Response to the statement "Love can't conquer all".

I have always lived after the idea, that love does conquer all and if one has love,

that person can do and get through everything. I don't know if this statement is true anymore, in our materialistic and complicated society. In the beginning of a relationship it is always exiting and all problems one might have had are just flown away. Everything seems so easy. When couples move in together -wheater they are married or not-, they are usually at the point of their relationship where they feel very secure and safe with each other. It can become a shock for couples when they discover sides about each other they wouldn't have discovered if not living together. It can be good sides, but also sides such as laziness and messiness. Having a shared economy isn't always as easy as it sounds, and it is often a reason why couples fight. The problems can become so big that these two people who love each other have to go separate ways because of differences in opinions that love couldn't conquer.

But, these are small details that point toward the general issue of why love sometimes is not enough. Perhaps the statement is incorrect, maybe love does conquer all but we do everything to make sure that it does not. We allow religion, race, politics and morals to dictate how we should feel about the world and others that live on it. These issues are far removed from our first days of life. It was then that we learned about love. A love that ties the mother and child with eternal resolve only to be severed, like the umbilical cord at birth, by the practical and "rational" ideals of our society.

Order College Papers on Love can't conquer all

I remember at some point it was easier to love because I did not require anything else but love in return. Today I have certain requirements for love. You have to look a

certain way, know certain things and be a certain way. I am almost sure that I did not create these criteria. At some point of my life, I believe someone or something convinced me that love looks, tastes, and smells a certain way, and as I examine my life, I am more convinced of the shallowness of my heart and the emptiness of my soul. Love is my birthright, but love requires courage.

The real question is not whether love conquers all (for certain it does) but whether we have the courage to challenge the ideals of our society which speaks volumes about everything but what love is. It has no color, it is not a religion, and it is not a matter of opinion or a word. Without love we cease to be anything else but dead.

Baldwin bases his arguments on Black English on being valid and legitimate but not seen as a justifiable language because to political superiorities it its not correct. He argues of how language is political, because depending on what society speaks or who is in power, that is what the rest of the community will have to speak. It is basically which dominant group has the power of authority. He argues that language reveals the speaker, meaning that language makes you a part of who you are, your identity. As like Baldwin, Rodriguez has certain aspects of his essay that agree and compare with each other. Baldwin for the most part agrees and extends Rodriguez notion that their private language is something that separates them from other people and unifies them with their own kind. Their language gives them an identity, but an identity that is controlled by a hierarchy that puts them in a minority group and not in a dominant group, all because of a political power.

Baldwin says that language is a political instrument that is used to give someone a private identity that connects to your self, but as well can makes you separate from who you are or from the larger dominant group that's in superiority to minorities. He says language develops from history and from whom the history is about or it has effected. Language is developed by the speaker to recognize where they come from. The language tells people where the person comes from, their culture and their originality. A language that someone develops gives them a sense of pride and an identity. A quote in Baldwin says, "The price for this is the acceptance, and achievement, of one's temporal identity." (Pg. 1) What he means is that the price for having an identity, is to learn and build up your language skills.

Rodriguez's essay is very similar to Baldwin's essay when it comes to the notion that using your private language is not allowed in the school system and in public, but that the public language is to be learned because the political society that is in control says that is mandatory. Like in Rodriguez's essay he says, "It is not possible for a child-any childever to use his family's language in school. Not to understand this is to misunderstand the public uses of schooling and to trivialize the nature of intimate lifea family's language." This is one of the quotes that Rodriguez uses that compares to Baldwin's argument about children being required to learn proper English and not use the English or other languages that they know. Baldwin says, "A child cannot be taught by anyone whose, demands essentially, is that the child repudiate his experience, and all that gives him sustenance…" (Pg.15). Children's language cannot be taken away, according to Baldwin, but can be forgotten. That is what both authors say, although later on Rodriguez later says to be in this country you have to learn in school is English. Rodriguez argues the same thing that Baldwin says on people and children being forced to learn English. Baldwin says, " What I needed to learn in school was that I had the rightand the obligationto speak the language of lose gringos." These two quotes form a comparison that illustrates learning English is a must and something you need in order to communicate.

yeast--hybrid interactions

All two-hybrid screening systems rely on the fact that transcriptional activation and DNA-binding domains of transcription factors are modular in nature6, 7. In these systems, the coding sequence for the DNA-binding domain of a transcription factor such as Gal4 or LexA is fused to the cDNA of a protein of interest, termed the bait. The fusion protein thus encoded tethers the bait to the promoter region of a reporter gene. A second fusion of a cDNA library with the coding sequence of a transcriptional activation domain is termed the prey. Functional reconstitution of transcription factor activity occurs upon association of the bait and prey protein domains. This interaction is then detected by expression of reporter genes that are dependent upon the baits DNA-binding domain.

Thus, the two-hybrid system is ideal for screening libraries for novel proteinprotein interactions, and is also a powerful tool to isolate factors that disrupt or promote protein interactions. Its advantage is that an interaction of the bait with an unknown prey leads to direct identification of the cDNA that encodes the interacting protein, and its use in high-throughput screening applications allows the rapid and efficient screening of large numbers of potential interacting cDNAs or peptides .

We have generated a novel genetic system to study these interactions by taking advantage of the properties of the GAL4 protein of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This protein is a transcriptional activator required for the expression of genes encoding enzymes of galactose utilization1. It consists of two separable and functionally essential domains an N-terminal domain which binds to specific DNA sequences (UASG); and a C-terminal domain containing acidic regions, which is necessary to activate transcription,. We have generated a system of two hybrid proteins containing parts of GAL4 the GAL4 DNA-binding domain fused to a protein X and a GAL4 activating region fused to a protein Y. If X and Y can form a protein-protein complex and reconstitute proximity of the GAL4 domains, tran-scription of a gene regulated by UASG occurs. We have tested this system using two yeast proteins that are known to interactSNF1 and SNF4. High transcriptional activity is obtained only when both hybrids are present in a cell. This system may be applicable as a general method to identify proteins that interact with a known protein by the use of a simple galactose selection.

Since the first murmurings of war, journalists from across the nation evaluated and implemented various coverage methods. Some were live news feeds from Iraq, some largely editorial, some sensational and some ran alongside articles about high school graduation and senioritis.

In the seemingly endless stream of war coverage in mass media, high school publications have not been left behind. Rather, the scholastic press has embraced the opportunity to inform students of international matters, attempting to make the news interesting and understandable to high school students.

I know there are students on campus who couldnt care less about the war. But if theres one kid who wants to know more or has an interest, theres a reason to write the story, Jeff Katz, 17, co-editor in chief of the Granite Bay High School Gazette, said.

Although the topic is covered in all media, high school journalists are forced to deal with war coverage in unique ways due to their main audience, print schedules and resources.

Write my Essay on hey thanks for the help for me

Since information provided in the professional media can often be in-depth and elaborate, comprehension of international issues can be dauntingly complex for some students.

I tell my students your goal is not to inflate diction or create complex, lengthy paragraphs; your objective is to clearly communicate, Gazette adviser Karl Grubaugh said. Thats what good newspapers do - take significant stories and make sense of them for their community and readership.

In Puyallup, Wash., the staff of the Emerald Ridge High School Jagwire used various techniques to clarify topics for a teenage audience, including infographics, maps and timelines to explain the precedence of political turmoil in Iraq to students who perhaps know little about the background of the conflict.

A lot of the problem with the war is that until you turn on the TV and see missiles exploding, it doesnt seem real. And still, this stuff is going on half a world away, Jagwire Editor in Chief James Eberlein, 18, said.

Most high school newspapers are published monthly or bi-monthly, making up-to-date war stories difficult, if not impossible, to report.

Its hard because we have to be relying on others stories for our stories, so we tend to focus on how its affecting us and our community, Katz said. For example, its a lot easier to cover our own football game than, say, a 4ers game, and students are more interested.

Avoiding timeliness problems is one of the reasons scholastic publications tend to write more focused feature articles. Common topics like war protests, students or alumni in the military or how the conflict affects gas prices serve as an alternative to straight news coverage, which can easily be found elsewhere.

Students generally choose to allow the professional media to inform the public of major events, while their more personal coverage interests high schoolers because it involves people they know and see on a daily basis.

We use as many school resources as possible talking to teachers who are Vietnam veterans, interviewing students in the military and writing opinion pieces reflecting the views of students here. Thats the stuff you cant see on CNN, said Eberlein.

"Crazy, how it feels tonight. Crazy, how you make it all alright, love. Crush me, with the things you do. I'll do for you, anything, too." "Crush" by Dave Matthews. The opening lyrics to Crush describe the good parts of love and relationships. Love is obviously one of the best parts of life. In "Sonnet XXX", written by Edna St. Vincent Millay, she speaks of love in comparison to other things we need in life, like food or shelter. She holds love at the same level as these, if not above. The short story, "A Rose for Emily", written by William Faulkner, tells of a woman, Emily, who is in search of that same requisite of life love. To compare a detailed short story to a right to the point sonnet may seem difficult. The two pieces of literary work are very similar because they both contain examples of what a person would do for love and they also share the element of death from lack of love.

According to the sonnet, love may be more important than food, water, or even life itself. The speaker contemplates whether or not she would trade love to get out of a sticky situation. She may have been hungry or physically hurt. She decided that she would make sacrifices to keep her love. Emily, from the short story, has many suitors as a young woman. Her protective father sends them all away, and consequently, her father becomes her lone source of affection. When her father dies, she refuses to believe her only love has passed. In search of some human attention, she befriends a young construction worker named Homer. Unfortunately, Homer enjoys the company of young men more than that of hers. When Emily realizes that Homer will never look at her the way she looks at him, she sacrifices her innocence and her sanity. She kills her only love in this world. She wanted to keep him around. She confides herself to her home and ceases to interact with the "living" world. She gave up on life because she had no love. In the sonnet, the speaker admits that the last thing she would do, would be to give up her love. Just as Emily refused to give up hers.

Because love is a necessity to life, without it, you'd die. "Yet many a man is making friends with death even as I speak, for lack of love alone." Sonnet XXX. The speaker basically says that without love, people give up, and soon die. For instance, if a couple has been married for a long time, and one spouse dies, the other soon follows. They feel they have little to live for, because half their life had been spent with that person. Emily does not die a bodily death soon after she lost all the loves in her life. Instead she dies emotionally, and spiritually. She sits in her house, probably lies in her bed, all day. She doesn't try to improve her situation because she doesn't care anymore. So when the town gathered at Emily's funeral, they were many years late. Miss Emily Gierson had died years ago.

In conclusion, the sonnet and the short story are the same in that they both tell a tale of life without love and the death that inevitably follows. The speaker in the sonnet would die before giving up on love, and Emily did just that, in a way. Love is a key part of living a full and meaningful life. Emily showed that life without it is empty, not worth living at all.

Choice of Application

For my assignment I used Microsoft Excel. I thought that this would be a good package to use because of its many different features. I felt that it had the best features available that were suitable for my task.

There were many advantages to Excel.

Using Excel, I was able to enter text, charts, graphs and also formulas. I found that I could input data very easily and the package helped me present my data in a very clear and organised way, more so than if I had used a different application such as Word. If I had used word, I would have had to calculate and enter in the information I needed every time.

Order Custom Essay on ICT MOBILE PHONES

However, by using Excel I could enter formulas and therefore I did not have to change everything myself when I entered in a new piece of information, but rather they changed automatically. By adding these formulas all my calculations were worked out for me. I could also see what would happen if I added different values to my spreadsheet without having to change everything else i.e. a computer model. If I had have used Word then I would have had to do all calculations by myself.

Using Excel I was able to add charts to my work which helped me to present my information even more clearly and also more attractively.

Collecting Information

I got the information which I required to do my assignment from 'The Link' catalogue. I obtained this from The Link mobile phone store in Newry. I also did some ringing around to other mobile phone stores to inquire to see if their prices were the same or cheaper.

Evaluation

After finishing my assignment and using Microsoft Excel to complete it, I can now come to a conclusion on what tariff would be best for the student and the sales representative.

From doing my calculations in Excel I found that the best option for the student would be 'Orange, peak user £5 and under'. For one week the overall cost of making his or her calls including the line rental worked out to be £1.50. This was much better than other tariffs which I had researched like 'O weekly peak user £5 and under' which worked out to be £5.

For the sales representative I worked out that the cheapest and best option for her would be 'Vodafone weekly Peak user £5 and over'. The overall cost per week for this tariff came to £1.00 including line rental.

This is how I worked it out

I worked out the total cost for each the daytime calls, the evening calls, the weekend calls the international calls and the text messages by using the following formula

Duration of calls (or texts) Cost per minute (or text)

I then added the costs for the daytime, evening, weekend, international calls and text messages to find the total costs of all calls and text messages. This gave me £84.00.

To get the overall cost for the sales representative I then added the cost of the line rental, which was £7.00 per week to the total cost of all the calls, which was £84.

Therefore I found that the overcall cost of using 'Vodafone weekly Peak user £5 and over' for the sales representative was £1.00.

I then compared this with 'O weekly, Peak User £5 and over', using the same method, which worked out to be £106.50 per week.

Therefore I found that the best option for the sales representative was 'Vodafone Weekly Peak User £5 and over' as it was cheapest.

INTRODUCTION

Quality service is one of the critical factors for any company to survive in this ever challenging world of customer service. For ABSA to increase their share of the customers' wallet we will have to continuously improve on the quality of our service delivered.

STAYING ALIVE WILL MEAN TO DELIVER SUPER SERVICE!!!

The department which I have interviewed for my assignment was Retail banking service.

Their function in the ABSA group is to deliver a quality service to our customer which is in agreement to set service level agreements between strategic business units. In being able to deliver a quality service to our customers the RBS staff must be properly trained in all products, as well as be friendly, helpful, quick, accurate, honest and reliable.

This department must also provide tailored financial solutions to all customers (right product to the right client), as well as educate customers about the features and benefits of the product offered.

Another function of this department is to provide leads to other strategic business units within ABSA who specialize in other financial solutions.

The department must also comply with the banking principles (code of banking practice) as well as the FIC act.

The main objectives of the RBS business units in ABSA is to build alliances within ABSA as well as external and to increase ABSA's profit model through customer centricity as well as targeting the black personal market.

THE MISSION STATEMENT OF THE RBS BUSINESS UNIT IS

"MUTUAL RESPECT"

QUALITY MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS

The quality measurement systems in place company wide are

· CDI (ANEXURE 1)

- The cdi (customer delight index) is a system used to measure the tracking and management of the level of customer satisfaction over time through quantitative and and quantitative assessment processes

- The objective of this system is to identify the gaps in line with the required department or segment and introduce interventions to close the gaps

· SMILY FACES (ANEXURE )

- The smiley faces measuring system is used to measure not only the neatness and safety of a branch, but also the quality of the service experienced by the client with regards to friendly, helpful, quick, accurate, honest and reliable.

· SLA (ANEXURE )

- The SLA (service level agreement) is a measuring system used between different strategic business units to measure the quality and time to finalize certain application. (E.g. time and quality of home loan application, start to end of process.)

· CEASARS (ANEXURE 4)

- Ceasars (customer experience assessment rating) quality measurements system. Customer centricity demads of us to put a measurement instrument in place that will provide a fair and consistant view of the service offered by RBS consultants to our customers. This is not only done by the RBS manager but also by the DSC (delivery channel services) area manager.

· CA (ANEXURE 5)

- The CA (customer assessment) quality measurement system is not yet in operation, but will be replacing the ceasars measurement system. This measurement system focuses on RBS department specifically, but also role over to other departments. This will enable us to determine whether quality service was experienced at the other departments. Quality service is intangible, and this measurement system focuses on critical questions to improve our service as well as the customers experience with an RBS consultant.

- The above quality measurement systems are peculiar to the ABSA RBS department.

USABLE INFORMATION

The measurement system used company wide as well as those which are peculiar to the RBS business unit provide us with sufficient information and feedback, which can enable us to definitely improve on the quality of our service delivered.

Today's excellence service is tomorrow's average and days later poor service.

QUALITY PROBLEMS

Quality problems during the last 1 months, was uncovered internal as well as from customer complaints.

· INTERNAL (EXAMPLES)

1. The quality of service delivered is compromised by management, in order for them to reach targets and feedback received from smiley faces measurement system, is not consistently followed through, or is unfortunately lost.

. The SLA's contracted between departments are majority of the time not met, because departments are working in silos and with temporary staff who are not familiar or informed about current SLA's. clients are also not allowed to contact the administrative departments, thus these departments does not take responsibility to deliver service within agreed SLA, resulting in quality service becoming poor service. Once again, management is not taking responsibility to comply with SLA.

· CUSTOMER COMPLAINTS (EXAMPLES)

1. Action line complaints received from customers are mostly due to clients waiting too long to get feedback on applications submitted. This result from applications which are sent to other departments to be processed or finalized which is not done timorously or is incomplete. Another example is customers' complaining that correspondence from ABSA is not received regularly. (Clients overdraft facility which expired, but the client did not receive any correspondce, or was not contacted.

. Complaints received from clients are also due to lack of knowledge, as well as having the wrong person in the wrong position. (Staff not able to communicate in customers preferred language. Consultant not fully customer driven.)

"IF OUR PEOPLE ARE NOT CUSTOMER DRIVEN, OUR CARS WON'T BE EITHER." (FORD EXECUTIVE)

OVERALL ASSESMENT

Evaluating the quality problems which I have identified in the RBS business unit, my honest opinion in that the quality service which RBS deliver to our customers in terms of turn around times is not what it should be and can definitely be improved on. Administrative staff is not customer centric, because they do not face the customer or speak to them telephonically and thus sometimes compromise the quality of service delivered. People are placed wrongly thus having a major impact on the quality of service we deliver. "For us to improve on our service delivered and for ABSA to remain bank of the year, we need to listen to what the customer perceive quality to be. The measurement system currently used is not a true reflection of the quality of our service, as certain measurement systems can be manipulated and all role players did not buy into the measurement system."

IMPROVEMENTS

In order for us to improve on our service, SLA's must be constantly reviewed to increase the turn around time of applications and these SLA's must be strictly adhered to by all management and staff. We can also improve on our service by keeping customers informed at all times and showing care and respect towards them. Friendly and knowledgeable staff who are service orientated and deliver on their promises will also improve on quality service. Customers expect personal service and relationships must be built on trust. For RBS to be a leader in financial services we must have staff which are innovative, flexible, and helpful and who areable to educate our customers about banking. Knowing and understanding our customers will also improve on our service delivered.

DEFENITION EXCELLENT SERVICE RECOVERY

"The specific actions taken to ensure customer receives a reasonable level of service after problems have occurred to disrupt normal service." (Andreessen 1 tax ETAL 18)

IMPLEMENTATION OBSTICALES

Looking at the size of the RBS business unit and the number of staff employed, it will be costly and time consuming to implement the necessary changes and to align all the different business units in ABSA to the new measurement system. Communicating the urgency of customer centricity and the new measurement system through out ABSA will also be an obstacle we need to overcome. As an employee of ABSA, I do believe that we are on the right track of becoming a world class organization.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The RBS business unit provide quality services to our customer as well as generate leads to other strategic business units within ABSA. Measurement systems currently in use to measure and improve quality service are

· CDI

· Smiley faces

· SLA's

· CEASARS

· CA

Information gathered from these systems can be used to improve on our service. Problems identified in our current measurement systems that prohibit us to deliver service give us an opportunity to implement changes to satisfy our customer needs. Improvements and obstacles with regards to our current measurements system have also been suggested in this document.

"The Drover's Wife" a short story by Henry Lawson shows you the life conditions and the struggle of a housewife whose husband is a drover. Being left on her own the drovers wife develops resilience` as a result of the hardships she has faced over the years in her lonely surroundings.

The description of the land surrounding the family's house paints it as harsh, isolating, flat, "bush all-round", and no horizons. No ranges, stunted, rotten native apple trees, no undergrowth, and no civilization for nineteen miles and secluded by loneliness. It isn't a very flattering description of somewhere to live but she is used to this life and its loneliness and would now feel strange if she was to move away from it. She has her Sundays when she gets all the children dressed up and they go for a long walk along the bush track, this gives her something to do because all of the other days seem the same. An overwhelming boredom such as this would make peoples lives feel useless and pointless but the drover's wife has grown such a resilience to this that she overlooks the boredom and focuses on things that only a person of this lifestyle could focus on.

The house, the main area in which the drover's wife has encountered most of her hardships is not one that you would like to spend your life in. Made of timber and stringy bark, floored with spilt slabs, wind rushing through the gaps in the slab wall at night, bark kitchen with earth floor. Although this house is a mere shelter and offers little protection from anything that threatens to take it over or take it away e.g. snake, fire. The drover's wife admires her house and has accepted what she has been given and doesn't dwell on what she hasn't got.

The main reason that drover's wife has developed such resilience is because of the events that she has faced and been through. For example the drought had force her husband to go droving again and therefore she suffered long periods of alone from six to eighteen months. She had some of her children born alone in the bush with Black Mary the only one there to help. One child died and she had to ride nineteen miles to get assistance carrying her dead child. Raging bush fires have threatened to burn her out but she vigorously fought them and succeeded. Floods washed away the dam that nearly broke her heart because years of her husbands labor had now been destroyed. Fought a mad bullock from attacking her family and she is constantly fighting off crows and eagles from getting her chickens. But most of all the main confrontation that is mentioned in the story is that of the snake going under the house. After killing the snake it shows you how such a small thing if given the opportunity can drastically change the way you live for a short period of time.

Write my Essay on The Odyssey chapters 1-5 for me

Thought

Telemachus shows strong generosity and courage in The Odyssey (Books 1-5).

His attitude towards Athena when she visits him is so calm and nice it gives me the felling that he is a very good guy. Telemachus shows this when he comes out and says to Athena, " Greetings stranger. You are welcome here. After you've had dinner, you can tell us what you need." (Book 1, lines 1-1).

When Telemachus finally realizes that he needs if father very much, he develops a strong emotion for his father to come home. However, I feel that he is upset because he does not know why his father still is not home yet. Telemachus shows me that he is a real man because he is not scared to cry. " He was sitting with the suitors, nursing his sorrow, picturing his noble father, imagining he had returned."(Book 1, Lines 1-14) support the theory of mine.

Penelope and Telemachus have a great connection. Since Odysseus was not there for Telemachus when he was growing up, Penelope probably almost seems like the father to Telemachus. The reason I think this way is because Odysseus was not there throughout his childhood, this would mean that Penelope was not only a mother to his she was also a father to Telemachus. This may be the reason that they have such a close connection with each other. Telemachus going to look for his father also shows me that his love for his mother is conditional because he is willing to go look for his father because his mother is distraught.

The suitors in Books 1-5 are all after Penelope. Of course, this is going to make Telemachus mad and it's also going to make Penelope mad. The suitors are all after the marriage of Penelope. This stirs up a lot of trouble in books 1-5 because Penelope and Telemachus both want Odysseus back home. The suitors want to kill Telemachus so that they have all try to get Penelope. However, Telemachus is not going to let that happen. He is going to do anything that he can I feel to keep them away from his mother until his father gets back.

my sister rachel, four years my senior, moved out for the first time three monthes ago. im not going to say that we always got along or acted loving and caring twenty four seven, because thats not true. we fought all the time, and more than just little squabbles. im talkin horrible name calling, hair pulling, bruise leaving fights. and im not proud to say that before she left i was excited to see her go. i wanted to be oldest, and have reign over my younger brother and sister, to have control over the phone, to get all moms attention on shopping trips. i was actually waiting for her to go. but the week she was scheduled to leave i couldnt get all our memories out of my head.

from day one its always been me and her. we took over the very back seat in the van every road trip, we pumped up the music as loud as possible and honked at people we didnt know in her red firebird, we stole each others magazines and put them in the mail stack the next day as if theyd just arrived. Images of us at the beach burying our feet in the sand and saying we were stuck so maybe we wouldnt be forced to go home, of us lip syncing and making up dances to old janet jackson songs, us watching our new kids on the block videos, us walking to get donuts the day my grandpa died, us pissing our parents off. and i couldnt forget how shed been there for me. she was the only one that understood when i got kicked out of theater. shes the one who convinced my mom that it was ok for me to go to many a party. and when i didnt have a ride, or had no where to go, or no one to hang out with, she was always there.

the night before she was going to leave she asked if i wanted to go to the park with her. i didnt really, but knowing this would be the last chance for us to hang out for quite a while, i went. we went to the park at about ten oclock, just me, her dog and rach. we swang, made the dog go down the slide a couple times, and then just layed down in the grass and looked at the stars. and thats when i felt it, that horrible feeling. the feeling of when you know deep down, down in the farthest part of your heart, that everything as you know it is changing, that nothing will ever be the same from here on. and as we walked home i tried to savor our moments.

the next day the whole family drove down to her college. rachel and i went in the firebird, just me and her. i brought all my cds and we sang the whole way there. by the time we made it to her dorms our voices were raw. we set her dorm up for the most part. and then it was time to say goodbye. as we hugged, i knew that this was the end of the beggining, the beggining of everything else. i knew that she wouldnt be there to help me fight off the parentals any more, to laugh at tom green with me, to secretly be obbsessed with dawsons creek, to talk about hot guys with. it would just be me. so i went to her dorms laundry room. and i sat on the dryer, and i cried. i cried because we were growing up, because she wouldnt be here with me anymore to lecture me on sex or drugs or drinking or older guys. i cried because i knew a part of me would be missing. and thats how it is. i still talk to her about once a week. we email each other, and she tells me about how much fun it is to be free, and how crazy the frat parties are, and that she misses me. and i tell her i miss her too and everythings fine. and everything is fine. but as i pass by her room i cant help but look past the emptiness and see two little girls jumping on their bed as high as possible.

What is it to be black and American? For years this conundrum has plagued the minds of so many Americans, more specifically of African descent. Complicated is the process of analysis in this matter, and detrimental is its conclusion to the vitality of this culture's social strength. Is it possible to be optimistic regarding the position and placement of the black group in America today without being naïve? Or should the more cynical, pessimistic view of the black American be gleamed upon and toiled over? Determining whether hope or despair is the appropriate response is the key.

In Toni Morrison's essay titled "A Slow Walk of Trees," the issue is presented the interpretation of the black man, his role and position as of now. For many persons it is terribly tiring to consider what it means to be black and American today. The culmination of media portrayal, the bemusement by white America of blacks, the exploitation internally and externally of the community to which they belong to a boiling point do they reach, yet staying from complete incorporation and cooperation in this conglomeration so ill-represented by the misnomer of "melting pot." While it is true that a vast selection of characteristics and traits have been readily inculcated into popular culture, the soul of the black culture, the life force has been shunned in the same manner. How can one find himself satiated by this? Complete acceptance and inclusion a complete fallacy some would say. "I am black and I'm proud … forgetting the rest!"

The other side of the same coin displays an immediate contradiction, yet somehow constructed with the same base, a multi-faceted foundation. Is the optimistic Negro simply naïve? This is not so. Morrison aptly consolidates this other social consciousness in her essay, while leaving room to ponder "Some [black people] I know are clearer in their positions, have not sullied their anger with optimism or dirtied their hope with despair" (Morrison, 48). This person, the hopeful kind, can see a glimmer of light at what appears to be a never-ending tunnel of complication, distraction, and problematic epithets and confrontations. Though this theology, this conception should be honored and applauded, lurking in the far regions of the mind lie apprehension, anxiety, and reservations about the outcome, the superficial "conclusions," the planting of feet on the proverbial shaky ground. Nevertheless, no matter the uncertainty one cannot deny the lessening and loosening affect of such thought processes.

Whether good or bad, optimistic or pessimistic, uplifting or degrading, one must consider all factions of the whole being black and American. Throughout history there have been speakers, leaders, and promoters for both sides, they themselves having to consider their choices in the matter, their reasoning, and the affect their words could and did have upon their people. For one to make a sound choice and personally satisfactory decision, not just paroxysms of voice should be made, but careful, detailed, structured rhetoric. It is up to each person to decide if history has made the black man what he is and placed him accordingly, or should that be taken into consideration and utilized in the future for a better place, a better society, a better man, a better black man?

Boy at the Window

The theme in Boy At The Window, by Richard Wilbur, is about having the will power to overcome the desires that we sympathize due to the limited boundaries that exist. The main parts of speech that are used to carry out the theme, as well as the subject matter are irony, personification, simile, alliteration and imagery.

Irony is the use of words to convey a meaning that is opposite of its literal meaning or idea (RHWCD 61). This figure of speech is used in the whole story line of the poem. I say this because in the poem that boy was at his window looking at a snowman. That boy was crying because in his child mind he thought and was concerned of the snowman being cold. As this boy cried with grief and sadness, the snowman concerned about the boy, deep inside felt that he should go inside with that boy; however the solution was ironic. He physically had boundaries that absolutely made him unable to do this. I find this ironic because he wanted to but on the other hand he didnt.

The second figure of speech is personification. Personification is the attribution of a human nature or character to inanimate objects or abstract notions (RHWCD 7). The definition fits exactly to the way this poet uses it. Seeing this snowman stand alone in dusk and cold is more than he can bear, the word he, this stanza gives me the evidence that this snowman is portrayed with human attributes. The second indication that personification is used is Still, he is moved to see the youngster cry, he is moved is that indication of this usage.

Write your "Boy at the Window" research paper

The third part of speech used is simile. Simile is when two distinct things are compared by using like or as, (RDWCD 104). The following line uses simile, Returns him such a god-forsaken stare as outcast Adam gave to Paradise. The word as in this stanza makes it a hint to us that he is comparing that situation with that of Adam.

The fourth figure of speech used is alliteration. Alliteration is the repetition of the same sound, as a consonant or cluster, at the beginning of two or more stressed syllables (RHWCD 5). In the poem the line that contains this is the pale faced figure with…him in such a god-forsaken stare. The letter f is stressed times. This causes that alliteration effect.

The fifth and final figure of speech is imagery. Imagery is mental images collectively esp. writing (RHWCD 651). This part of speech is used several times throughout the poem. That first indication of this usage is seeing the snowman standing…; this is imagery because this stanza gives you a visual image of what is occurring. The second stanza is a gnashing and enormous moan this is imagery because it also gives you a visual image and that it appeals to the sense of sound.

This poem is a narrative poem. I classify this poem as narrative because it tells a story of a particular event. Its rhyme scheme is, a, b, b, a, b, c, b, c, d, e, e, d, e, f, e, f. This means that the words at the end of each stanza rhyme with the corresponding letter.

In conclusion, the theme of Boy at the Window by Richard Wilbur is about having the will power to overcome the desires that we sympathize due to the impossibly unbreakable boundaries that exist. The main parts of speech that were used to carry out the theme, as well as the subject matter were irony, personification, simile, alliteration and imagery.

Many aristocratic households during the Renaissance kept a court, and while Shakespeares comedies usually feature at least one, his tragedies sometimes have one as well. The purpose of the court jester, also known as a fool or clown, was to amuse his noble masters and to tell the truth when no one else would think of telling itbut usually in an amusing way that subtly hid the credibility of his statements. In both Twelfth Night and King Lear, court jesters play a key role in the plot. by relying on their dual nature, pretending to be simpleminded to get away with saying things that others would certainly be punished for, when in fact they demonstrate themselves to be highly intelligent professionals who know how to manipulate their masters and speak truth to power.

In King Lear, the fool observes human nature and embodies the principles of worldly wit and wisdom. He disguises his wit through songs and riddles. So the fool also gets things across by not directly stating what he means.

In the Shakespeare's plays the fool is deformed or mentally challenged, therefore he is perceived to have no intelligence whatsoever. But in reality, the fool often is the wisest and wittiest out of all the characters.

The fool in King Lear frequently made the other characters look like dupes due the poor choices or decisions that they made in the play. The fool acts not only as a sort of chorus, making the central situation clearer by commenting on it more intelligently than the other characters, but as a foil to Lears frenzies. His jokes, riddles and scraps of rhyme, and his endless digs at Lears high-minded folly are like a trickle of sanity running through the play. In this case, King Lear would be the fool because he lost all his power and was abandoned by his two eldest daughters all because of an unwise decision he made when he banished his youngest daughter Cordelia.

Write my Essay on Who's the fool now?

In Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, the clown Feste earns his living by making pointed jokes, singing old songs, being generally witty, and offering good advice cloaked under a layer of foolishness. In spite of being a professional fool, Feste often seems the wisest character in the play. Feste manages to get himself out of problems by using his intelligence as well. In (I.V.61-6), Feste was on the verge of getting kicked out from Olivia's house, but Feste, summoning up all his wit and skill, manages to put Olivia into a better mood. He asks her why she is mourning, and she answers that she is mourning for her brother. He says that he thinks her brothers soul is in hell, and she replies that he is in heaven. The more fool, Madonna, to mourn for your brothers soul, being in heaven, he says and she responds approvingly (I.v.616). But Malvolio, Olivia's steward does not like Feste and asks coldly why Olivia wishes to keep a servant around who has no function except to poke fun at her. Olivia rebukes Malvolio for his self-love and says that Festes insults are only birdbolts that do no damage (I.v.777). If Feste were not perceived to be dim-witted he would have been punished for telling the lady Olivia that her brother is in hell.

In conclusion, the fool in King Lear and Feste in Twelfth Night possessed a hidden intelligence and wit from all the other characters. Unlike the other characters, these court jesters were able to speak out their minds without any repercussions as they were thought to be stupid and senseless by the other characters.

A bald eagle perches on a branch of a dead tree. He looks out of the corner of his eye at a hawk, who has strenuously hunted for a fish for several hours. Just as the hawk finally grasps a fish, the bald eagle swoops down from the tree and attacks him. The bald eagle gobbles down the fish, leaving the hawk breathless, wounded, and without the fish he worked hard to catch. The bald eagle, chosen as the national bird of the United States for its "long life, great strength, and majestic looks" in 178, shows laziness, greed, and no compassion. It does not appropriately portray America, the brave and honest. With its loyalty, unity, and determination, the robin would truly represent the United States.

The United States is loyal to the constitution in guaranteeing certain rights such as freedom. America's allies can rely on America to help defend their country if attacked. Like America, robins are loyal. After migrating south in the fall, robins can be counted on to be the first to arrive north in the spring. By returning to the same location to build nests each year, robins show a strong sense of duty and responsibility.

A flock of robins on a telephone line can be sited singing for long periods of time at dawn and dusk. Their cheerful caroling together shows unity. In order for a country to operate, it must work together. America's military, the best in the world, unites to work successfully. As they chirp together, robins also show encouragement. In the United States, the Declaration of Independence proclaims the right to pursue happiness.

Robins are self-reliant and determined. Unlike the bald eagle, robins catch their prey on their own. They go about their own business and if they have trouble, they are resourceful and do not rely on other birds to catch food for them. In the same way, The United States is its own country and never asks other countries for help….determined to lead the world in democracy. The United States teaches other countries about governing themselves through democracy.

Cheap University Papers on Why the Bald Eagle Should Not be The National Bird

The bald eagle may live a long life, is strong because of its great size, and certainly has majestic looks, but these qualitieslongevity, external strength, and appearanceare shallow. The national bird should be based on moral qualities that represent the country, such as loyalty, unity, and peace that the robin has.

In the novel Dorian Gray Dorian Gray s internal and external conflicts help to develophis unique personality. Also in this novel other major characters such as Basil Hallward and

Lord Henry Watton also are developed by their external and internal conflicts. In the novel

Dorian Gray Wilde use of both external and internal conflict helps to reveal and explore thecomplex personalities of his characters.

In Dorain Gray Wilde uses internal conflict in order to develop characters in hisnovel. The protagonist Dorain Grey is a goes through many internal conflicts throughout the

novel in which we get a better understanding of who is really is. For he is constantly battling

a guilty conscience, age, the picture that made him young forever, and Lord Henry s

corruption. The first major internal conflict with Dorian Gray occurs when he brutally rejects

Sibyl when she performs horribly on stage. In his mind he feels guilty for what he has done

but do Lord Henry s constant corruption Dorian comes to the realization that she was selfish

for killing herself. This conflict tells one that Dorian is very susceptible to outside influences.

During this time is also the first time one is able to observe the developing the internal

conflict in which Dorian becomes obsessed with his self portrait. This conflict entails that

Dorian is very materialistic and obsessive. Throughout all of Dorian s internal conflicts we

can make the assumption that he has no such moral code, but would if he wasn t under the

constant corruption of his mentor Lord Henry. This reinstates the fact that Dorian is very

susceptible to outside influences. The internal conflicts of Basil Hallward are minuscule in

comparison to those of Dorian.

In Dorian Gray the other two main characters are developed mostly by externaloonflcit. One can easily see that Basil and Lord Henry are somewhat selfish in the conflict

about who spends more time with Dorian. Basil wants Dorian s attention non-stop so that he

may paint beautiful pictures. On the other hand, Lord Henry wants Dorian s attention so that

he can corrupt him in his own unique way. However through this conflict one can see that

Basil does have a moral code, and also that he is quite passive when it comes to dealing with

other people. One can also see that Lord Henry is quite aggressive, and is also very

controlling or dominating. He like Dorian also has no moral code that he goes by. Through

external conflict Dorian s personality is also developed a little more. In the conflict in which

he killed Basil it is obvious that Dorian is very compulsive and doesn t think before he acts.

However in the end of the story where he stabs the picture and in doing so kills himself one

might see that Dorian might have somehow reformed and may be redeemed by doing this. By

by doing this last minute act of redemption he might actually have some redeeming qualities

in his personality.

In Dorian Gray Wilde uses both internal and external conflict to develop thepersonalities of his characters. In using both Wilde is able to more fully developed each

individuals characters unique personality. By doing this Wilde s makes his characters

immortal and can now live on in the minds of every reader of Dorain Gray.

The setting allows us to see the characters against the backdrop of world events. Influence of what is happening on a national level affect a local feelings/events. Allows us to understand the difference in cultures and what happens when those cultures mix.

Author moves the plot ahead using setting as an imp elent of the story line.

The setting adds a critical dimension to the plot and the characters of the story.

The events of 14 influenced the feelings and actions of the characters. The anti-Japanese sentiment that prevailed in the United States on a national level became a factor in the way the two races related to one another on the Island. Each culture had their own way of looking at the situation. The Japanese and the Americans had lived peacefully together on San Piedro Island until World War II began. Everyone treated each other as equals. When the war began the United States government removed the Japanese from San Pedro Island and assigned to camps in Seattle. When the war ended and the Japanese came back, some of the Americans still regarded the Japanese as their enemy. The Japanese weren?t treated fairly again.

On the other hand, the Japanese were angry with the Americans because they felt unfairly treated. They did not feel responsible for the war. Most of the Island?s Japanese fought in the American army. Rather than receiving commendations for their loyalty, the Islanders looked down upon them.

This attitude was clearly evident in the reactions of the jurors during the trial of Kabuo Miyamoto. The jurors believed that Kabuo Miyamoto was guilty just because he was Japanese. Not until the end of the story do we learn that a freighter traveled through Carl Hein?s fishing channel at 147 AM. producing a wake strong enough to throw a man overboard. If the new evidence had not been presented at the end of the story than he most likely would have been judged guilty. Only one juror thought that Kabuo was innocent.

Elements of the setting such as the weather and the terrain of San Piedro Island greatly influence the plot of the story. Some of the most dangerous conditions fisherman had to work under were the weather. In particular, the fog when Carl Heine was killed affect the story greatly. The thick fog that was present the night Carl heine was killed played a large roll in the trial of Kabuo Miyamoto. They believed the fog impaired Carl Heine?s sight and allowed Kabuo to board Carl?s boat. The cedar trees on the island also play a large role in the story. One of the trees has been hollowed out and this is where Ishmael Chambers and Hatsue Imada have their secret affairs together. Without this cedar tree Ishmael and Hatsue?s love could not have gone as far as it did. Another small aspect of the setting that influenced the plot was the large snowstorm that hit San Piedro Island during the trial. Ishmael Chambers was driving home when he saw the Imada Family?s car crashed on the side of the road. Ishmael offered to drive Hatsue where she needed to go. This unexpected opportunity allowed the two to talk again after many years of silence.

As the alarm goes off at five a.m. Katie and I lay in her fluffy pink bed

not wanting to get up. A few minutes later we hear her jolly father

yelling for us to get out of bed. It was going to be a long morning.

Slowly, Katie and I get up and go down her soft white stairs towards the

kitchen for one of Katie's mom's famous bagel and creme cheese with a cold

glass of orange juice.

After breakfast Katie's family and I lug our bags out to the cold Saab

with leather seats. We were getting ready to depart to St. Thomas for

February vacation. On the way to the airport Katie and I snuggle together

trying to keep warm on this cold winter morning in Maine. Soon, we would

be at the airport and on our way to an exotic place in the Caribbean.

The plane was loud and rather bumpy, but it was well worth it. When we

stepped off the plane into the outdoors of St. Thomas a warm night breeze

that was somewhat muggy came over us. It was time to shed our layers.

The temperature was very different from Maine. The air was thick and

heavy causing us to sweat as we walked indoors to the baggage claim.

The airport was small and colorful. The people were of all different

races and styles. It was unlike the Maine airport. There was a friendly

wave of attitude all around and many happy laughters. After we got our

bags we waited outside for our taxi to come. When he arrived a loud sort

of reggae music was coming from his big black van. He was a tall man who

was skinny and rather loud. He loaded our bags into the van and then we

were on our way.

The roads were windy and narrow. People drove a little bit too fast it

seemed, or maybe it was because I was not used to driving on the left side

of the road. The road was just wide enough for two cars to go on it in

opposite ways.

The resort we arrived at was large and gorgeous. There were many

families and couples. The sand from the ocean was all over the side walks

and the ocean breeze was making my hair flow. It smelt of salt and

freshness. The air was rather warm for eight in the evening and it seemed

as if the people here were much more friendly and open than in Maine. Our

place was very cozy, but large. There was three spacious bedrooms and a

loving room and a kitchen. There was a balcony where we could look at the

ocean. As soon as Katie and I unloaded our bags in the room, we went

straight towards the beach. We slid into our bathing suits and ran in the

sand towards the beach. The sand was still warm as if the sun had just

gone down. It felt so nice to slide between my toes. It was more quiet

out here other than the sound of waves crashing and the sound of the

people at the bar a little ways away from us. After a brief swim in the

salty warm ocean water, Katie and I head over to the little bar. It was

filled with people of all different ages and sizes. The smell of fried

food was lingering in the air. The food did not taste any different from

American food. After checking out the small friendly bar,Katie and I took

a walk along the shoreline and talked about things until we came up to the

lawn chairs by the beach. We lounged in these comfy chairs with cushions

and looked up at the beautiful sky. We wanted to hold this peaceful

moment in our hands for the rest of our lives.

At first, the idea of removing all human-made objects from the wilderness sounds like the charitable thing to do. It's the way things should be, right? In actuality, this plan doesn't hold as much merit as originally thought. Although it may be healthy for the environment to some extent, there is something else that needs to be considered. It is hard to decipher whether or not something should be deemed "unnatural." The American Indians, as well as their structures, were able to co-exist serenely with their wilderness surroundings. Society should be more worried about something's effects on its surroundings as opposed to assuming because it is man-made, it must be given the name "unnatural". If there is a negative result on the environment from something a human made, only then should it be termed as "unnatural".

Before there were cities and cars, factories and pollution, mass production and waste, there were people and nature. The Native Americans roamed the continent living peacefully and in sync with it. Some even looked at their surroundings as a greater power. In Louis Owens' essay, "The American Indian Wilderness," he recalls the Salishan people who consider the Glacier Peak Mountain to be, "Dakobed, or the Great Mother, the place of emergence." Considering Native Americans have homes and structures within wilderness areas, is it fair to say they must be removed simply because they are man-made? It can be argued that because these people have lived so serenely with nature that they, as well as their creations, are nature in themselves.

However, man has damaged many areas of the natural world. As a result of our pollution, there is a hole in the ozone layer. The rainforests have been significantly depleated, as well as many other areas, simply because we wanted what they supplied. Many animals have become endangered and even extinct because of our destructive behaviors. What is left of our great world should be savored and protected. Whatever we can do to keep what we have left, we should, as well as encourage regrowth in all that's been lost. That means taking anything out of the wild that is human-made, if it caused significant damage to the area, and replacing it with what was once lost or destroyed.

In Owens' essay, he discovers he's been narrow minded in believing man and nature should be separate. After his experience with the two old women, Owens begins to realize a new philosophy about the issue. "I began to understand that what I called 'wilderness' was an absurdity, nothing more than a figment of the European imagination." He goes on to say, " Before the European invasion, there was no wilderness in North America; there was only the fertile continent where people lived in a hard-learned balance with the natural world."

So how do we know where to draw the line? Is it fair for us to say that the children's jungle gym in the middle of a park is less "natural" than the hovering firs surrounding it? Society needs to begin looking to the past and the ancient people of our land as guidance in these questions. As Owens said in his essay, " unless all human beings can learn to imagine themselves as intimately and inextricably related to every aspect of the world they inhibit, with the extraordinary responsibilities such relationship entailsunless they can learn what the indigenous peoples of the Americas knew and often still knowthe earth simply will not survive."

Frankenstein

Oftentimes, when a film is created based on a novel, there are significant

modifications in the plot of the story. "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein", directed by

Kenneth Branagh, is one of those films. Based on the gothic horror novel

Custom Essays on Frankenstein

Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley, there are a several parts of the film that

are not supporting of the novel. A couple of these parts would be the death of

Justine Moritz, the death of Caroline Beaufort, and the creation and destruction

of the female creature.

Starting with Justine Moritz, the events accompanying her death do not

agree in the novel and in the film. In the novel, when Justine is accused of the

murder of William, she confesses to the crime, believing that she will thereby

gain salvation, but tells Elizabeth and Victor that she is innocent and miserable.

They remain convinced of her innocence, but Justine is soon executed. In the

film, Justine is accused of the crime and then helplessly dragged to the center of

town and publicly lynched without a trial or even an explaination.

Reviewing Caroline's death in the novel and in the film, she died in two

totally different manners. In the film Caroline dies while giving birth to Victor's

brother William despite the best efforts of his father to save her and the baby. In

the novel, just before Victor departs from Geneva to attend the university in

Ingolstadt, Caroline catches scarlet fever from Elizabeth, whom she had been

nursing back to health, and dies. On her deathbed, she begs Victor and

Elizabeth to marry.

Another significant difference in the film and novel is the creation and

destruction of the female creature. In the novel, after careful persuasion by the

monster, Victor quickly sets up a laboratory in a small shack and devotes many

hours to working on his new creature. While working one night, Victor begins to

think about what might happen after he finishes his creation. He imagines that

the two creatures might have children, creating a race of devils...on the earth.

In the midst of these reflections and growing concern, Victor looks up to see the

monster grinning at him through the window. Overcome by the monsters

hideousness and the possibility of a second creature like him, he destroys his

work in progress. In the film, Victor creates the female creature in the same

laboratory he created the original monster, in Ingolstadt. On the female creature

in the film, is Elizabeth's head along with other female's body parts. He

completes her and gives life her. The female is torn between her feelings for

Victor and for the monster. When she sees her reflection in a mirror, her

hideousness is too much to bare so she sets herself on fire and darts out of the

room running down the halls catching everthing that she touches on fire and

commits suicide.

One thing holds true for both the novel and the film is that the pursuit of

knowledge is at the heart of Frankenstein, as Victor attempts to leap beyond

accepted human limits and access the secret of life. Likewise, Rober Walton

attempts to exceed previous human explorations by trying to reach the North

Pole. This never-ending pursuit of knowledge, of the light, proves dangerous, as

Victors act of creation eventually results in the destruction of everyone dear to

him, and Walton finds himself harmfully trapped between sheets of ice. So even

amidst all the discrepancy between Frankenstein and "Mary Shelley's

Frankenstein", there is still a common motif that they both share. Some

knowledge is better left unknown.
