Often people make judgements based on the opinions of the others. This could be the meaning of what Arnold had in mind when he said, It is a very great thing to be able to think as you like; but after all, an important question remains what you think." In other words, people believe that they, themselves, come to their own conclusions based on their own thinking, while sometimes it is the thinking of others that provide them with their conclusions.

A reader must have this quote in mind when reading Charles Dickens's Sketches by Boz, and Orwell's Down and out in Paris and London. These two authors have used their minds to evaluate institutions and individuals. They then express their own thinking in their writing. One must recognize the authors's intentions to influence the reader to adopt his opinions.

One can find many examples where the two authors present their thoughts on institutions or groups of individuals. For example, Dickens, presents the Jew in a negative way in his Sketches by Boz. He writes that when one boards a coach, a Jew is always trying to sell hm "a six-penny-worth of oranges, a pen-knife, a pocket-book, a last-year's annual, a pencil-case, a piece of sponge, and a small series of caricatures" (7). This describes the Jew as being a pesky person, one who is below the dignity of a regular human being. He is not only a solicitor but also one who attempts to sell people useless things. The Jew is one who bothers people when they have important things to do, such as boarding their coach and reaching their destination. He is a pesky annoyance. This passage might influence the reader's thinking and sway him to be anti-Semitic. Although the reader may believe that he came to the conclusion on his own, it is really Dickens and Orwell who provided it to him.

Orwell, too, describes in Down and Out in Paris and London a "typical" Jew. Orwell expresses his feelings towards Jews in a negative way. He writes

The shopman was a red-haired Jew...From his manner one would have supposed that we had done him some injury...he paid incredible low prices. For a hat which I had bought for twenty-five shillings and scarcely worn he gave five francs...Once I saw him take a good overcoat from an old woman, put two white billiard balls in her hand, then push her...out of the store...It would have been a pleasure to flatten the Jew's nose (0).

Orwell makes it a point of telling the reader that the man was a Jew. He plays upon the stereotype of the Jew as a tricky and deceptive individual. In addition the Jew takes advantage of the weak such as the "old woman" whom he "pushes...out of the store." Essentially, he preys upon the weak without a sense of remorse.

In other instances in the book, Orwell underscores the fact that Jews are untrustworthy misers by showing that one should "trust a snake before a Jew" (70). The snake, the sly creature responsible for the Original Sin, is more trustworthy than a Jew. The reader should be aware that this is the author's thinking and perhaps a reflection of the times.

Orwell does not only express his opinions about Jews, but about women too. Orwell thinks little of women's status and behavior. He writes "When a badly dressed man passes [women], they shudder away from him with...disgust, as though he were a dead cat" (1). One would think from this quote that women were shallow and superficial. In addition, Orwell writes about cooks, and when describing them he comments that "It is because of punctuality....that men cooks are preferred to women" (76). Orwell suggests that women are infrequently punctual and are many times late. Women are irresponsible and cannot be trusted with an important job. Finally, he completes his picture of women when he writes of a woman tramp. He writes, "There was a woman among us, the first woman tramp I had ever seen. She put on great airs of dignity, and if anyone sat down near her she sniffed and moved farther off...[she was] a small, blinkered, feminine soul that had learned absolutely nothing from her years on the road" (14). The woman Orwell depicts was a tramp, just like all the other men. Yet despite this fact, she believed herself to be superior to all the others. They all shared a similar poverty, yet the woman looked down on the rest of them. In addition, he suggests that, even though a woman could have been a tramp for years, she still was a weak person who was so "dense" that she never learned how to properly survive in the world. Thus, one might conclude that Orwell believes that women are shallow, self-absorbed, self-centered, condescending weak, and dense. When reading Down and Out in Paris and London, one must be conscious of the image that Orwell is attempting to convey to the reader. The reader must be aware of this, and when formulating his/her opinion of women, s/he must keep in mind that Orwell's writings might influence the formulation of his/her opinions. Otherwise, the reader might believe that it is he himself who has formulated these ideas, when in fact it might not be true.

The examples shown above were not merely brought to discuss the authors' views of different groups of people; rather they show that very often writers express their own thinking in their writing. They integrate their social and philosophical opinions into their writing. When reading works written by such authors, it is important for the reader to be conscious of these influences. For after all, "what you think" matters more than being "able to think".

A war is a state of open, armed, often prolonged conflict carried on between nations, states, or parties. Every war has its reasons weather it be a good and acceptable reason or a bad reason. If people are going to be killed and the country itself be damaged because of the war, people will want to hear a reason. Some wars are inevitable and some are not. It all depends on its cause. The American Civil War is thought to be an inevitable war. Many are convinced that there was no other way to solve the tension between the North and the South. The difference in thinking of slavery of both sides was one of the reasons for the build up of the tension between the two sides but it was not the only reason as some may think. Economical differences and political differences also led to the tension between the two sided which resulted in a war. The war was considered inevitable because the South would not give up slavery, and the North would not let the South separate from the Union.

The part slavery had on the Civil War cannot be ignored but it should not be responsible for the main cause. It was the difference in the North and the South that slavery created which led to the war. Slavery led to economic differences. In the South, slavery became a way of life. It was a large part of their society. Because they were farmers, they needed many workers to plant and gather. The South thought that if slavery was to be abolished, than their economy would fall because there would be no workers. In the North, slavery was not needed as much. The northern part of the US was mostly manufacturers. They hired workers instead of buying slaves. The South justified slavery by saying that slavery was in the bible and that slaves were treated better than the workers at factories in the North. Slavery also led to other differences. Because of slavery, different religion formed. In the North, Methodist Episcopal Church and the Quakers of Pennsylvania emerged. They were all clearly opposed to slavery and the South. In the South, the Baptists and the Presbyterians became the form of Christianity which supported the southern beliefs. All these churches were Christian and the only difference between them where their thoughts on slavery. Political differences also arose because of slavery. Because there were two different societies formed from slavery, each side required its own political support. This was how difference parties emerged. The South needed political parties that supported slavery.

Power was one of the causes of the tension between the two sides. By 1850, only a third of the US population lived in the South and more states were becoming non-slave states. The South was loosing its power in the government and no longer had an effective voice. After Abraham Lincoln, a republican who was determined to keep slavery from spreading, was elected, South Carolina seceded from the Union. The rest of the South followed. The tension between the two sides grew and a little miscommunication sparked the war.

The American Civil War was considered inevitable because it could not have been stopped. The way to avoid the war was to abolish slavery but that was not going to happen. The South needed the slaves and it became a crucial part of their society. Another way the war could have been avoided was if the North just allowed the South to separate without any trouble or if the South didn't separate from the North. Either of them could not have happened. The North did not want the South to separate because it would hurt both sides in the end. Abraham Lincoln stated, ¡°A house divided against itself cannot stand.¡± They both relied on each other for materials for manufacturing and protections. The North was willing to kill many people for the good of the whole country. After the South did not want to stay with the North and did not want to abolish slavery, a war was inevitable. The North had to do something even if that meant killing others.

Slavery, which was an issue throughout American History, was still the problem during the American Civil war. If the problem of slavery was solved many years before the civil War and not left for the later generations, than there might not have been a war in the first place. Some might say that the American Civil War could have been avoided but with a lot of time and compromises. However, this is too risky. By giving a lot of time to resolve the conflict, the conflict itself might get worse. The country might slowly start to fall apart because they are not agreeing with each other. This is the case today with the war on Iraq. The war we are in probably could have been avoided if the US waited and tried to compromise with Saddam. The US saw this too risky. It might give Saddam time to plan an attack on the US or other countries around them. Al in all, the Civil War was the right thing to do. The country is together, united and working well today.

Cities have grown into sprawling grids of homes, businesses, parks, and schools. With this growth, individual developments have also grown in size so that groups of homes are quickly developed in unison to form subdivisions. These large-scale residential developments can have an enormous impact on the area within which they are built. As communities have increased in size due to new developments, school, safety, water, and transportation systems all began to suffer under the burden of a larger population. In some regions of unregulated growth, the building quality of the new homes has suffered as well. The effects of unregulated growth combine to present a huge threat the quality of life for both existing and new residents of an area.

To address the issues which new developments present, a thorough permitting process has been developed to insure that the quality of life and services offered to the public are not disrupted by a new development. The timeline for the permitting process for a typical subdivision reflects the care with which counties and cities take when evaluating a potential development. The timeline can typically surpass the time required to complete the construction phase, following an approval. Applications for development, which properly agree with state, county, and city guidelines, can expect a stamp approval after 6 months of review procedures at the earliest, while ground can only be broken for some developments after years of revision and public hearings.

Applications for development address land-use regulations, growth goals, and the effects which the proposed development will have on existing infrastructure, public services, and the environment. In most areas the application and permitting process for a typical subdivision is started when a developer approaches a city or county Land Use Planner with a rough proposal of a potential a subdivision. This proposal is evaluated by the Planning Department that has jurisdiction over the area to be developed. This initial step and resulting response is reflected in a feasibility report, which evaluates if the development agrees with the goals established for a parcel of land established by the city and county. These goals may reflect the desire to preserve open spaces, create a high density development, or delay development of particular area until after other regions within an Urban Growth Boundary(UGB) have been developed.

Do my essay on Permit Process for Homes CHEAP !

The feasibility report can indicate that the proposed development is approved, conditionally approved, or denied by the governing Planning Department. An application that is conditionally approved means that it will be approved only if certain criteria are met. An example of this criterion might be for land to be set aside for a school or park, or for a payment to be made for the upgrade of existing water treatment, or traffic control devices. In the event of a denial or conditional approval, the developer has the option of a appealing to the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals (LUBA). LUBA is a board of land-use planners who can uphold the decision made by the lower authority or declare that the case be reevaluated. Development can also be halted when citizens affected by an initially approved development file an objection which results in a public hearing and subsequent appeals by both developers and citizens against a development.

Following a preliminary approval, the developer must then proceed with evaluating the roadway, water, utility, and environmental issues associated with the development. The subdivision must obtain approval from the local sanitary authority and water commission to insure that the homes will have both drinking and wastewater systems. Public power, phone, and gas providers must also be consulted with to insure proper utilities for any development. This union of utility provider and developer often includes the Public Utilities Commission (PUC).

The most expensive and often overlooked aspect of any development is the cost incurred by minimizing the environmental impact of the development. Whenever wetlands or waterways are encountered during the development process, labor intensive preservation may be required in addition to expensive permits. The management of storm water collected by paved surfaces can also require planning to prevent pollution. Habitat protection considerations can also be encountered, and may require studies to establish the presence of an endangered species.

Ground can only be broken to start a subdivision after all of the required permits are acquired. Everything from the manner with which the property is to be used, down to the breaker box size of a home, must be addressed by the developer and approved by the city or county within which the development is to take place. The process of gathering the permits and meeting the criteria established for development adds approximately $15,000.00 to the cost of each home constructed. The time and money consumed by the permitting process prior to the development of a subdivision may seem excessive, but it is small in comparison to the cost which would otherwise be paid by the community as a whole.

Over the years computer technology has gone through many changes. Today there are numerous choices for an organization when deciding on a computer system to implement. Of course, many factors come into consideration with this decision such as, the size of the organization, the type of application, functional needs, and cost. There are small workgroups consisting of a handful of PCs, larger Client/Server configurations, midrange computer systems, such as the IBM AS/400, and mainframe computers. In this paper I will compare and contrast mainframes to PCs or microcomputers. The main topics I will discuss are performance and reliability, centralization, utilization, size and cost.

Large computers called mainframes prevailed many years ago when computer technology was first emerging. Today, mainframes are still in use in many organizations. These computers have many benefits to an organization. First, these massive computers are very fast. Processing power is what these computers are known for. They are optimized for large amounts input/output (IO) requests, and as a result, are capable of handling thousands of connections at one time without compromising performance. Secondly, mainframes are designed to store large amounts of data. One of these computers is able to hold hundreds and even thousands of gigabytes of data making them ideal for database applications or data warehousing. Mainframes are very reliable also, usually having redundancy and fault tolerance with power supplies and disk drives, and system checking features informing operators of overall system health.

Another advantage of using a mainframe is its centralized management. Connections to mainframes are usually a telnet session or some form a terminal emulation. The device accessing the computer could be what is called a "dumb terminal", which is basically a monitor and a keyboard that has a direct connection to the mainframe. The device could also be a computer running an emulator to simulate one of these dumb terminal connections. The benefits of this environment are centralized control of administration, programming, and security. This centralization makes administering security, and programming upgrades easier, by only having to apply them to the mainframe and not each device. Also, many different types of computers can access the mainframe as long as there is an available emulator.

There are some disadvantages to mainframe computers. They are typically large computers, but as technology advances, their size is reducing. Many organizations do not have a room large enough with the appropriate temperature controls to store a mainframe. These computers are also very expensive. They can cost anywhere from hundreds of thousands of dollars to millions. Another disadvantage of mainframes is that they are generally used for one purpose or one program. An organization like a bank or hospital may use a mainframe to run its core program and that is it. There is no other functionality to the system.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Mainframes Vs Personal Computers

Utilizing personal computers in an organization have many advantages. First, the processing power of PCs is increasing every year. It may be safe to say that a high end PC of today may have the processing speed of an early mainframe. The amount of disk storage available to PCs is also increasing at leaps and bounds. Available storage is in the one hundred gigabyte range. Flexibility of personal computers is a big advantage. In the work place they can give an employee access to the organizations midrange or mainframe computer application, allow them to run client applications suites, and to communicate with coworkers through a mail client. Also, the size of PCs seems to be shrinking year by year. A smaller personal computer is appealing as it takes up less space in an office. Finally, personal computers are inexpensive. A low end PC may cost an organization $800.00 to $1,000.00, while a high end PC can cost anywhere from $,000.00 to $,000.00.

Personal computers have some disadvantages also. Most PCs do not have any redundancy or fault tolerance built in. If a power supply burns up, the computer will not function until your replace it. If a hard drive crashes, the data is usually unrecoverable. Another drawback to personal computers is its decentralization. If a company utilizes a network consisting of servers and PCs, each computer will have to be individually maintained. This maintenance can include hardware upgrades, software updates, and even some security. It is true that today's technology allows centralized management of networked computers for software and security deployment, but many organizations may to have this ability and each computer may have to be individually maintained.

As you can see, there are advantages and disadvantages to mainframes and personal computers. Deciding on a technology is depending on many factors including size of the organization, application, and cost. Both have their advantages and it takes an understanding of which one could be more fully utilized in an organization's environment. As technology advances with microcomputers and server-based computing, will mainframes may be a second choice to server farms and thin client technology?

Please note that this sample paper on Mainframes Vs Personal Computers is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on Mainframes Vs Personal Computers, we are here to assist you. Report - Mysterious of the World

Statement

In this report I intend to examine some of the worlds most famous mysterious. The three I have chosen are the Loch Ness Monster, the Abominable Snowman and the Bermuda Triangle. I will give a detailed analysis of the topic.

The study of the unknown has intrigued people for many years as mankind has always had an interest in a good mystery. The search for truth has brought about many different views. There are numerous world famous mysterious that remain unsolved to this day. Some of these mysterious include the Loch Ness Monster, the Abominable Snowman and the Bermuda Triangle.

Order custom research paper on Mysterious

All around the world there are reputed to be sea serpents or monsters in many bodies of fresh water. The most recognised of them is the Loch Ness Monster. This legendary animal supposedly resides in the depths of Scotlands Loch Ness. Sightings of the monster date back to the early 10s and, since then, there have been almost three thousand recorded sightings of the monster. Most reports depict an unidentified creature with a long neck and a small head sticking out of the water. Many pictures have been taken of this creature but most scientists dismiss these and refuse to believe any such creature exists. They put it down to overactive imaginations, and, as for the photographs, scientists say they are not clear enough to identify any possible creature. Some people believe that Loch Ness is the site of a breeding colony of large unknown aquatic animals, due to the fact that it was once an arm of the sea. Investigations have been conducted since 16 in attempt to unravel the mystery. Researchers have flocked with their cameras and sonars, hopes, fears and aspirations to try and solve one of the greatest mysterious on earth. Some which in fact indicate that there just might be some unknown creature in the depths of the Loch Ness. Evidence however, is inconclusive, and the controversy continues.

. Along with the Loch Ness Monster, the Abominable Snowman is also regarded as one of the great mysterious of the world. Also known as the Yeti, it is a legendary creature of the Himalayan mountain region. According to locals, the Yeti is but one of several unidentified creatures that inhabit the highlands of southern Asia. This creature is said to walk upright and have the appearance of half-man, half-ape. It is described as having long, reddish-brown hair all over its body, a high-pitched whistling scream, hands that consist of four fingers each, feet that point backwards and a vile, pungent smell. Many of the descriptions given to this creature are based upon the findings of large, unidentified footprints in the snow. In order to ascertain the truth behind these legends, countless expeditions have been undertaken but nothing was found which could help prove the existence of this creature. Most experts refuse to take the matter of the Abominable Snowman seriously and view it as peoples imaginations getting the better of them. The footprints used to support these legends are thought by scientists to be made by drifting snow and falling rocks. The legend of the abominable snowman has been kept alive till this day, mostly by the Sherpa, a tribe of people living in the Himalayas. These people have always kept the belief that the abominable snowman is a true fact of life. To them he is seen as a religious figure, to

be feared as well as protected. Without any solid evidence, no one can prove this legendary animal from the mountains exist, so the mystery continues to confuse us.

Like the Loch Ness Monster and the Abominable Snowman, the Bermuda Triangle presents another intriguing mystery to the world. The Bermuda or Devils triangle is an imaginary triangular area of the Atlantic Ocean, just east of Florida where ships and planes are said to disappear in numbers too large for it to just be a coincidence. It has led many to believe that supernatural forces inhabit this area of sea. More than 00 planes, boats and ships are believed to have disappeared without trace. This includes over 1000 seamen and airmen. In most of these disappearances, it is a fact that no distress signal was ever received from any of these crafts. This indeed heightens the mystery of what happened out there. Although violent storms and downward air currents frequently occur in this area, scientists have not revealed anything extremely peculiar. Countless theories have been offered to explain what happened to these missing ships and planes but it is usually put down to human error. Bad weather and rough seas also share the blame. But could there truly be an unnatural force at work in this geographical triangle or are these disappearances just coincidence? Either way, numerous people remain unwilling to step over the boundary into the Devils Triangle.

The mystery of the Loch Ness Monster, the Abominable Snowman and the Bermuda Triangle are just a few of the many world famous unsolved mysteries. Although many attempts have been made to try and explain these, it is very difficult to ascertain the truth due to the lack of evidence supporting these theories. There are many people who believe that there is something out there, but on the other hand, the thought of it may seem ridiculous to some and others will think there must be a rational explanation for everything but just what is it? This question will remain unanswered, as it is impossible to say but maybe in the future we will discover the truth but until then we humans remain intrigued and confused.

The cause of homosexual behaviors has long been a controversial topic debated by scientists, psychologists, and many others among the general population. The Newsweek article Born or Bred discusses many possible causes of homosexuality. According to the research done in 11 by neuroscientist Simon LeVay, the area of the brain that controls sexual activity called the hypothalamus, was less than half the size in homosexual males compared to heterosexual males. This result tells us that homosexuals might not have gotten a chance to choose their sexuality because they were simply born into it. But there are loopholes in this research because Levay's subjects were all cadavers, therefore he could not dispute nor verify Kenneth Klivington's argument that, "the brain influences behavior, behavior shapes experience, experience affects the organization of the brain, and so forth." Klivington seemed to think that there are environmental factors to be considered when dealing with the causes of homosexuality. He believes that sexual orientation has certain affects on brain structure as he points out, "the brain's neural networks reconfigure themselves in responses to certain experiences." Psychologist Michael Bailey and psychiatrist Richard Pillard conducted a research involving the study of homosexuals among twins. The result of their research concludes that genetic factors take on a big part of a person's sexual orientation. This can lift the burden of self-blame from homosexuals because they are no longer the blame for their own sexuality. The three major theories that are used in an attempt to explain the causes of homosexuality are biological, psychoanalytical, and learning theories. Biological theories include factors such as genetic, prenatal, brain, and hormonal imbalance. Of the four, only research on genetic and brain factor seems to have real evidence to support the biological aspect of homosexuality, while the other two have inconsistent findings. The psychoanalytical theory is based on the works of Sigmund Freud, who believed that children go through different stages of development. And he concluded that, "the homosexual is fixated at an immature stage of development." When evaluated, psychoanalytic theory is said to, "…operate under the assumption that homosexuality is deviant or abnormal." And even though Freud came to accept that homosexuality is normal sexual behavior in his later writings, it did not have as much of an impact compared to his earlier writings. The third theory is the learning theory, which emphasizes the idea that sexual orientation is learned. "People are born sexual, not heterosexual or homosexual. Only through learning does one of these behaviors become more likely than the other." One of the examples that they give includes a girl whose first heterosexual sex experience was through rape. She is then likely to try to avoid the unpleasantness of her first experience with heterosexual sex by becoming homosexual. The Interactionist Theory is mainly based on the works of psychologist Daryl Bem. Although Bem supports the biological point of view, he does not agree that it is the only and direct factor that determines one's sexual orientation. "He (Bem) believes that biological factors exert their influence on sexual orientation through their influence on temperament in childhood." In the interactionist theory, gender conformity plays a big role in a person's sexual preference. According to Bem, children who are gender conforming will become heterosexuals because they will begin to find the opposite sex appealing as they grow up. But children who are gender nonconforming will become homosexuals because they will come find their own gender appealing. The empirical data that is provided by the research of sexual orientation done by Alan Bell, Martin Weinberg, and Sue Hammersmith showed some stunning results. The three researchers interviewed 7 gay men and lesbian women and 477 heterosexual men and women in the San Francisco area. Their results basically concluded that, "…all the environmental explanations are inadequate and are not supported by the data." And also, "Sexual orientation seems to be determined before adolescence." Their findings leans more towards the idea that sexual orientation is mainly determined by biological factors. "Nature, not nurture, is the main factor involved in sexual orientation." This statement is made to assist the idea that a person does not get to choose whether they will be homosexual or heterosexual because they're born into it. It also means that it is not our surroundings and our environment that channels us into our sexual orientation. Rather, it is our biological make up that decides which route we will take. There have been many researches conducted to support this statement. One of these researches is Simon LeVay's study on the human brain. In his 11 study, LeVay, a neuroscientist in La Jolla, California, found that the hypothalamus, the section of the brain that controls sexual activity, was less than half the size in gay men than in the heterosexuals. It also appears that the hypothalamic cells of the homosexual male were more similar to those of women compared to those of heterosexual males. Also in 11, Michael Bailey and Richard Pillard did a research on sexual orientation, but their research was based on twins. They recruited heterosexuals and homosexuals that had twins, either identical or non-identical. They found that within 56 gay men who had an identical twin brother, 5% of them were both gay. But among 54 gay men with a non-identical twin brother, only % of them were both gay. Two years later, this study was done on lesbians. The findings correspond to those of the earlier research done on gay men. Within 71 lesbians who had an identical twin sister, 48% were both lesbians. And of the 7 lesbians that had a non-identical twin sister, only 16% were both lesbians. It is conclusive that, "…the rate of concordance is substantially higher for identical twins that for non-identical twins argues in favor of a genetic contribution to sexual orientation." In 181, Alan Bell, Martin Weinberg, and Sue Hammersmith, of the Kinsey Institute, did another research on this subject. During this study, they recruited 7 homosexual males and females and also 477 heterosexual males and females. They then spent three to five hours in a detailed interview with each subject asking questions about the subject's childhood and adolescence. The results they found denied any environmental involvement in one's sexual orientation. They found Freud's psychoanalytic theory to be "grossly exaggerated." It seemed that bad relationships with one's parents have little or no effect on the person's sexuality. They also found that one's sexual orientation seemed to be determined before adolescence. So based on their study, environmental factors are inadequate and biological factors are what determines one's sexuality. There are researches and theories that support nurture, instead of nature, as the cause of sexual orientation. Kenneth Klivington believes that instead of the brain structure having an affect on sexual orientation, it could very well be the other way around. As the Newsweek article states, "One fascinating NIH study found that in people reading Braille after becoming blind, the area of the brain controlling the reading finger grew larger." Klivington thinks that the brain structures according to experience as he states, "…the brain influences behavior, behavior shapes experience, experience affects the organization of the brain, and so forth." The learning theory is also a supporter of environmental factors. According to the learning theory, we were born without a sexual identity. It is through later learning that we become either heterosexual or homosexual. For example, if a person has an unpleasant experience with heterosexual sex, there's a chance that they might turn homosexual. This theory also derives on the assumption that we are channeled into our sexuality by rewards and punishments imposed on us by our society. "Punishing a young person for engaging in heterosexual sexual behavior may not eliminate the behavior but rather rechannel it in a homosexual direction." But there are inconsistencies with this assumption because homosexuals are often punished by society, but they have not ceased to exist. After reading the Newsweek article and the hand out, my position is the same as it was before I read them. I truly believe the statement "Nature, not nurture, is the main factor involved in sexual orientation." I've always believed that a person's sexual orientation is something way more complicated for the environment to be able to tamper with. In my opinion, environmental factors may be able to affect a person into making temporary judgments or to experiment new things. But the person's true sexuality is defined within one's self and is permanent. I also believe that many more studies can and will be done on the causes of sexual orientation, but it is unlikely that someone will be able to reach a definite answer. In the words of Evelyn Hooker, "Why do we want to know the cause? It's a mistake to hope that we will be able to modify or change homosexuality…If we understand its nature and accept it as a given, then we come much closer to the kind of attitudes which will make it possible for homosexuals to lead a decent life in society." In my seventeen years in this world the one thing that keeps me constantly reeling with confusion is the "L" word. I have come to find that love, the most overly worn out word in the English language, has had me at quite a loss. I have come to find that many other teenage girls feel the same way I do because not many teens know what love is or when exactly to say, "I love you " to someone. But sometime during the eighth grade, the words "going out" were quickly replaced by the sophisticated term "dating." This became serious stuff and remains so now.

Recently I ended a three-month relationship with a guy named Eddie. It was a great three months but that "L" word can really tear a relationship between two young people apart. Not that there is anything wrong with saying "I love you " to someone but only being with the person for three months can really scare them away. This is what happened to me. I remember how Eddie gave me a dozen roses on our two-month anniversary. Going home and looking at these roses, I thought nothing or anyone would ever come between us because we liked each other too much to let that happen. Unfortunately after two and a half months of dating everything seemed to start going downhill. The reasons for the deterioration of the relationship did not involve cheating or a lack of communication. Actually, more than enough communication existed. The "L" word brought me to break up with this great guy who would do anything just to make me happy.

I suppose telling me he loved me was not that big of a deal, but what made me not want to be with him even more was when he called me at least twenty-five times within two days. His excuse for this was, he was worried something was wrong or that someone was trying to break us up. I tried to be a good girlfriend by attempting to cope with him, but I could not; I am only seventeen years old and do not need anyone calling me more than four times a day. Some girls may like being smothered by their boyfriend, but I am sure there is some limit as to how many times you can call your girlfriend in a day. The other thing, which scared me the most, was how Eddie told me he loved me while I wondered whether or not I really wanted to deal with a serious relationship my senior year. Another thing I could not forget was how he continuously told me I would be the one to put a stop to the relationship. This annoyed me because it made me feel he could not trust me and that he did not have faith in our relationship. Although Eddie and I are friends now I still look at the dozen dried roses he gave me and remember all the good times we had together.

Dating for American teens has changed over the years. Nowadays dating is just like having a fling with someone and trying the whole relationship thing out to make sure they can commit to each other without being unfaithful. Dating also seems to be an experiment of how to kiss, how to love, and how to deal with losing love. The reason why "dating" may be seen this way is because some of us teens have a hard time being with one person for more than five months because we want to be single and try the variety of people that are out there in society. Also because some people do not want to get attached to someone and then later down the road get their heart broken by that person whom they thought was "the one" for them.

Write my Essay on the "l" word for me

The things I guess the average boyfriend does not do all that much while dating is calling his girlfriend more than four times in a day. The same goes for girls except some people may think girls should have some leeway on this because girls seem to be more dramatic or emotional in relationships then boys do. Although there are guys who can be a lot more dramatic then girls can be because the guys maybe be taking the relationship a little more serious then his girlfriend maybe. The other thing, which comes in to play when "dating" someone, is how much the two love birds like each other because if there really are some sparks between the two and the couple is serious and wants to work on the relationship then maybe the two of them are really mean to be. There are also those teens that just like to get into relationships because they need attention from someone so they can feel secure about themselves and maybe even loved or just want to try the whole "dating" thing for themselves instead of people telling them no to take a chance because they will just get their heart broken.

All of us teens have life left to live and love yet to give. Though some girls and guys may think it would practical to search for that sagacious guy or girl, many teens still turn their heads or stare straight ahead to see if the person who passed by or coming their way could be the "one."

It seems that the older we get, the more teenagers seem to have a heart that is quick to fall in love. Many teens have learned that there really is a time when you find someone who seems to share the same hopes and dreams as you- someone to whom you give your whole heart. I believe this is the way teens have learned the pain of a broken heart. I will say that for myself that for "puppy love" the pain at the time seems never ending. But soon you learn to pick up the pieces of you shattered heart, mold them carefully into almost what your heart was before (for many teens once you have had your heart broken once, it is never quite the same), and then both girls and guys become more discerning about which Juliets or Romeos they fall for.

Joan Morgan captured the aspect of misogyny from hip-hop artists in a compelling way. When she explained about her semi-abusive relationship with her boyfriend of many years, I felt how she might have been feeling. I felt this way because I caught myself doing the same things that he was. Not that I just outrageously or belligerently disrespected my girlfriend, I unconsciously say things that I do not mean, but not meaning them how they are said. What I am explaining is that the words I say like, "well I guess you're just being a punk" or "shut up cry baby" when she is upset when I've done something is harsh, but I don't mean it how it sounds. I understand how women feel when they say that men have no emotions towards "little things," however; I just don't understand how most of these "things" are relevant. Ms. Morgan also hit topics such as how men see women as just sex tools. This statement is true; nevertheless, there is a vast majority of men in every race (not just black) that degrade women on television and in real life situations. Myself, I do not fall into the category of chauvinism because of the love I have for all women. These rappers that are up and coming and in the industry now are all into the misogynistic approach to rap. The reasons are because of how the women that are behind the scenes with the rappers act. What I mean is that most of these girls that are doing this are young in age, and out to get some money from rappers. Rapper Guru of Gang Starr said it best when he wrote "A yo fellas you gotta be careful today / Watch out for games that these females play / cause some break the rules and some don't play fair / You might get caught out there / If you're not aware" - Games (The Big Picture - 000) written by Big L & Guru. The realization of this has given rappers opportunity to place women in the "bitch, ho" category. Being a rapper and a producer also, I do not see how I should position my style to fit the mainstream audience's favorable characteristics. It seems that now if a person wants to sell any units in the rap industry, said person would have make a record that has some formal correlation of misogyny in the music or it will not sell. A very few of the elite, platinum rappers, such as Jay-Z, Eminem, Lil' Flip, or even Nas cannot say that they have not written a song that has not fell into this category. However, artists such as Common, Mos Def & Talib Kweli, and Jurassic 5 have not been given all the praises from the mainstream because of their afro-centric lyrics that do not condone the actions of their constituents. Because of this these rappers have not received their statuses as "great emcees." While I object to the commercialism that rap has seen over the past ten years, one the most influential emcees that I highly respect is a semi-misogynist. Nas's material has a base of greatness that hits me with inspiration. I believe that his feelings towards women come from the way he was treated by them while coming up. However, there is no excuse for his words, but he tells of how young women in life are exploited, "A young wild beautiful love child / You like them thug style/ link rockin / then mink coppin / Hit you on the sink a hundred dollar / drink poppin / The headll make him take you shoppin' / a foul doctrine" - Black Girl Lost (It Was Written - 16) written by Nas & Jojo Hailey. I understand how Ms. Morgan believes that men do not respect women, but some women destroy the mentality of men when they do most of these extreme actions. I believe some women are rebellious, but the vast majorities are respectable. Joan Morgan has a profound respect for her female counterparts, knowing their flaws, and maintains her feminist state of mind. I believe in her words and people should take heed to them. Nevertheless, I still believe that famous quote by Cee-Lo Green "Well I say/ youre my, beginning my end / Youre my sista lover and friend/ God is your light from within / It shines through your beautiful skin / What they say bout you aint true / Theres no me if there is no you / I hope that you understand / you got to respect yourself before I can" - Beautiful Skin (Still Standing - 18) written by Goodie Mob.

A fabliau is a short, comic tale in verse that originated in France in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. These poems, obviously, were initially written in French and, apart from the English versions nearly 100 years later, were almost invariably in octosyllabic couplets. Of the enormous number of fabliaux produced, about only 150 survived, and only about twenty authors are known. The stories, because of their characteristic brevity and emphasis on plot and climax, are considered a forefather of the modern short story. Fabliaux have a recurring theme that deals with domestic comedy, in familiar places; frequently involving love triangles with gullible victims, ingenuous tricksters, and deception designed to delude husbands to clear the path for new lovers.

Fabliaux regularly have a couple of things presented to the reader early in the tale, that of which includes the local setting and the person the story generally focuses on. This holds true for the "Miller's Tale", the "Reeve's Tale," and the "Sailor's Tale," as well as various others, alike. The Miller's Tale begins "Once on a time was dwelling in Oxford A wealthy lout who took in guests to board, And of his craft he as a carpenter." Here the setting is Oxford and the character introduced is the carpenter. The initial lines of the Reeve's Tale read "At Trumpington, not far from Cambridge town, There is a bridge where through a brook runs down, Upon the side of which brook stands a mill; And this is very truth that now I tell. A miller dwelt there." Yet again a character is presented, and in this instance more information is provided about the location than the previous. The Sailor's proves slightly different than the preceding two in that this tale uses merely a single line to impart the initial information. "A merchant, dwelling, once, at Saint Denis,"

A very significant and very familiar element in a fabliau, especially in the Canterbury Tales, is a plot concentrated on a love triangle and sexual appetite. This plot usually involves trickery, deceiving suitors, beautiful wives, and gullible husbands. The purpose of this type of plot was, in many cases, used to slander a particular person or group of people. The Reeve's Tale was told in reaction to the Miller's Tale and the bad word that it yielded towards carpenters. The Miller's Tale represents a failed attempt by the suitors in gaining favors by their desired woman. This tale concerns a carpenter named John and his wife, Alison, who has two other lovers. One of these lovers beguiles John and persuades him to sleep in a tub so that he will survive the forthcoming flood.

Now, John, said Nicholas, I will not lie;

But Ive found out, from my astrology,

As I have looked upon the moon so bright,

That now, come Monday next, at nine of night,

Shall fall a rain so wildly mad as would

Have been, by half, greater than Noahs flood.

This world, he said, in less time than an hour,

Shall all be drowned, so terrible is this shower;

….

Presently go, and fetch here to this inn

A kneading-tub, or brewing vat, and win

One each for us, but see that they are large,

Wherein we may swim out as in a barge,"

John, in the middle of his sleep, is awoken by one of the lovers, and in the process both men are scared off.

The Reeve's Tale, opposed to the Miller's Tale, represents a successful attempt by the two male characters at obtaining their desired women. This story tells about two scholars, Alain and John, whom, when spending the night at a miller's house, sleep with his daughter and wife, respectively.

"And up he rose and to the girl he crept.

This wench lay on her back and soundly slept,

Until hed come so near, ere she might spy,

It was too late to struggle, then, or cry;

And, to be brief, these two were soon alone.

Now play, Alain! For I will speak of John.

….

She [the wife] found the bed, and thought of naught but good,

Because her babys cradle by it stood,

And knew not where she was, for it was dark;

But calmly then she crept in by the clerk,

And lay right still, and would have gone to sleep.

But presently this John the clerk did leap,

And over on this goodwife did he lie."

In the morning the daughter tells Alain the location of the scholars stolen grain. The miller wakes, and in the commotion the wife accidentally knocks out her husband in the dark. With that, the two scholars escape.

The tales told by a fabliau are like none other; they are humorous, bawdy, and concise. With a rapid introductory of characters and setting, the stories swiftly proceed keeping them continually interesting for the reader. Fabliaux follow a primary pattern of plots and climaxes and typically deal with love, adultery, and trickery designed to delude. With many elements similar, they are considered a predecessor to the modern-day short story.

Colonel Joshua Chamberlain

"The Killer Angels"

The Civil War battle of Gettysburg has been called the "High Tide of the Confederacy." Mr. Shaara places the reader in the shoes of the major characters of the battle, those whose actions influenced the outcome the most. This report is about one such character, Colonel Joshua Chamberlain. The incident he was a part of happened on the second day of the battle.

On that second day, General Lee sent a major part of his army to attack the troops on the steep sided hill, Little Round Top, on the Union right. For the first time in the war his men were attacking the enemy on "the high ground."

Buy Colonel Joshua Chamberlain term paper

Colonel Joshua Chamberlain and his regiment, the 0th Maine, were placed on the side of Little Round Top that faced south towards the larger hill, Round Top. His men were not even facing the direction that the Confederate attack was expected from. They were facing the narrow gap between the hills.

Colonel Chamberlain was not a professional soldier. He was a "citizen soldier." He had been a professor at a small college in the state of Maine before volunteering to serve his country. He was in the war doing his duty as an American. He was not to know that on this day, he would make history. His actions were to help cause General Lee to abandon his invasion of the north. You have to admire Chamberlain by overcoming his inexperience in war tactics to push back General Lee's army at Little Round Top.

Once in position on Little Round Top, it didn't take long for Colonel Chamberlain to realized that if the Confederates could fight their way through that narrow gap, past his troops, they would be in the rear of the main Union army. It could mean the defeat of the Union army at Gettysburg.

After the assault on the west face of Little Round Top began by the Confederate army, it didn't take long for the 0th Maine to come under attack by the 15th Alabama. They came pouring into that gap between the hills.

The 0th Maine was not at full strength that day. They started the war with about 00 men. On this day at Gettysburg they numbered about 00. Chamberlain had been through the hell of battle at Fredricksburg the previous December. He had spent the night of that battle with his face in the mud after being pounded by Robert E. Lee when his regiment attacked the Confederate positions which were uphill and fortified.

He only thought he had been through hell at Fredricksburg. He was wrong. Gettysburg was to be the real test. It would be his chance to "make a difference" in a big way. His action on that day possibly saved the Union. A defeat by the Union army could have changed history as we know it.

Chamberlain was surprised to find that the 0th Maine was in a position at the bottom of Little Round Top. His men were the only thing keeping the 15th Alabama from getting through the pass and attacking the main Union army in the rear. For an amateur soldier, Chamberlain knew the importance of his position and what would happen if he let the Confederate army by him. He knew he could not give way and many of his men would be killed.

Chamberlain and his men were only about 100 feet from the bottom of the hill, maybe less. When the 15th Alabama came pouring through that gap they were within easy pistol shot of the enemy. The rebel soldiers couldn't ignore the rifle fire from so close to their left. They turned and attacked the 0th Maine.

The 0th Maine fought hard. Wave after wave of Confederate soldiers attacked and were driven back down the hill and back through the gap. Chamberlain knew that he was running out of ammunition and he was gradually running out of men. He sent for reinforcements and ammunition and was told that every other regiment were fighting for their lives also, and that there was no more ammunition to be had, on time. Even so, Chamberlain held on. His personal reassurance held his men together. Even this could last only so long. Eventually, their ammunition was used up.

Chamberlain's men looked to him in desperation. Surely they would retreat. They could hold no longer. Chamberlain knew that he could not retreat. His men were the only thing keeping the enemy from breaking into the Union army's rear.

Knowing that he couldn't stand and fight without ammunition, in a bold and courageous move, he ordered his men to fix bayonets. The men of the 0th Maine were expecting to flee, not to fight, but they did have confidence in their Colonel.

When the 15th Alabama attacked next, they were surprised when the 0th Maine came storming down the short distance to the bottom of the hill with their bayonets and yelling at the top of their lungs. The Confederates, exhausted themselves, and having been without water since the battle began, turned and ran away or threw down their rifles and surrendered.

This courageous, desperate act of Chamberlain kept the Confederate army from getting reacting the rear of the Union army. His actions was not the only reason Lee lost the battle, but it was one of the main reasons. Today a bronze monument marks the area indicating where Joshua Chamberlain and his men made their historical stand at a point that was almost at the bottom of Little Round Top.

Mr. Shaara's book reads like fiction, exciting fiction. The truth is, he made history come alive for those who are fortunate to read the story. For some of us lucky few, we can even say we were there, even if it was 1 years later.

WRIST FULL OF DATA

Microsoft and Fossil Inc. have been working for a long time to create something small that can show lots of information. They came up to an idea to create a wristwatch that will show lots of information and still the size of it to be as same as the other normal wristwatches. These watches will be using Microsoft's Smart Personal Object Technology, or SPOT, a scheme that was introduced by Bill Gates at the annual Comdex computer trade show. These watches will allow people to choose the type of information they are interested in such as news, sports, weather, stock quotes. The information will be retrieved from MSN Direct, a specialized version of Microsoft's online service using local FM radio stations.

The operating system that these watches will be using is the Palm OS Software 4.1. The computer processor is Motorola Drangonballvz Mhz with memory of MB RAM, MB flash. Display 16 level grayscale with backlight, 160 x 160 pixels. Some already build-in applications are address book, date book, To Do list, memo pad, note pad, calculator, and time. The watch comes also with an infrared port (IRDA) so it will allow communicating with all Palm OS devices. The battery life is approximately 4 days, in average use of 0 minutes per day.

This is very handy device for people who like to travel and especially for businessmen. People who travel from one time zone to another don't need to any adjustments on these watches. The watch adjusts to the correct time by it self. It is also handy for people who travel in a plane and they want to know what is the weather like at the place where they are going, they can use this watch to check that out. It is also good for people who like sport events. These watches can keep you up to date with all the scores and all the news.

Buy custom A Wrist Full of Time term paper

These watches are really useful in some situations, but they also have some things that I personally don't like about them. First, their prize. They run somewhere from $150 to $00 dollars. For this amount of money, I can buy handheld computer which is way better than the watch. Another thing is that if person wants to get updated information all the time he needs to pay $10 dollars a month. The time required for transferring data to your watch is too long because the watch uses a FM frequency. The information you can get on your watch are very limited because this watch can accept certain type of information. So personally, I rather buy some handheld computer than buying this watch. But, people who have lots of money and they don't care where and how they spend their money they can add this piece of advanced technology in their collection.

For the past decades, interactive video games have emerged as one of the most popular forms of entertainment among the youth of today. They are now an integral part of the educational, social and cultural experience of childhood. Also, children are now spending a huge amount of time and money entertaining themselves with video games the majority of which contain a lot of violence based on the study conducted by J.B. Funk in the 10s. They may be the blatant fighting games, such as the well-known Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, or King of Fighters. They could also be the 4-CD long strategy and role playing games (RPGs) like Final Fantasy, Rainbow Six, Baldur's Gate, and Star Craft, but they all boil down to one goal the annihilation of an opponent. Despite the significant increase of production and usage of violent video games that are even marked with age restrictions, children are all the more encouraged to play and purchase them. To some extent, they may be a good source of recreation and release for stress and anxiety from school, home or work. However, beyond the knowledge of perhaps most people are the aggressive and domineering behavior, especially in young boys and adolescents, which result from excessive exposure to these violent video games. Parents have raised their concern time and again, because of the surprising mean, disrespectful, and sometimes uncivilized manner that their children conduct themselves after playing their favorite video games. It is important though to look into the most common reasons why despite the complaints, violent video games have remained very popular among the youth.

The main reasons why a lot of people, children most especially, enjoy playing violent video games have to do with the interrelated societal and mental problems they are currently undergoing. A more specific reason is what Sigmund Freud defined as Displacement, wherein children would divert their attention from their problems elsewhere so as to cope with the not-too-good things happening to them. The stress, pressure, and anxiety in their lives make them seek out a sanctuary, a release. Some find it in music. Others find it in sports. Some find them in parties, while others find them in violent video games. They believe that playing these games would actually bring some level of comfort or peace to their lives. By letting out their pent-up emotions, anger, and frustrations towards relationships, school, work, and the like, they decide to use violent video games to avoid aggressive behavior. Instead of punching someone in the nose for fowling up during a group presentation, they would rather bring it to the screen. After they have beaten someone up in a game and even won, then they would feel that anger, or frustration they felt earlier dwindle into oblivion.

Another reason for the reigning popularity of violent games is a child's longing for a model. During the formative years of a child, their means of learning is primarily through imitation. It is only later on in life that they develop a sense of morality and ethics that helps them decide how to behave. However during the earlier stages of life, they follow what they are able to observe from a person of authority. If a child had a problem with his siblings and parents, for instance, this would immediately take away a great part of his learning and growth as a person, because of the lack of a model he would be able to imitate and who would be able to guide him. As a result, this makes the child search for a different source of learning. Some children are able to find their own models, "heroes" in video games, just as how the respondents of J.B. Funk's study called them. Just by playing and controlling their "heroes" in the game, they are able to witness how they behave and naturally being their primary source of learning at that time, they would imitate what they would do. This develops both their motor, cognitive, and speech skills all at once. It is not surprising why a lot of children we see going around can say "Haduken!" and match it with the appropriate movements their "heroes" make.

These are just two of the reasons why children still play violent video games despite the complaints of parents and the seeming fear that it only influences and encourages a child to become very aggressive and domineering. Both showcases the child's endeavor to directly cope with his problems and at the same time, to indirectly push him onwards to self-actualization as social psychologist Abraham Maslow defines it. In this light, video games have the ability to influence the formation of the identity of an individual, making him strong to handle whatever experiences, good or bad, that come his way; and enabling him to learn and explore by imitation and observation. Given this, there seems to be no harm in playing with violent video games. In the first place, violence is not something you can hide from a growing child. Sooner or later he will find that out for himself. There is always the news and the petty crimes that go around in schools too. The only danger is the excessive exposure to violent video games, and there is no one to guide him. Getting too absorbed in a fantasy world, as was mentioned earlier, can serve as enough breathing space to a certain extent, but going overboard can destroy lives. It is just a matter of striking the balance.

MODERN MOVEMENTS IN SCULPTURE

REALISM an attempt to describe human behaviour and surroundings or to represent figures and objects exactly as they act or appear in life. Realism is concerned directly with what is absorbed by the senses. It emerged in the mid-1th century France. Realist artists represented the subject matter of everyday life in a realistic mode.

CUBISM a movement in 0th century art, especially in painting, that was primarily concerned not

with life-like representation but with the depiction of subject-matter by breaking its form down to basic geometric shapes; by overlapping or interlocking these shapes. Cubist painters also attempted to depict objects from many angles not simultaneously visible in reality but arranged so as to form a unified composition. Because it fundamentally overturned the way in which subject matter had been depicted since the Renaissance, Cubism had profound and far-reaching effects on the development of art in the 0th century. Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso developed cubism. There are two types of Cubism; Analytical Cubism (which dates from about 110) and Synthetic Cubism (developed in about 11). In Analytical Cubism the artist took an analytic approach to subject matter, determining and painting the basic geometric shapes of which an object is composed. In Synthetic Cubism the artist created abstract compositions by juxtaposition of geometric shapes.

FUTURISM Early 0th century movement in art that pointedly rejected all traditions and attempted instead to glorify contemporary life, mainly by emphasizing its two dominant themes, the machine and motion. The principles of Futurism were laid down by the Italian poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and published by him in a manifesto in 10. This movement involved a militant group of Italian poets, painters and sculptors. These artists published many manifestoes declaring revolution in art against all traditional tastes, values, styles and championing the modern age of steel, speed, the cleansing virtues or violence and war.

SURREALISM movement in literature and the fine arts, founded by the French poet and critic Andre Breton. Breton published his Surrealist Manifesto in Paris in 14 and consistently dominated the movement. Surrealism grew directly out of Dada, an art and literary movement reflecting nihilistic protest against all aspects of western culture. Like Dadaism, Surrealism emphasized the role of the unconscious in creative activity, but it employed the psychic unconscious in a more orderly serious manner. Surrealism incorporated the improvisational nature of its predecessor into its exploration of the ways to express in art the world of dreams.

KINETIC form of art, usually sculpture, in which movement is an integral part. The agent of that movement may be a current of air, water, clockwork or motorized mechanism, magnetic forces, or the actions of the spectator. Kinetic art is closely related to Op art in its concern with the perception of motion by visual stimulus. Kinetic art emerged in the second decade of the 0th century. The most prominent of its pioneers were Naum Gabo, Marcel Duchamp, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, and Alexander Calder.

ABSTRACTION Abstraction in sculpture developed in the work of Constantin Brancusi, who reduced form to an ultimate degree so that the intrinsic beauty of materials and smooth shapes should become the essence of the work of art. In painting ad sculpture, emphasizing a derived, essential character that has only a stylized or symbolic visual reference to objects in nature.

POST MODERN Post Modern in sculpture means that nothing is new. The sculptures can either be recontextualised ( re-use materials to create a new work) or appropriated ( take an existing artwork and change it) or through the use of parody ( to make fun of).

HENRY MOORE

(188- 186)

British sculptor, draughtsman, and printmaker. Known principally for his large, semi-abstract sculptures of the Human Figure. He is considered as the most prominent British Sculptor of the 0th century, and his work had a strong influence on contemporary figural sculpture.

Moore was born in Castleford, Yorkshire on July 0, 188. He served briefly in the army and from 11- 11, he studied at the Leeds School of Art; from11-15 he attended the Royal Collage of Art in London. During these years, Moore took an interest in the sculptural traditions of Africa, Oceania and Pre- Columbian America as well as in the Paleolithic, Sumerian, Egyptian and Ancient Greek sculpture that he saw in the British Museum. Many of Moore's works during the 10's were highly abstract, consisting of simplified, rounded pieces carved from wood, with numerous indentations and holes often spanned with veils of thin metal wires, the most important and lasting influence on Moore's work was the world of nature. "The human figure," he later wrote, "is what interests me most deeply, but I have found principles of form and rhythm from the study of natural objects, such as pebbles, rocks, bones, trees, plants." In 1, Moore joined Unit One, a newly formed group of avant-garde sculptors, architects and painters, and in 140 was appointed Official War Artist. After his studio was bombed in 140, Moore moved to Perry Green, Much Hadham, a village in Hertfordshire. Six years later, his daughter Mary, and themes of the mother and child and family groups came into his work.

In the final years of his life, Moore devoted himself to drawing and printmaking. He died at Much Hadham on August 1, 186.

Biography of George Washington Carver

What can you really say about George Washington Carver? Well the most important thing about Carver is that he came up with 00 different uses for the peanut as well as changing the means of agriculture. Carver lead an unusual life for a black slave, but he over came his background with hard work and determination.

George Washing Carver was born into slavery like any other black American in the late 1800s. There is no exact date for his birth because he was a slave, however there is an assumption he was born during the year of 1864. His father was killed in an accident shortly after his birth. Within that same year or so hi mother was abducted by the midnight raiders. So after the loss of his parents, it was their owners that took in George. Their names were Moses and Susan Carver. At a young age George was interested in learning and fascinated by plants. The Carver's were the ones to first teach George the basics of reading and writing. However when George turned eleven years old he went off to a black school in Neosho, Missouri. While he was in Neosho, George ended up doing household chores for a black family in exchange for food and a place to stay.

Throughout all these changes in George's live one thing remained constant and that was his passion about plants and agriculture. George worked his way through high school and eventually went on to college. The first college that he attended was Simpson's College in Iowa, where he made the study of plants his main focus of study. In 181 he transferred over to Iowa State University. It was at Iowa State that he obtained his Bachelor of Science in botany. He continued to go to Iowa State to get his Masters in botany as well. While he was working on his masters degree, Carver also taught some botany classes and did experiment on plants. These experiments helped him in later years while he was working at Tuskegee. While he was working at Tuskegee he helped to change their agriculture department. When he first arrived the department was just a barn with some cows and chickens. He later changed that into a laboratory and even got the name of the department changed to agricultural sciences. It was there in Tuskegee that Carver came up with his 00 different uses for peanuts and soy beans.

In addition to changing the agricultural departments, Carver also helped to change farming during the early 100s. The main crop that was growing and selling at the time was cotton. So Carver went on to explore the nutritional value of the peanut. Carver began to focus most of his attention toward soil conservation and how to improve crop production. In 114,Carver began focusing his research on peanuts. In 11 Carver received national attention for lecturing about the many uses of peanuts to a committee of Congress. He later gave lectures throughout much of the country in an effort to promote peanuts. Carver also helped to solve the problem of malnutrition among black farmers. He showed the farmers how peanuts were a good source of protein and can be very valuable to their diets. Along with how to improve their diet, Carver showed the women how to prepare and preserver a well balanced meal for their families.

George Washington Carver did not do just one thing in the name of science, he came up with many useful ideas/inventions. Along with coming up with 00 different uses for the peanut, he also found 100 different usages for pecans and sweet potatoes. In addition to his discoveries with peanuts, sweet potatoes, pecans and soy beans, George Washington Carver developed many other things. Some of the tings he has come up with are process for manufacturing paper, ink, shaving cream, linoleum, synthetic rubber, plastics, bleach and metal polish. He was a very modist man, he had come up with over 500 inventions but he only patented three of them. Most of his inventions were agricultural but he felt there was no need to patent them all. Out of all the money Carver had earned of his lifetime, he never kept much of it. Most of his money he made went to a fund in his name to encourage research in agriculture. In 14 George Washington Carver died unmarried but successful.

I chose to write this biography about George Washington Craver because I found his work to be very interesting. I thought it was amazing that he overcame his background to become what he is. I found his life to be very interesting and can be very inspirations to African American students. Craver started his live out as a slave, but through hard work and determination he became a famous in the way agricultural has changed. He is a good example of how to follow your dreams and interests. I also found him breaking out of the normal stereotype of black people being very inspirational.

She Walks in Beauty

George Gordon Noel Byrons poem titled, She Walks in Beauty, plainly put, is a love poem about a beautiful woman and all of her features. The poem follows a basic iambic tetrameter with an unaccented syllable followed by an accented syllable that allows for a rhythm to be set by the reader and can be clearly seen when one looks at a line

She walks / in beau / ty like / the night.

T.S. Eliot, an American poet criticizes Byrons work by stating the poem, needs to be read very rapidly because if one slows down the poetry vanishes and the rhyme is forced (Eliot 4). With this rhythm the reader can, however, look deeper into the contents of Byrons poem and discover a battle of two forces. The two forces involved in Byrons poem are the darkness and light- at work in the womans beauty, and also the two areas of her beauty-the internal and the external. The poem appears to be about a lover, but in fact was written about Byrons cousin, Anne Wilmot, whom he met at a party in a mourning dress of spangled black (Leung 1). This fact, the black dress that was brightened with spangles, helps the reader to understand the origin of the poem. Byron portrays this, the mixing of the darkness and the light, not by describing the dress or the womans actions, but by describing her physical beauty as well as her interior strengths. In the beginning of the poem, the reader is given the image of darkness She walks in beauty, like the night, but then the line continues explaining that the night is cloudless and the stars are bright. So immediately the poem brings together its two opposing forces that are at work, darkness and light.

In lines three and four Byron emphasizes that the unique feature of the woman is her ability to contain opposites within her; the nest of dark and bright/meet in her. The joining together of the darkness and the light can be seen in her aspect, or appearance, but also in her eyes. In this case, the womans eyes arent to be associated with a physical feature, but more as an internal aspect of her the eyes reveal her heart(Martin 4). L.C. Martin, from the University of Nottingham, also writes that Byron, emphasizes the unique feature of this woman to contain opposites within her,(4) therefore agreeing with the concept that not only is there a struggle between the darkness and the light, but also within the woman.

Beginning with line five, the word meet is emphasized again as she creates a tender light, not the gaudiness of daytime, but a gentler light that even heaven does not bestow an the day. The night can be thought of in terms of irrationality and the day in terms or reason and neither day nor night is pleasing, only the meeting of the two extremes in this woman.

In the second stanza, once again, the opposites are combined. Shade or darkness is combined with day or light, and raven tress or dark hair is linked with a lightened face. If the woman contained with in her and in her appearance either a little bit more of darkness or a little bit more of light, she would be half impaired. A key word in this section is grace. Although Byron continuously talks about appearances, in actuality he is referring to the nameless grace that is in her hair and face. Once again, it is something internal as well as external that is so attractive about this woman.

Although this poem begins with the image of a woman walking, there are no images given by Byron of her legs or arms or feet; this is a head poem, confined to hair, eyes, face, cheeks, and brows. The conclusion to the second stanza contains insight into the dwelling place of the womans thoughts, creating an insight into her mind by using alliteration. The repetition of the s sounds is soothing in the phrase serenely sweet express, because Byron is referring to her thoughts, and her thoughts are serene and pure(5).

In the third and final stanza, Byron concludes the poem with three lines a physical description that lead to the final three lines the womans moral characterization. The soft cheeks, the winning smile, the tints in the skin eloquently express not only physical beauty, but they also attest to her morality. The physical beauty, the speaker can conclude, reflects days spent doing well, a mind at peace, and a heart whose love is innocent!

Byron convinces the reader that this woman is perfect. If any one aspect of her were to be different, she would be half-impaired. Byron uses many antonyms to describe this woman but still portrays a perfect balance within her, often using opposites like darkness and light to create this balance. As L.C. Martin states, Whether Byron would have preferred a less innocent cousin, someone with whom he could enjoy Byronic passions, is left unspoken for the reader to decipher(5). Without the two forces and the struggle within this woman, Byrons poem would have been a plain love poem, but because the forces are so pronounced by his use of colorful language, rhythm, and use of human characteristics, She Walks in Beauty is world renowned for its powerful description. Not only does it describe a womans physical beauty, but also her interior strengths.
