this way because I have gained much knowledge from being around him. Some of this knowledge is good but some I believe isn't good at all. I now understand in my life why we have had so many differences in our opinions. I also now know how to act around people and how to act in life. This knowledge I feel will help me in the long run in life and be able to guide me through it. I believe this because kids are the master of their own destiny.

My dad has given me a better understanding on how I should act in life. He has shown me to love and cherish my family, this he didn't show me directly but indirectly by not acting this way. By him not acting in this manner I have understood more what the consequences can be by acting in the wrong way. I feel that this has helped me to give me a better understanding on life. I also feel that another act in life that he has chosen to do incorrectly in my opinion is to not discuss problems but to keep them balled up inside. This is another lesson I have learned not to do in life. I learned that by keeping problems inside it only causes for more problems to occur. I feel that the true reason for me being able to understand this is because parents help their children by leading by example. But in my case I believe that he should learn by my example. Also by my father giving me a better understanding of how not to act in life I feel that it has given me a true coming of age.

I have had a real loss of innocence with my father. I now understand this because recently we have had opposite opinions on most topics. An example would be that he would rather work than be at home with his family. I believe otherwise, I think that family should be first priority and because of this difference it has caused for some grief. I also feel that we have had these problems because I don't exactly want to live the same lifestyle as him as I get older. I believe that this has caused for me to have a loss of innocence because I have changed dramatically, I don't just want to have fun with life anymore but I want to be able to enjoy my work and have a loving family and be able to in all enjoy life to its fullest.

Another reason for my coming of age is that my dad doesn't exactly believe many things that I say about what my lifestyle is going to be like when I get older.

An example is that I believe strongly that I will achieve a lot in life including a loving family, nice house, being an orthodontist, and having money. When I say these things though he always laughs, I find this offensive as if he is mocking me and it seems that we never see eye to eye on this topic. I now understand through my coming of age that he doesn't agree with the way I feel I will live my life. He feels betrayed in a sense though because I don't want to follow in his footsteps and be more interested in his job and his lifestyle and essentially his likes and dislikes. One example of why I feel he doesn't approve of my lifestyle is because I have never enjoyed going out to our farm. This has always baffled him, but the main thing is that he just doesn't understand and doesn't want to understand that I am completely different than him.

In my life I have had one mentor that I feel has changed my life dramatically. He has given me a better understanding on how not to live my life. This person is my father. I have gained much knowledge from him on the way to live my life. I now feel that he doesn't exactly approve of the lifestyle that I want to live and this has caused for many disagreements. But what he doesn't understand is it is my life and that I should live it the way I see fit. These disagreements essentially are the cause for my coming of age. I believe that I am beginning to grow everyday and become more mature because of this. In essence this mentor has given me a loss of innocence. But with this loss of innocence I have really gained knowledge on life in total. He has also truly shown me that I should enjoy life because if I don't I will end up having a lifestyle like his. One that I wont find enjoyable or interesting.

Please note that this sample paper on john is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. During the college experience, some students find themselves forced to work for two main reasons, either to generate their own pocket money or pay their tuition fees. For me, as a student, despite its good sides, working while studying is wrong due to many reasons.

First of all, regarding its good sides, working while studying can be useful by giving the student an experience in the active world, like for example how to earn money and how hard this task can be or how to treat customers and especially the most tiring ones; It can also be useful by helping the student get a practical example of his major, for example if a student is majoring in management it can be useful for him to work in the management department of a company helping him see what it's really all about.

Order Custom working while studying paper

Second, and as I said earlier, working while studying has many disadvantages among which, the fact that, being tied up to a certain job can take a lot of the precious time a student can use to focus on his major and studies to improve his grades. For example a working student always has to double the effort to keep up with the average student that has more time to study or else he'll have lower grades or even fail some of his courses.

This issue can also be a disadvantage in a way that doubling the effort for the working student to keep up with the average one can be very tiring or even exhausting. For example a working student having to double the effort to study in a much shorter time than the average one will always be tired given the fact that he's doing both at the same time.

Last but not least, the biggest disadvantage working while studying can be for a student, and most of all at this age, is depriving him from some spare time to have fun, make friends and relax. For example, the working student will use part of the spare time the average one uses for having fun to work and use the other part of it for the most essential thing a human body can have which is sleeping.

Finally, we can see that the disadvantages of working while studying are a lot more numerous than its advantages, which brings us to conclude that a student is far better of with plain studying than working at the same time. And as for the pocket money and the tuition fees I think that parents should be responsible for the first one and that the university itself should take care of helping the less privileged parents in paying

wrinkled, leathery skin of the elephants. The dark shadows complement the backdrop

beautifully, and merge the main focus of the painting, the swans reflecting elephants.

Dali's main focus of the painting is based on surrealism. This technique is

different from most styles of painting, mainly because everyone will perceive the piece

differently. What we initially thought were swans turned out to be elephants, but not

all viewers would be able to see that at first glance. Salvador Dali's work draws the

viewer in with his illusory technique. He enables the viewer to look beyond the

immediate surface of the painting and this allows the unique perception of the viewer to

come alive.

Salvador Dali's imaginative and unreal tactics consume the eyes of the viewer.

The transformation begins when the silvery mercury reflection of the water converts

Swans gliding across the water into majestic elephants. The illusion captivates the viewer

by subconsciously leading him or her to see with the mind's eye. What the viewers see

and think are two components which suit the complete success of the painting.

Color choice is another component that influences the viewer's involvement. Dali's

combination of red and orange produce a dream-like setting. The clouds are gracefully

preserved in the twilight and compliment Dali's soft tones and masterful use of color

which illuminate the centerpiece.

Dali's ability to master the use of color, light and dark contrast all assist in the

element of the illusory technique that makes this painting an absolute success.

Salvador Dali could be considered one of the greatest surrealist painters of his time.

Dali's work contained a fusion of many elements that would allow the viewer to perceive

the painting in a new light with each glance. With the work of Salvador Dali, we see that

the position for fine art has been filled.

"She Walks in Beauty"

by George Gordon, Lord Byron

Write your "She Walks in Beauty"by George Gordon, Lord Byron research paper

The poem is beautiful. It sounds as if Byron admires this woman a great deal. If you did not know the background to the poem, you would think he was talking about a lover. The poem is written, however, about his cousin's wife whom he saw wearing a dark colored mourning gown with spangles on it.

In the opening paragraph, Byron portrays a beautiful night with stars in the sky and then a beautiful woman appears. It almost sounds like he is saying that her beauty overshadows the beautifully clear night sky. I think any woman would like to be admired in this manner.

Byron sounds to me like a hopeless romantic. He uses the imagery of darkness and light to make this woman sound almost angelic. We can see this when he says "One shade the more, one ray the less, / Had half impair'd the nameless grace/ Which waves in every raven tress, / Or softly lightens o'er her face;" (lines 7-10, Longman). We can almost visualize her dark hair and pale skin.

It sounds as if Byron is saying she is as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. This is seen when he says "A mind at peace with all below, / A heart whose love is innocent!" (lines 17-18, Longman). It almost sounds like she is childlike in that she has a pure heart and sees love as innocent. Most adults protect their hearts from getting hurt by love.

Byron has portrayed this woman as perfection and beauty. Even though his descriptions of this woman may have conflicting attributes, the overall portrayal of her implies that these attributes have created a perfect woman. Byron shows that external and internal beauty, as well as darkness and light, can be viewed on the same scale.

It is strange, though, that he would write such a romantic poem about a relative. It almost sounds like he is in love with her. I have to wonder if Byron did not secretly wish that this beautiful creature could be his. I think his feelings for her were deep by his portraying her as such a beautifully perfect creature.

The dictionary defines the word "hero" as, "A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life." These are definitely the qualities of heroes. When many people hear the word hero, a comic figure perhaps comes to mind, but I visualize someone amazingly special and matchless. In addition, this personal hero is someone who helped motivate and inspire me. Someone who meets all of these characteristics is my late paternal grandmother, Nagita Rai.

My grandma was born in a small town in northern India in year 115. She was thoughtful, warm hearted, incredibly brave, and a self-sacrificing lady. During elementary school, my mother and sisters left the US and lived in India for a few years. During those years, I became very close to my grandma and began to see how she always put others before herself. When my sisters returned, she looked after all three of us. Even though she could have had a much more luxurious and easy going life in India, she still sacrificed it just to take care of us. My grandma possessed a great sense of unconditional love for everyone and that is one of the heroic deeds that made her so admirable.

As time progressed, she became weak and ill. She became hospitalized after receiving several cardiac arrests. Despite all the IV needles stuck all over her body, which would have probably caused one to get frustrated or sad, she would start vivaciously laughing when her loved ones came to visit her and treated them as if they were guests in her own home. Withstanding the pain and her approach to recovery with such a positive and heroic attitude made others, including I so fond of her.

Her condition became so bad that it came to a point the doctors said they were going to perform a bypass surgery on her, but they said it was optional and she may even die. We told her a week or so before that if she gets the surgery done it will eliminate her valve problems, therefore, making her healthier. She was very brave and took the risk. Unfortunately, she did not make it, and passed away on September 7,1. I never knew anyone other than my grandma who sacrificed her life for the sake of the well-being and security for her three grandchildren. This was the first time I had to experience losing one of the most important people a part of my life. Although, when she left this world, her one of kind qualities influenced me to become a better individual.

In conclusion, my hero is my grandma because without her in my life, I would have never had someone to show me the true meaning of heroic qualities.

My Move to Atlanta

" I have big news," trying to be enthusiastic. "What is it?" my sister and I replied with anticipation. "We are moving to Atlanta," she said with excitement. " What?" I replied in great disbelief. These were the words that had changed my life. At the time I thought this was the worst thing that has ever happened to me. Little did I know it was the best thing.

Moving to Atlanta was a very big change that I thought would be very scary. Having to meet all these new people and changing cultures was kind of rough in the beginning. I was already very nervous the first day of school and then I learned that I also had one more challenge to overcome. I had to learn and speak a new dialect. Then everything seemed to go from bad to worse. All these new slang terms I had to try and understand. For example, "ya'll." Before I moved down here I had no idea what that meant. Another example would be "I'ma go get me some of dem French fried pertaters" is another term that I learned which mean "I'm going to get myself some french fries." Southern dialect is very complicated and complex.

All of my new friends that I have made here have made fun of me on countless occasions for my northern dialect. For example, my friend David makes fun of me for saying the word "pop." In Ohio pop is our way of saying coke or soda. Another example would be my friend Alex making fun of me for liking the Cleveland Browns. I have never met someone from the south who has liked the Browns. Everyone down here seems to be quite fond of the Atlanta Falcons, being a Browns fan, I don't understand why.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Dialect

In the south, there are many things that people do that the people where I'm from wouldn't even dream of doing. In Sandusky, not a lot of people do drugs or steal. Down here I hear all the time how people get busted for shoplifting or possession. It just goes to show that the area where you grow up affects the way you turn out. Usually you can tell by the way people talk, act, and look if they are going to be trouble when they grow up.

Language affects everything around us. In most cultures people do get judged by the way they act and talk. Judging people isn't really the way to live your life. I think if you meet somebody from a different society then you should definitely get to know him or her before you start passing judgment. If you are going to pass judgment on someone then you should have good reasons to. Being able to speak different dialects and not get persecuted for it is just one of the many things that make our country the best in the world!

Discuss three ways in which the scale and articulation of the Colosseum gave meaning to the building in the context of Imperial Rome.

The Colosseum was commissioned as a symbol of Rome, confirming the wealth and power and might of Rome, and the Imperial Roman Empire to both the outside world and citizens of Rome. The scale and articulation reinforced the magnificence of the amphitheatre and viewed with wonder and awe.

The scale and design of the five tiers used for the seating made from concrete and stone ¹ varied in size and design, demonstrating social structure and hierarchy within Rome. Senators and dignitaries sat closest to the arena, with women, and slaves seated furthest away. The Emperor's box was situated at the ringside where everyone could see his reactions to the performances.

The strength of the arches throughout the building together with the arcades evenly placed within adds to the articulation of the arches that are framed with pilasters and entablature. The orders are repeated on three floors with Doric the strongest and more substantial but less decorative on the first, Ionic on the second slenderer and taller with an ornate capital and finally Corinthian on

the third, the slenderest and topped with a highly decorated capital. There is evidence of the grand and importance entrance for the Emperor's ² with remains of an ornate portico with pillars and an archway decorated with paintings, gilding and mouldings all emphasising the importance of the Emperor and the Senate.

An example of a modern amphitheatre is Wembley Stadium, a prime-sporting arena, which has close parallels with the Colosseum, together with an ellipsis arena. Wembley has an impressive entrance that would have been fitting for an Emperor on his way to his ringside box. Not only was Wembley built for the purpose of entertaining many people it was also built to convey the wealth and power at the time of the British Empire.

In conclusion the design of the Colosseum portrayed the wealth and power and strength of the Roman Empire. The Coliseum is still a magnificent and beautiful building full of style and elegance.
