Everlasting Love

Andrew Marvell was known for his work with carpe diem poetry. His poem entitled "To His Coy Mistress" is an interesting example of the carpe diem style Marvell used. In "To His Coy Mistress" Marvell makes use of allusion, metaphor, and brilliant imagery in order to express a mood of everlasting love and defying the boundaries of time. Other poems such as "Corinna's Going A-Maying" by Robert Herrick are along the same lines as Marvell's carpe diem poetry. However, there are some important differences to be noted.

Herrick's poem stressed the importance of time and making use of it, similar to the way Marvell did. However, Herrick's poem differed in that he used many springtime images, and references. For example, "Each flower has wept and bowed toward the east…"(line 7) and "The dew bespangled herb and tree,"(line 6) reflects Herrick's use of springtime images. Also, all through the poem Herrick made reference to the Gods of nature, such as Apollo the god of the sun and Aurora the goddess of the dawn. This was different in Marvell's "To his Coy Mistress" because he began his poem by stating how he wanted to love his lady if, "Had we but world enough and time,"(Line 1). Rather than beginning with a concept of death or all of the beautiful things going on in nature, Marvell chose to expand on his love, and how his wished it could beeverlasting and untouched by time.

The main theme in Andrew Marvell's "To His Coy Mistress" is man's limited time on Earth. His focus was completely on the passion he had for his lady, rather than the passion Herrick had for nature. Marvell began to slow the passage of time within his own poem by speaking of past and future events on a large scale. For example he stated, "I would love you ten years before the Flood, and you should if you please, refuse till the conversion of the Jews,"(Lines 7-10). Marvell is making reference to the Flood, which occurred sometime after creation, and to the end of the world, which is when the Jews were supposed to be converted. This form of allusion was used to take the focus away from the underlying outcome that is unavoidable.

Andrew Marvell used a powerful metaphor in lines 11-1 which stated, "My vegetable love should grow, Vaster than empires, and more slow." The image here is of a slow growing vegetable, similar to a thick vine, which with every inch it grows thicker and longer slowly taking over large spaces. The image of Kudzu, a vine that takes over all trees, flowers, and grass until it eventually covers everything in sight like a thick blanket, leaving no spaces forgotten is evoked by this metaphor. It does grow, "Vaster than empires." It is also interesting to note that time is not important to the plant. Since, Marvell's point is to take the focus off impending death, his used an example of a plant or vegetable that has no record of time.

The first half of the poem is dedicated to slowing time or almost stopping it completely. Marvell used exaggeration to show that with more time he would love his lady with no boundaries. He stated, "An hundred year should go to praise thine eyes, and on thy forehead gaze; two hundred to adore each breast,"(Lines 1-15). It is not possible to imagine such a long time frame; therefore Marvell's point is made when he goes on to the next part of the poem in which death is near. "Time's winged chariot hurrying near,"(Line ) is used in reference to death and time running out, a subject that Marvell has worked hard to ignore. He also used another metaphor to explain what happens after death by stating, "Deserts of vast eternity,"(Line 4). This image is very depressing and very large considering it is the smallest sentence in the poem. It is the most vivid image in the poem however, because it is an image of complete nothing. We get images of heat, sand, despair and miles and miles of absolutely nothing, which is a little terrifying to say the least. This metaphor is similar to that of Herrick's in the last stanza of "Corinna's Going A-Maying" when he stated, "And as a vapor or a drop of rain. Once lost can never be found again,"(Lines 6-64). Herrick is referring to death and how our lives are just little specks in the grand scheme of life and the world. Again, the image is depressing and a very small comparison between a drop of rain and a life.

The rhyme scheme in "To his Coy Mistress" is perfect rhyme or true rhyme. For example each pair of sentences rhymes with the next. Lines 1 and rhyme (time and crime), while lines and 4 rhyme (way and day) and lines 5 and 6 rhyme (side and tide) this pattern goes on until the last two lines (sun and run) which rhyme. This is the same rhyme scheme that is seen in Herrick's poem. Lines 1 and rhyme (morn and unshorn), while lines and 4 rhyme (fair and air) and finally lines 5 and 6 rhyme (see and tree) and so forth. The effect of this simple rhyme scheme is that it limits the poet's choice of words. Line one must always rhyme with line two so therefore the poet is limited with what he can say. The same is almost true for the syllables in the lines. Marvell's poem started off with seven syllables in the first two lines and the eight in the next two, then back to seven. There seemed to be a pattern there, however a few lines (such as line 11) do not follow the pattern. This could just be the way the words are pronounced now, as opposed to in the 1600's. Herrick's poem also takes the same format with his syllables. Lines 1 and have the same syllables (10), and lines and 4 have the same syllables (7) and so forth. The only differences found were those of the verses. In Herrick's 5-stanza poem, all of the verses have a close at the end always saying something with "go A-Maying" at the end. This acts as a conclusion to each stanza. However, Marvell's -stanza poem does not do that, rather it has a beginning, middle, and ending to close the stanzas.

Everlasting love what the poet Andrew Marvell is focusing on. He does not wish to give time his love; rather he wishes to destroy it so that he can love that way he wants to love. This idea is prominent in his poem "To his Coy Mistress" which is a carpe diem poem. It is similar to that of Robert Herrick's "Corinna's Going A-Maying" in that it is also a carpe diem poem, with similar rhyme schemes. Andrew Marvell used the same theme in a different way by referring to his love rather than to nature the way Herrick did. Using the methods talked about earlier, Marvell created a sense of timelessness and a feeling of outsmarting death.

A phobia is defined as an irrational or very powerful fear and dislike of something. There is a name for almost every phobia that is known. Psychologists and researchers typically pinpoint a time from childhood when the phobia usually starts. It is caused by a stressful or traumatizing situation. A lot of people can be cured with treatment while others just learn to live with their phobia.

Generally, things that look similar to or is in the same category as the phobia triggers the same emotional response. Sometimes people are disgusted with a certain thing and can not be exactly sure of what is so disgusting about that thing they are afraid of. Many people are also unaware that they may have a phobia. It has been proven that it might also be genetic; there is not a whole lot of significant evidence to prove this though.

According to Psychology by Hockenbury and Hockenbury, phobias are conditioned and can be unconditioned. From the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Nov 00 v41 i11 p176 (4) (66 words), a boy overcame his fear of buttons by going to doctors and getting treatment for his phobia.

And so now with that in mind…

Felinophobia

(Fear of Cats)

Hey, listen up, I do not have a lot of time to tell you my story, she is looking and it will not be long before he finds me. My name is Larry, and if I could pinpoint a time in my life when all this started, I would have to say that it started a few years ago. These traumatic experiences may not seem like much to you, but when it adds up, it is a lot to me. When I was younger I got all the attention I needed, anytime I came into the room I was shown affection. Kisses and hugs galore, who could ask for anything more.

Everyone was always calling my name, and I would go wherever they were. My domain was practically in the yard. I would play a game where my friend Chris would throw a ball and then I would get it and give it to him. We did this nearly everyday.

I would also have to say I am well taken care of. There is always enough food for me and plenty to drink. A warm bed and a soft blanket to comfort me through the night. Of, course some nights it did not seem to keep me as warm as I would have liked it to.

Then, one day, I entered the house where I live and I saw this thing. It moved like I did, had face like mine, at least at the time I thought so. Little teeth and ears, the scent was different, but I thought I was looking into a mirror. I had a new friend to play with. Her name is Shelly.

At first it was the most fun I ever had. We would chase each other back and forth all the time. Other days we would run and jump off the furniture in the house, and play hide and seek. Oh the fun we had together. But then it she started getting rougher with me. Sometimes I would come around a corner and as fast as she could she would jump on me and scare me half to death.

Shelly began waiting for me to go to sleep, then run up on me and swat me and took off. The only way I knew it was her was the fact that she had a distinct scent to her. It is a difficult scent to describe, one mixed with the shampoo specifically made for her, a perfume type of shampoo. Did you hear that? Listen, it sounds like soft footsteps coming, hold...on…phew, I think I was just hearing things.

Where was I, oh yes, the sneakiness of her foul acts. A lot of times she would sneak behind me while I was eating, bite me, and then run off while I was trying to figure out what happened and why I was pain. She is a terrible creature. I get all tensed up when I think she is around me. It is a horrible way to live.

I think she is around every corner. There will be sounds of her coming behind me and I quickly turn around fast as lightning and she is not behind me at all. A lot of times I jump out of my sleep expecting her to be there right in front of me about to hit me. I get light head sometimes and dizzy. My breath seems to escape from me and wants to fly away as far as it can go from me forever.

Believe it or not, I get hot and cold sweats. When I eat I sometimes get a sudden feeling of nausea and this anxiety overwhelms me to the point I run and hide. When I hear my name being said I sometimes do not go. I know she will hear it too, and be somewhere hiding, waiting for me. She out grew me in the years that followed our first playful times together.

I know for a fact that she enjoys my misery. She always has this grin on her face and this look in her eyes that just see right through me. My limbs go numb and all I want to do is hide. I think I am going to be sick now. All this talk is starting to get to me; I am having this tremendous pain in my stomach. Please make it stop, just breathe, huh whooo, huh whooo, that is a little better.

I just needed to tell somebody in case anything happens to me. One day she may touch me and I will suddenly explode. Do not tell anyone I told you this. It may bring serious repercussions to me. She is not to be trusted, heed this as a warning. You never know if this will happen to you.

Oh my goodness, what is that. I see you, grrrrrrr, come here, come here, I got you, yes I do. Wait a minute, that is just my tail. I really dislike when that happens. It is hard being a Japanese chin; we are smart and lovable dogs. Just know that those cats are not as nice and innocent as they look.

It all comes down to this, I am now paranoid when turning corners. I have trouble breathing and seeing when I smell her scent or any scent like hers. If I see a similar face to Shelly's, I get dizzy and light headed. If I catch a breath of her scent or see anything remotely close to resembling her I get these panic attacks. When I think of her while I am eating, I start to feel sick to the stomach. I have been trying hard to overcome all this, but it is really difficult.

I have heard that it is not hopeless, there is a chance that I may be able to be normal again. Until then, take care, I will do the same as best as I can. Now it is time for me to go to sleep. Even now I feel like there is something behind me, breathing on me. It is probably nothing, but I still need to look. Ahhhhhhhh!

The Narrator in Ellison's Invisible Man

Ralph Ellisons Invisible Man is the story of an educated black man who has been oppressed and controlled by white men throughout his life. As the narrator, he is nameless throughout the novel as he journeys from the South, where he studies at an all-black college, to Harlem where he joins a Communist-like party known as the Brotherhood. Throughout the novel, the narrator is on a search for his true identity. Several letters are given to him by outsiders that provide him with a role student, patient, and a member of the Brotherhood. One by one he discards these as he continues to grow closer to the sense of his true self. The entire story can be summed up when the narrator says Im an invisible man and it placed me in a hole- or showed me the hole I was in.... (455). During the novel, the narrator values several important things, which shape his identity as well as his future. Through his experiences and the people he has met, the narrator discovers the important values of his education, his invisibility, and the meaning of his grandfathers advice.

From the very beginning of the novel the narrator values his education. His education first brings him a calfskin briefcase, when the superintendent rewards him for his success, saying, Take this prize and keep it well. Consider it a badge of office. Prize it. Keep developing as you are and some day it will be filled with important papers that will help shape the destiny of your people (4). The narrator treasures the briefcase so much because it symbolizes his education. He carries it throughout the whole novel, and it is the only object he takes into the cellar from his former life. In addition, the narrator is overjoyed at what he finds inside the briefcase It was a scholarship to the state college for Negroes. My eyes filled with tears and I

ran awkwardly on the floor (44). The narrator could now afford to take his education further. Education is so important to the narrator because it raises his status above the other blacks. The narrator values his education from the very beginning of the novel, as it brings him many rewards. Many people feel that with education comes a newfound status. It many times is the determining factor in what differentiates the average from the good. In the 150's, it was the difference that literally separated a black man from his slave ancestors, as well as the multitude of uneducated black men at the time.

Towards the end of the novel, the narrator begins to value his invisibility. The narrator first begins to grasp the value of invisibility when he says I was and yet I was invisible, that was the fundamental contradiction. I was and yet I was unseen. It was frightening and as I sat there I sensed another frightening world of possibilities (16). He says this when he takes on the identity of Rinehart. He begins to realize that It is sometimes advantageous to be unseen (). Not only is he entertained at people mistaking his identity, but also it allows him to slip by Ras the Exhorter unnoticed. Similarly, invisibility ends up saving his life in the riots, as he thinks I felt myself plunge down....a long drop that ended upon a load of black coal.....I lay in the black dark upon the black coal no longer running, hiding or concerned (41). Men were chasing him with baseball bats, demanding that he hand over his briefcase. The narrator ran away and fell through a manhole, finding himself in a coal cellar. He was now literally invisible to everyone, allowing him to escape. Finally, the narrators new found invisibility allows him to live in the coal cellar, where he can Now, aware of my invisibility...live rent-free in a building rented strictly to whites (18). As the narrator develops and matures towards the end of the novel, he

realizes that the invisibility he once cursed can be highly beneficial to him. Invisibility can be perceived a variety of ways. Depending on how one looks at it, it can be both beneficial and at the same time a hindrance. While it allows humility to be expressed, it also minimizes the impact one can make to society. It allows one to "get away with murder," but at the same time not be noticeable to others around him/her.

The advice that the narrator receives from his grandfather is the final, and perhaps the most significant of his values. The advice of his grandfather states

Son, after Im gone I want you to keep up the good fight... Live with your head in the

lions mouth. I want you to overcome em with yeses, undermine em with grins, agree em to death and destruction, let em swoller you till they vomit or bust wide open"(6).

He first grasps this advice after Cliftons funeral and after the Brotherhood betrays him. These words have haunted him his whole life, and now he fully understands and believes this advice. This new understanding leads the narrator to develop a new plan. He decides to follow the advice and become a spy, pretending to be loyal to the Brotherhood, while plotting to overthrow them. The very next day, he begins by seeking to use Sybil as an inside source of information. At last, the advice finally brings the narrator to his purpose in life. This advice brings him closer to his true self, as he realizes what he must do. His grandfathers advice determines and shapes his future, and it becomes the basis of his plans. The advice of his grandfather has the greatest impact on the narrator, as his understanding of it completes his search for self-identity. Advice comes in many forms, and many times the simplest advice can provide the most guidance.

However, most times advice is overlooked, and one must experience something first hand to truly realize the authenticity of such advice.

Everyone has values. At the beginning of the novel, the narrator values his education, as it brings him many rewards. As he develops and matures, he begins to value his invisibility, which resulted from whites refusing to see him. His invisibility allowed him to survive, and it became a key part in his plan to end oppression against blacks. Finally, the advice of his grandfather, which disturbed him his whole life, ended up being his purpose in life. These values shape the narrators identity, as well as his path. Although all these values are extremely important to the narrator, I cannot completely relate to all of them. The narrator faced constant oppression throughout the entire novel. He managed to survive and succeed because of his values. Throughout Ellisons novel, the narrator possessed the strong values of education, invisibility, and his grandfather's advice. There are many factors that shape a character. Whether it is another character, an experience, or just a general personality characteristic, every character has something that makes him/her unique and uncommon.

Everglades National Park

On November 17, 001 I visited Everglades National Park. Established in 147

Everglades National Park was the first national park preserved primarily for its abundance and variety of life, rather than scenic or historic values. The Florida Everglades is the most environmentally threatened park in the nation - the list of ecological concerns seems endless. Most of the problems stem from the altered hydrology of the everglades due to agricultural demands, flood control, and other forms development.

The primary purpose of the Everglades is to maintain and preserve its natural resources and also to provide recreation for the public. The park is approximately 1.7 million acres and growing as it claims bordering lands to the park.

Custom Essays on Everglades National Park

This park has many habitats and communities. At present day, approximately 1,000 plant and animal species invade the park along with approximately 0 endemic plant species. Some of the natural habitats in the park include pinelands, mangroves, sawgrass, marine, and swamp and marsh habitats.

One of the main problems affecting these natural habitats of the Everglades is the water table. The water table of the Everglades is naturally at a delicate equilibrium. Once the equilibrium was disturbed by development, the water table started fluctuating from high to low levels. Droughts and floods alike cause problems for the Everglades. The Everglades has been altered such that / of the area depends on the rain received by 1/ of the original watershed. The amount of water the Everglades receives is only one half the original amount; there is not enough water to sustain the ecological systems.

The level of disturbance this park has experienced is incredible. When regions of the Everglades are filled with excess water, an unnatural hydro period occurs. These abnormal wet cycles are harmful to the ecosystem of the area. If more water is released into the park, their nests are flooded and destroyed. Due to the altered hydro periods, much of the natural habitat has been destroyed. For example alligators build their nests at the high-water level. If more water is released into the park, their nests are flooded and destroyed. Right now about 500 remain in Florida. Endangered snail kite birds feed on the aquatic apple snail. Low- water conditions, human caused or natural, reduce snail and snail-kite populations. This, coupled with the frequent droughts, has a detrimental effect on the wildlife. There are 14 endangered animal species in the Everglades, and many more populations are on the decline. Wading birds and water animals are the most affected by low water levels because their food sources are destroyed. The tiny fish that are food for many birds certainly cannot live in a dried up pond, and therefore birds also are affected.

The wood stork has declined from 6,000 nesting birds to just 500 since the 160's. Their feeding behavior explains their predicament. Wood storks feed not by sight, but by touch in shallow and often muddy water full of plants. Fish can't be seen in those conditions. Only seasonally drying wetlands concentrate enough fish to provide the 440 pounds a pair of these big birds requires during breeding season. When human water management upsets natural wetland cycles, wood storks fail to nest successfully.

One exotic currently threatening the park is the Brazilian Pepper. This exotic is currently grown in a 4,000 square acre area that used to be farmland and that the park took over. Park officials assumed that they would be able to take out the vegetation and allow the natural vegetation to take over, but that never happened. The result of this was that they basically changed the nutrient composition of the soil. So now all that grows there is Brazilian Pepper.

One way that they have been able to eradicate this is to total substrate the area. This means basically that they are removing every last particle down to the limestone. This process will allow the sedimentation process to occur again and hopefully organic materials and other particles will settle in over the limestone. When this happens it is expected to return to zero nutrient quality and then the native plants will be able to grow again.

Some of the species invading the park are Pink Shrimp, Brown Pelican, Osprey, Gray Snapper, Turtle Grass, White Pelican, Great White Heron, White Ibis, Crayfish, Marsh Rabbit, River Otter, Baytrees, Alligators, White Tailed Deer, Strangler Fig, Sawgrass Skipper, Wildpine, Royal Palm, and Yellow Rat Snake.

Currently the threatened plant species is Garber's Spurge.

The endangered reptiles list includes the American crocodile previously mentioned, Hawksbill Turtle, Green turtle, Atlantic Ridley Turtle, and Leatherback Turtle.

Endangered birds Wood Stork, Snail Kite, Red-Cockaded Woodpecker, and Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow.

The threatened species list includes Garber's Spurge (plant), Stock Island Tree Snail (invertebrate), American Alligator (reptile), Eastern Indigo Snake (reptile), Loggerhead Turtle (reptile), Southern Bald Eagle (bird), Artic peregrine Falcon (bird), Piping Plover (bird), and Roseate Tern (bird).

The most important mammal here is the Florida Panther. The tragic population decline- fewer than 50 are left- of this large cat, symbolizes the environmental deterioration that has plagued this park. The panther holds the distinction of being among the most critical of all the 68 endangered and threatened species living in the Everglades.

Solutions are underway, but the fate of Everglades National Park still hangs in the balance. Congress has extended the park boundaries to protect the eastern Shark River Slough. This slough used to host higher concentrations of wading bird nesting populations than any other area in the park location. The enlargement is expected to help turn around the percent decline these species have suffered by restoring critical habitat. The Park Service is currently working with the US Army Corps of Engineers and other water management jurisdictions to adapt natural rainfall modes of manipulating water supplies.

To help reduce or eliminate the effect of invasive exotic species in the community, the average citizen could contribute by not releasing or growing any exotic animal or plant species. They could also help by supporting legislation that will fund and plan projects that will help natural parks eliminate these exotic species so that natural habitat could take over.

As a future educator myself, I plan on educating my students about our environment, this could be done through Environmental Education programs offered through the park service. Our ultimate goal is to protect our environment so that future generations may have a livable habitat.

The Proof that Men and Women are NOT Alike

Men are a mystery to me, and no matter what anyone has said or proven, men and woman are not alike. They are different as night and day. Men think, act, and respond to life in obscure ways. It's amazing how women ever get along with, live, love, and tolerate men on a daily basis.

Have you ever heard of a woman forgetting an anniversary, Valentines Day or the day they met their husband? No, this doesnt happen. However, if a man forgets these dates it is a good, valid reason for a divorce. This happens easily for men, because memories are non-existent in a man. Have you ever watched a football game? If you have, you will notice all of the instant replays. This is simply because men have already forgotten what has happened! Women remember everything. A woman can tell her mate the last time he left the toilet seat up, the prices of everything on sale at her favorite department store, or the last time her mate cooked, even if it was three years ago. Men forget their mistakes with astounding ease. A Man thinks that there is no use in two people remembering the same thing, because he knows that his mate will remember. A woman's memory is so alert, that she can remember details of an argument that occurred ten years to the day, and remind her partner how he was indeed wrong and is still wrong.

A man does not call a relationship a relationship. He refers to it as, that time when me and Suzie was doing it on a semi-regular basis. When a relationship ends, a woman will cry and pour her heart out to her girlfriends, and she will write a poem titled All Men Are Idiots. Then she will get on with her life. A man has a little more trouble letting go. Six months after the break-up, at 00 a.m. on a Saturday night, he will call drunk and say, I just wanted to let you know you ruined my life, and Ill never forgive you, and I hate you, and youre a total floozy. But, I want you to know theres always a chance for us. Most men have made this phone call at least once.

Men simply can't enjoy some of the simple pleasures in life, like shopping. Men hate to shop. A man will pay two dollars for a one-dollar item he wants. A woman will pay one dollar for a two-dollar item that she doesnt want. Go to any department store, and notice that nine times out of ten, the men's department is usually on the first floor, and two inches from the door. The men's department is much smaller than the women's, and it was made this way on purpose. Whoever designed the store knew that this floor plan is essential to keep a man's attention. Women however, will make a day trip out of shopping and shopping is a social activity. Women will invite her friends, family, and make new friends while at the mall. The day can easily pass by while socializing, hunting down bargains and trying on new fashions. A man will never tolerate this. A man treats shopping as a mission, with a specific goal in mind. He simply enters the store, finds what he is looking for and leaves. A man rarely tries on clothing; this would take to much time. Women take clothing much more seriously than men. Ive never seen a man walk into a party and say, Oh no, Im so embarrassed; Ive got to get out of here. Theres another man wearing a black tuxedo.

Grocery shopping is quite the opposite of the department store. A woman makes a list of the things she needs and then goes to the store and buys them. A man will wait with much patience, until the only items left in his fridge are half a lemon and something turning green. Then he goes grocery shopping. This is quite an accomplishment, and he buys everything that looks good. He will have his cart packed tightly and it will look like he is buying food for a small army. You will then observe him heading towards checkout, in the ten items or less lane.

Men are overly sensitive individuals. For example, you will not find a woman get mad if she builds a fire and the log doesn't burn. If this happens to a man, he will take it very personally. His reaction is predictable; he will most likely will kick and jump on the log until its mulch. A woman will simply go buy some new matches and ask for help. Men become very upset when they loose a game. A woman will practice, and try to get better if she looses. I once played a game of tennis with my husband, and I beat him. I asked him, "Are we going to play again?" He said, "Maybe next year," while throwing the racket across the court.

Often in public you will see a man display a tattoo. A man who has a tattoo, sees his tattoo has a work of art. A woman thinks art is a painting that is hung on a wall. A man is proud of this "artwork" on his body, and will show it off to anyone who will look. No self-respecting woman would look at a tattoo of a skull and bones and call it art.

Men and women age quite differently. When a woman reaches menopause, she goes through a variety of complicated emotional, psychological, and biological changes. Menopause in a man provokes a uniform reaction; he buys aviator glasses, a flashy French cap, goes shopping for a new Porsche, and finds a woman half his age to be his new girlfriend.

If a woman is out driving and she finds herself in unfamiliar surroundings, she will stop at a gas station and ask for directions. Men consider this to be a sign of weakness. Men will never stop and ask for directions. A man will drive in a circle for hours, all the while saying things like, Looks like Ive found a new way, and, I know Im in the neighborhood. I recognize that." This is why it took Mosses in the Bible, forty years to go through the dessert; he wouldn't ask for directions.

One of men's favorite pastimes is sports. If a man is watching sports and his favorite team is loosing, he will often stomp on the floor, and yell the player's names; he thinks the players can hear him. If the team he is rooting for looses, he will often be depressed. However, if the team wins he is suddenly physic. He will claim that he is able to predict the outcome for the entire season. A woman will tolerate this, and will often engage in this activity with her partner even if she isn't entertained. She does this hoping that her mate will watch a romance movie with her later. This rarely will happen.

Dr. John Gray composed a best-selling book, and coined the phrase, "Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus." I agree what that phrase; men are from out of this world, and from a different planet! It is amazing to me that men and women can tolerate each other on a daily basis. Men and women may look similar, and both are classified as mammals, but men are most definitely a different species than women. It has been said that opposites attract. This might be true, and it explains the mystery of how men and women can tolerate each other throughout the ages.

The novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest is based on the conflicts of a sane man in a psychiatric ward, where many insane men live. "Ting. Tingle, tingle, tremble toes, she's a good fisherman, catches hens, puts 'em in pens… wire blier, limber lock, three geese inna flock… one flew east, one flew west, one flew over the cuckoo's nest… O-U-T spells out… goose swoops down and plucks you out." This is where the title comes from, the cuckoo's nest being the psychiatric ward and McMurphy being the goose who plucks "us" out. The author of this novel is Ken Kesey, also the author of Demon Box and Sometimes a Great Notion. Kesey was born in La Junta, Colorado. He graduated from the University of Oregon, and later studied a Stanford. Kesey was head of a group name The Merry Pranksters, who traveled around the country staging happenings. Kesey's playful attitude is reflected in the main character, McMurphy, who is often pulling pranks in the psychiatric ward. Kesey wrote this novel expressing many of his views on life, character conflicts, using symbolism and other methods from this point in American literature.

A grim satire set among the patients and workers in a mental institution tells the story (narrated by an inmate) of an energetic con man who seeks institutionalization as a means of escaping the rigors of a prison work farm. Before long, in order to reduce the sexual and emotional impotence of the men at the institution, he began to challenge the dictatorial Nurse Ratched, irrevocably altering the destiny of those in the ward. The story is made up of series of skirmishes between McMurphy and Big Nurse. McMurphy became a hero, changing the life of the inmates, but paid with a lobotomy which turned him into a vegetable. Bromden, the narrator, performed the final act by smothering McMurphy with a pillow and running away to freedom.

Kesey shows many ideals of the Realistic period in literature in his novel, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. McMurphy is a low class felon that came from a prison to escape the work. Being an amoral troublemaker and a gambler put him on top of many situations. As McMurphy obtained a heart and tried to clean up his act in the hospital he lost his position and Mrs. Ratched gave him a lobotomy and showed us that the good person doesn't always win. Kesey used the Hero in the story, which is McMurphy, to bring out the weakness of the group, not just individual weaknesses. Kesey shows life in the asylum as objectively and truthfully as possible.

Kesey shows life in the ward as segregated, cliquish, like a school almost. Like detention in school, they have EST (Electric Shock Therapy) for disciplinary reasons. Schools have teachers and the ward has Nurse Ratched that needs total and complete order on her ward or she gets angry. This novel clarified my opinion that life can get worse after school is out.

Do my essay on Cuckoo CHEAP !

There are many people in Kesey's novel that deserves sympathy such as, Harding and Bromden and other patients, but the one that deserves the most is McMurphy. McMurphy is put in a place without any people he can be friends with and not take advantage of, he's around these incurable sicknesses and has to witness them every day, and he's in a everlasting physical and mental battle with Nurse Ratched. Through the first phases of his conflict with Nurse Ratched, McMurphy remained sane and he was still the "bull-goose looney" of the ward, but he was worn down by all the unnecessary Shocks and medicines and physical abuse the staff put him through. His characteristics of being the out-going "bull-goose looney" are evident in the first pages that describe his admission and one can see the evolution of his characteristics into a vegetable throughout the novel.

The setting is of large significance to the story. An asylum is one of the only places you can have, literally, a sane person in an insane asylum become leader of the all the insane people. Disturbed, a part of the ward, impacts the setting the most because that is what everyone is scared of, that is what is keeping all the patients in the ward. The ward was also good for showing a man that was at the beginning of the story so quiet and scared become cured of whatever his ailment was by letting him find himself through seeing that he doesn't need McMurphy in order be on his own.

Through the use of symbolism in One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, author Ken Kesey attempts to compare the antagonist McMurphy and Christ, and the hospitalized acutes and Christs followers. Many events lead to the sacrifice McMurphy offers up which ultimately saves the men on the ward. One of the events that depicts McMurphy as Christ is the fishing trip. McMurphy chooses twelve men to go on a fishing trip with him, just as Jesus and his twelve disciples. In the Bible Jesus picks his disciples because each posses a characteristic he's looking for just as McMurphy did when he chooses George to go on the fishing trip. McMurphy wants George to go because George has had past experience as a fishing boat captain. Another depiction of McMurphy as Christ is the experience with the electroshock therapy. McMurphy and Bromden are lead to the electroshock therapy room to get treated. McMurphy sacrifices himself to go first. Hes laid on a table thats shaped like a cross, They put the graphite salve on his temples. What is it? he asks. Conductant, the technician says. Anointest my head with Conductant. Do I get a crown of thorns?. McMurphy sacrifices his life for Bromden just as Christ sacrificed his life for many. McMurphy knew that if the men continued to act the way they were that nothing would ever change and none of the men would be able to leave the mental hospital. McMurphy acted in a way that allowed the men to grow mentally and start to question the way they had lived their lives on the ward. Then when McMurphy had a lobotomy everything changed. He was no longer the fun-loving, outgoing, enthusiastic man everyone remembered. He laid in a gurney all day long in the dayroom; eyes wide open staring into nothingness. McMurphy knew his offensive behavior would get him to this point sooner or later, but he was willing to do it in order to save the lives of many. Bromden could no longer accept McMurphy in this vegetable like state so one night as McMurphy slept Bromden took a pillow and suffocated him. Bromden kills McMurphy just as Pontius Pilate orders Christ to be crucified. McMurphy symbolizing Christ is the largest, most profound example, but there are still small things in the story that mean a great deal. Such as when Bromden didn't except McMurphy's hat, this symbolizes that the chief doesn't need Randle P. McMurphy to go on in the world.

Ken Kesey's attitude toward the American Dream is expressed by the way McMurphy fights the system and it all pays off when Chief Bromden is able to flee from the asylum. The beatniks of the 50's and the hippies of the 60's influenced Ken Kesey's attitude towards the American dream.

Abortion can be wrong in certain contexts but depending on what it is, it could be right. If there is something wrong with the baby a mother could decide not to have it as she wont be able to cope with the child when it becomes older but if she just doesnt want a baby for no reason then it is wrong and the women should go ahead with the pregnancy.

In 17, the Supreme Court's decision made it possible for women to get safe, legal abortions from well-trained medical surgeons, and therefore led to dramatic decreases in pregnancy-related injury and death ("abortion"). Now there is a new proposal to close abortion clinics. This proposal takes away the privacy rights of American women that are guaranteed by our Constitution. By closing abortion clinics the government is not only taking away women's rights, but is also punishing those whom want to exercise their right of a pro-choice woman.

Abortion clinics allow thousands of women every year to have abortions. Having the abortion should be woman's personal choice. By closing these clinics, there will be no providers to perform the operation, so the choice has already been made for them. Closing the clinics will increase the barriers of having an abortion. When there are too many obstacles, the right to make their own choice is taken away from them. In 17 the American Supreme Court ruled that Americans' right to privacy included "the right of a woman to decide whether to have children, and the right of a woman and her doctor to make that decision without state interference" ("abortion"). The Constitution says we have a right to privacy, so taking away a woman's chance to make decisions about her own body violates that right.

The American Civil Liberties Union defends the Constitution and peoples' rights.

ACLU has protected the rights of abortion for women, and in recent years has argued mayor cases opposing restrictions that deny woman access to reproductive health care ("ACLU"). Policy 6 states "The ACLU holds that every woman, as a matter of her right to the enjoyment of life, liberty, and privacy, should be free to determine whether and when to bear children."(The American Civil Liberties Union)

The closure of abortion clinics will be done with the purpose to reduce the number of abortions. This raises the question whether this will be an effective method or not. Before 17 abortions were illegal yet the number of women who sought abortions did not decrease ("abortion"). Before 17 many thousands of women died or suffered serious medical problems after attempting to perform their own abortions, or going to untrained doctors who performed cheap abortions with uncivilized methods or in unsanitary conditions (The Abortion Law Homepage.). If clinics are closed, women will still continue to attempt, and succeed, in ending unwanted pregnancies just like before 17. Women will risk their health and possibly even their lives. By keeping these abortions clinics open it ensures a higher probability that the women who do have abortions will be in a safe, sanitary environment, and therefore injuries will be fewer in number.

If clinics are shut, the waiting lists of abortion clinics in other countries will be much longer. Women will have to wait longer to get an abortion, and will be treated later in their pregnancy which is much more dangerous for the pregnant women.

Pro-life activists claim that the unborn baby is alive and has feelings when the heart begins beating. But, the heartbeat begins between the eighteenth and twenty-fifth day ("Fetus"). They also say that women who have abortions are "murderers". This problem could be solved by keeping abortion clinics open, because then the woman can be treated before the twenty fifth day when the fetus is not yet a living baby. She will not have to wait because of long waiting lists, but instead will have the abortion as soon as possible with as less psychological pain.

If a woman has to travel to another country to have a legal abortion, she will have to pay more money. She will now not only have to pay for the abortion itself, but also the traveling costs and that does not include the psychological costs as well. Not all people can afford these costs. So by keeping clinics open more women will have the chance to exercise their right and have their desired abortion. If a working woman or student suddenly has to leave the country, this means she will have to think of excuses and lies for an explanation. This is not fair to the woman, she should not have to explain herself to anyone, it is her body and therefore she can do what she wants, she does not need other people's consult.

Abortion clinics are not a "butcher's place" where young babies are murdered. They provide a choice for women whether or not to bring a child into this world.

What is worse taking away the life of an unborn child that is not even aware of life itself yet, or a mother bringing an unwanted child into this world, knowing that she will not be able to take care of it, and that her child will have to suffer from the poor circumstances in which she lives. As of now the woman has the ability to make that choice and save the child from poor, possibly abusive or hate filled environment. Personally I feel that living in a circumstance such as abuse is worse than the abortion of the fetus. Rape victims

should also be able to have an abortion because they know that if they were to keep the child, they would cringe when she thought about whom contributed to the other half of the child. The offspring will be a painful reminder to the rape victim. She did not choose to take the responsibility of a child and therefore should not have to pay the consequences. A woman who cannot love her child has no right to have a baby in the first place.

One option for women who are not able to take care of their baby is adoption. Yet she will have to carry the baby for nine months and then give it up. Not all women are able to do this physically or psychologically. After the pregnancy she will have to hope that their baby will find a good and loving home. And this is not always the case. The child will possibly have to suffer from living in orphanages waiting to get adopted. Adoption can not always be seen as a good solution to unwanted pregnancies.

The advantage of closing abortion clinics could be that woman will be forced to take the responsibility over their baby, and give their unborn child the right to life. But it can not be seen as something entirely positive. The mother will always regard the child as a "mistake" and will never love it the way she would have if she had wanted to keep the child. Getting an abortion does not always mean that the woman is only thinking of herself, she also thinks on behalf of her baby. Abortion clinics do not make the choice easier, nor do they force the woman into the surgery. People who are against abortion having the choice not to have one. It is not fair to take away the choice of people who do want one.

Location

Setting a location for manufacturing facilities, service outlets, or branch offices is a strategic decision. The location of a company's facilities is very important. When choosing a location, several factors are taken to account. That includes the company's operating costs, the prices it charges for goods and services, and its ability to compete in the marketplace. Facility location is the process of determining a geographic site for a firm's operations (Krajewski, 408).

When choosing a location, managers have to look at different factors. Managers weigh two conditions. The factor must be sensitive to location and the factor must have a high impact on the company's ability to meet its goals (Krajewski, 408). If any factor fails to meet any of the two conditions, managers usually disregard the factors. Managers divide the location factors into two dominant and secondary factors. The dominant factors are those that have a high impact on sales and costs, and those obtained from competitive priorities. Secondary factors are important also. Managers can choose to either lower or even ignore some of the factors if others are more important.

There are six dominant factors in manufacturing. Managers take a look at these factors when deciding where to locate. In order of importance, they are favorable labor climate, proximity to markets, quality of life, proximity to suppliers and resources, proximity to the parent company's facilities, and utilities, taxes, and real estate costs (Krajewski, 408). The first factor, a favorable labor climate, may be the most important factor in location decision-making. Labor climate is a function of wage rates, training requirements, attitudes toward work, worker productivity, and union strength (Krajewski, 408). In case of relocation, it is important that a favorable labor climate to be taken into consideration. The second dominant factor is proximity to markets. Locating close to markets is very important since sometimes, when manufacturing heavy products, outbound transportation rates can be high. For example, manufacturers of heavy goods emphasize proximity to their markets. Quality of life is the third dominant factor. Quality of life is a factor that can sometimes make the difference in location decisions; good schools, recreational facilities, cultural events, and an attractive life-style are all taken into consideration when determining quality of life (Krajewski, 410). The fourth factor, proximity to suppliers and resources is important to firms who are dependent on inputs of bulky materials. Since inbound transportation costs might become dominant, it is important to locate close to its suppliers and resources. Proximity to the parent company's facilities is the fifth factor. Utilities, taxes, and real estate costs are part of the last dominant factor in manufacturing.

The factors mentioned above not only apply to manufacturing but to services too, with one condition the impact that the location might have on sales and customer satisfaction (Krajewski, 410). The first dominant factor in services is proximity to customers. Location is the key factor in determining customer convenience. Transportation costs and proximity to markets is the next factor. It is important to warehousing and distribution operations. For example, with a warehouse nearby, inventories are closer to the customer. Delivery time can become a competitive advantage. Location of competitors is another factor. Management should not only consider the current location of competitors but also try to anticipate their reaction to the firm's new location (Krajewski 411). Avoiding established competition often pays.

Globalization

Globalization is the description of a business's development of facilities and operation around the world (Krajewski 401). Over the years, Ford Motor Co. has built production facilities overseas. Globalization results in more exports to and imports from other countries often called offshore sales and imports. Globalization of services is also widespread.

There are several reasons for globalization. The first one is that there are improved transportation and communication technologies. With new and improved communications technology and transportation, it is now easier from companies, like Ford, to break down the barriers of time and space between countries. For example, Ford has a plant in Korea (Ford Motor Sales and Service Korea). Air transportation can help move goods quickly when needed, from the U.S. to Korea, and vice versa, or other countries. Also communication technologies can help, for example, the president of Ford Korea communicate with someone from the U.S.

The second reason for globalization is that there are opened financial systems. This makes it easier for firms to locate where capital, supplies, and resources are cheapest.

The third reason is that there is increased demand for imports. Import penetration of the major economies is increasing as political barriers to international trade have crumbled (Krajewski 40). Penetration has been increased by locating production facilities in foreign countries because customer aversion to buying imports.

The fourth reason is that there are reduced import quotas and other trade barriers are avoided. The European Union (EU) and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) make trade between countries easier; so does GATT, a tariff-cutting world trade agreement and the U.S.-China Trade Relations with China (Krajewski 40). The World Trade Organization facilitates free trade.

There a several disadvantages to globalization. A firm may have to relinquish proprietary technology if it turns over some of its component manufacturing to offshore suppliers (Krajewski 40). Another disadvantage is that there may be political risks. Employee skills may be lower in foreign countries, requiring additional training time (Krajewski 40).

Layout Planning

Layout planning is planning that involves decisions about the physical arrangement of economic activity centers within a facility (Krajewski 445). The goal of layout planning is to allow workers and equipment to operate most effectively.

There are four questions that manager should ask before he can make any decision regarding physical arrangement. The first question is "what centers should the layout include?" Centers must be able to maximize productivity. The second question managers should ask is "how much space and capacity does each center need?" Managers should make sure there will be enough space. If there isn't enough space, productivity can be reduced and employees' privacy deprived. It can also cause health and safety hazard. The third question is "how should each center's space be configured?" The amount of space, its shape, and the elements in a center are interrelated (Krajewski 445). Providing a pleasing atmosphere should also be considered. The last question is "where should each center be located?" Productivity can be affected by location.

The location of a center has two dimensions relative location, which is the placemen of a center relative to other centers, and absolute location, the particular space that the center occupies within the facility (Krajewski 445). Both affect a center's performance.

Supply Chain Management

Supply chain management is the synchronization of a firm's processes and those of its suppliers to match the flow of materials, services, and information with customer demand (Krajewski 48). The automotive supply chain is among the most complex in the world. It includes a variety of suppliers, service providers, outsources, distributors, and dealers (Brown and Chackalackal 1). Many people view supply chain optimization primarily as an exercise in inventory reduction. But the ultimate goal is to garner higher profit margins or finished goods. (Paul ).

Customer Interface

The order-placement process involves the activities required to register the need for a product or service and to confirm the acceptance of the order. The internet has enabled firms to reengineer their order-placement process to benefit. The internet provides the following advantages for a firm's order-placement process.

Cost reduction is an advantage of order placement processes. Customers can select the products and services they want and place an order with the firm without actually talking to anyone (Krajewski 507). As part of the order placement process, a web page can allow customers to enter credit card information or purchase order numbers. Global access and pricing flexibility are two other advantages (Krajewski 507).

The order fulfillment process involves the activities required to deliver a product or service to a customer. This process might be called upon to address any of the competitive priorities falling under the categories of cost, quality, time, or flexibility (Krajewski 507). Devdutt Yellurkar, president and CEO of Yantra Corporation, said that "today order fulfillment processes extend far beyond the enterprise to include suppliers and logistics providers, typically spars multiple sales channels." (1)

The Internet provides a quick and efficient means to share information along the supply chain. Accurate information about customers' operations, such as current inventory positions, future demands and production schedules, or expected orders for the firm's products, enables the firm's order fulfillment process to better anticipate the future needs of its customers (Krajewski 507).

Inventory placement is a fundamental supply chain decision. The firm could keep the entire finished goods inventory at the manufacturing plant. Inventory pooling is a reduction in inventory and safety stock because of the merging of variable demands from customers (Krajewski 508). Another approach is to use forward placement. Forward placement means locating stock closer to customers at a warehouse, DC, wholesaler, or retailer. This can cause faster delivery times and reduced transportation costs.

Postponement is a tactic used by assemble-to-order and mass customization firms that refers to delaying the customizing of a product or service until the last possible moment (Krajewski 510).

Extremist/Terrorist

What exactly is terrorism? Well, most people would say "the threat or use of violence for political purposes by individuals or groups whether acting for or in opposition to established government authority when such actions are intended to shock, stun, or intimidate a target group wider than the immediate victims." Terrorism is violence against innocent noncombatants. Terrorism is a form of low intensity warfare.

All terrorist acts are crimes. Governments may also be terrorist. The motives of most terrorists are political, and terrorist actions are generally carried out in a way that will achieve maximum publicity. The perpetrators are usually members of an organized group, and unlike other criminals, they often claim credit for their acts. A terrorist act is intended to produce effects beyond the immediate physical damage it causes. All kinds of terrorists share an inability to see people as individuals rather than as representatives of a political or religious system; hence their willingness to kidnap, torture, and murder complete strangers in order to intimidate distant governments. For terrorists, no one (not even a child) is innocent. The use of terrorist tactics is spreading through out the world. The Rand Corporations chronology of international terrorism records incidents in 117 countries since 168. Approximately half of the recorded incidents have occurred in only 10 countries. Most of the incidents take place in Western Europe, followed by Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa then North America. Few incidents occur in Eastern Europe, Asia, or the Pacific Region.

Custom writing service can write essays on Extremist/Terrorist

There are many hypotheses that attribute the cause of terrorism to social, economic, cultural, technological, and geographical factors. There are many factors that contribute to an environment propitious for terrorism access to a global audience the news' media; the vulnerabilities of modern society, perceived injustice, deep-rooted ethnic, religious divisions; historical traditions of political violence; ideologies that condone violence; unresponsive or intensive governments; sharply circumscribed or ineffective security forces. Businessmen are also frequent targets of terrorists. Terrorists attack businessmen as symbols of economic systems they oppose or of foreign domination. They kidnap executives or threaten corporations to finance further terrorist operations. In the past 10 years, terrorists have collected between $15 million in ransom payments. Terrorists share a common demographic profile. The typical terrorist is male, although there are numerous notable exceptions, in his early twenties, single, from a middle or upper class urban family, well educated with some university training. Most terrorists are not crazy in the clinical sense and appear to share certain common attitudes.

Latin America is the third great center of terrorist incidents, accounting for approximately twenty percent of the events worldwide. Social, economic, and political turmoil have served to prolong existing patterns of insurgency, which have assumed terrorist dimensions in some countries (particularly Columbia, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Peru). There has been some spillover into Latin America from terrorism in the Middle East and Europe, particularly Iran and Libya. Cuba and Nicaragua provide the strongest encouragement and direct support for terrorist activities in other Latin American countries. In addition, Italian and possibly other leftist terrorists have found refuge in Nicaragua. The United States has identified over 0 planned attacks upon U.S. citizens or facilities abroad during the past year, which we are satisfied, have been preempted by improved intelligence, stronger security, and cooperation from other governments. Some $55 million has been spent to enhance physical and operational security of our diplomatic posts abroad in the past year. In fiscal year (FY) 186 and 187, budget requests for overall security resources total $1 million and $1 million respectively.

Then there's Extremist or terrorist. Extremists, particularly those engaged in paramilitary training, present a serious danger. They hate the government, they believe there are federal conspiracies, and are convinced an armed showdown is coming. The militia movement came under intense national security after the April 1, 15 bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City, when it was reported that two suspects, Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, had attended militia meetings in Michigan. In addition, prosecutors charged that McVeigh was motivated out of anger at the Federal government for its handling of the Branch Dravidian Confrontation in Waco, Texas (an issue that has been one of the chief rallying cries of the militia movement). Many hard-core militia men believe that the U.S. government itself committed the bombing to create an excuse for further depriving citizens of their constitutional rights.

A survey by the Anti-Defamation League reveals that the militia movement has spread. Militias have been found to be operating in at least 40 states, with membership reaching about 15,000. Women's health clinics have been savaged by domestic terrorism. Since 177, there have been at least 40 clinical bombings, 100 instances of arson, 400 death threats and stalking, 11 attempted murders, and 5 murders, according to surveys by the National Abortion Federation and the Feminist Majority Foundation. Antiabortion vandalism too, occurs in patterns in the early 10's, scores of clinics around the country experienced near-identical butyric-acid attacks within hours or days of one another. Both groups, antiabortion extremist and militia movements harp on common themes the need to take up arms to defend so called persecuted Christians, antifeminism, anti-Semitism, and antigay dogma and an attempt at a theological justification for a fundamentalist Christian takeover of the United States. Some militia members view the governments' legalization of abortion as one of its prime offenses. Some violent antiabortion groups employ antigovernment invective.

Political debates in a democracy, whether over abortion or the size and reach of government, must be settled by the ballot box, not the cartridge box. Although there are different types of terrorism, one common thread in all of these dreadful crimes is that the innocent suffer. Terrorists have victimized too many people. It is fueled by extreme hatred. Those who harbor such hatred live in a world that is colored by bigotry, shaded by conspiracy, and framed by ignorance. It takes a great deal of effort and requires cooperation by other nations to make progress against world terrorism. With your support and that of other sectors of the American public, we will continue to make progress and the chances for still more success will continue to improve.

Industrial design

In 10 a team of New Zealand architects had the chance of designing the Museum of New Zealand. Jassmax the winning team embarked on this architect adventure. Pete Bossley being the main architect had the chance of designing one of, if not the most significant buildings in New Zealand of the century. For it was to be designed for the people of New Zealand. A building that was representational of New Zealanders, to give an identity through the use of architecture. A monument that resembled the bicultural and diverse range of people that occupy the land of New Zealand.

In my essay I will be discussing the changes in the way that society views the museum in today's times and discussing the comparisons to that of the 1th century museums. Also looking at the physical change in appearance and the function of a museum in the modern world of today. Comparing Te Papa to the likes of the Poimdou Centre in Paris and the early Louver.

The overall design of Te Papa is trying to represent a nation. It is trying to represent the notion of a "bicultural" country. This is similar to the functions of museums in the 1th century. The New Zealand government and designers are using the museum as a tool to create an icon for the people of the land. Te Papa will "powerfully express the total culture of New Zealand and present the 'bicultural nature of the country, recognizing the mana and significants of each of the two mainstreams of tradition and culture heritage, and provide the means for each to contribute to a statement of the nation's identity"(Bossley 18, pg).

. Looking at some of the ways in which Pete Boss ley has gone about creating this 'bicultural' museum. Through the way in which the building has been positioned on the waterfront has symbolic attributes to both the Maori and the European for both used this land to launch boats/waka here. So here we could say that the very placement of the building has great significants to the two cultures. The Marae has been specifically placed in accordance to traditions of other Maori that are in New Zealand today. "The Maori exhibition area and marae were orientated overlooking the sea towards the rising sun and the direction of most openness, with respects to the siting traditions frequently followed in location of the iwi marae throughout New Zealand"(Bossley 18, p.8) The pakeha exhibitions have been placed facing the city. Laid out in an ordered fashion that is similar to the streets of a normal European city. The way in which there is two cultures on display in the museum is a rather big difference to that of the Louver in Paris, but it's bigger meaning of the building itself in the way that it's purpose is to create a national identity is very similar. "No building type can match the museum for symbolic or architectural importance. France's revolutionaries for instance, commonly referred to the Louvre as an institution dedicated to the glory of the nation"(Davis, p.14).

The Museum of New Zealand (Te Papa) has been designed to accommodate for the Contemporary society that we live in today. People don't want to only have a place were historical artefacts are preserved, but something far more interactive and invigorating. The public wants to have an experience. To be almost consumed by the journey through the contemporary museum. With the massive viewing of TV, the extreme amount of information via computer has forever changed the public of today. It's pushed boundaries to limits and this I feel has reflected onto the public in a monumental way. These influences are why I think that the public of today has such a higher expectation of not only a trip to a museum but of all facets of life. "The information era has drastically changed the ideologies of scientists and the common domain"(Crofton, 10 p.). Te Papa is a place for not only precious artefacts but a place were you can go and source intellectual information and at the same time be surrounded by history. "The New Building was to house four major galleries, an active marae, an auditorium for 50 people, classrooms, resource centres, conservation areas, and a myriad of spaces to house subsidiary functions"(Bossley, 18 p.) Te Papa has become a place for pleasure and relaxation by providing the people with cafes and lounges to sit and enjoy a quiet coffee and chat to their peers. Creating a comfortable space to be in. They have created an atmosphere where no longer do you go to the museum to only admire the extravagant pieces of artwork, but to have a total experience of the museum itself. This is a contradiction to the early traditions of the Louvre. "The Early Louvre was committed to accessibility and education, not to the decoration, not to preserving the "aura" of either the crown or art itself"(Davis, 10, p.16). But when comparing Te Papa to the Pompidou Centre (170s) Designed by Piano and Rogers/Richard Rogers partnership the ideas are in very close proximity. As the Pompidou was a 'new' type of building in that it catered for the contemporary public of it's time "The basement level featured the centre de Cretion Inustrille, devoted to displays of architecture and design. Cinemas, restaurants, and cafes appeared throughout the building, and nearby in an adjacent wing, a centre for new music opened, directed by the famous conductor Pierre Boulez. In no sense was a visit to the Pompidou Centre comparable to attendance of any conventional museum"(Davis, 10, p.8). Here we can see the difference in changes in the way that the museum functions to the traditions like that of the Louvre.

The architecture itself I feel has failed to recognize aspects of the Maori or tried to suggest the traditional carvings and marks too subtly. Here Bossely explains "rather than a seemingly carved addition. We also intended that such reference would be within the larger language of the building, rather than a potential patronizing enlargement of traditional-looking forms"(Bish, 18, p.18). Viewing it from the front as most people do for the back is obscured, this vision of viewing it as a whole is lost. On the other hand the European influence is rather distinct. With the comparison of the spandal art work, the geometric flat plains of colour to modernists such as Gerrit Reitfeild and Pete Mondrian. Almost the entire front of the building is geometric in its lines and form. There is no evidence of Maori traditional carvings, lines, curves or symbols that even suggests they have attempted to incorporate the culture of the Maori into the architecture of the building.

So to conclude my essay I feel that Te Papa is a product of its contemporary diverse culture. The public has also moulded its function. It is no longer like that of the traditional museums of the 1th century in appearance but is still a building that holds a national sense of pride. The function to the people of New Zealand is much more than that of just being a Museum to store artefacts. It's an experience of a culture that is alive at this very moment.

Hazards of Mobile Cell Phone Radiation

In 14, there were 16 million cell phone users in the U.S. alone. As of July 00, there were more than 150 million in the U.S, and over 750 million worldwide. The word radiation is often thought of as referring to the emanations from radioactive materials and X-rays. However, when scientists use the word radiation, they are usually referring to the electromagnetic radiation (EMR). Electromagnetic radiation consists of waves of electric and magnetic energy moving together and can be transmitted from sources such as cell phones, television transmissions, light from the sun, as well as X-ray machines.

Two types of electromagnetic radiation are ionizing and non-ionizing. Ionizing radiation contains enough electromagnetic energy to strip atoms and molecules from the tissue and alters chemical reactions in the body. X-rays are a form of ionizing radiation. We know they cause radiation, which is why we wear the lead vest when X-rays are taken of our bodies. Non Ionizing radiation is typically safe; therefore, humans take advantage of its properties. The concern of non ionizing radiation is that it could have long-term effect. It causes some heating effect, but usually not enough to cause any long-term damage to the tissue. Microwave radiation, infrared light, and visible light are forms of non ionizing radiation. Radio-Frequency (RF) radiation is a component of non ionizing radiation. Cell phones emit RF radiation from the movement of electrical charges in the antenna. Radio-frequency radiation has the ability to heat human tissue, especially when exposed in high levels. Damage to tissue can be caused by exposure to RF radiation because the body is not equipped to dissipate excessive amounts of heat. The eyes are particularly vulnerable due to the lack of blood flow in that area.

Reported diseases and disorders associated with RF radiation are Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Brain Cancer, Brain Tumors, Epilepsy, Asthma, Leukemia, and Diabetes. When it comes to the potential risks of cell phone damage and DNA, "the question is not" If cell phone radiation can cause DNA damage! "The question is" can your body repair DNA damage without mutating genes. Studies show that DNA, single and double strand, breaks at levels below the current FCC exposure standard. There are also numerous complications attributed to RF radiation such as blood pressure increases, migraines, heart disease, kidney damage, hair loss, disorientation, numbness, insomnia, swelling, and twitching.

Custom Essays on Cell Phone Radiation

How do we reduce the potential risks of RF radiation exposure, particularly in cell phones? The number one answer is to use a hands-free head set. Shielding devices are available from certain manufacturers. You may also want to purchase a phone that places the antenna as far away from the user as possible. For some consumers, limiting the usage to a few minutes is an option. Use the cell phone in open spaces as often as possible, and limit phone calls in enclosed places. It is recommended that children do not use cell phones. Actual photos have been presented that compare radiation entering an adult brain and radiation entering a five-year-old child's brain. The depth of penetration to the brain is more in the child than the adult.

The manufacturers and cell phone industry basically dismisses all current research. The industry is terrified of liability should significant health risks be found. They say the studies are poorly conducted, irrelevant, or use whatever argument not to receive media attention. The Cellular Telephone Industry Association (CITA) discourages additional research. Every cell phone model has to be tested and meet Federal Communication Commission (FCC) standards before it can be sold in the United States.

The manufacturers primarily do testing themselves, which creates some uncertainty about the results. The exposure limit is based on the overall heating effects of radio frequency energy and the specific absorption rate (SAR), which measures the energy absorbed by the human body. Cell phone are allowed to emit a maximum SAR of 1.6 watts per kilogram as measured over one gram of body tissue. In 000, manufacturers were ordered to place labels on cell phones disclosing radiation levels.

Education is the key to determining if cell phone radiation concerns are worth the risk to you as an individual. At this point there is very little work on cell phone safety being conducted in the U.S. Almost all the major research is going on in Europe. Keep informed of the findings involved in the research. The more you know the better off you are. The computer offers many websites that lists health concerns, statistics, scientific studies, and agencies to contact if you have questions or concerns.

Studies show that significant high levels of RF radiation can interfere with electronic devices. This problem is more likely to occur with pulsed energy, which characterizes digital cellular telephones. Studies have shown that hand held cellular phones can effect the operation of heart pacemakers if the phone is placed directly over the device and there have been reports of interference with hearing aid. Individuals with electronic medical devices should consult with their physician and/or the phone manufacturer to determine what precautions should be taken. This is the reason for the non-use of cellular phones in hospitals today.

Laboratory rodent analysis plays a key role in determining potential radiation exposure to humans. In a test consisting of six laboratory rats, three rats were exposed for two hours to a power level of 0.1 watt of power. The other three rats were not exposed. Cell phones typically operate at a peak output of 0.6 watts. Examination of the animal's brain tissue 50 days later revealed that up to percent of the brain cells of the rats that received cell phone radiation exposures of 0.1 watt were dead or dying. The other group of rats showed no brain cell death. Cautions were noted that humans could face negative consequences from cell phone use in the long run.

Some countries use high-tech magnetic wood blocks to line its' building walls to battle against cell phone users on their premises. These wooden blocks absorb the radiation signal and make it impossible to use a mobile phone in any room lined with it. They are illegal in the United States, Britain, and Australia. Levi's is preparing to launch a pair of "anti radiation" trousers. The trousers will include a mobile phone pocket with "radiation-reducing" lining.

Today it is still unclear if cell phones actually cause any significant damage to the human body. Studies continue to contradict one another on the issue. Additional studies may shed some light on the true effects of cell phone radiation, but will likely confuse consumers even further. In the meantime, million of cell phone users take whatever risks may be involved in using the devices. Some have called the use of cell phones the biggest biological experiment in history.
