Synopsis-

Eric Smith, a thirteen-year-old boy brutally murdered an innocent five-year-old boy named Derrick Robie. Derrick was heading to the park one day and Eric told the young boy he knew a short cut. Eric guided Derrick into the woods; their Eric choked and beat Derrick to death with a large rock, he then proceeded to sexually abuse Derrick's lifeless body! Eric Smith eventually confessed to the murder, was tried as an adult, and sentenced to nine years in prison.

Why did Eric kill?

That is a question we will probably never know the answer to. Actually, the only person who might know would be Eric himself, however, I'm not sure if even he really knows. I'm not sure why Eric thought killing another person was the answer to his problems, but I think I know why he chose Derrick Roby. Eric was an odd looking boy, who struggled in school, mentally and socially. Eric was also raised in a questionable environment, with claims by Eric's stepsister of mental and sexual abuse by the hands of their stepfather. While on the other hand, Derrick was an attractive, smart, athletic boy, who was loved by everyone. I believe the prosecutor for the Robie family said it best, "Eric killed the symbol of all the things he was not."

Cheap University Papers on Why did eric smith kill?

Was it Premeditated?

This question is also very difficult to answer. I guess it depends on your definition of premeditated. Webster's Dictionary defines premeditated as, characterized by fully conscious willful intent and a measure of forethought and planning. Did Eric plan to murder Derrick days in advance; did he plan every aspect of how he would commit the crime? No, I don' think so! But personally, I believe a person can premeditate any act with little time. I believe Eric was fully conscious with willful intent, and with in minutes he decided to kill Derrick Robie.

At age 1, should he have been tried as an adult? Why or why not?

Yes, it was the right decision for Eric to be tried as an adult. Unless, a person suffers from some type of serious learning disability, by age 1 a person should have a good enough understanding of right and wrong, to know that taking another persons life is wrong. The only other reason why a person might not know that killing is wrong is because they were never taught; therefore, the parents would be at fault. I don't think that is the case in this story; however, I do believe parents should be held accountable for, their child's actions if those actions are a result of poor parenting.

What do you think about how the prosecution and defense handled the case?

There seemed to be some controversy over how Eric's confession was obtained by the police. However, the prosecution was able to convince the judge to allow it. I think that was a crucial piece of evidence, because it revealed Eric's mind set the day he murdered Derrick. I don't think the defense had much to work with, so they did the best they could with what they had.

What do you think Eric's emotional and mental state was?

I think Eric was emotionally exhausted, confused, frustrated, angry, depressed, and desperate for a cure for his pain. However, these are all emotions experienced by millions of people on a daily basis, and none are an acceptable excuse for murder.

When you heard about the rage disorder, did it impact your thoughts in any way? How?

Yes, it did impact my thoughts. It made me feel that more confident that I was right to think Eric should be tried as an adult and sentenced to years in prison. I imagine there are millions of people who suffer from rage disorder. Just because you have a hard time controlling your rage, doesn't mean you should get a free pass to murder.

What did you think about the biological theory as it pertained to his low set ears/hair?

To be brutally honest, I thought it was a pile of #@$!

Applying the Classical theory, do you think Eric chose to kill?

With out a doubt! The core thought of the Classical Theory is that "people exist in a world with free will and make their own rational choices, although they have a natural tendency toward self-interest and pleasure."(Criminological Theory pg.) The Positive theory would have you believe Eric was born a potential murderer, which might be true, and society reinforced his biology and intensified his desire to kill, which is also possible, however, to believe that Eric has no moral responsibility, as claimed by the Positive theory, is absurd! Those followers of the positive theory believe the answer to crime is science and rehabilitation. Does Eric need and deserve psychiatric treatment? Sure! And he'll have plenty of time for that during and after his sentence is complete!

Do you agree with the Verdict?

I would like to have seen a longer sentence with a combination of psychiatric treatment

Put yourself in the role of the defense and prosecution, what would you have done differently?

Prosecution- I wouldn't change a thing

Defense-I would of thought twice about taking the case!

Episode IV A New Hope was the first of all Star Wars movies to be shown. it's success and popularity made possible the production of two sequels and recently two prequels. It tells the story of Luke Skywalker, a boy from Tatooine, and his entry to the Rebel Alliance and his realization of the " Force" in him.

The movie starts with Princess Leah's capture by Darth Vader. She stores the empires secret plans on a droid (robot) named RD along with a message to Obi Wan Kenobi before she is abducted. RD escapes in a pod accompanied by another robot CPO. The two somehow end up in the moisture farm of Owen and Beru Lars, Luke's uncle and aunt who have raised him as a son. Luke accidentally sees the message while cleaning RD and heads of in search for a certain Ben Kenobi, thinking him to be a relative of Obi Wan's. Ben rescues Luke from Tusken Raiders and they both go to Ben's house. There they find that Ben is actually Obi Wan Kenobi, and Luke is told that his father was killed by Darth Vader and his given his father's old lightsaber. Luke and Obi Wan hire a smuggler named Han Solo to fly them to rescue Leah. They end up entering a giant space station called the "Death Star". Luke, Obi Wan, Han Solo, and the two droids enter the Death Star disguised as the soldiers of the empire or "Stormtroopers". They rescue Leah but are found out, and the party along with Leah rush back to the Millennium Falcon (Han Solo's ship). Meanwhile Obi Wan Kenobi faces Darth Vader in a lightsaber duel to distract Vader from the rescue team. To allow the Millennium Falcon to escape, Obi Wan sacrifices himself and is killed by Vader. The millennium Falcon goes to the Rebel base and a plan is drawn to destroy the Death Star. Rebel pilots riding on X-wings and Y-wings attack the Death Star and its fleet of Tie-Fighters. Luke under Obi Wan's guidance through the Force destroys the Death Star. In the end Luke, Han Solo, and his partner Chewbacca are rewarded for their service to the Rebel Alliance.

Episode V The Empire Strikes Back is the second of the Star Wars trilogy. Though the movie's ending is less than satisfying, it provides the setting for the final battle between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker.

At the start of the movie the Empire led by Darth Vader, attacks the Rebel base at Hoth. The Rebel Alliance escapes with losses, and Luke goes to Dagobah in search of a Jedi Master Yoda. Luke finds Yoda who trains him in the force. Meanwhile Darth Vader employs the help of "Bounty Hunters" including the feared Boba Fett to capture Han Solo and Leah. Boba Fett traps them at Cloud City with the aid of Darth Vader and Han solo's friend Lando Calrissian. Luke sensing his friends' plight stops training to rescue his friends. Luke is too late to save Han Solo who gets trapped in Carbonite and taken by Boba Fett to Jabba The Hutt. Leah escapes with Chewbacca and the two droids with the help of Lando who take Han's ship the Millennium Falcon. Luke meets up with Darth Vader and faces him in a lightsaber battle. Darth Vader cuts Luke's hand off and goes on to tell Luke that he is his son, "Luke I am your father". Luke falls down from Cloud City and is rescued by the Millennium Falcon. The movie ends with Luke's hand being replaced robotically and a plan being hatched to save Han Solo.

Episode VI The Return Of The Jedi is the last of the trilogy, and is the finale to the battle between Luke and his father Darth Vader. The movie also shows the beginning of the end of the Empire and the death of Emperor Palpatine.

Luke Skywalker, Leah, Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian, and the two droids RD and CPO all go to Tatooine to rescue Han Solo who was delivered to Jabba the Hutt in carbonite. There they are all captured and are about to be fed to the Sarlaac pit when Luke frees himself and saves them. Leah, who has been turned into Jabba's slave girl, chokes Jabba with her chain and also escapes. The party, along with Han Solo, escape from the Sarlaac. Luke then proceeds to go back to Dagobah to continue training, only to return to a dying Yoda. Meanwhile the Rebel Alliance makes plans to destroy a new Death Star being built. While at Dagobah, Yoda tells Luke about Vader being his true father, and about Luke having to face him. Luke returns to the Rebel Alliance to help destroy the Death Star, which is protected by a shield in the forest moon of Endor. They quickly dispatch a team, which include Luke, Leah, Han Solo, Chewbacca, the two droids, and some rebel commandos to destroy the shield. Luke is captured by Stormtroopers and is taken to Darth Vader. On Endor, the rest of the party runs into the Ewoks who help them in destroying the shield. With the shield down Rebel fighters, with the Millennium Falcon piloted by Lando attack the Death Star. Inside, Luke and Darth Vader clash lightsabers while Emperor Palpatine watches. Luke tries to turn Darth Vader from the dark side but is forced to fight his father. Luke cuts off Vader's hand, only to see that it is also robotic. Palpatine, seeing that Luke won't turn to the dark side shoots at Luke with "force lightning". The helpless Luke is nearly dead when Vader lifts Palpatine and throws him down a shaft to his death. A hurt Vader is helped by Luke as explosions around the Death Star happen caused by the rebel fighters. Luke helps his father remove his mask, and sees Vader's true face. Luke escapes back to Endor with his father's dead body just as the Death Star explodes. On Endor, Luke cremates his father then joins the celebration at the Ewok village.

World Peace

Today in the world there is no such thing as world peace. All around the world there are many accounts of terrorism, war, and many other sorts of violent behavior. Such acts like the D.C. sniper, or the September 11th attack on America. Just go to prove this point.

On October 10th, 00, the D.C. sniper, allegedly known as John Allen Muhammad began a shooting rampage that lasted nearly three weeks. His first victim was taken on October the 10th, followed by twelve others who were shot and killed or wounded severely. The police involved were on a manhunt for nearly twenty days trying to find the sniper, and but had no evidence against him except for the letters, and bullets that were left behind at the areas of the shooting. The reasons the man was found was because of routine vehicle checks that police were doing in the area because of he shootings, and the tip from a man made after he saw the sniper. He has yet to be prosecuted in court for his crimes against the states, and is still undergoing court proceedings.

On September 11th, 001 members from the group known as the Al Qaeda, hijacked four American passenger airplanes. One of the planes was crashed into the pentagon, killing over a hundred people and wounding almost another hundred people. Two of the other planes were crashed into the World Trade Center buildings, one into each. The buildings collapsed after some time, which resulted in the deaths of thousands of Americans in the buildings, and also the passengers on the airplane. The fourth plane was intended for the White House, but crashed in Shanksville after the passengers on the plane stormed the cockpit and overthrew the terrorists, this caused the plane to crash, since no one could fly the plane.

After the attack on America, the Americans decided to go to war against parts of Afghanistan to fight the Taliban government who had been responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans. The Americans bombed most of the territory that the Taliban held, and sent in ground troops to destroy the complicated networks of tunnels to eliminate any of the Taliban that might still be around in the area. The Americans suffered approximately 0 casualties, while the Taliban's forces were destroyed.

In a Moscow theatre earlier this week, 750 people were taken hostage by a group of Chechen rebels. The rebels were demanding an end to the war in the breakaway republic. The Chechen rebels had the place tied down with explosives at most exits, and themselves as well, to prevent anyone from entering or leaving the building. The Chechen rebels held the citizens hostage for 58 hour before any action was put into motion. Prior to Moscow's Special Forces storming the theatre, The special forces used the ventilation system to induce a knock out gas into the theatre. The aerosol gas compound killed 117 of the hostages, and hospitalized another 184 hostages. The Special Forces killed about 50 of the rebels after the storming of the theatre.

Today, the American army is training their soldiers for street combat, which they are going to pursue in the near future. The military is preparing them because they plan to be invading Iraq for the problems they have been causing. However, the United Nations is postponing the Americans from attacking until they have came to an agreement that America should be allowed to go into that country. However, in the meantime, the military is being trained in mock cities around the country, until they are prepared, and obligated to go into Iraq.

These are the reasons that I believe there is no world peace today. I do not think that there will be world peace for many years to come, based on the actions of the people of their countries, and the governments that represent them. However, with the United Nations in place, it will keep wars from escalating to drastically, thus going to prove that there is some safeness in the world.

My interpretation of this quote is based on the combination of all my past experiences in this world. Yet none of my advances in life have ever been based on certainty. Indeed, my core belief in myself has oft been destroyed by the sting of uncertainty. In this illusion of life - where uncertainty is the only certainty - how can I form opinions based exclusively on certainty? Is an appeal to the real a realistic tool to employ whence all is unreal anyhow?

In finding the one true logic from which one forms opinions, it may be necessary to acknowledge value in illusion. Descarte states that in this dreaming illusory state we have found the "pleasant illusion." I question this why may our "peaceful sleep" in illusion by followed by "hard labour" when we awake? Life is hardly a pleasant illusion. Or is it? My continued suffering and hardships is the certainty from which I have reasoned and hence assented to this opinion of mine.

And does not the thought propounded by Descartes - that one will "toil not in the light, but amid the inextricable darkness of the problems…now raised" by questioning this illusion - help to maintain the existence of illusion? Fear of further hardships encourages one to remain trapped as a "prisoner" of this illusion. Such fear maintains the trap of illusory existence, until one day we transform our opinions.

But how can one form an opinion based on certainty, if everything is inherently uncertain? Descartes argues that it must as least "be admitted that certain other even simpler and more universal things are real" even if ones body parts are imaginary. So what can be found to be real? If the source of the illusion is something inherently certain, being God, then surely the certainty must flow through into the illusion, like the electricity flows through wires and illumines lights.

Write my Essay on 'Reason now leads me to think that I should hold back my assent from opinions which are not completely certain and indubitable' (Descartes in the First Meditation). Is this correct? for me

Descartes assumes that deception is bad, that some "malicious demon of the utmost power and cunning" is deceiving him through illusion. Could not deception be good and also the only means to realising truth for oneself? Finding no certainty, Descartes concludes he can only form "highly probably opinions." This, he thinks, is the only way to find logic in this world, and is more useful than denial.

Finding that one true logic to explain on what grounds one should assent to opinions is, it seems, an illusion in itself.

I found an article on free trade. I would like to tell you more about it. I will start by telling you about what it was about. I will show you some examples on how it could affect us in the U.S. Next I would like to share my option on the article. I will give you some example on how this article may or may not affect my current job. Finally I will tell you what type of international work I've done in the past.

I went online to the Phoenix website and found an article on free trade. It talked about breaking out all over of free trade. It stated that beginning July, European exports will for the first time clear Mexico customs as freely as those coming from the United States and Canada. You might think well they have joined the NAFT but they did not. But in many respects it might as well be a member because they have the same rights. It is called EU-Mexico free trade pact, that both of them agreed to late last year. European exporters now have many benefits-including lower tariffs, investment opportunities in financial services and telecommunications and protection of intellectual property in Mexico that were once reserved for U.S. firms.

The article also said that many other countries are talking to each other to have more free trade. For example it talked about Japan they are talking to South Korea and Singapore about free trade. Australia, New Zealand and a number of other are also thinking about free trades. The United States are also in the loop, a few years ago President Clinton Administration was working on a deal that would cover the entire Western Hemisphere by 005.

Some people say that it would be a good affect to have free trade other don't like the idea. A few years ago Mr. Charlene Barshefsky had hopes to launching a free-trade negotiation with Australia, New Zealand, Chile, and Singapore, but the Treasury Department did not like that idea they said it would threaten future global trade talks. Overall I think free trade will help the U.S. but we need to export a lot more things so we can balances.

This article was very informative on free trade. I learned a lot about what countries are trying to have more free trade. It also mentions that we would have global trade but that's very hard to believe. I don't think that we can ever have all the counties agree on global free trade. I think we will have a lot more counties that are going to be willing to do more free trades but it will not be any time soon. Just look at what happen with the U.N. every one did not agree and we the U.S. still went to war.

With my current job free trade would help a lot it would make the cell phone less expensive for the customers. I work at Cricket Communications, I sale cell phones. Most of the phones that Cricket offers are imported from other counties. I think if we had free trade the phone would cost us a lot less. Right now the phones are at least one to two hundred dollars. I don't deal too much with buying the phone but I know it would save us more money if we had free trade.

The only type of international work I've done is with my dad business. He owes two stores and sets up at the flea markets around here. He goes to Mexico and buys more of his merchandise. He sales all kinds of leather goods, for example boots, belts, hats, and many other things. He goes to Mexico about every other month. Some time he goes to T. J. to pick it up and the other times he goes to Leon, Guanajato to order the boots. I used to go with him once a year but know my bother goes with him. We have to get paper to bring the boots over but most of the time it not hard at all. The last time they went to pick up the boots the border was harder because of all the war and everything that's going on it took him about three hours to past the border they search the whole truck but other than that it was no big deal.

and refuses to change. This short story explains Emily, her mystified

ways and the townsfolks sympathetic curiosity.

The plot of the story is mainly about Miss Emilys attitude about

change. On the first of the year they mailed her a tax notice. February came

and there was no reply. They wrote her a formal letter asking her to call the

sheriffs office at her convenience. A week later the mayor wrote her

herself, offering to call or to send his car for her, and received in reply a

note on paper of an archaic shape, in a thin, flowing calligraphy in faded

ink, to the effect thats he no longer went out at all. The tax notice was

enclosed, without comment. (18). Miss Emily was convinced that she had no

taxes in Jefferson because before the Civil War the South didnt have to pay

taxes and since her father had made a contribution to the town of a generous

amount, Colonel Sartoris, mayor at that time had remitted her taxes, she felt

that that promise or rather gift still stood good. After her fathers death

she went out very little; after her sweetheart went away, people hardly saw

her at all.(10). Miss Emily might have stayed out the public eye after

those two deaths because she was finally alone, something she in her life was

not used to. Emilys father never let her alone and when he died Homer Baron

was a treat she was never allowed to have. Miss Emilys stubborn attitude

definitely came from her fathers strict teachings.

The characters of this story are very briefly mentioned, Miss Emily

and Mr. Homer Barron are the two main characters described. Miss Emily was

described as a short, fat, aged and mysterious women during her later years.

Miss Emily had been through much and had seen many generations grow before

and around her. This brings to reason her strong Confederate beliefs. Homer

Barron; on the other hand was quite the opposite, A Yankee-a big, dark,

ready man, with a big voice and eyes lighter than his face,(11). Homer

described himself as man who couldnt be tied down. This had to be a terrible

opposition for Miss Emily. Towards the end of the story Emily seems to prove

him wrong.

The setting of this passage is highly essential because it defines

Miss Emilys grasp of ante-bellum ways. This story take place throughout the

Reconstruction Era from the late 1800s to the early 100s in Jefferson,

Mississippi. Jefferson was just one of the many Southern towns which was

reformed by Northern reconstruction. The confederate quickly deteriorated

without free labor to aid their farms and plantations. Miss Emily refused to

allow modern change into her desolate life. For example she refused to let

the newer generation fasten metal numbers above her door and attach a mailbox

when Jefferson got free mail service. This reflects Miss Emilys unyielding

persona caused by her fathers treatment when she was young. When Miss

Emilys death occurred the newer Jefferson generations were left without an

ante-bellum perspective.

A Rose for Emily is told through the eyes of the townspeople which

is an example of limited omniscient; a narrator inside the work telling the

story. Faulkner expressed a lot of the residents opinions towards Emily and

her familys history. They mention old lady Wyatt, her great aunt who had

gone completely mad. These opinions seem to come from female members of the

town because they have a nosy approach. At first we were glad Miss Emily

would have an interest, because the ladies all said, Of course a Grierson

would not think seriously of a Northerner, a laborer.(11). The ladies

continue to throw sympathy towards Miss Emily, although she never hears it.

She is slightly aware of the faint whispers that began when her presence

draws near. Gossip and whispers might have been the causes of her ghastly

behavior.

The storys theme is simple, Miss Emily cannot accept the fact that the times

One crisp fall day, after school had started up again for the year, Abigail James decided that she was going to go for a walk on the grounds behind her residence. As she walked she enjoyed listing to the birds chirping and the water flowing it made Abigail feel peaceful. She soon came upon a small waterfall that was breath taking. As she was admiring the scenery she saw a person across the river. She walked closer to the water and noticed that the person that she was seeing was Nicholas Parsons her boyfriend, who attended the same university as her.

There was something really strange about Nicholas; he was wearing an orange coat. Which is strange because he never wears orange he is too conservative for that. Also Abigail's image of him was fuzzy. She shouted hello to him but he didn't reply and a couple of minutes he disappeared. With that Abigail leaves to head for home.

Ms. James returns to her residence and starts some of her many assignments. As she is doing them she can't stop thinking about Nicholas and why he was so rude to her and where he disappeared too. Abigail takes a break from her schoolwork and calls Nicholas; she demands an answer to why he didn't talk to her at the waterfall. Nicholas explains that he was nowhere near the waterfall as a matter of fact he didn't know it existed and besides that he had classes all morning. Mr. Parsons tells Abigail that she probably isn't getting enough sleep and that maybe she should go take a nap because she is seeing things. With that Abigail gets really offended and hangs up on Nick.

The following day Abigail and Nicholas decide that they should go for a hike on the weekend so she can show him the waterfall. When the weekend arrives Abigail and Nicholas pack there bags so they can go on their hike. When they leave Abigail notices that Nicholas is wearing an orange coat, when she questions him about it he says that it's a safety precaution because it would be easier to find him if he were to get lost. During the hike the couple talked about many things. As they were walking Nicholas trips over a small tree. When Abigail goes to help him up he proposes to her, she accepts the proposal and they continue on their hike except for now the conversation is more loving and she is wearing an engagement ring on her finger. Now they start talking about wedding plans and when they want would like to get married and whom they would invite.

When Abigail and Nicholas get to the waterfall she suggests that they stop there and eat there lunch. Nicholas finishes his lunch first and he decides to explore the water and see if it has fish. As he creeps closer to the edge Abigail warns him to be careful cause she knows that he can't swim. Before she has the words out of her mouth he trips in a small rock and falls right into the water. Abigail jumps up and runs towards the water to save her fianc. She flies into the water but it's to late. Nicholas has already drowned. As she watches he fianc gets pulled down the rived by the rapids she starts to cry historically. When Ms. James fells strong enough she walks back to her school and mournfully tells everyone what happened. Search and rescue recover the body and the only reason they found him was because they could see the orange coat. Abigail is to saddened to look at him she is too depressed to even go to the funeral.

Once a year Abigail returns to that waterfall to mourn the loss of Nicholas Parsons. When she does his ghost, watching her from across the river, always visits her. The image is the same one that she saw that first time that she was there that day by herself and also it is the last image she has of Nicholas before he fell into the water.

A number of years later that waterfall was named Parsons Falls and it is considered extremely bad luck for a couple to get engaged there especially if one of the people are wearing an orange coat as a safety precaution.

It is blatantly unethical to market credit cards to college students. Credit cards are now considered a serious threat to students, even greater than alcohol or sexually transmitted diseases according to sociologist, Robert Manning (qtd.in Hoover ). Students are easy targets for banks. At eighteen, the average age of a college freshman most of them have no previous banking or credit experience. This puts them in a vulnerable position and they easily give in to the lures and incentives offered by these companies. Credit card companies often distribute free T-shirts, Frisbees and long distance minutes to those who apply for credit cards. Reports suggest that debt related problems such as unpaid balances and late payments are higher among those students who sign up simply to receive these complimentary goodies (Gordon 6). Generally, in the case of college students higher their credit limits higher their debt. "During the past decade, students have generated plenty of business for credit-card companies and plenty of debt for themselves" (Hoover ). Banks now consider students to be their new, best customers. Since students generally make the minimum payments which is two or three percent of the balance, they end up paying a very high interest. According to a survey conducted by Nellie Mae, a student- loan provider "nearly one in three students has at least four credit cards, and that one in 10 will graduate with balances exceeding $7,000" (Hoover ). Such consequences have lead scores of colleges to ban the marketing of credit cards. However many large institutions still permit the marketing of credit cards. These institutions are involved in lucrative business partnerships with major banks. The most popular being monopoly contracts, where, exclusive rights are given to a particular bank to market credit cards to students, alumni and employees as well as to issue affinity cards bearing the university's name (Hoover ). Schools acquire millions of dollars through these contracts and "in many cases, the universities that are supposed to be looking out for their students are instead looking at the bottom line" (Hoover ). Thus the welfare of students, which should be paramount, is ignored.

The lifestyle of college students encourages credit abuse. Many students support themselves; they rely on part-time jobs as well as on student loans and financial aid. With mounting bills and job uncertainty more and more students find it difficult to turn down credit cards. A study conducted by sociologist Robert Manning indicates that nearly seventy percent of undergraduates have at least one credit card with a "revolving debt" averaging more than two thousand dollars (qtd. in Gordon 61). Credit cards provide easy access to otherwise unaffordable expenses. Students tend to misuse this flexibility and find themselves knee deep in debt. Banks and credit card companies take full advantage of their ignorance. As Debbie Alford, a student at University Of Central Oklahoma clearly explains, "It's a dangerous situation when the banks know exactly what they are doing, and the students don't have a clue"(qtd. in Hoover 4). Many a times students are forced to drop out of college and work full time in order to repay the enormous debt they have accumulated. In extreme cases it has resulted in bankruptcy and even suicide (Gordon 61). According to a recent study by Elizabeth Warren, a professor at Harvard Law School "bankruptcy filings by Americans under 5 rose 51 percent between 11 and 1" (qtd. in Hoover ). Paying for college, living alone, money management are some of the pressures of university life. This stressful lifestyle encourages students to extend their credit lines making them more susceptible to debt. The recent suicides committed by college students highlight the urgent need to curb the marketing of credit cards on college campuses.

When analysing the comment "Captain Cook did not discover Australia" the obvious question immediately arises, "Who did discover Australia?" In attempting to answer this question we must first ask other questions; What exactly do we mean by 'discover'? Do we the first set foot upon the territory in question or do we mean those who first 'settled' it or those who first 'civilised' it? Does discovering require a higher level of interaction with the environment? What also do we mean by the concept of Australia, do we refer to the real Terra Nullius that the first aboriginal discoverer would have encounted, do we mean the Terra Australis Incognita of 15th century European Romance, the Dutch's New Holland, Cook and Phillip's settled Australia or perhaps the Australian nation created at Federation.

It will be shown that depending on how one answers the above and other questions will determine whether they consider the above comment valid, partially valid or invalid.

If we consider the discovery of Australia to have occurred the first time a descendent of the Homo Sapien to have set foot on what we know as the Australian continental land mass, the date was around ???????????? and it is generally believied they came form across the sea at PNG. The information is provided by archaeology and anthropology and is beyong the realm of the historian there being no record for historians to interpret. If we consider the aboriginal culture to be a non-civilisation and Australia Terra Nullius we would perhaps see the discovery of Australia as occurring with the first European discovery of Australia, which provides much written record for interpretation.

The romantic notion of Terra Australis Incognita was driving European expeditions for the seach of the great unknown southland and although many sailors glimpsed it and spotted it, it is the Dutch arounf 1606, who can probably claim the first mapping of extensive boundaries of it. Calling the new found land, New Holland, the Dutch mapped much of the coast from the Gulf of Carpentaria West and south along the coast to Broome or so. Documentary evidence includes (KeerWeer).

Australians, having a predominantly Anglo background, may give the disacovery of Australia to the first Englishman to visit the shores. William Dampier may also be given credit by some due to the higher level of interaction he had with the environewment, compared to the Dutch. This is evident in his Diaries.

Even higher levels of interaction by Cook who came with an extensive scientific party, including the reknown Botanist, Joseph Banks. Cook can also be seen as the first person to land on the East coast of Australia, thereby practically settling the question of the physical boundaries of the great south land. Cook's observations can also be seen as some of the grounds for the settling of Australia. Through these arguments, it can be argued that Cook discovered Australia.

As can be seen, it depends on how we interpret the words discover and Australia that will determine the answer we come up with to the question "Who discovered Australia?" A sound argument can be established to support the statement the Captain Cook did not discover Australia'; however, a perhaps equally credible argument could be raised to support that he did indeed discover the Australia as we know it today. Just as an argument could be supported that Australia as we know it today was not 'discovered' until 101 with Federation. Just like the evidence, the question is also up for interpretation.

Pride and Prejudice, which generally deals with the topic of marriage, is

especially written for unmarried women who plan to get married or have

an interest in getting married. People besides unmarried women can of

Buy cheap pride and prejudice term paper

course enjoy this book, but to grasp more of the main characters points of

view, unmarried women may be the best audience of this book. Also,

married women can enjoy this book because they can look back on what it was

like when they were single. Generally, I believe this book is for women.

Though the topic of this book is mainly about marriage, it also includes

other topics such as romance and social status. There are several

characters in the book who get married or fall in love with someone. For

example, when Mr. Bingley moved into Netherfield Park, close to where the

Bennets live, the Bennets had a ball. Jane, the oldest daughter in the

Bennet family, finds Mr. Bingley attractive when she sees him at the ball.

Mrs. Bennet is happy to see her daughter with Mr. Bingley since he is

wealthy.

The story begins with Mr. Bingleys arrival at Netherfield Park. Mrs.

Bennet tells her five unmarried daughters (Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and

Lydia) that a rich and handsome man is moving to their neighborhood from

the north of England. Mr. Bingley comes in a carriage with four horses with

his servants. An Assembley is held in the nearby town, and Mr. Bingley brings

his friend, Mr. Darcy. This is when Jane, Elizabeth, Mr. Bingley, and Mr.

Darcys relationship begins. Gradually, Jane gets attracted to Mr. Bingley

and Mr. Darcy finds Elizabeth charming. However, even though Mr. Darcy liked

Elizabeth, she at first did not have a good impression of him. She thought

Mr. Darcy was too high-handed. As the story goes on, Mr. Darcy confesses his

love to Elizabeth, but she refuses it since she has seen how proud he is and

she has heard bad rumors about him. On the other hand, Jane and Mr. Bingleys

love gradually grows. Eventually, Jane gets married to Mr. Bingley and Elizabeth

accepts Mr. Darcys proposal at the second time. The reason why Elizabeth decided

to accept Mr. Darcys proposal was because she realized, when she read the letter

from Mr. Darcy, that his character was completely different from what she had

thought, and she has learned that he has changed. In fact, Mr. Darcy became the

kind of man who Elizabeth liked.

I believe this books characteristic is Jane Austens writing technique, how

she attracts readers into the story of growing relationships. Once I

went into the story, I had to continue reading because I wanted to know what

was going on between Jane and Mr. Bingley, and the other couples. In addition,

another characteristic is the noble society in England in the early 1th century.

Just by reading the book, we can grasp how peoples custom was like back

then.

This book taught me a little about the English culture, other than the

relationship between men and women. For example, I learned that people

used to name where they lived, such as Netherfield Park and Longbourn. I

found that in rural places in England, people used to travel long distances

to visit their neighbors since they did not live so close to each other than we

do now. Also, the use of language was different compared to American

English. People seemed to speak more indirectly compared to the English

spoken nowadays. This book was exciting for me since I wanted to read

further and further to find out what was happening. I recommend it to

women who are interested in romance. It is a little frustrating in some

parts of the book when things dont go as I wanted it to go, but the story ends

with a happy ending so it satisfied me. I think this book isnt too

challenging since it is an abbreviated version from the original version.

September 11, 001 was a disastrous day for America and the world as we all witnessed the fragile shell of our nations security being shattered. For flight crewmembers, airlines, corporations, and union companies that day immediately focused awareness on the lack of their security, which did not prepare them to deal with this new emergence of a complicated terrorist threat. Trained terrorists remain on to threatening the safety and security of the traveling public, executives and flight crew members worldwide. Unfortunately, crewmember training continues to dangerously wait behind in content and understanding in dealing with these deadly threats worldwide. Arming airline pilots is just not enough in building an effective security program for crewmembers.

History and background the topic of airline safety is a very controversial one with no real safety answer that best suits everybody. The two extreme answer to this problem are either, increase airline safety regulation or don't. Both answers help and hurt a number of people, in the number of ways. More tragedies would be avoided, and more lives will be saved, if the airline regulations are increased. However, if they were increased, than a chain of event will occurs that will cause everything to be more expensive. First of all, in order for the airlines do adequate meet these new regulations, they will have to devote more time and more man-power to the project. This will then increase their input costs. With inputs costs being increased the ticket prices for customer will then go up. Since obviously nobody likes rises in ticket prices consumer consumption will then decrease dramatically. So basically, if the regulations become stricter, prices will go up, but live will be saved. On the other hand if the regulations do not increase, prices will not be as high, yet more lives will be lost. What basically have to put a price on their lives, if they choose to not increase the regulations, then airline disaster will occur frequently.

After a year's effort by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), U.S. airports now use more than 1,000 CAT-scan-like devices which cost more than $1 million each to test the molecular composition of a bag's contents. Other systems check for traces of bomb residue. At approximately two dozen airports, these machines are not yet fully installed; under heavy pressure from the airports. Adding the bomb-sniffing dogs and hand searches must be used to fill the gap until the machines are installed. In addition, remodeling airport terminals to provide accommodation van-sized machines has proved an alarming task, costing some $ billion. Carry-on luggage is restricted to one bag and one personal item per passenger; only ticketed passengers are permitted to pass the security checkpoints; knives, box cutters, and other sharp equipment found in carry-on luggage are confiscated; and more passengers and their carry-on luggage are searched at the gates.

Aviation officials say they've accomplished a computer screening program that's used to identify airline passengers who may pose a security risk. The program, known as the Computer Assisted Passenger Prescreening System, or CAPPS, uses a set of secret criteria to identify passengers who might be dangerous. CAPPS singled out six of the September 11 hijackers but this only resulted in more thorough screening of their checked baggage. Passengers identified by CAPPS are now pulled aside and closely scrutinized, and both their carry-on and checked baggage is thoroughly searched.

After /11, the Aviation Safety and Security (ASSA) instantly acknowledged the consequence of increasing an innovative and improved flight crew security-training program. Horrifying visions of additional planes crashing and crewmembers dying terrible deaths quickly forced them to extend the finest security-training program possible, which they provided to an established airline. Their goal is to authorize flight crews from airlines, corporations and license companies around the world with familiarity and the skills required to defend themselves and their passengers against attacks by terrorists, or to deal with the many other terrorization to safety and secure flight.

Numerous of the advancements throughout the past of aviation have come at a tremendously high price Human Lives. Lets learn from /11 and apply these lessons that realistically point toward involving crewmembers into becoming an essential part of aviation security. Although money and time are important property, they pale in comparison to a human life. Human lives are priceless and the un-necessary loss of just one person is worth the effort at trying to find solutions to preventing a death by using original and creative methods. Along with other safety and security services, ASSA also provides a significant and important audit of flight crew security training and flight line operational security procedures audit that will efficiently help close any gaps that may exist in aviation security.

Saving lives is important; however, there is only so much that can be done. Even if every airplane suites every regulation perfectly, there will still be accident. Human error and nature will still cause its fair share of disaster, and wasting money trying to stop nature is just stupid. For the same money, you could save more lives if you attack the safety regulations on the other things, like cars. No matter what method that the government chooses to use, people will be angry.

Abstract

What a life? The only question that fills my mind with uncertainty is that of who I am. This life leaves no time for family and true romance. It involves all effort and time. If education should get in the way, it too would have to be sacrificed. One thing is for sure though, no matter what it takes, I will achieve my goals with the help of my friends and family.

Everyone has expectations of what their life will consist of in the future. My career is very important to me. I hope to set my occupational and educational goals and not have to ever look back or start over. My job is something that I want to strive for and put all my time and energy into. I would hate to begin an occupation and then five years down the road decide that it's not right for me. I approach life now, after a year has gone by, with a new outlook. There is a time and place in life for everything. As I recollect all

that has occurred this year I think of the many changes that I, as a person have undergone. I realize that I don't have to choose between things in life. If I want something bad enough, I will get it. This year I was able to decide what I want to be and who I am. There are major points that are essential to my career and me.

Custom writing service can write essays on My Educational and Career Goals

Academically, I will continue to strive to put forth all of my effort into my classes. I will challenge myself, and work hard at what does not come easy. My goal is to do the best I can and to have fun as I do it. I will focus more on my career decisions than my instincts and passions. Support from my wonderful family has helped also. Their encouragement has kept me strong through the hard times and good times.

Secondly, I want to be involved in something that I really enjoy doing. Over the years I have learned that any job I have had that consisted of something that I enjoyed doing lasted for a long duration. On the other hand, if I disliked the work, no matter what the other circumstances were, the time that I was there was very short-lived. When I look at something that I am going to be doing for a good part of my life it must be enjoyable to me. I dont want to be one of those people who come home from work everyday unhappy, and dreading the next day. My occupation must be stable, and if I hate what I am doing, it is definitely not going to be stable.

My profession must give me financial security. Money isnt everything, but it is surely important. I feel that making an adequate income is something that can only help matters. However, in todays world people are entirely too wrapped up in their bank accounts. I view money as only one aspect of life while it seems to me that others view it as everything. I think that if I am financially secure, I will be less focused on how I can get more money, and more focused on everything else life has to offer.

My personal life will be the last determining factor as to what I am to be ten years from now. As I look at the year of school ahead of me I know that I want to be able to discover all of myself. I want to be able to develop my weaknesses into strengths. I want to experience freedom and try new things. This year I want to search and discover who I really am and where I fit in the scheme of life. Confusion and too many decisions fill my mind right now. I want to be able to sort them out slowly and make the best decisions.

In conclusion, being a new mom, and a single mom at that, comes with much responsibility at the same time with excitement. I hope to overcome some obstacles that may come my way, while I am trying to achieve my goals. When I receive my diploma from University of Phoenix in Business Management, which I'm sure I will, it will be a great reward and a great asset for me. But it won't stop there, I'm sure the future holds a lot for me.

Krispy Kreme customers consist of people of all ages, races, and gender. The increasing domestic and world population provides significant opportunities for the doughnut industry to increase sales. Increasing work opportunities are resulting in continuous shifts in population to different geographical areas, both locally and globally. As the population is showing a growing trend from traditional ways of eating to more non-traditional ways, this gives rise to the growth in different needs and consumption patterns, especially in the populations approach towards fast foods. This could be an encouraging sign for Krispy Kreme.

In the doughnut industry very few organizations have tried to strengthen their competitive position with vertical integration. Krispy Kreme has established sizable cost savings, as well as alleviated the uncertainty of being dependent on suppliers for the crucial components needed to stay in business through backward integration. Their major competitors are all solely in the production and retail of coffee and baked goods.

Many retailers in the doughnut industry have several distribution channels. The larger establishments, such as Krispy Kreme, Dunkin Donuts, and Tim Hortons have distribution centers that supply the stores with essential supplies in core areas of their business. In addition, some retailers use supermarkets, convenience stores and other retailers as channels for distributing their products.

When looking at the barriers to enter into this industry, I believe that there are moderate barriers that exist. Capital requirements to construct a retail operation or franchise territories can range as high as $5 million. Experience and proven organizational capabilities are necessary to compete in this industry.

The globe is becoming smaller and smaller with every passing day thanks to technology. Technology has given many nations better standards of living, better businesses, and most importantly much healthier lives. New and more innovative equipment is available for producing doughnut products. The implementation of the latest technology in all business aspects, e.g. manufacturing, administration, finance, marketing, gives this industry unlimited opportunities to enter new markets and meet the demand of both existing and new customers.

The product characteristics in the doughnut industry are highly homogeneous. The products of different producers are essentially identical, where many buyers perceive little real difference from seller to seller. However, avid consumers of doughnuts tend to be brand loyalist and aware of product differentiations.

Confucianism

Confucianism is a system of thought based on the teachings of a Chinese man

named Kung Fuzi. Which is latinaized as Confucius, he lived from 551 to 47 b.c.e.

Confucius claimed that he was not original and neither were his teachings, but believed

Order custom research paper on Confucius

himself to be a "creative transmitter of wisdom from the past". He created a moral code

on based on ethics, humanity and love. Confucius philosophies emphasize the ideals of

order and harmony with the idea that people should live in harmony both with each other

and with nature. To achieve this, Confucius created a system of human relationships and

good government. Government to Confucius was the highest profession. He believed that

if one had a good government everyone would be happy. In addition, Confucius esteemed

education in high regards believing that through it, one could reach the high standard of a

gentleman.

For a religion Confucianism is very different from any other due to the fact that

the Chinese see religion as a form of education. The purpose of Confucianism was mainly to instill moral values in a person. There is no organized church or structure, no priests, no sects, and no creed for any follow. There is no worshipping or personal relationship with god but did recognize heaven as a force of human concern. Confucius did believe that men should direct their own destiny. Confucius taught that harmony begins in the family, which was a minuet of society. In which the man of the house was like the emperor or Priest. Confucius believed in a male dominated society were only males could lead the government service. Confucius believed in ancestor devotion. The Ancestor's names are usually kept in shrines. The duty of the father was to make sacrifices and to report any family concerns to these shrines.

Confucius emphasized five virtues, which are the the ideals of Confucianism. The

Confucian virtues are something that should reflect sincerity and inner spirit. The most

important one was ren, which means "humanity", he thought that should be the ideal for

everyone to follow. Then came up with yi, "honesty" zhi, "knowledge" xin faithfulness

and li; correct behavior. Confucianism also refers to basic texts, which are called the five

classics. The book of poetry, which contains the oldest of Chinese poetry, that describes

common experiences such as love, work, and war. The book of rites, consists of three

separate ritual texts. That contains descriptions of how one must behave when attending

events, such as weddings, funerals, banquets and sacrifices. The book of history includes

decrees, speeches, advice from counselors, and reports on similar government affairs. The spring and autumn annals is a brief chronicle of events in Confucius home state. The

book of change is a book that consists of divination, or helps the follower to foretell future events and understand the existence of humans and natural happenings.

The Chinese always believed that the universe has always been influenced by two

opposing forces the Yin and the Yang. The two forces are always changing in power but

each are necessary in order to maintain a balance. Related to this concept also comes the

idea that all things are made up of of five elements. Wood, metal, fire, water and earth,

like the yin and yang this elements are always influencing each other in the balance of

nature. Using this foundation Confucius came to determine how things work together.

Later believing that this was the key for living, and maintaining harmony. This way

anyone would be able to correct imbalances or disharmony. This idea was used in

medicine, nutrition, agriculture, art and literature, becoming part of Confucianism.

Although Confucianism has evolved and changed, most of its social and

governmental ideals have prevailed to remain. They have been useful, and have become

the building blocks that have helped the Chinese civilization be such a stable force.

As a reader, Taylor, the protagonist of The Bean Trees is important in drawing my interest because she narrates much of the story and most of the ideas have been seen through her eyes and point of view. She undergoes major changes in her life and develops herself throughout the story, which enriches the novel. Taylor's loves and cares for people also have a strong impact on other characters, which helps them develop and improve themselves. This affects the readers by drawing their attention into this novel and makes this remarkable book even more interesting.

Taylor born and raised in rural Kentucky. She left to escape a small life in her hometown and to avoid pregnancy. "Mama always said barefoot and pregnant was not my style." Therefore she sets her goal to get away and to avoid pregnancy. In the first chapter, Taylor allows us to understand women's lives in her hometown, Pittman, Kentucky. "Believe me in those days the girls were dropping by the wayside like seeds off a poppy seed bun, and you learned to look at everyday as a prize." This gives readers a great insight and quickly draws their attention into this novel.

Taylor begins the novel as Marietta or 'Missy' Greer and changes her name as she travels west. "The fist was I would get myself a new name. I wasn't crazy about anything I have been called up to that point in life and this seemed like the time to make a clean break." Taylor decides that she will drive until her car runs out of petrol, and take a new based on wherever her car stops. She ends up on Taylorville and changes her name from Marietta to Taylor. The change of her name gives her an encouragement to find herself and allows the readers to indicate her personality, which shapes the novel, at the same time. This immediately draws reader's interest into the novel.

Taylor faces the biggest change in her life when an abandoned child, Turtle, is placed in her car as she stops in the old bars for a cup of coffee and a hamburger in the middle of Cherokee Nation in oklahoma. Although Taylor spent all her life avoiding pregnancy, she keeps Turtle with her. "If I wanted a baby I would have stayed in Kentucky. I could have had babies coming out of my ears by now." Turtle eventually becomes Taylor's new goal. She changes the way Taylor felt and thought towards motherhood. "I found my head rights, Mama. They're coming with me." Turtle gradually develops herself through Taylor's influences and reveals her pasts continuously through Taylor's love, care, and protection. This provides the interest to the readers and touches their hearts deeply.

As well as playing a huge role in Turtle's life, Taylor's relationship with Lou Ann Ruiz also affects Lou Ann life. Lou Ann's husband, Angle, left her, leaving her with no confidence or self-esteem. Before she meets Taylor, Lou Ann has a negative self-image and always puts herself down. " She despised her looks and had more ways of saying so than anyone I'd ever known." Taylor's helped changes her to someone with more confidence and esteem. Thereby, Lou Ann learns to support herself and her motherhood life in the absence of her husband. Taylor, on the other hand, also learns the fact that raising a baby is part of life. She learns this from Lou Ann, who always looks her beloved son with all her love. This makes Taylor to become more worldly and grown-up, which sparks the interest in the novel.

In The Bean Trees, Taylor being the narrator and speaking in first person reveals herself, which drawing the interest into this novel. Taylor also has a strong impact on Turtle and Lou Ann's personalities as she touches their lives in her kind, loving ways. Even though she doesn't physically pregnant, but becomes a child's mother and puts all her effort to raise turtle with all her heart. She finally becomes Turtle's legal mother. She is an admirable character who captures my interest as a reader and lights up the novel as the story moves on.

Analysis of Pearl

One of the most significant writers of the romantic period in American literature was Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hawthorne wrote stories that opposed the ideas of Transcendentalism. Since he had ancestors of Puritan belief, Hawthorne wrote many stories about Puritan New England. His most famous story is the Scarlet Letter. This novel tells of the punishment of a woman, Hester Prynne,

who committed adultery and gave birth to Pearl. A minister of Boston, Arthur Dimmesdale, had an affair with Hester while believing that her husband, Roger Chillingworth, had died. However, Chillingworth did not die and appears during

the early stages of Hesters punishment. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the character of Pearl in the Scarlet Letter. Her whole life had many difficulties while living in Puritan New England. Furthermore, Pearl displays much parallelism to the scarlet letter that Hester must wear. Finally, Pearls birth intensified the conflicts in the novel. Clearly, Pearl becomes the symbol of all the other major characters tragedies.

The character of Pearl in the Scarlet Letter lived a very difficult life. Before the novel begins, Hester Prynne gives birth to Pearl after having an affair with Arthur Dimmesdale, a Puritan minister. Pearls birth proves that Hester cheated on her husband Roger Chillingworth provoking the stories action. The novel opens with the people of Boston staring and laughing at Hester holding

Pearl while standing on the towns scaffold. At this time, Pearl is three months old. Years later Hester gets released from jail and lives with Pearl in the outskirts of town. Since Hester becomes alienated from Boston, Pearl turns

into her mothers only treasure!. Hester makes bright red

clothes for Pearl that parallel the scarlet A. At age three, Pearl endures many laughs and jokes from other Puritan children but chases them away with

stones. Since Pearls birth resulted from broken rules, she does not feel the obligation to follow rules. Although her life is an outcast of Puritan society, Pearls language shows a high level of intelligence. Later, Hester receives

word that the magistrates want to take Pearl away from her. Hester takes Pearl to the governors house where the child meets her father, Arthur Dimmesdale. After Dimmesdale persuades the governors to allow Hester to keep Pearl, he gives the child a kiss on the forehead. This kiss hints that Dimmesdale is Pearls

father. When Hester and Pearl return from Governor Winthrops death bed, they join Dimmesdale standing on the towns scaffold. Pearl asks Dimmesdale Wilt thou

stand here with mother and me, to-morrow noontide? twice. Realizing that Arthur is her father, Pearl wants him to confess his sin so that the three of them can live peacefully. Next, Hester takes Pearl for a walk in the woods to meet Dimmesdale. While the two lovers talk and come up with plans to leave for England, Pearl goes off and plays in the woods. After Hester and Dimmesdale finish talking, Pearl returns and finds that her mother has removed the scarlet letter. Pearl, who has grown attached to the A, throws a temper tantrum until Hester puts the letter back on her dress. Later, Dimmesdale kisses Pearl, who then runs to a brook and washes off the kiss. Pearl does not accept Dimmesdale as her father. At the end of the novel, Hester and Pearl go to England, but Hester returns and dies in Boston. Hawthorne never tells exactly what happened to Pearl. The people of Boston have many different ideas

about Pearls fate. For example, some believe that she died or that she married and received money from Chillingworths will.
