How can you find out a meaning of something if it isn't directly told to you? Symbols are what can do this. Many symbols support themes throughout The Bean Trees, by Barbara Kingsolver. The cycle of life is an important theme and symbols such as Newt Hardbine, Mothering, Turtle and Ismene, and the bean trees all support this theme.

Newt Hardbine is a symbol for the cycle of life. He was like Taylor's other half in the story, "If you were to look at the two of us, myself [Taylor] and Newt side by side in the sixth grade, you could have pegged us for brother and sister." () In grade school many people would confuse them of being in the same family since they both were poor and appeared to be going no where in life. But in the beginning on the book, Newt got in an accident with his father and he had to be rushed to the emergency room where Taylor witnessed his death. Although this fatal accident wasn't good, in some ways was. It was Taylor's clue that she needed to "get away." So she wouldn't end up like Newt, Taylor decided that she had to get out of town to hopefully make something out of life. She changed her name to Taylor from Missy, which was even more of a reason to be able to forget her past. This was a demonstration of the theme, because although one person died, the cycle of life is what led Taylor to move on so she could have a fresh start.

Like Newts death when one thing leaves, another comes in the cycle of life. Taylor decides to leave her mother so she can go out independently into the world. Ironically even though she had just escaped having a mother Taylor finds herself in a mothering situation of her own. A woman came up to Taylor at Earl's burger joint and said to her "take my baby." "It wasn't a baby, exactly. It was probably old enough to walk, though not so big that it couldn't be easily carried. Somewhere between a baby and a person." () She took the baby seeing what poor conditions the child was in and no sooner had she left being a child, that she now was playing the role of a mother. Many girls Taylor went to school with had babies around this time, except Taylor had never wanted to be one of these girls. And now she found herself faced with this situation of having to raise this child that the woman gave to her. In almost one week she went from being a child to a mother. That was another big symbol throughout the novel showing the theme of cycle of life.

Turtle and Ismene are also symbols in the story of the cycle of life. Ismene, Esperanza's child that was killed in Guatemala resembled Turtle, according to Esperanza. She treated Turtle like her own child, and this helped her to move on from the tragedy of Ismene's death. Esperanza had tried to commit suicide by overdosing on baby aspirin. The fact that this aspirin was baby aspirin was a clue that what she was most upset over was her baby. "Something was going on inside of Esperanza. Something was thawing-…This is how it was with Esperanza. Behind her eyes, or deeper, in the arteries around her heart, something was starting to move. She held Turtle on her lap she seemed honestly happy." (77) Ismene's death caused Esperanza to have to leave Guatemala, but it also saved seventeen peoples lives. But now that she was in America, she got to meet Turtle, and they helped each cope through their hard times. Symbolizing another way to show cycle of life, Ismene and Turtle were important symbols of this.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Symbolism paper on The Bean Trees

Rather than just being a symbol, there were objects in the story that symbolized Turtle herself. This object was the bean tree. Turtle had always liked the bean trees when she saw them growing in Mattie's garden, her first word that she said to Taylor even was bean. During February the first frost of the winter came and dried up the trees. But then soon after a miracle in a park that they called Dog-Doo Park occurred with the beans. "You just couldn't imagine where all this life was coming from. It reminded me of that Bible story where somebody or other struck a rock and the water poured out. Only this was better, flowers out of bare dirt. The Miracle of Dog Doo Park." (15) The bean trees that grew out of nothing symbolized Turtle. It shows that even though Turtle had nothing in her life except bareness, when Taylor found her she began to change since she was getting a new chance at life. Taylor was like the bugs that crawled up the vines of this plant, because the bugs helped the beans grow, and Taylor helped Turtle grow out of nothing.

Many symbols were important in this story to show the real meaning of it, and the cycle of life is what they were displaying. Throughout life people go through hard times which they must endure, and this is all part of the cycle of life.

Biographical Information

Claude Oscar Monet was born in Paris on November 14, 1840. The son of a successful tradesman, Monet grew up in the town of Le Havre located on the Normandy coast. He showed artistic talent as a teenager, drawing caricatures of local personalities, and by the age of fifteen he was receiving commission for his work. Monet's formal training began in 185 at the Academie Suisse, a studio that provided models for aspiring artists to draw and paint, but gave little direct instruction. After serving in the French military in Algeria, Monet joined a Parisian studio run by Charles Gabriel Gleyre in 186. Like the Academie Suisse, Gleyre's studio encouraged students to draw from models. In this setting, Monet met several artists who would become friends and fellow Impressionists. Among these were Renoir, Sisley, and Bazille. In 1865 Monet had his first works accepted by the Salon, where they received praise from critics and were purchased by influential buyers. Despite this, Monet still struggled with rejection from the public and the conservative Salon ("Monet," Encarta).

In 1870 Monet married Camille Doncieux, the mother of his illegitimate son. To escape the Franco-Prussian War the couple went to London and then to Holland. They returned in 187 and settled on the Seine River outside of Paris. Monet painted numerous views of this town, as well as several family studies. Frequently joined by Renoir and other friends from his student days, Monet painted every aspect of the outdoors. In 1874 Monet, Manet, Degas, Cezanne, Renoir, Pissarro, and Sisley put together an exhibition which turned out to be a disaster. In an attempt to recover some of his financial losses, Monet made a sale of his paintings at the Hotel Drouot. This too was a complete failure ("Monet," Encarta).

Camille died in 188, and in 188 Monet settled in Giverny where he remained until his death. During these years, the group of Impressionists began to disintegrate. Other influences and groups presented themselves, and gradually each of the painters drifted away to pursue their own styles. In 18 Monet married Alice Hoschede, and at last gained a name for himself. He knew several important people and Monet became financially secure for the first time in his life. With this luxury, Monet devoted himself to gardening, which served as the theme for his last series of paintings. In his final years he was troubled by failing eyesight, but he continued to paint until his death in 16 ("Monet," Encarta).

Changing the History of the Arts/Modern Elements of Impressionism

Impressionist painters were considered radical in their time because they broke many of the rules of picture making set by earlier generations. Impressionism was born out of realism, a movement which had already shocked the critics and public with it's subjects and techniques. The group found many of their themes in life rather than in history, which was the accepted source of subject matter of the time. Instead of painting an ideal of beauty that earlier artists had defined, the impressionists tried to depict what they saw at a given moment, a vision that was hard for some to accept as beautiful. Monet specialized in landscape and informal portraits in natural settings. These were genres that had been regarded as of lesser importance than history painting.

Monet's paintings also broke the traditional rules of composition. Rather than attempting to produce carefully constructed, permanent records of events or scenes, his objective was to capture the moment, a sensation produced by chance. He sought to produce the effects of weather, light, and movement, which often made his subjects appear fragmented with limited depth. This went against the traditional representation of space where the eye is led naturally from the foreground to the distance.

Monet also rejected the dark tones and detailed finish that removed the painterly quality of the artist's work. These were qualities demanded by the Academy of Fine Arts, the institution that set the standards for French painting and organized the Salon (Gerstein). He simplified his compositions, omitting detail to create overall effect. Instead of smoothly blending colors, Monet placed separate touches of vibrant, contrasting colors directly onto the canvas. He allowed the brushstrokes to retain the spontaneity of a sketch. This made his work appear unfinished to many viewers (Spate).

Modern Challenges

Throughout his career, Monet faced many prejudices as a modern artist. As his style developed, he violated one traditional artistic convention after another in the interest of creative expression. Monet's experiments in rendering sunlight and shadow with direct sketchlike application of vibrant color were daring, and he seemed to cut himself off from the possibility of a successful career as a conventional painter supported by the art establishment. In France, art of this period was controlled by three bodies the Salon, the Academie, and the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Typically, these institutions were structured within a very defined set of parameters. Only certain candidates qualified for positions in particular offices. This made the accepted art of the time very restricted and confined to traditional values (Seitz). Impressionism painting arose out of a dissatisfaction with the very subjects and techniques that were approved by the Salon. Classical and sentimental themes, dry, precise methods, and indoor studio work was recognized. Monet's modern ideas kept him from displaying his work, and led the other Impressionists and himself to host their own exhibition. Mocked by critics, they were unsuccessful. This caused him to exist in poverty for more than half of his life. In 1867 after a rejection from the Salon, Monet's first son Jean was born. Without a permanent home or an income, Monet lodged with friends and borrowed what money he could. At times he was even too poor to buy paint or canvas (Seitz). Gerstein, Marc S. Impressionism. Feeling Safe Again? PJ

677 words

In the wake of recent tragedy, millions of people still are hesitant to step on a plane again. Due to the events of September 11th, the airlines in America have upgraded and intensified airport security at least 10-fold. There are Military personnel strolling through the terminals with heavy artillery. So far no acts of terrorism have occurred but some people are still afraid of flying, because of the events that happened over a year and half ago. However, more and more people are flying again because they have an expectation that they will be safe.

Security is the main factor that determines the comfort level of the customer. Before September 11th, if going through customs at an airport, one would most likely find two people working the metal detector. Then after you get past the metal detector, you would find a person that would check your boarding pass. Nowadays, there are military officers walking around making sure that there is order in the airport.

Cheap University Papers on flying comfort

"The airport security is a lot more strict but some of the time it gets ridiculous" Declared senior Tony Quach '0. That statement isn't without concrete evidence. The airport security workers now search every part of the customer's body. Some people who carry Swiss Army knifes are subject to questioning because it can be seen as a weapon. Also people that work for technology companies, who carry a lot of electronics can be seen as terrorists that have the technology to blow up a plane. However, when all this is going on people who have terrorist objectives can slip by because the workers are so focused on the minor details. So the people that work for the airline miss the bigger picture.

There has always been an issue that many people disagree on, that is racial profiling. As of right now, the stereotype of a terrorist is a middle-eastern man that is dressed in a turban. The airport security will search ever orifice of his body to make sure that he is not a terrorist. However if an American man was to posses terrorist objectives, he could pass through quite easily because he does not fit the American view of a terrorist. "Airport security has tightened up quite a bit, however there needs to be a consistent level that all people have to go through." John Seo '0. After September 11th middle-eastern people have been subject to unnecessary search and seizures because of their ethnic background.

According to Victor Nichols (a frequent business flyer) the airport security people have been warned and told to search individuals more intensely if they fit a certain stereotype of a terrorist. "It doesn't seem fair for these people, but America has to be on their guard. Despite the injustice towards these individuals, it is necessary because we as a country are now a target in the eyes of the Middle East.

Now Americans feel a more safe because of all the security precautions.

"Because of all the airport security, my family and I feel it is safe to fly again" Senior Charlie Cook '0 said.

Even with the shortcomings and inconsistencies of the American airport securities, people for the most part feel comfortable flying again. Racial profiling is an unfortunate outcome of this security check, however it will still happen and middle-eastern people will continue to be searched. However, most people in America do not disagree with having middle-eastern people been extensively searched. Racial profiling is unjust but we, as a country cannot deny that a stereotypical shadow has been cast upon all those who look middle-eastern. Is this unjust? For the most part it is, however racial profiling is not without some truth. Afghanistan declared that America was its prime target because it stood against what the Al-qaeda believed in. So since there are people in the United States that believe in what the Al-qaeda is saying, they will pose a threat to the people of this country. However, it is not just Afghanistan that poses a threat, people in this very country can produce the same results.

Frankie's Holy War

Religion is a very powerful belief that can cause destructive wars or be productive positive influences on the lives of the people who attend the church. Other than Islam, there is no other religion more powerful in the Western world than the Catholic Church. It has survived through horribly planned crusades and through its own civil war with Martin Luther's 5 Thesis and Henry VIII creating the Anglican Church, forefather to all the modern Protestant Churches.

Religion molds people's beliefs. It can be more powerful than the family. Religion has pushed people into living bombs, blowing themselves up along with civilians to further their own "religious" cause. In Angela's Ashes the Catholic Church exercises its power over the community of Limerick by excluding Frankie from getting into secondary school solely on the basis of his socio-economic class. The sixth grade teacher was one of the two religious icons in the movie that made any sense at all. He stressed to Frankie the importance of his education and openly and bluntly told him to go to America. The only other religious individual that seemed to have a clue was the priest he talked to after the violent encounter he had with his mother. He relieved Frankie's overburdened soul and told him that he must love himself and God before he could love any of God's creatures. These are truths that all religions have, to be a positive or a negative in an Individuals life.

Have you ever attended a Catholic School? Two words describe it very accurately "not fun". They are rigid, but very effective. You've had to have seen those St. X commercials. That's the truth too, they are the best. At the period of the movie thought the schools seemed to be more like a church function than school. Frankie did seem well educated for a boy in the midst of the great depression and the most destructive war known to man. The teacher I discussed earlier is the kind of teacher all students should dream to have, one that supports the well being of the student over that of themselves. Frankie makes the most money when he used his education in writing the letters for Ms. Finucane, not delivering the letters for the postal service.

The Church isn't all that great either. Like any business it is out for its own survival. It has to make money to pay for its expenses, whether its food for the priests or the electric bill. When tomes are good it often doesn't need to collect from every individual because the more wealthy are willing to give more. The minute times get tough thought the church come banging for their just cause. The church seemed at times to exert a negative effect on Limerick in Angela's Ashes. While people where starving the Bishops and Cardinals all seemed to be ripe and fat. I didn't see any higher-ranking officials die of malnutrition or catch typhoid and tuberculosis. Moreover, when Frankie went to apply to join the church's secondary education program they took one look at him and slammed the door. They based all their knowledge on what he could do by how he looked. The Church also restricted women from working, even if it would be their only way to survive. The gender and ethnic, as well as the obvious social class differences may have made it nearly impossible for many families to survive to see the Fabulous Fifties.

It did have many positive attributes too. Whenever a group of people are in need who are the first groups to show up? The answer is the church. It donates to the homeless and less fortunate constantly. In June when we are out tanning or shopping they are donating time and money. The Church gave Frankie's family furniture when they where in need. They shared the scrapes of food they had left over with the beggars, and it gave them hope. The hope had to be the most important role the church had in the entire movie. It gave Frankie hope even through the most hellish of times. When he was at rock bottom he showed up at the church, and often he received great advice. It also gave the people a way to express their discontents and fears. Every time Frankie feared he went and prayed to Saint Francis.

Like all human beings the members and staffs of Church's are fallible, with the exception of the Pope and the Daly Llama(and this is even disputed). At some points in our lives we give the church too much credit and at other times not enough. We need to realize that it can be a good thing but also it can be destructive. I don't kill in the name of religion. I'm not the one to pass judgment on a group of peoples beliefs, but when it directly causes the loss of my friends and families lives it is my duty to speak out, not act out. Frankie acted out when he slapped his mother and is probably regretting it to this very day. Israel and Palestine need to read this and watch that movie, because we can only have peace when we lay down our arms.

Salem, Massachusetts is a town known for witchcraft trials and mass execution in which nineteen men and women were hung, one man was pressed to death, and the death of more than seventeen individuals wile imprisoned. Historians and scholars through out the centuries have pondered why the mass hysteria occurred during the seventeenth century and why it happened in Massachusetts. To better understand the events of the witch trials, one must examine the economical, religious and social factors of life in the Massachusetts Bay colony.

The events of 16 took place during a difficult and confusing period for Salem Village. At this time, the colony was waiting for a new governor and had no charter to enforce the laws. Salem was divided into two district parts Salem Town and Salem Village. Residents of Salem Village were mostly poor farmers who made their own clothing, raised meat, and made living cultivating crops in the rocky terrain. Salem Town, on the other hand, was a prosperous port town filled with wealthy merchants. For many years, Salem Village tried to gain independence from Salem Town. Many of the farmers, primarily in the western part of the village, believed that the worldliness and affluence of Salem Town threatened Puritan values. In 167, Salem Village was granted the right to have their own minister. Tensions became worse among the already separated Salem, when after two previous attempts to fulfill the minister position; Salem Village elected Reverend Samuel Parris, a Puritan Caribbean sugar farmer who graduated from

Harvard and moved to Boston to become a minister, in 168. Parris denounced the worldly ways ands economic prosperity of Salem Town as an influence of the Devil.

Puritanism refers to the movement of reform, which occurred within the Church of England during the Elizabethan settlement of 155 and ended at the end of the Rump Parliament with the ascension of Charles II to the British throne in 1660. They sought to cleanse the culture of what they regarded as corrupt, sinful practices. They believed that the civil government should strictly enforce public morality by prohibiting vices like drunkenness, gambling, ostentatious dress, swearing, and Sabbath-breaking. American Puritans clearly understood that God's word applied to every aspect of life.

In January of 16 the daughter and niece of Reverend Samuel Parris became ill, as did Tituba. Tituba was a Carib Indian slave from Barbados who lived in the Parris house and played with Rebecca and Abbygail. The young girls would gather to experiment with "magic" and crystal balls to get answers of questions like What trade would their sweetheart be?, Would they have lots of children? After conducting these rituals, the girls began to have constant fits, uncontrollable twitching, cried, made noises, and huddled in corners.

William Griggs, the town doctor, treated the girls for many different illnesses. After many weeks and much deliberation, Griggs concluded the Elizabeth, Abbygail, and

Tituba's behavior lead to one belief, "The evil hand is upon them". The girl's condition became worse. They began to see hazy shadows and claimed the shadows were the

persons responsible for their illness. With all their options elieviated, Reverend Parris asked Tituba to aid in the process of finding the culprit by concocting a "witch's cake". When this method failed, Tituba was arrested for witchcraft herself. After more and more children became victims, the hunting of witches began to get more serious. By the end of 16 Rebecca and Abbygail had announced that Sarah Good as well as Sarah Osborne was the responsible parties for their sickness. Reverend Parris's Carib Indian slave, Tituba, was arrested on March 1, 16 and plead guilty to the charges of being a witch, while Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne tried to place blame on other individuals. Local Salem officials examined the three women before being sent off to Boston jails, to await trial.

Many believed that only undesirable women and poor people could be witches. This was not true in Sarah Osborne's case. Sarah married Robert Prince, a Salem Villager who purchased a 150-acre farm next to Captain John Putnam's. After Robert incurred a premature death in 1674, Sarah hired an Irish indentured immigrant by the name of Alexander Osborne. After their marriage, Sarah attempted to overtake her childrens part of the inheritance and seize control of the estate, breaking her dead husbands will. Many of the accused witches were perceived as upsetting established "patterns of land tenure and inheritance. By endeavoring to gain full ownership of her late husband's

estate, she disregarded her society's set practices of inheritance and land tenure, challenging the tradition of strong, extended family alliances; thus plunging her into the stereotypical profile.

Disney's animated Pocahontas movie may be thought of by many as one of the most controversial movies. The story, which portrays the life of a young Powhatan girl at the time of the invasion of Europeans, seems to take on its own version of history. Watching the movie without having an inclination to the true legend of Pocahontas, it seems innocent and truthful. However, after researching the true story, it is very obvious and understandable why the Native American communities and some others have been so infuriated by the release of Disney's movie. If looked at from a neutral standpoint and knowing both sides of the controversy, it is clear that there are some definite pros and cons of the movie.

If Disney's softened and beautified version of Pocahontas isn't legitimate, what is the real life story of this world renowned child? The real Pocahontas was actually an eleven or twelve year old girl named Matoaka. Pocahontas was her nickname, which translates to "spoiled one" or "the naughty child." According to the legend, it is true that young Pocahontas saved the European John Smith from being killed by her father, but there is no evidence of them having an intimate relationship as shown by the movie. Nor was the rest of Pocahontas's life so peaceful. At the age of seventeen, she was captured by the English and held prisoner for a year at Jamestown. She was only released after agreeing to marry an Englishman by the name of John Rolfe. Her name was changed to Rebecca Rolfe and she and John had a child together. (Rankokus Indian Reservation) Several years later, on a family trip to England, "Rebecca" became ill with smallpox and died. (Spectrum Biographies Pocahontas)

Taking in consideration the actual legend, many reasons arise for people to be upset, especially for Native Americans. Native Americans of all denominations take great pride in their culture and history. For their history to be told in such an inaccurate fashion is very insulting to them. This movie is exploiting the Indian people, the story they are showing is not true, and it is insulting to me and to my People (Freedom Spirit Rising, Cherokee) For someone who have not been educated on the history of Pocahontas, the story the movie tells could very easily be accepted as being true. This means that there are people in this world who might actually believe that's how the young Indian princess's life was. That is sad and wrong. If Disney wasn't going to accurately portray the history, than a statement should have been made on the film saying so. If Disney made a film about a United States historical event and distorted it in this way, there would be very upset Americans.

Still, not everything about this animated movie is negative; there are some pros that come along with it. Although the movie wasn't one hundred percent accurate on telling the tale, it did manage to grab a wide majority of peoples' attention and direct it towards Native American History. Native American History is a subject that is not normally taught in public schools, so many people; especially young children probably never even heard much about Pocahontas before the movie came out. It's the movie, the toys, and clothing that at least directed the world's attention towards a history of the Native's. Some of the main aspects of the movie are correct also. The leader of the English was in fact racist, believing all Indians should be dead. (Native American Indian Resources) Walt Disney was not being rude or cruel about Indians; he was merely being honest about how they were treated. The setting of the movie, which was Jamestown, is also known to be accurate. (The Real Pocahontas) Pocahontas did in fact save John Smith's life and that is the center of the story and the movie both. The biggest downside of the movie is the fact that it sugar coated the truth and turned it into a fairytale. But isn't that what Disney movies are, children's fairytales? The movie was directed towards an audience of children, the true history of Pocahontas would not have been appropriate for five year olds to watch.

Custom Essays on Pocahontas

Considering both sides, it isn't easy to say whether this Disney movie is "right" or "wrong". There are reason's for Native's to be upset by this movie, especially people from the Powhatan tribe because their background has been exposed in a fashion they don't respect. On the other hand, sometimes we need to step back from all the political aspects and look at the beauty and harmlessness of things, especially this movie. It wasn't created to be highly educational, it was meant to be fun. Some things could have been done differently in the movie to respect the feelings of some of its intended audience, but situations like this cannot be avoided in our day and time. Whether it is movies, novels, magazine articles, or video games, when different ethnicities are involved the merchandise becomes highly controversial, no matter how accurately made. There is no escaping this problem and there is no fair way to say who and what is right or wrong

Space Rock . Eros

Eros is an asteroid but can be called a minor planet. It orbits the sun that sometimes causes it to closely pass as 14,000,000 miles next to Earth. Scientists believe that Eros comes this close to Earth every 1 years. The last time Eros came close to Earth was back in 175. Therefore, the next time it will approach Earth will be in 006. The pathway the asteroid takes can be changed by gravitational pull of other planets. This can change and interfere because of the gravitational pull and how it will approach Earth within the next 15 years.

Eros has been described as having a football or potato shape. The radius is 4. miles, the length about 1 miles, and about 8 miles wide. Its orbit around the sun lasts about 64 days coming as close as 106,000,000 miles and going as far as 165,000,000 miles away from the sun.

Scientists have used Eros as a guide to help determine the Earths average distance to the sun. This was done when Eros was. closest to the Earth.

Custom Essays on Asteroids

Space craft have landed on Venus, Mars, and the Moon but none have ever landed on a moving rock in space. On February 1, 001, Scientists maneuvered NEAR Shoemaker unmanned space craft to a soft landing on the potato - shaped asteroid Eros. NEAR1s mission had already been complete. NEAR stands for Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous. This particular mission was to orbit Eros for one year but scientists did better than what was expected. They guided the craft by using five engine burners that slowed NEAR to four miles an hour so it could land. NEAR sent signals to Earth with 6 photographs taken at the time of the descent. NEAR solved the mysteries about the Asteroid it took pictures of craters, boulders, and dust. NEAR1s camera was on the landing side. The pictures showed few small craters. Some of the larger craters showed they had been filled. Scientists suggested this was caused by shifting dust on Eros1 exterior. The asteroid showed no atmosphere or water. It is important to know what Eros is made up of to help scientists find out about the beginning of our Solar System.

It would also help to know what Eros is made up of in case it should come too close to Earth. Scientists believed an Asteroid struck Earth 65,000,000 years ago and destroyed the Dinosaurs. They need to know what kind of rock Eros is made from if they are going to have to change its orbit or cause it to explode before it hits Earth. Scientists like Andrew Cheng, John Hopkins University believe Eros has a layered makeup and leads him to believe that Eros was part of a larger body or planet. The layers of the Asteroid look vary flat and seem to run end to end. Furthermore, Scientists believe that most Asteroids of the orbits belong to Mars and Jupiter. They also believe that Asteroids are chunks of a planet that are trying to form since 4.6 billion years ago. The Solar System was very young then and the gravitational field of Jupiter interrupted the forming of new planets. Eros is believed to be one of these planetoids that was coming together and later was broken apart as it was struck by other Asteroids.

Eros1 age is believed to be billions of years old because it has taken a long time and has accumulated many craters.

Since there is no weather, no moisture, and no air there is nothing to smooth away the craters. Therefore, most of Eros exterior is covered with craters. The digital camera on NEAR took clear pictures so scientist could see these features. Mark Robinson, North Western University noted an area called the Saddle by NEAR scientist that had no craters. He described this area as smooth and showed it stands for ten percent of the area seen by the camera. The landing of NEAR shoemaker offered scientist a really clear image of the features of the Asteroid named 4 Eros.

Scientists that study meteors and asteroids have determined the heavenly bodies are made of iron, nickel metal, stone, and stone mixture. These space rocks are thought to be parts of very large asteroids that have struck other asteroids. They then wander into orbits around the sun and eventually can strike other planets or moons.

Fortunately for us, asteroids don1t strike the Earth very often. Astronomers guess that there are 100,000 asteroids. About four and one half billion years ago, there were millions of asteroids when the sun was very young. Astronomers have come to the conclusion that todays asteroids are leftovers from the beginning of the Solar System.

Asteroids and other space rocks have hit our planet Earth more than 150 places were changed by these impacts. Scientists know and can tell of three that were caused by pieces of 1 asteroid and or comet as it orbited Earth.

John G. Spray,New Brunswick University studied craters made by asteroids from France to Canada. He studied lists of craters and discovered the third large crater in Manitoba. All three craters were about the same age. This study showed that these craters were in a line almost ,000 miles long. It was believed that the two smallest craters were made by the small falling asteroid.

Gods and Generals was a masterful portrayal of the first three years of the American Civil War. It chronicled the achievements of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and General Robert E. Lee for the South. Another main character was Colonel Joshua Chamberlain from Maine, who was fighting for the Union. Gods and Generals showed the connection between the struggles of the civil war and the freedoms Americans have today. The main purpose of this movie was to show the viewers what the motives behind the American Civil War were and why the common stereotypes of the civil war are wrong. It showed real men and real situations and many modern day people disliked it because of this.

The movie begins by introducing its main characters. Robert E. Lee from Virginia is offered a position as General of the Army by the Union, but he flatly stated that his first love was God and his second love was his state and that he would not take the position. Lee was portrayed as a state's rights patriot and as an inspirational leader of men. The biggest main character was Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, who was called up from being an instructor at the Virginia Military Institute to lead his cadets and fellow Virginians in the war. His deeply religious background was shown throughout the movie by his open prayers and his knowledge of the Bible. This Christian influence was meant to remind the viewers that the men were still human weather they were right or wrong. The third main character was Joshua Chamberlain who represented the Union soldiers as being religious and family based, and later in the movie as wanting to free the African-Americans. These characters were the focal points of the movie, but they would be flat without the support of the lesser characters.

The smaller roles were meant to be fillers and were used to show the absurdity of common misconceptions. They showed that there was many that did not fall on either side of the main conflict. Two major African-American characters were both from the south and both supported its soldiers, despite the continuing presence of slavery. Martha, who was a slave of a family in Fredericksburg, stayed with their house so that it would not be looted during the Union occupation. Another African-American, Jim Lewis, became Jackson's cook and developed a friendship with the General. Together, Lewis and Jackson prayed for Lewis's family and all slaves to be freed. This showed the General was anti-slavery, even when he fought for the South. C. Thomas Howell, a Union soldier and Chamberlain's brother, was shown as a racist and called African-Americans "darkies" and even disagreed with President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. These characters made the movie feel more real and showed views that differed than those seen today a typical for the era and regions. These characters also served to fill out personalities, but nothing made the main characters more real in spirit than the battles.

Gods and Generals followed the many battles that took place during the first three years of the American civil war, and it used them to bring out the full personas of its characters. Lee was described as a "silver haired fox" throughout the major battles of Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. This was true because Lee was a brilliant strategist and led the confederates to many great victories. Jackson, too, was portrayed fully when in battle. His strong religious beliefs allowed him to feel safe on the battlefield and inspired his men to great heights. The Union army, however, at the time possessed no such great minds. The Union's own General Burnside had his troops repeatedly storms Fredericksburg against the well-fortified Confederate soldiers. This action resulted in heavy casualties. Such differences in officers are major causes of early Confederate victories.

Cheap Custom Essays on Gods and Generals

Many people disliked the movie because it shows the South's view of the war. This was the intent of the movie. Gods and Generals was designed to be an eye opener to viewers. Its goal was to enlightened viewers about America's bloodiest war. The movie was meant to be one sided so it could show the full culture and religious background of the South that many people never looked at. I loved this movie because of its boldness and its ability to show the events, keep historical facts, and still maintain the individual's personalities. This movie was never meant to be entertaining, but rather, it was meant to be an informative and inspirational history lesson that served to show that there was a second side to the war.

Gods and Generals was a realistic portrait of the history of the American Civil war. Its characters are in-depth and complete. Its battles were all realistic and true to the nature of war. It also served to put down common misconceptions and stereotypes held about the era. It showed that the men on each side were just as human as anyone today. Gods and Generals was very inspirational and enjoyable to anyone who has a good sense of the American Civil War or the nature of men. GP

Macbeth's Transfiguration

It is human nature for one to go through many changes in his/her life. The way life is supposed to work is, you do wrong, learn from it, and grow stronger because of it. However, one can infer that Macbeth has not gotten the memo. In William Shakespeare's, "Macbeth," the title role is a man who is very much persuaded by the world around him, especially his wife. However, Macbeth goes through many changes during the play that affect him and his decisions. Macbeth is a mindless coward who only becomes tactful when someone tells him to be. This is of course, until the end.

Primarily, Macbeth comes back from fighting in a battle to find Lady Macbeth ecstatic about something. He realizes that the "something" is that he needs to kill Duncan in order to become king of Scotland, and after some very brief persuasion by Lady Macbeth, he finally mutters, "We will speak further" (4868). Macbeth has already realized that he is going to be in hot water. One of the things he cannot resist is his wife, Lady Macbeth, who blatantly wears the pants in the relationship. Secondly, when Macbeth has second thoughts about killing Duncan, Lady Macbeth "consoles" him and speaks these golden words, "Screw your courage to the sticking-place" (5560). Lady Macbeth is one of the most ruthless characters in all of Shakespeare's works and she really shows her colors here. She really needs Macbeth to pull through with this so she can become king. In the end, Macbeth is broken down into a harmless trout finally agreeing, "I am settled, and bend up each corporal agent to this terrible feat. Away, and mock the time with fairest show. False face must hide what the false heart doth know" (557). Basically, Macbeth always loses in a conversation between him and Lady Macbeth and he knows he has really no chance of winning this one. This line epitomizes "suggested independence," because Lady Macbeth has told him to do all this when now he is just reciting what she said.

Later on, after Macbeth has killed Duncan, second thoughts begin to rear their ugly heads, and suspicion arises in the castle. Macbeth returns to his quarters after murdering Duncan and after confessing his feeling of guilt for the crime, Lady Macbeth says, "My hands are of your color, but I shame to wear a heart so white" (706). Lady Macbeth cannot see how Macbeth can be a coward about this kind of issue. She believes that a man has no fear and a man can carry out any deed, just like her. To gain the crown, Macbeth must kill Banquo, so he has murderers kill him; when Macbeth sees Banquo's ghost at a dinner party, he lets loose and screams to the entire crowd, "Blood hath been shed ere now" (10575). Macbeth makes a gargantuan mistake by saying this because not only has he let everyone know he is crazy, but he has clued everybody in that a murder has taken place that he knows about. Banquo's ghost influences Macbeth's guilt, and he cannot take it anymore. After Lady Macbeth succeeds in calming Macbeth down, she assures him that the ghost was all a dream; Macbeth agrees and says, "My strange and self-abuse is the initiate fear that wants hard use" (10714). Once again, Lady Macbeth has pulled the wool over Macbeth's eyes by making him believe that nothing about Banquo's murder is real. Macbeth does not want to believe that the murder or any of this has taken place, so he shrugs it off, knowing on the inside he is right.

Order Custom Macbeth paper

By the end of the play, Macbeth does not need any influence or spark to make him as ruthless and heartless as Lady Macbeth. Upon hearing the prophecies the apparitions had, he finds out that he should beware Macduff; he takes care of this his own way saying, "The castle of Macduff I will surprise. Seize upon Fife; give to the edge of the sword his wife, his babies, and all unfortunate souls that trace him in his line" (14150). Macbeth has only been talking to the witches who do not influence. The apparitions merely showed him visions; Macbeth needed no influence to order the death of Macduff and his family. He is becoming more and more like Lady Macbeth. A changed Macbeth, waiting for Macduff to come and fight him says, "I'll fight till from my bones my flesh be hack'd" (157). Macbeth has changed from the sissy to the iron soldier who is willing to fight to the death. Lady Macbeth has gotten inside his head now and he cannot let her out; his eyes are permanently stained red with bloody rage. Not only does Macbeth become more vengeful and hard, but he also becomes smart and quick remembering after he killed Young Siward, "Thou wast born of woman…I smile at weapons laugh to scorn brandish'd by man that's of a woman born" (1671). Like Lady Macbeth and many of his other influences, he has become smart and is able to use his mind over his enemies. Macbeth knew all along that he was going to defeat Young Siward because of his smarts.

To conclude, Macbeth is influenced by his surroundings and his peers until he needs them no more and can fend for himself. Like most people, when he does not know what to do, he turns to his peers; and when he is through he shrugs them off. Macbeth is the perfect example of changes people should all go through. Just not at the same speed he experiences them.

Betrayal and Its Effect on Others

Lying, not telling the whole truth, deception, and cheating are all a type of betrayal when it is done to another human being. Everyone lies at one time or another and no matter how big or small the lie is, if it is found out it can hurt another individual. I personally feel very strongly about this subject because it has had a great impact on my life. I can strongly relate to the characters in the book, Scandolous Risks. Lies made by another person has changed my life in many ways, including not being able to trust others, not being able to get close to another person, and having a feeling of jealously towards people who do have these bonds.

When I was four years old my father cheated on my mother and they divorced. My mother was hurt terribly by this and even though I was too young to understand what was going on, I caught her crying on many occasions. Now that I am more mature, I have learned the whole story and see the great effect it has had on her and my family. Most of all, I noticed the effect it started having on me. I saw my dad every summer and he seemed to be a great person and I enjoyed spending time with him. Once my mother told me what happened in earlier years, I started to take a different view of my father. I thought to myself, how could he do that to her? I was very niave to the fact that not everyone is perfect and this was his downfall. I did not see him much after I knew what he did to my mother and I.

Currently, I am having a hard time trusting people, especially people that I am close with. I compare every guy that I date to my father and think, if my father seemed perfect and he broke my mothers trust, this guy could easily do the same to me. I know not all guys lie and cheat, but I also know that even the ones that seem loyal and honest do. I do not know how I can ever fully trust anyone and since I hope to marry one day, this scares very much.

I also have a difficult time developing close relationships. Once I notice that a guy is getting serious about a relationship, I tend to back off. I feel that if I allow myself to get close, the issue of trust will eventually come up. In addition, I am terrified that once I do establish a strong relstionship, the guy will leave. This also causes me to lie and pretend to be close to someone even if I am not. I know this is not fair to the guy, but I feel that as long as he thinks I trust him, I wont get hurt.

Since I have never had a good, trusting relationship, I envy those that can. I see my friends parents and wish my parents could be like that. They trust each other to never lie and remain faithful. They also seem very content and have no worries. I also wish I could one day be like that but as long as I allow myself to be effected by this, it never will.

Similarly, while reading the book Scandolous Risks, I noticed how the affair affected the character Venitia. She did not necessarily have a spouse to lie to, but the effect it had on her was quite great. She could not move on with her life after the termination of the relationship with Aysgarth. Not only that, but she might have found someone better in London or possible found love for Eddie. Her decision to stay in this dead end relationship changed her for the worse and kept her from truly seeing what and who was out there. As stated by the definition for objective morality, a person changed wither positively or negatively after making certain decisions. Venitias decision made her less of a human being because she cannot see past the relstionship. She will probably die with it on her mind.

Unlike Venitia, I did not decide to lie, cheat, or deceive anyone. What I decided, was to allow the decision of my father to effect my life. My father, who is similar to Aysgarth in some ways, appeared to be a great person. Many people in my family were shocked to know to truth about him. Like Aysgarth, my father never wanted to hurt a woman, especially me. We have talked about my feelings a few times and he tells me that he never thought it would affect me this way. However, I was greatly hurt by this event. As stated by Aysgarth If I ever wound up destroying a woman, I couldnt live with myself - Ive told you that before, Ive told you that I am afraid of destroying you (). What he did not realize is that he started destroying her the moment he started behaving romantically. The moment he said , my dearest Venitia (155) in a far different tone, he started ruining her life.

It is a shame that by the time Aygarth and my father realized that they had ruined someones life, it was too late to change it. Venitias life continued to fall apart even after the relationship ended. She never found true happiness or love. What worries me, is that I too will never be able to trust or love anyone. My friends talk about marriage as if it is something that is soppose to happen in their lives. However, I look at marriage as a goal, something that I will have to work to obtain.

Case Study

Many artists sought to interpret the world in new ways. The artists from the cubist movement artists try to show all sides of a three-dimensional object on a flat surface or canvas. These artists include Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Juan Gris.

The cubist theory began in France. The theory behind the cubist approach was a painting is a flat surface and should remain that way. There are two different types of cubist paintings, Analytic Cubism and Synthetic Cubism. Analytic Cubism was based on how Cubist artists would separate their subject and then put it back together in different ways. Synthetic Cubism deals with the artist combining many different art elements into one artwork.

Due to the point of having many angles appear at the same time, you probably would not be able to identify the object. Many of the objects are broken down into simple structures like lines and half circles. The confusion, which is due to the complex arrangement of the shapes, is often heightened by the broken line affect.

Colors and textures are also considered in making and arranging a cubist painting. The common cubist painting practice involves using dull, drab colors. Usually bland shades of brown, gray and other boring colors are used. Textures are also a factor in cubist art. One specific technique when producing many different textures in one artwork is a collage.

Unlike most art, cubist art all may not express the emotional side but rather the intellectual side. The main goal of cubist artists is to show through their works the way things actually are. Cubism shows objects as they are, but still with some amount of abstractness within the painting. This is due to the use of color in texture. Many may say Cubism is too intellectual for art.

Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso was probably the most famous artist of the twentieth century. During his artistic career, which lasted more than 75 years, he created thousands of works, not only paintings but also sculptures, prints, and ceramics, using all kinds of materials. He almost single-handedly created modern art. He changed art more profoundly than any other artist of this century.

First famous for his pioneering role in Cubism, Picasso continued to develop his art with a pace and vitality comparable to the accelerated technological and cultural changes of the twentieth century. Each change embodied a radical new idea, and it might be said that Picasso lived several artistic lifetimes.

Picasso was born on October 5, 1881, in Malaga, Spain. Picasso, at the age of 14, completed the one-month qualifying examination of the Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona in one day. From there he went to the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid.

For Picasso the 10s were years of rich artistic exploration and great productivity. Picasso continued to design theater sets and painted in Cubist, Classical and Surreal modes. From 1 to 11, he pioneered wrought iron sculpture with his old friend Julio Gonzalez. In the early 10s, Picasso did a large quantity of graphic illustrations.

During World War II, Picasso lived in Paris, where he turned his energy to the art of ceramics. From 147 to 150, he pursued new methods of lithography.

The l50s saw the beginning of a number of large retrospective exhibits of his works. During this time he began to a paint a series of works conceived as free variations on old master paintings.

In the 160s, he produced a monumental 50-foot sculpture for the Chicago Civic Center. In 170, Picasso donated more than 800 of his works to the Berenguer de Aguilar Palace Museum in Barcelona.

Pablo Picasso died on April 8, 17 in Mougins, France at the age of 1.

Southern Living

Set during the Depression in the depleted farmlands surrounding Augustus, Georgia, Tobacco Road was published in 1 by Erskine Caldwell. Tobacco Road is a dark-humored novel on the account of desperate, dirt-poor Jeeter Lester and his family. It is the story of the Lesters, a family of white sharecroppers so destitute that most of their creditors have given up on them. Debased by poverty to an elemental state of ignorance and selfishness, the Lesters are preoccupied by their hunger, sexual longings, and fear that they will someday descend to a lower rung on the social ladder than the black families who live near them. The main focus of the story is on Jeeter Lester who is the father of the family living on an old piece of land that used to be part of his grandfather's successful tobacco plantation, which was located on Tobacco Road. Tobacco Road, five nondescript lanes of pavement connecting Fort Gordon's Gate Five with Bush Field Airport that once a stretch of hard-packed sand linking Piedmont farmers with a small port on the Savannah River. The Lester family struck a chord in a country wracked by the Depression; they are so poor that they must either beg of steal to get any food. Their complete disregard for others can be shown through numerous events throughout the novel, such as Jeeter carelessly stealing a sack full of turnips from his son-in-law and running off to eat nearly the entire sack before returning to give the remains to his starving family. Unable to find work and unwilling to leave his family's tumbledown sharecropper shack on Tobacco Road for the cotton mill, Jeeter is a brutal, ragged man reduced to depravity and degradation.

Tobacco Road became a best seller and eventually a successful play and movie. In the process, it also entered everyday usage in the language as a reference to the poorest of the poor and as an image of the South during that period. Polite Southern society was aghast and Mr. Caldwell was famous. "I don't think he was trying to exploit stereotypes, he was trying to focus on the plight of the poor and focusing attention on less pleasant aspects of Southern life," said Hugh Ruppersburg, and English professor at the University of Georgia who has compiled anthologies on Georgia writers.

When you think of the South, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Do you think of barbecue and the blues, moonlight and magnolias, Scarlet and Rhett, or do you think of place and familywhere you grew up Sunday afternoons spent with relatives? The defining characteristics of Southern fiction are a sense of place and homehome is a potent word for a Southerner, a deep involvement with family and ritual, a celebration of eccentricity, a strong narrative voice, themes of racial guilt and human endurance, local traditions, a sense of impending loss, a pervasive sense of humor n the face of tragedy, and an inability to leave the past behind. Before the Civil War, ironically existing during the Jacksonian Age of the common man, a genre of writing developed that dealt almost exclusively with poor whites and served as to solidify the stereotypes that have remained until the present day. Southwestern humor can be credited with the origins of white working class as violent, ugly, ridiculously religious and socially backward. Many debates surround the writing of Erskine Caldwell; it is ambiguous as to whether this can be read as a call for social reform or merely cruel grotesques of the poor white class. However, considering his widespread appeal and the fact that he was usually referred to as a realist, we must assume that the audience that read him took his crass portrayals as truthful representations. This sense of melodramatic violence and the revelation of a scandalous anti-society carry an attitude of exposing with intent to shock and stigmatize, not to reform or aid. Caldwell emphasized the animal nature of man with his characters such has Jeeter Lester.

Do my essay on Southern Living CHEAP !

There have always been two versions of the South, both wrongs. On the one hand there is the "Gone with the Wind South" bronze men in white linen suits, demure ladies with lace parasols, white-column mansions framed by magnolias, courtly black butlers named Melvin, and gentlemen who makes their own whiskey. On the other hand there is the "Tobacco Road South" sawmill towns, potbellied sheriffs, hillbilly singer, radio preachers, tin roofed chicken houses, and gentlemen who make their own whiskey. Southerners are good-natured, mostly, and they have put up with an inordinate amount of ridicule and stereotyping. The popular entertainment culture had dined out of the hayseed and the country bumpkin stereotypes. In America, the entertainment axis of Los Angeles and New York see the entire region of the South as "the country." Hence, all Southerners are country bumpkins by definition. Reinforcing this misperception are the news media that often report incidents like the Pearl, Mississippi High School shooting as somehow typical of the South. Added to this are the droll redneck jokes and the popular novel, which present repeatedly this "Tobacco Road" stereotyped image of the South.
