Gods and Generals was a masterful portrayal of the first three years of the American Civil War. It chronicled the achievements of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and General Robert E. Lee for the South. Another main character was Colonel Joshua Chamberlain from Maine, who was fighting for the Union. Gods and Generals showed the connection between the struggles of the civil war and the freedoms Americans have today. The main purpose of this movie was to show the viewers what the motives behind the American Civil War were and why the common stereotypes of the civil war are wrong. It showed real men and real situations and many modern day people disliked it because of this.

The movie begins by introducing its main characters. Robert E. Lee from Virginia is offered a position as General of the Army by the Union, but he flatly stated that his first love was God and his second love was his state and that he would not take the position. Lee was portrayed as a state's rights patriot and as an inspirational leader of men. The biggest main character was Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, who was called up from being an instructor at the Virginia Military Institute to lead his cadets and fellow Virginians in the war. His deeply religious background was shown throughout the movie by his open prayers and his knowledge of the Bible. This Christian influence was meant to remind the viewers that the men were still human weather they were right or wrong. The third main character was Joshua Chamberlain who represented the Union soldiers as being religious and family based, and later in the movie as wanting to free the African-Americans. These characters were the focal points of the movie, but they would be flat without the support of the lesser characters.

The smaller roles were meant to be fillers and were used to show the absurdity of common misconceptions. They showed that there was many that did not fall on either side of the main conflict. Two major African-American characters were both from the south and both supported its soldiers, despite the continuing presence of slavery. Martha, who was a slave of a family in Fredericksburg, stayed with their house so that it would not be looted during the Union occupation. Another African-American, Jim Lewis, became Jackson's cook and developed a friendship with the General. Together, Lewis and Jackson prayed for Lewis's family and all slaves to be freed. This showed the General was anti-slavery, even when he fought for the South. C. Thomas Howell, a Union soldier and Chamberlain's brother, was shown as a racist and called African-Americans "darkies" and even disagreed with President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. These characters made the movie feel more real and showed views that differed than those seen today a typical for the era and regions. These characters also served to fill out personalities, but nothing made the main characters more real in spirit than the battles.

Gods and Generals followed the many battles that took place during the first three years of the American civil war, and it used them to bring out the full personas of its characters. Lee was described as a "silver haired fox" throughout the major battles of Manassas, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. This was true because Lee was a brilliant strategist and led the confederates to many great victories. Jackson, too, was portrayed fully when in battle. His strong religious beliefs allowed him to feel safe on the battlefield and inspired his men to great heights. The Union army, however, at the time possessed no such great minds. The Union's own General Burnside had his troops repeatedly storms Fredericksburg against the well-fortified Confederate soldiers. This action resulted in heavy casualties. Such differences in officers are major causes of early Confederate victories.

Cheap Custom Essays on Gods and Generals

Many people disliked the movie because it shows the South's view of the war. This was the intent of the movie. Gods and Generals was designed to be an eye opener to viewers. Its goal was to enlightened viewers about America's bloodiest war. The movie was meant to be one sided so it could show the full culture and religious background of the South that many people never looked at. I loved this movie because of its boldness and its ability to show the events, keep historical facts, and still maintain the individual's personalities. This movie was never meant to be entertaining, but rather, it was meant to be an informative and inspirational history lesson that served to show that there was a second side to the war.

Gods and Generals was a realistic portrait of the history of the American Civil war. Its characters are in-depth and complete. Its battles were all realistic and true to the nature of war. It also served to put down common misconceptions and stereotypes held about the era. It showed that the men on each side were just as human as anyone today. Gods and Generals was very inspirational and enjoyable to anyone who has a good sense of the American Civil War or the nature of men. GP

Macbeth's Transfiguration

It is human nature for one to go through many changes in his/her life. The way life is supposed to work is, you do wrong, learn from it, and grow stronger because of it. However, one can infer that Macbeth has not gotten the memo. In William Shakespeare's, "Macbeth," the title role is a man who is very much persuaded by the world around him, especially his wife. However, Macbeth goes through many changes during the play that affect him and his decisions. Macbeth is a mindless coward who only becomes tactful when someone tells him to be. This is of course, until the end.

Primarily, Macbeth comes back from fighting in a battle to find Lady Macbeth ecstatic about something. He realizes that the "something" is that he needs to kill Duncan in order to become king of Scotland, and after some very brief persuasion by Lady Macbeth, he finally mutters, "We will speak further" (4868). Macbeth has already realized that he is going to be in hot water. One of the things he cannot resist is his wife, Lady Macbeth, who blatantly wears the pants in the relationship. Secondly, when Macbeth has second thoughts about killing Duncan, Lady Macbeth "consoles" him and speaks these golden words, "Screw your courage to the sticking-place" (5560). Lady Macbeth is one of the most ruthless characters in all of Shakespeare's works and she really shows her colors here. She really needs Macbeth to pull through with this so she can become king. In the end, Macbeth is broken down into a harmless trout finally agreeing, "I am settled, and bend up each corporal agent to this terrible feat. Away, and mock the time with fairest show. False face must hide what the false heart doth know" (557). Basically, Macbeth always loses in a conversation between him and Lady Macbeth and he knows he has really no chance of winning this one. This line epitomizes "suggested independence," because Lady Macbeth has told him to do all this when now he is just reciting what she said.

Later on, after Macbeth has killed Duncan, second thoughts begin to rear their ugly heads, and suspicion arises in the castle. Macbeth returns to his quarters after murdering Duncan and after confessing his feeling of guilt for the crime, Lady Macbeth says, "My hands are of your color, but I shame to wear a heart so white" (706). Lady Macbeth cannot see how Macbeth can be a coward about this kind of issue. She believes that a man has no fear and a man can carry out any deed, just like her. To gain the crown, Macbeth must kill Banquo, so he has murderers kill him; when Macbeth sees Banquo's ghost at a dinner party, he lets loose and screams to the entire crowd, "Blood hath been shed ere now" (10575). Macbeth makes a gargantuan mistake by saying this because not only has he let everyone know he is crazy, but he has clued everybody in that a murder has taken place that he knows about. Banquo's ghost influences Macbeth's guilt, and he cannot take it anymore. After Lady Macbeth succeeds in calming Macbeth down, she assures him that the ghost was all a dream; Macbeth agrees and says, "My strange and self-abuse is the initiate fear that wants hard use" (10714). Once again, Lady Macbeth has pulled the wool over Macbeth's eyes by making him believe that nothing about Banquo's murder is real. Macbeth does not want to believe that the murder or any of this has taken place, so he shrugs it off, knowing on the inside he is right.

Order Custom Macbeth paper

By the end of the play, Macbeth does not need any influence or spark to make him as ruthless and heartless as Lady Macbeth. Upon hearing the prophecies the apparitions had, he finds out that he should beware Macduff; he takes care of this his own way saying, "The castle of Macduff I will surprise. Seize upon Fife; give to the edge of the sword his wife, his babies, and all unfortunate souls that trace him in his line" (14150). Macbeth has only been talking to the witches who do not influence. The apparitions merely showed him visions; Macbeth needed no influence to order the death of Macduff and his family. He is becoming more and more like Lady Macbeth. A changed Macbeth, waiting for Macduff to come and fight him says, "I'll fight till from my bones my flesh be hack'd" (157). Macbeth has changed from the sissy to the iron soldier who is willing to fight to the death. Lady Macbeth has gotten inside his head now and he cannot let her out; his eyes are permanently stained red with bloody rage. Not only does Macbeth become more vengeful and hard, but he also becomes smart and quick remembering after he killed Young Siward, "Thou wast born of woman…I smile at weapons laugh to scorn brandish'd by man that's of a woman born" (1671). Like Lady Macbeth and many of his other influences, he has become smart and is able to use his mind over his enemies. Macbeth knew all along that he was going to defeat Young Siward because of his smarts.

To conclude, Macbeth is influenced by his surroundings and his peers until he needs them no more and can fend for himself. Like most people, when he does not know what to do, he turns to his peers; and when he is through he shrugs them off. Macbeth is the perfect example of changes people should all go through. Just not at the same speed he experiences them.

Betrayal and Its Effect on Others

Lying, not telling the whole truth, deception, and cheating are all a type of betrayal when it is done to another human being. Everyone lies at one time or another and no matter how big or small the lie is, if it is found out it can hurt another individual. I personally feel very strongly about this subject because it has had a great impact on my life. I can strongly relate to the characters in the book, Scandolous Risks. Lies made by another person has changed my life in many ways, including not being able to trust others, not being able to get close to another person, and having a feeling of jealously towards people who do have these bonds.

When I was four years old my father cheated on my mother and they divorced. My mother was hurt terribly by this and even though I was too young to understand what was going on, I caught her crying on many occasions. Now that I am more mature, I have learned the whole story and see the great effect it has had on her and my family. Most of all, I noticed the effect it started having on me. I saw my dad every summer and he seemed to be a great person and I enjoyed spending time with him. Once my mother told me what happened in earlier years, I started to take a different view of my father. I thought to myself, how could he do that to her? I was very niave to the fact that not everyone is perfect and this was his downfall. I did not see him much after I knew what he did to my mother and I.

Currently, I am having a hard time trusting people, especially people that I am close with. I compare every guy that I date to my father and think, if my father seemed perfect and he broke my mothers trust, this guy could easily do the same to me. I know not all guys lie and cheat, but I also know that even the ones that seem loyal and honest do. I do not know how I can ever fully trust anyone and since I hope to marry one day, this scares very much.

I also have a difficult time developing close relationships. Once I notice that a guy is getting serious about a relationship, I tend to back off. I feel that if I allow myself to get close, the issue of trust will eventually come up. In addition, I am terrified that once I do establish a strong relstionship, the guy will leave. This also causes me to lie and pretend to be close to someone even if I am not. I know this is not fair to the guy, but I feel that as long as he thinks I trust him, I wont get hurt.

Since I have never had a good, trusting relationship, I envy those that can. I see my friends parents and wish my parents could be like that. They trust each other to never lie and remain faithful. They also seem very content and have no worries. I also wish I could one day be like that but as long as I allow myself to be effected by this, it never will.

Similarly, while reading the book Scandolous Risks, I noticed how the affair affected the character Venitia. She did not necessarily have a spouse to lie to, but the effect it had on her was quite great. She could not move on with her life after the termination of the relationship with Aysgarth. Not only that, but she might have found someone better in London or possible found love for Eddie. Her decision to stay in this dead end relationship changed her for the worse and kept her from truly seeing what and who was out there. As stated by the definition for objective morality, a person changed wither positively or negatively after making certain decisions. Venitias decision made her less of a human being because she cannot see past the relstionship. She will probably die with it on her mind.

Unlike Venitia, I did not decide to lie, cheat, or deceive anyone. What I decided, was to allow the decision of my father to effect my life. My father, who is similar to Aysgarth in some ways, appeared to be a great person. Many people in my family were shocked to know to truth about him. Like Aysgarth, my father never wanted to hurt a woman, especially me. We have talked about my feelings a few times and he tells me that he never thought it would affect me this way. However, I was greatly hurt by this event. As stated by Aysgarth If I ever wound up destroying a woman, I couldnt live with myself - Ive told you that before, Ive told you that I am afraid of destroying you (). What he did not realize is that he started destroying her the moment he started behaving romantically. The moment he said , my dearest Venitia (155) in a far different tone, he started ruining her life.

It is a shame that by the time Aygarth and my father realized that they had ruined someones life, it was too late to change it. Venitias life continued to fall apart even after the relationship ended. She never found true happiness or love. What worries me, is that I too will never be able to trust or love anyone. My friends talk about marriage as if it is something that is soppose to happen in their lives. However, I look at marriage as a goal, something that I will have to work to obtain.

Case Study

Many artists sought to interpret the world in new ways. The artists from the cubist movement artists try to show all sides of a three-dimensional object on a flat surface or canvas. These artists include Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Juan Gris.

The cubist theory began in France. The theory behind the cubist approach was a painting is a flat surface and should remain that way. There are two different types of cubist paintings, Analytic Cubism and Synthetic Cubism. Analytic Cubism was based on how Cubist artists would separate their subject and then put it back together in different ways. Synthetic Cubism deals with the artist combining many different art elements into one artwork.

Due to the point of having many angles appear at the same time, you probably would not be able to identify the object. Many of the objects are broken down into simple structures like lines and half circles. The confusion, which is due to the complex arrangement of the shapes, is often heightened by the broken line affect.

Colors and textures are also considered in making and arranging a cubist painting. The common cubist painting practice involves using dull, drab colors. Usually bland shades of brown, gray and other boring colors are used. Textures are also a factor in cubist art. One specific technique when producing many different textures in one artwork is a collage.

Unlike most art, cubist art all may not express the emotional side but rather the intellectual side. The main goal of cubist artists is to show through their works the way things actually are. Cubism shows objects as they are, but still with some amount of abstractness within the painting. This is due to the use of color in texture. Many may say Cubism is too intellectual for art.

Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso was probably the most famous artist of the twentieth century. During his artistic career, which lasted more than 75 years, he created thousands of works, not only paintings but also sculptures, prints, and ceramics, using all kinds of materials. He almost single-handedly created modern art. He changed art more profoundly than any other artist of this century.

First famous for his pioneering role in Cubism, Picasso continued to develop his art with a pace and vitality comparable to the accelerated technological and cultural changes of the twentieth century. Each change embodied a radical new idea, and it might be said that Picasso lived several artistic lifetimes.

Picasso was born on October 5, 1881, in Malaga, Spain. Picasso, at the age of 14, completed the one-month qualifying examination of the Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona in one day. From there he went to the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid.

For Picasso the 10s were years of rich artistic exploration and great productivity. Picasso continued to design theater sets and painted in Cubist, Classical and Surreal modes. From 1 to 11, he pioneered wrought iron sculpture with his old friend Julio Gonzalez. In the early 10s, Picasso did a large quantity of graphic illustrations.

During World War II, Picasso lived in Paris, where he turned his energy to the art of ceramics. From 147 to 150, he pursued new methods of lithography.

The l50s saw the beginning of a number of large retrospective exhibits of his works. During this time he began to a paint a series of works conceived as free variations on old master paintings.

In the 160s, he produced a monumental 50-foot sculpture for the Chicago Civic Center. In 170, Picasso donated more than 800 of his works to the Berenguer de Aguilar Palace Museum in Barcelona.

Pablo Picasso died on April 8, 17 in Mougins, France at the age of 1.

Southern Living

Set during the Depression in the depleted farmlands surrounding Augustus, Georgia, Tobacco Road was published in 1 by Erskine Caldwell. Tobacco Road is a dark-humored novel on the account of desperate, dirt-poor Jeeter Lester and his family. It is the story of the Lesters, a family of white sharecroppers so destitute that most of their creditors have given up on them. Debased by poverty to an elemental state of ignorance and selfishness, the Lesters are preoccupied by their hunger, sexual longings, and fear that they will someday descend to a lower rung on the social ladder than the black families who live near them. The main focus of the story is on Jeeter Lester who is the father of the family living on an old piece of land that used to be part of his grandfather's successful tobacco plantation, which was located on Tobacco Road. Tobacco Road, five nondescript lanes of pavement connecting Fort Gordon's Gate Five with Bush Field Airport that once a stretch of hard-packed sand linking Piedmont farmers with a small port on the Savannah River. The Lester family struck a chord in a country wracked by the Depression; they are so poor that they must either beg of steal to get any food. Their complete disregard for others can be shown through numerous events throughout the novel, such as Jeeter carelessly stealing a sack full of turnips from his son-in-law and running off to eat nearly the entire sack before returning to give the remains to his starving family. Unable to find work and unwilling to leave his family's tumbledown sharecropper shack on Tobacco Road for the cotton mill, Jeeter is a brutal, ragged man reduced to depravity and degradation.

Tobacco Road became a best seller and eventually a successful play and movie. In the process, it also entered everyday usage in the language as a reference to the poorest of the poor and as an image of the South during that period. Polite Southern society was aghast and Mr. Caldwell was famous. "I don't think he was trying to exploit stereotypes, he was trying to focus on the plight of the poor and focusing attention on less pleasant aspects of Southern life," said Hugh Ruppersburg, and English professor at the University of Georgia who has compiled anthologies on Georgia writers.

When you think of the South, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Do you think of barbecue and the blues, moonlight and magnolias, Scarlet and Rhett, or do you think of place and familywhere you grew up Sunday afternoons spent with relatives? The defining characteristics of Southern fiction are a sense of place and homehome is a potent word for a Southerner, a deep involvement with family and ritual, a celebration of eccentricity, a strong narrative voice, themes of racial guilt and human endurance, local traditions, a sense of impending loss, a pervasive sense of humor n the face of tragedy, and an inability to leave the past behind. Before the Civil War, ironically existing during the Jacksonian Age of the common man, a genre of writing developed that dealt almost exclusively with poor whites and served as to solidify the stereotypes that have remained until the present day. Southwestern humor can be credited with the origins of white working class as violent, ugly, ridiculously religious and socially backward. Many debates surround the writing of Erskine Caldwell; it is ambiguous as to whether this can be read as a call for social reform or merely cruel grotesques of the poor white class. However, considering his widespread appeal and the fact that he was usually referred to as a realist, we must assume that the audience that read him took his crass portrayals as truthful representations. This sense of melodramatic violence and the revelation of a scandalous anti-society carry an attitude of exposing with intent to shock and stigmatize, not to reform or aid. Caldwell emphasized the animal nature of man with his characters such has Jeeter Lester.

Do my essay on Southern Living CHEAP !

There have always been two versions of the South, both wrongs. On the one hand there is the "Gone with the Wind South" bronze men in white linen suits, demure ladies with lace parasols, white-column mansions framed by magnolias, courtly black butlers named Melvin, and gentlemen who makes their own whiskey. On the other hand there is the "Tobacco Road South" sawmill towns, potbellied sheriffs, hillbilly singer, radio preachers, tin roofed chicken houses, and gentlemen who make their own whiskey. Southerners are good-natured, mostly, and they have put up with an inordinate amount of ridicule and stereotyping. The popular entertainment culture had dined out of the hayseed and the country bumpkin stereotypes. In America, the entertainment axis of Los Angeles and New York see the entire region of the South as "the country." Hence, all Southerners are country bumpkins by definition. Reinforcing this misperception are the news media that often report incidents like the Pearl, Mississippi High School shooting as somehow typical of the South. Added to this are the droll redneck jokes and the popular novel, which present repeatedly this "Tobacco Road" stereotyped image of the South.

Perry's account of the first night of philosophical debate includes many small arguments which all are about the possibility of an afterlife. The conclusion to the one argument, which this paper will focus on, is one that the dying philosopher Weirob asserts. She concludes that we are not in fact judging immaterial souls when we interact with people everyday. Her conclusion is supported by her premises that

1) If identities of persons were really consistent of identities of immaterial souls that are unobservable, and that this is an "a priori" fact, then judgments that we make everyday about friends etc. are really judgments about such souls.

) But if these judgments were really about souls they would be groundless because souls are unobservable.

) But our judgments about persons are not all simply groundless and silly…

Custom writing service can write essays on Summary and Analysis of Perry's "First Night"

4) So we must not be judging of immaterial souls after all.

Miller objects to this argument by first saying that there is after all a way to

Test the hypothesis of a correlation between person and soul. He says that a persons characteristics, attitude, beliefs, memories, etc. are all properties of the soul, and are also correlated with identity of the body. Basically we can observe these traits, but they are properties of an immaterial soul in a body. He says that this is in fact the intermediate link.

Weirob retaliates by first granting him for the sake of argument that belief, character, etc. are states of mind and that a mind is an immaterial thing. Then she says though that the person who is said to be linked to the body of a friend could simply be a similar person. She explains this with the analogy of a familiar river. One judges the river based on the condition of its water, yet the water is never the same water. It is actually different every time because it travels. Couldn't this be the same for a state of mind as is expressed by attitude, character etc. Isn't it possible that by judging based on a temporary thing one could simply be observing similar persons and not the same person every time.

The next objection that Miller proposes is that he can judge that souls reside permanently in this world in one body because (even though it is not observable nor is it "a priori") of his own soul being permanently correlated with his body. He says that even though this is only one case among billions (as Weirob points out) that he can generalize that all cases must be this way because he has no evidence to suggest otherwise.

Weirob counter attacks then that how would you really know that in your own case there is only one soul, which has always inhabited your body? She says that she grants (in order to avoid ridiculousness as Miller says) that one person has always inhabited your body, but that it does not mean that one immaterial soul has been or that you would even know. She explains that to say that the same immaterial soul has in fact been there all ones life would be mysterious, and therefore it should not be said that a soul is the same as one's person. She then outlines the possibilities as examples. One is that a single soul has been with each body since it was born, but at the opposite end of the spectrum another possibility would be that a constant flow of souls that are all similar are flowing through each body. There is no reason to believe either of these options over the other nor over any of the options that Weirob presents. She sees that a person who inhabits a body can always be proven to be the same person, but that a soul which by definition is unobservable cannot be proven to always be in a constant place or have a constant connection. This idea leads one to conclude that as she says, "souls…cannot be used to bridge the gulf between my existence now and my existence in the hereafter." She proves to Miller at least that souls are not a part of personal identity and therefore not essential to "survival" after death.

I believe that Weirob does an excellent job of arguing her position while Miller does not do so well. Because of their differences in education in philosophy though it is understandable how this inequality could come about. What is most important is that Weirob is searching for an afterlife which includes her body and her entire earthly self. She is looking for a heaven that is exactly like her present reality. I have never heard anyone talk of a belief like that before. To say that after we die we end up alive again later on does seem absurd if we are defining alive again to be in the exact same sense as we are now. If Weirob were to open her mind to a possibility of a different afterlife, then perhaps she would see it as a minute hope. Her narrow-mindedness; however, leads her into this hopeless argument with a man much her inferior on the subject. Her argument is sound, I believe, but it would not keep me from believing in the great possibility of a hereafter.

Many years ago, before there were scientists, or science at all; daylight was everlasting, and people did not need sleep. It was never dark and people could stay awake and busy all the time. The world was controlled by a group of people known as the Umpa-Lumpas. The Umpa-Lumpas were a political party that gained control of the world through manipulation; they tricked god into going to another world for a vacation and then took over while he was gone. The Umpa-Lumpas wanted to maintain control of the world, and they knew that the only way to do this was to allow people to make suggestion to them on how to make the world a better place, and then put those suggestions into action. The Umpa-Lumpas worked very hard at this, and became very successful rulers.

The Umpa-Lumpas established a new law. The law stated that every word in every suggestion letter received by the Umpa-Lumpas would be taken literally regardless of its intended meaning. The purpose of this law was to promote peoples writing skills, so that they would think carefully about everything they wrote, it was also an attempt to cut down the number of suggestions received, because people would be afraid of what they might say.

A very respected and well-liked man named Iwant Darkatnight was living in a small town. He was a very successful businessman and always gave charity to everyone he knew, he was a caretaker for his town, and under his protection everyone in his town was very happy and safe. One man living under the protection of Mr. Darkatnight, Mr. Daylight, wanted desperately to reward or repay Mr. Darkatnight somehow, but he was poor and did not have much influence. Mr. Daylight thought for long amounts of time without a break. When he finished thinking, he did not know how to repay Mr. Darkatnight, but he had come up with an idea that he thought would be a good suggestion for the Umpa-Lumpas. His idea was to have breaks in the day, to prevent people from working too much for too much time without a rest. He thought that if there was a small time period every day to relax it would make the world a much better place. Mr. Daylight thought that this was such a good idea that he should share the credit with Mr. Darkatnight, and that would repay him.

Mr. Daylight decided have a letter written to the Umpa-Lumpas with his suggestion. Unfortunately, Mr. Daylight could not write. Mr. Daylight paid his neighbor, Mr. Sleepatnight, to write the letter. But Mr. Sleepatnight was missing a few words from his vocabulary as many people were, but rather than replace them with other words he just skipped over the words he did not know. So the letter came out like this

Cheap University Papers on Myth-Why is it dark at night?

Dear Umpa-Lumpas,

I think that people need breaks in their life to prevent them (from) working to hard without a break. A short, scheduled, break every once in a while could prove to be very helpful. This idea is (from) Daylight and Darkatnight

Also (from),

Sleepatnight

The Umpa-Lumpas read this without the word from, because that is how it was written by Mr. Sleepatnight. The Umpa-Lumpas knew that the from was implied, but in ordinance with their new law, could not insert the "from". The Umpa-Lumpas had to read it how it was written and therefor made two divisions in life, daytime which was light to nighttime which was dark. The Umpa-Lumpas then re-read the letter and realized that the signature that read "Also Sleepatnight" had to be included in the plan. The Umpa-Lumpas made it so that at night people would become tired as it got dark and would need to sleep at night, while it was dark at night. And the rest of the time there would be daylight.

Upon learning of this plan, Mr. Daylight became furious, he wanted just a small break in the day for a breather, never an equal time of work and rest! Mr. Daylight ran to Mr. Darkatnight to tell him the whole story, and apologize for all the confusion he had caused. Mr. Darkatnight was not so upset but decided that something had to be done, because it was not a good idea to have such a long break in the day. Mr. Daylight and Mr. Darkatnight, sat and thought for hours and hours about a compromise that would not force the Umpa-Lumpas to cancel their new ruling but yet prevent such a long break in the day. Finally after a few days with nights between to slow down their thinking, they had a brilliant idea. They decided that if during sleep one could continue to think, it would not be as much of a waste of time. Daylight and Darkatnight did not think it was worth it to write a letter and risk it being misinterpreted, so they went to the Umpa-Lumpas themselves at the Umpa-Lumpa world headquarters to make their suggestion. They suggested that people have fantasies or thoughts during their sleep and they could be called dreams. The Umpa-Lumpas loved this idea, and were very thankful for the entire series of suggestions. To repay Daylight and Darkatnight, the Umpa-Lumpas made the beginging of the daylight, or sunrise, and then beginning of darkatnight, or sunset, the two most beautiful times of the day.

He thinks he is invincible. On August 8, 10 Kuwait officially becomes the 1th province of Iraq. Then finally on January 17, 11 Allied planes begin bombing Iraq. This is the beginning of the gulf war. By February 11 The Persian Gulf War ended by a declaration of cease-fire by US President George Bush. Saddam was left in power which has been shown to be quite the wrong decision. In 16 Iraq Accepted the 'Oil for Food' program, proposed by the UN Security Council. In 00 UN intelligence found proof of Saddam having weapons of mass destruction and in 00 US, Britain, Australia and allies started an invasion of Iraq to bring freedom to Iraqis and to over throw Saddam's regime.

This is a phrase quoted from a young leader…

"Words are very powerful, they can get things done for us, but then a word and a gun makes it much easier.

This is a fundamental belief, the base of all actions of the most powerful man of Middle East, the man who alone is getting to the nerves of the entire Western world Saddam Hussein. He is a man who is sitting over the pile of world's deadliest weapons, a man, who, if opens his reservoir of chemical and nuclear weapons, can literally peel off the layers of skin of enemy troops, can turn his rivals into ashes in microseconds. Procrastination in College Students-Increasing hours of study

After graduating high school, college would be the next big step and milestone in my life. I have always planned on attending college ever since my parents pounded the well-known word into my head. All summer I anticipated for it to come and I could hardly wait! Finally, the exciting first day of college arrived. After stepping my first foot into my first college classroom, I knew that I was playing in a whole new ballgame. I knew at that exact moment, I would really have to study a lot and work very hard to accomplish my short-term goal of receiving a .0 GPA or higher at the end of the semester. After a week or so of college, I started noticing a bad behavior that I had picked up from high school. Procrastination! This is a behavior that has to be changed!

Webster's dictionary defines procrastination as, "to put off intentionally and habitually; delay." According to a recent study by authors Laurel A Haycock and Patricia McCarthy, "Procrastination is presently one of the most common behaviors shown among college students." They go on to say, "Procrastination is a common and, at times, serious problem (Burka &Yuen, 18). Internal consequences may include irritation, regret, despair, and self-blame (Burka & Yuen, 18). External consequences may be costly and can include impaired academic and work progress, lost opportunities, and strained relationships (Burka & Yuen, 18). They then report on researched information on the percentage of college students who procrastinate. "Academic procrastination has been found in as many as 50% of undergraduates at one university report a tendency to procrastinate on assignments (Hill, Chabot, & Barrall, 178; Solomon & Rothblum, 184). Furthermore, procrastination may be a significant negative predictor of college grade point average (Wesley, 14)."

Everyone is created equal, right? It certainly doesn't seem like that at Myrtle

Middle School in New Jersey. Mr. Pilone, an eighth grade teacher, decided that he would experiment by creating single-gender classes. Why would separating the boys from the girls create any new change, and make the school a better place? Single-gender classes just create more tension amongst everyone, and they are not as successful as co-ed classes.

The experiment Mr. Pilone tried proved to raise the girl's scores a bit, but it showed no improvement in the boy's department. In fact, the experiment created more fights amongst the boys, and more tension as well. The boys felt they were in some sort of competition with each other, and took it too far. Is this what we want to happen at other schools?

Order custom research paper on SEPARATE BUT NOT EQUAL

The scores of the girls did go up, and they aren't as distracted as they were before. But the boys didn't get anything good out of this. The experiment also proved that the girls are more open in classroom discussions, but yet again, what about the boys?

Mr. Pilone seems to be a sexist man; this is due to the fact that he sees an improvement in the girls, and not in the boys, yet he still goes along with the experiment. Single-gender classes will make boys and girls feel in competition with each other, for they get their grades separately. This will create more tension amongst them, and there is no need for that in a middle school.

If single-gender classes were really so good, great universities like Harvard, and Princeton would be using them also. But they obviously aren't any good, and they shouldn't be created. Thankfully this is only an experiment, and Mr. Pilone will learn from his mistake. Hopefully people will see the real facts, and leave classes the way they should be, co-ed. Both genders are equal, and that's the way they should be, including in school.

The morally ambiguous character of this story is Jay Gatsby. Throughout the whole book, only he knows the motives of Jay Gatsby. The whole book relies on the use of the ambiguity for suspense and cliffhanging, perhaps to contrast the almost miticulate style of writing the author possesses.

Even when we first meet him, Fitzgerald uses over-dramatic qualities, something not used in the book yet, to emphasize the mystery surrounding him. Even in his own party the cloud is strong. He doesnt dance or drink; yet he puts himself in the company of drunken partygoers. Even though Fitzgerald puts emphasis on the fact that possessions of Gatsby are real, he goes on to put the same emphasis on the fake oxford accent. The reader feels helpless at a point when the characters emotions are beginning to be placed together because Gatsby is still ambiguous.

When the subject of money comes up, Gatsby tends to shy away and exaggerate. The possibility of having someone understand him is so absurd that he would rather lie than face the truth. Jordan further clouds his motives. Her story of Gatsby as a heart-stricken lovebird puts more suspense and tension into the novel. Yet as the reader is trying to sympathize, an event is portrayed about how the marriage was called off. As if things couldnt get any more twisted, Fitzgerald adds clichs to further show the true heart of Gatsby.

Although the ambiguity of Gatsby is this books best quality, Fitzgerald gives us little tastes of reason at a time to keep us reading. We learn that the green light that Gatsby was reaching for in the first chapter is represented by Daisy. It is what he yearns for, yet is out of his reach. Yet when Fitzgerald divulges this to us, he throws us yet again another question. Does Gatsby have ulterior motives in his friendship with Nick? It is clear that he is fond of Nick, but does he use him as an attach for his relationship to Daisy?

Sadly, this is where the ambiguity ends. Once Gatsby and Daisy reunite, the story becomes so predictable, like a soap opera episode. He loves Daisy until the end, his inevitable death.

It can be argued that since the 10s society in America has been in a state of moral decay. Many say that this decay has much to do with materialism and the acceptance of moral decay that began in the 10s. Because of things like organized crime, social corruption and growing materialism there was a sudden drop in society.

Since the 10's there had been a drop in the way society would view things. It was the rise of leisure and it was the time when moral and art constraints weakened. People no longer would look toward political figures as role models. Instead they turned to movie stars and sports figures. Children no longer aspired to go into politics, rather they wanted to become an actor or a famous sports player. This time also brought forth the reemergence of baseball, with such figures like Babe Ruth. This can be related to the same popularity that Sammy Sosa and Mark Maguire brought to baseball a few years back.

During this time people in America also became law breakers. Most people violated the eighteenth amendment without a seconds pause. With the abuse and want of alcohol there was an also an increase in organized crime. Since alcohol was not legal people began to get greedy over it. Alcohol production increased as the want for more also increased. Prostitution also arose during this time and violence was more common in the cities.

more visits to the whorehouses and most of all loneliness. Others like Candy will also suffer a shattered dream. George and Lennie desperately cling to the notion that they are different from other workers who drift from ranch to ranch because, unlike the others, they have a future and each other. But characters like Crooks and Curleys wife serve as reminders that George and Lennie are no different from anyone who wants something of his or her own.

The story implies very much that there is a great friendship between George and Lennie, I believe this is very true, but it is important to analyse the reasons for their unfamiliar friendship in the ranch. For example, George says,

Whatever we aint got, thats what you want. God amighty, if I was alone I could live so easy. I could go get a job an work, an no trouble. No mess at all, and when the end of the month come I could take my fifty bucks and go into town and get w ...

At first, Lennie scorns her advances saying ì [if] George sees me talkin to you, hell give me hellî(87). Curleys wife persists, even letting Lennie stroke her hair. When Lennie pulls to hard on her hair, she beings to scream, scaring Lennie; Lennie believes that if George hears her screaming, George wont let him ìtend the rabbitsî(87), at their dream ranch. In a moment of confusion, Lennie accidentally kills Curleys wife; then, he goes to hide in the brush till [George] comesî(), carrying out Georges instructions to the letter. Sadly, George, Lennies so-called friend, shoots Lennie, when he comes to the brush. Lennies death sharply contrasts Casys death, which inspires Tom to champion the ìOkieî(80) cause. Throughout The Grapes of Wrath, Casys philosophy affects Tom subtle ways. Casys death acts as a catalyst, making Tom realize the truth behind Casys theories. However, both deaths influence the respective

All people seem the same in many ways. They all evolve and forgo changes with experience. Henry contains human like qualities even though being a character in a novel. He lives, laughs, and breathes like anyone else. In the novel The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane, the transition from youth to manhood creates a difference in Henrys courage and perception of war, yet it also obtains similar honesty beliefs.

As Henry works his was onto the battlefield for the first time, his regiment portrays him as nothing but a youth. Henry displays his youth qualities in a sense of lacking courage. His weakness exhibits as Stephen Crane writes, "The second phase has begun. It is too much. The youth throws down his riffle and runs" (14). As the rush of the opponent tests his courage, it is too much for him to handle, as he feels obligated to run showing little courage. Next Henry's perception of war indicates his inexperience. Yet to establish himself on the battlefield, Henry, unaware of the reality of war believes it should create and opportunity for him to inspire and be recognized as a hero. "Don't go a-thinkin' you can lick the hull rebel army at the start . . . I know how you are, Henry." (Crane 5) states Henry's mother before he leaves for action. That statement displays Henrys mentality towards things without being verified of the truth. War appears to Henry as an easy time where he can take charge. Finally a youthful aspect conveys through his honesty. Henry spits out a blatant lie when he cries out, "An' b'jiminey, I got shot-I got shot" (Crane 58). Stephen Crane shows the immaturity of a young boy through his lies. Henry's initial behavior to war provides efficient evidence on why his regiment identifies him as a youth.

Eventually Henry progresses his advised youth into manhood. The upgrade from youth to man creates an unknown level of courage. Stephen Crane displays Henrys courageous when he writes, "Once the line encountered the body of a dead soldier. He lay upon his back staring at the sky. The youth could see that the soles of his shoes had been worn to the thinness of writing paper" (16). Henry shows courage at that time in not being afraid and realizes the death presents itself many times throughout a war. In addition to courage, Henry's perception of war now makes him realize the unimportance of a single soul. "I don't believe many of your mule drives will get back." displays the lieutenant's view of what few soldiers mean to this war (Crane 108). Henry now knows that one man cannot make such a difference in becoming a hero. Equally important, is the effect manhood has on Henry's honesty. Though one reaches manhood, that does not mean that their honesty will now seem different. "What's the matter Henry? Are you ok?" his fellow soldier asks as Henry refuses to answer the truth displays his honesty (Crane 141). After the final battle that day, Henry still thinks about lying about getting shot in the head and running away though he will not tell the truth. Manhood does not just come to one, he must earn it. In many ways Henry has done that.

When Stephen Crane writes the novel The Red Badge of Courage, he shows a difference as Henry goes from youth to manhood in his courage and perception of war, yet he also shows a similarity in his honestly beliefs. As Henry becomes a man his courage elevates to another level rather than when he runs away from a battle as a youth. When Henry enters the war, he believes he can perform well enough so he produces an image of a hero that can be known nationwide, but once his childish thoughts went away he realizes that one man cannot make a difference in a war of that magnitude. Though he shows many differences from youth to manhood, Henry also stays the same in ways. Henrys honesty stays completely the same as he refuses to tell the truth about the wound upon his head and him running away from battle. Henry, in this story, quickly passes through some of the natural process of growing up.

Flawed Beauty

In the story, The Birth-mark, Nathaniel Hawthorne explains how beauty can be found in your flaws, and how it depends on the eye of the beholder. Aylmer, the scientist and husband, is married to a beautiful woman, named Georgiana. Upon Georgiana's cheek is a birthmark with a shape that "bore not a little similarity to the human hand, though of the smallest pigmy size".

Aylmer found the hand to be, "the visible mark of earthly imperfection", while others "would have risked life for the privilege of pressing his lips to the mysterious hand". Knowing this, the reader can realize that each person has a different opinion on beauty. For a peculiar reason, Aylmer couldn't stand looking at the tiny birthmark that "had been so often called a charm"

Even though, the birthmark could be covered "with the tips of two small fingers", Aylmer wanted to rid himself "of this fatal birthmark". Aminadab, the assistant to Aylmer, even said, "If she were my wife, I'd never part with that birthmark." Even though, so many adored the birthmark, and would die to have Georgiana as their wife, Aylmer couldn't look past it. Beauty was right in front of his face, but his crazy obsession blinded him of the true beauty he had before him.

Write my Essay on Flawed Beauty for me

Aylmer kept referring to the birthmark as "a symbol of imperfection". So many people still considered Georgiana to be perfect because they had realized her flaws made her flawless. Aylmer's love for science along with his idea of perfect perfection made him sightless to her beauty. Thus, Aylmer had rejected "the best the earth could offer".

Each person has a different perspective on what beauty is. Even though some had thought the birthmark "quite destroyed the effect of Georgiana's beauty", she was still beautiful. Aylmer had a beautiful woman who loved him, and he knew it. He too had thought she was beautiful, but he saw her "otherwise so perfect" that he thought the birthmark ruined her, when actually it completed her perfection
