Culture The Native Americans and the Europeans of the Renaissance

The Native Americans were in many ways similar to the Europeans of the Renaissance time. They both had new and inventive ideas that would spread all over the world. They were constantly changing to suit their needs and to adapt to their surroundings. They were faced with new challenges and new worlds to find. But they were also different. They had different ideas about the world and different innovations. They lived in different areas and had different social classes of order. Their challenges were much different and had different complexity. One of the most significant of similarities and differences was their culture.

Order Custom Essay on Culture: The Native Americans and the Europeans of the Renaissance

One of the biggest factors in Native American culture was trade (pg 10 The Americans). Many tribes became known to their neighbors for a specific product of skill (pg 10 The Americans). These neighbors traded with other neighbors to make trade long distance. Sometimes people bartered for basic goods, but mostly people traded for rare and exotic items such as medicinal plants, copper, pigments, and even grease (pg 10-11 The Americans).

Land was also a major part of Native American culture. Land was looked upon as a sacred source of life and not a commodity to be sold or traded (pg 11 The Americans). The Native American views of land disagreed with those of the Europeans and caused many clashes (pg 11 The Americans).

Religion was another part of Native American culture. They believed the world was filled with spiritual presences that were living and nonliving (pg 1 The Americans). They also thought that the past stayed alive to guide the present and that a supreme being existed that gave them customs (pg 1 The Americans).

Family was also another important part of Native American culture. A family consisted of aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives (pg 1 The Americans). Some families were divided into groups with a common ancestor called clans (pg 1 The Americans). All families act in community decision making (pg 1 The Americans).

One of the biggest factors in European culture was religion. Christianity was the religion of the Europeans. The pope had great political and spiritual authority (pg 1 The Americans). The Crusades to over the Holy Land later caused a Reformation period that decreased the power of the pope and divided Christianity into Catholicism and Protestantism (pg The Americans).

Another important factor in European culture was trade. An interest in overseas trade was sparked by Marco Polo's journey to China (pg 5 The Americans). Trade through sea made voyages easier than land routes because of thieves and taxes from local rulers (pg 5 The Americans). Cartography and compasses were used to plot different routes to Asia (pg 5 The Americans).

Another part of European culture was printing. Johannes Gutenberg invented the moveable type printing press in the 1450s (pg 5 The Americans). It allowed books to be printed easier and cheaper, which increased production speed (pg 5 The Americans). This invention allowed mass production of books such as the bible to be made.

Furthermore, the Native Americans and the Europeans shared similar cultural styles. They both traded with other people to gain basic goods and more exotic items. They believed in one Supreme Being that they worshiped. The two also had different cultural styles. The Native Americans believed the land should not be sold, but the Europeans did. The Native Americans traded by land and local water areas, but the Europeans traded by land and sea routes. The Europeans developed printable type and the Native Americans didn't.

Abstract

A lot of research has been done on Organizational Behavior and there are

many definitions to which to choose. This paper will define my personal

operational definition of Organizational Behavior based on the research

performed. How this applies to my organization, why OB is important, and

what the power of the knowledge of OB is also discussed.

There are many definitions of Organizational Behavior (OB). In

order to develop a personal operating definition of OB, I read several

definitions to help form a framework of what OB means to me. The

definitions I read ranged from the very complex to the very simple. Along

with many OB definitions, there are also many different types of research.

Mole noted four assumptions that are used in all OB research (00).

1. Behavior is predictable

. Behavior is caused

. Behavior has many causes

4. Generalities can be made

Personal Operational Definition

With the above assumptions, as well as the concept that OB is a combination

of different fields of behavioral sciences, I developed the following

operational definition of OB. The study of Organizational Behavior is to

observe, analyze and learn, what variables influence individual behavior, at

both the individual and group levels, and understand how it affects the

behavior of the organization.

I will use this operating definition in my organization as we plan to make a

major software change. The process is underway to replace the maintenance

software system with an updated software so that a purchasing package can be

procured that will integrate the two. By observing the behavior of the

employees, I will be able to better understand the cause of their resistance

to change. I will recommend a cross functional team to address all the

concerns and determine what features of the old software are important and

should be included in the new purchase. Through this group, I will be able

to learn what are the variables that are behind their behavior, and share

with them those of the procurement department. In the end we should be able

to arrive at a mutually acceptable solution.

The Importance of Organizational Behavior

OB is important because it focuses on the most important aspect of an

organization, the individual person. Management must understand and be able

to predict individual behavior in order to identify ways to change the cause

of the behavior, and therefore change the behavior itself. (Dordrecht,

Nijhof, & Riedijk, 17) This would apply to situations where an

individual, or a groups behavior requires change, or if the organization as

a whole needs to change.

Behavior is more predicable when certain rules, both formal and informal are

in place, because they provide a guide for people to follow. For example,

if the rule is that everyone begins work at 800 a.m. or else pay is docked,

then one can reasonably predict that individuals will begin work on time.

If on the other hand, no rule existed as to the start time, employees would

come in at any time and the organization would be less effective. The

performance of the organization could become inconsistent and unpredictable.

In order to predict the actions and success of the organization it is

important to be able to predict the actions of the individuals.

Life without OB

Imagine working in an organization that does not apply OB techniques. The

employees are unmotivated, but management does not know why. Production

drops because the employees work only as individuals, not as a team. Skill

assessments are not conducted, as a result employees are mismatched with the

tasks they are assigned.

Management needs to care about how employees feel about their jobs and their

work environment. The employees attitudes help create the corporate

culture. The more effective employees are the more effective the

organization, so attention needs to be paid to the individual.

The Power of OB

One of the tools for analyzing behavior is the

Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (ABC) analysis. Dordrecht, Nijhof, &

Rietdijk, explain this tool. Their research focused on ethical behavior, it

can be used for other areas of concern.

An antecedent prompts a behavior which is followed by a consequence.

Behavior therefore is a function of antecedents that precede it and

consequences that follow it. We need to understand the way these elements

interact in order to analyze ethical problems, take corrective actions, and

design work environments and management systems in which ethical behavior

will occur.

This summarizes what the benefits of OB are. Practicing OB techniques will

only strengthen the organization. It does require time and effort on the

part of management, even more so in times of change, but the organization

will receive long term benefits, not short term fixes.

Media

If you order your essay from our custom writing service you will receive a perfectly written assignment on Media. The media has tremendous power to shape the political agenda, shape our images of politicians and policies, and to influence our images of our society and ourselves. From this, the question arises whether it's possible to have an unbiased and objective news coverage. The answer to that is a simple no.

Media content and news coverage is definitely affected by the views, ideals, and interests of those who seek out, write, and produce news and other stories. Take for example reporters. They often have the freedom to interpret and evaluate stories that they are covering. As a result, they have an opportunity to slip in their views and ideals into the news stories. Take for instance the time when Richard Nixon was president. Many Americans as well as reporters felt a certain distrust and dislike for him. Eventually the negative attitudes that were felt by the reporters ended up in the news coverage. Also, take for example Franklin Roosevelt and John Kennedy. The personal friendship and respect that some reporters felt for them helped to generate more favorable news coverage for these presidents.

But at times, with all the freedom that reporters have with the news, it can be questioned whether Americans can separate the facts from the interpretations by the reporters. Since most Americans depend upon the media to investigate wrongdoing, to publicize and explain governmental actions, to evaluate programs and politicians, and to bring out information that is only known by a few governmental insiders, many Americans cannot separate the facts from the interpretations. Most just go along with what is being told, do the accepted thing (be conformists), and don't really take the time to investigate the issues themselves.

Besides reporters, influence by the individuals or groups who are the subject of the news also make it impossible for a news coverage to be unbiased and objective. Politicians are famous for this. They tend to form good relations with reporters in order to shape or manipulate their media images. Competing forces also help to influence the news coverage. They tend to persuade the media to present their own interests as more general or "public" interests. Take for example liberals. They have been very successful in recent in persuading the media to present their environmental, consumer, and political reform proposals as matters of the public interest.

Order College Papers on Media

But the most important factor influencing news coverage is the audience. Since mass media depends upon advertising revenues for their profits the perspective of most advertises (especially those whose products are relatively expensive) tend to want younger, upscale consumers for their ads and commercials. Therefore it is in the upper and middle class segments of the audience whose interest and taste especially influence the media's news, public affairs, and political coverage. This is evident from the topics covered, style of coverage, and from the types of reporters and newscasters who appear on the screen. Take for example the political and social topics in news coverage. These topics mainly appeal to the interests of well-educated professionals, executives, and intellectuals. In recent years the topics have ranged from the nuclear arms race to the cost of real estate. A better example would be the New York Times. According to the article "What makes Mainstream Media Mainstream" by Noam Chomsky the Times are considered a corporation that sells a product. The product being the audience or rather "privileged people." (The privileged people are just like people who are writing the newspapers; top-level decision-making people in society.) Therefore the product of the media, what appears, what doesn't appear, and the way it is slanted will reflect the interest of the buyers and sellers, the institutions, and the power systems that are around them.

Freedom gives the media enormous power. They can make or break reputations, help to begin or end political careers, and build support for or bring together opposition against programs and institutions. Through the freedom of reporters, the influence of groups and politicians, and the audience, it makes it impossible for the news coverage to unbiased and objective.

While Devincis style is somewhat plain and focusing more on the human element, Tintoretto's depiction is much busy, and has spiritual aspects that are clearly visible. Devincis painted his more than a century earlier leaving Tinoretto's style to be more developed, and have kind of a newer look to it because of possible new paint. Friendship

A person known well to another and regarded with liking, affection anf loyalty

Friendship is the term used to describe the relationship between two people. A friendship consists of love, trust and emotion, in my opinion.

In this essay i will share my experiences of friendship, describe the qualities of a friend, the values of friendship and the building of a friendship. My essay will also include quotes on others opinions of friendship and a poem written by Jill Wolf.

What is friendship? Does it really exist? Can someone have one person they can completely trust? I believe such a person exists. I think a friend is a person who keeps secrets and displays unconditional understanding.Friendship does not just happen, it has to perfect over a time.

Developing friendship begins early in life. Siblings and neighbours are probobly the first children a child meets.

Friendship is different between males and females. For a girl a friend is someone who she can confide in and receive advice in a variety of areas. Girls cry on each others shoulders about topics ranging from boys ang having nothing to wear. Being more emotional and constantly needing advice, a girls relationship with her friends is one of vital importance to her. It is a known fact that women live longer and deal with stress better due to talking about their problems rather than acting like boys. Bonds with a girls confidant are very strong and hardly breakable. Honestly, a boys relationship with his friends mystifies me. I believe they have the same relationships as girls do, but with less emotion and in-depth discussions. Boys experience problems in thier teenage years and often deal with them poorly. This is because they often lack the friend they can talk to know matter what.

faithful friends are beyond price; No amount

can balance their worth.

-bible ( old testement ) Sirach 615

Should auld aquaintance be forgot, and

never brought to min ?

- Robert Burns

Freindship is the only cement that will

will ever hold the world together

- Woodrow Wilson

When it comes to my friendships, they are scattered threw various areas of my life e.g. sckool, clubs, were i live. At school i have known 0 of them for about 10 years, we wemt to the same primary school. So i guess you could say we been through alot and know each other pretty well. However i have known my closest friend Stephanie for only 4 years and in my opinion she knows more about me than my friends i have known for 10 years. Its funny how my friendship with Steph seems to be bigger and more important to me than my other friendships and thats how strong our relationship is.

We go most places together, if not everywhere and we use to play in the same football team, but she decided to transfer to another club and that put a dent in our friendship because, 1. she said she wouldnt leave earlier in the year and . I found out from someone else. But thats all in the past now. Next summer our friendship will be put to the limit. Were going on holiday together for weeks. People say that its the worst thing to go on holiday with friends. So i will be impressed if we survive.

Friendship is the one thing in life that cant be bought yet it seems to be the mos valuable. You wont go far in life without friends to be by your side and steer you in the right direction.

Loyalty- doing what one has commited to admist changing circumstances.

Loyalty is a quality that developes our consciousness. Loyalty leads us deep into a situation, through it, and out the other side, emerging as a more developed person.

Loyalty is essential in friendship. Acquaintances become friends through mutual loyalty.

A friend is someone who accepts you as you are, believes in you; doesnt give up on you; forgives your mistakes; helps you; loves you for who you are; makes a difference in your life; never judges; offers support and values you.

In conclusion, i believe, it is no life at all. To go threw life without a person woth whom to share secrets, pain and dreams would be unimaginably dull. Without friends, i wouldnt be half the person i am today. They keep me focused on what is important in life and help me make the right decisions.

Materialism is the theory that physical matter is the only or fundamental reality and that all being and processes and phenomena can be explained as manifestations or results of matter. Basically materialism is the thought that success and therefore happiness can only be obtained if you posses many things, items, or objects. In the Victorian culture, if you did not have large sums of money, rich clothes, and rich friends, you were a nobody. Many felt that without possessions there was no happiness. In Great Expectations Wemmick, Mr. Jaggers' assistant, constantly preaches about "portable property". Generally agreeing with materialism Wemmick liked portable property because it was always with him. And he was terribly dismayed at the thought of loss of the "portable property" as though he would loose a piece of himself.

Clothing served to identify social classes in Victorian culture. "Clothing is a mark of identity in Victorian society. A common man, a laborer such as Joe, wore rough, poorly fitted clothing designed for any of a number of men like him, whereas a gentleman's clothing was tailor-made for him. A suit of clothing becomes to Pip one of the measures of a man." This is evident in Great Expectations when Pip is ashamed of Joe when he goes to Mrs. Havisham's house, even when he wore his Sunday clothes, the best ones he owned (; ch.1). Had he worn his singed blacksmiths apron, Pip could only dread to think of what Estella would say. When Pip first came upon his new found wealth and bought a suit in town people started treating him differently. The second he put it on, he became a gentlemen. Pip pursues "a finer suit of clothes, without regard for what quality of man is wearing it." When Pip attempts to dress up Magwitch to look like a gentlemen he fails miserably, because no matter how you dress something up, it is only as good as what is on the inside.

Mrs. Havisham was even materialistic in a sense. she felt that without all of her decaying wedding paraphernalia, including a once white now yellow wedding dress, people would forget who she was, what she stood for and what had happened to her. Without her things and possessions she did not feel she was herself. She trained Estella to be materialistic as well, but not in the same way. When she first meets Pip, before he became materialistic, she said he was "a common labouring-boy" (54; ch.8) and was disgusted by him. He lacked money, intelligence, and property. She was uninterested in him, I believe for that very reason. She was repulsed by his lack of gentleman type things, like smooth hands and thin soled boots (55; ch.8). She wanted him to be richer and more proper.

Write my Essay on Materialism and Great Expectations for me

Materialism was not only portrayed in this book, it was found all throughout Victorian life and literature. Throughout England people looked to the capital for wealth, success, and happiness. They came there as poor farmers hoping to make a living and possible become part of the upper-class, with money, and happiness. But to their dismay it was not quite as they had hoped. Dickens once said "'it is strange how little notice, good, bad or indifferent, a man may live and die in London'". Craving money, driven by materialism and want, people came to the prosperous city only do discover "The metropolis was too big, it had no soul,". Unless you had money and success, no one would know you, it would not be as it was with Mr. Jaggers, as he walked down the street "he was recognized ever and again by some face in the crowd," (16; ch.6).

A CLOCKWORK ORANGE

In the book, A Clockwork Orange, by Anthony Burgess, there are two different published versions that have provoked a considerable amount of controversy amongst readers and critics. The difference between these two versions is in the endings. The first ending offers a more suitable, more appropriate ending. The second ending takes a profound turn from the main themes that the book revolves around. This is the most important reason why the novel seems to be more complete without the last chapter. Throughout the book, the main character Alex goes through various phases and transitions; first his transition from evil too good, and then his transition back. Chapter twenty thoroughly finishes off the book with a suitably consistent ending. This is the main difference between the two endings that entirely change the book, and its outcome.

The chapter twenty-one ending completely changes the reader's view of Alex. It seems as though the book is set up in such a way that Alex is brought back to his original way of thinking and living. Putting the chapter twenty-one ending in diverts the path on which the book is so clearly set. It is so inordinately different, the reader's first reaction is confusion, and is left with many conceivable questions. From chapter twenty, to chapter twenty-one, Alex has this incredible revelation in which Alex, within just a few paragraphs, matures, and grows up right before the readers eyes. The following quotation is from the very end of chapter twenty-one, where Alex first, fully realizes this momentous transition he has made.

Custom writing service can write essays on A clockwork orange

I kept viddying like visions, lie these cartoons in the gazettas. There was Your Humble Narrator Alex coming home from work to a good hot plate of dinner, and there was this ptitas all welcoming and greeting like loving... But I had this sudden very strong idea that if I walked into the room next to this room where the fire was burning away and my hot differ laid on the table, there I should find what I really wanted... For in that other room in a cot was laying gurgling goo goo goo my son... I knew what was happening, O my brothers. I was like growing up. (10)

Besides the extreme difference that lies between these two chapters, Alex himself actually seems happier at the end of the twentieth chapter. He seems to show a feeling of pride, as if he has overcome this large barrier that has stood in his way, and he has. 'The Ninth, ' I said, 'The glorious Ninth (178). This barrier that Alex has overcome, is all the times that Alex has been abused. Whether the abuse was a exclusively physical abuse, or emotional abuse, (like Alex experienced with the video tapes), he overcame it. Though the twenty-first chapter by no means maintains the same path as the other twenty, it is certainly arguable that the twenty-first chapter, is in fact, the more appropriate ending.

After reading the introduction, it becomes quite obvious that Anthony Burgess had a very clear idea of how he wanted the book to turn out, before he wrote it. There was a definite structure that he had in mind, and having twenty-one chapters, was a crucial component of this structure.

The twenty-first chapter gives the novel the quality of genuine fiction, an art founded on the principle that human beings change. There is, in fact, not much point in writing a novel unless you can show the possibility of moral transformation, or an increase in wisdom operating in your chief character or characters. (viii)

This is a quotation from Anthony Burgess introduction, that explains his personal theory of why this book should have twenty-one chapters, and why Those twenty-one chapters were important, (vi) to him.

Neither of these two ending chapters seems to fully end, and complete this book, the twentieth chapter does a better job of this. It ends the story on a note that Alex has already experienced, and the reader has experienced with him, therefore correlating the end with something familiar, that the reader can easily identify with though the authors opinion on this subject must not go unnoticed and unmentioned, as a reader.

At one point in our lives we all feel that we're not good enough. One of the most common things that we worry about is our weight. The feeling that you're not small enough and have to compare to others is a frequent thought among young girls. They can feel this way because of pressure from others or the media. Being pressured by family and friends to be smaller or seeing all of the models and superstars that are twig thin can make a young girl think she has to be that way. Feeling this way can lead to two very dangerous eating disorders, Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa can start in early adolescence and is the act of starving yourself and compulsive exercising to lose weight. This is caused by someone thinking that they are too big and need to lose weight. It is a very dangerous disorder. Bulimia nervosa is also an eating disorder. This disorder is when someone will binge eat, almost up to 5,000 calories at a time followed by self-induced purging, making oneself throw-up. This can also go along with the use of laxatives. Both disorders can cause drastic weight loss and fatigue. Also delayed ministration. Bulimia can cause weakness, constipation, bloating, swollen salivary glands, erosion of dental enamel, sore throat and scars of the hand. These disorders are more common in girls and women, but can also occur in males too. The disorder can start at a young age and go all the way up to late adult hood.

It is proven that these disorders are highly influenced by environment, including things like media, family and peer pressure. But recently it was discovered that there could also be a genetic link to these disorders. In a research study done by Neil Osterwell it was said that anorexia and bulimia occur more frequently in close family members of

women with eating disorders than relatives of women who have them. It also said that in sets of identical or fraternal twins have sets of genes that may predispose people who inherit them to develop anorexia, major depression or both. One survey showed that with 000 first-degree young adult women with either anorexia or bulimia and a control group with no history of the disease that relatives were 11.4

times more likely to have anorexia than relatives in the control group. It was .7 times greater with bulimia. It was also found that bulimic women had a 1.1 times greater risk for anorexia than others and that family members of anorexic women were .5 times more likely to have bulimia than relatives of people without an eating disorder.

The genetics that tied this all together were the three sets of genes found in a person with a disorder. One set appears to increase your liability to anorexia, one to increase depression and one for both. That is where shared genetic liability comes from, that pocket of three sets of genes. If a person inherits that it could increase their chance of having a disorder. The risk factor of inheriting anorexia is 58% for close family members but one cannot rule out the environmental factors. One thing that was not mentioned in the article is that there is a possibility that an eating disorder could be passed on or influenced more because related people and family members usually share genes and similar environmental influences. Siblings can grow up together and have the same pressure and influences as each other just as close family members can. This can make it that if one of the persons has an eating disorder then it would be more likely to pass it on or influence someone close to them.

It is not totally proven that if you suffer from an eating disorder that you will pass it on to your child. Also that if you have one that you could influence a family member to have one too, but there is always a chance. There is no common cure for an eating disorder and it could take years before someone is 100% better. It is a very hard battle and could cost someone his or her life. The best thing to do is to catch it before you're in too late and always remember no one is perfect.

The movie "Men of Honor" is about a man who enlisted in the navy named Karl Brasher. Karl was stigmatized because he came from a poor black family. His father was a share cropper who wanted better for his children. Karl's goal was to be a naval deep sea diver. When Karl left for the navy his father told him to be the best and never quit even if he had to break a few of their rules.

His socially acceptable goals in the navy were to be either a cook or an officers valet. The navy instituted social control by making him a cook and not giving him a chance to become anything else. Karl became labeled as a deviant by the white navy officers when he jumped in the ocean on the day only whites were suppose to swim. As soon as he jumped into the water the best white swimmer on the boat was sent in to catch him, but Karl was a faster swimmer and out swam him. The navy reprimanded Karl by putting him in the brig. The navy also recognized his remarkable swimming abilities by promoting him to a search and rescue swimmer, but applied social control by not allowing him to bunk with the other white search and rescue swimmers. He still had to bunk with the other black naval enlisted men who were cooks. This was Karl's act of primary deviance.

Karl's secondary deviance was to apply to a naval diving school. When he finally got accepted to diving school after writing many letters, they instituted social control by not letting him inside when he reported for duty. Meanwhile he watched other white naval men who had no problem reporting for duty. Since Karl was already labeled a deviant he simply waited outside until they let him in the diving school. As soon as they let him in the other white students exercised social control by spitting on his shoe and refusing to sleep in the same living quarters with a black man. The instructor utilized social control by leaving him a threatening note on his bunk, pulling him out of bed in the middle of night on his first night, verbally assaulting him, and spraying him with water from a fire hose. All of these things were in an attempt to make him quit and go home.

One day during a training exercise two of the other white students were stuck underwater after the boat they were in started shifting to the bottom of the lake. Karl was already suited up and ready to dive. When the instructor commanded Karl to take off his equipment, so the instructor could suit up to dive down to the bottom of the lake and save them. In an act of deviance Karl refused saying there was not enough time and the instructor could not dive that far underwater due to a previous diving injury. The instructor reluctantly complied and Karl submerged into the water. When Karl got to the bottom of the lake the boat shifted and the other white student got scared and swam away to surface. Karl persevered and saved the other white student's life. When it came time to issue an award for Karl's act of bravery the navy used social control by awarding the metal to the white student who ran away and not even recognizing Karl.

Order Custom Essay on MEN OF HONOR: DEVIANCE

After getting a 4 on his written test all he had to do was complete the final exercise and he would graduate. The instructor again used social control by warning Karl not to show up for the final exercise. Despite the instructor's threat, Karl showed up for the final exercise the next morning. He was already submerged in the freezing cold water at the bottom of the lake when the instructor sliced his tool bag before sending it underwater where Karl was waiting on his equipment. When Karl got to his bag and realized what had happened he started scouring the ocean floor for his tools.

After staying underwater all day and part of the night, Karl completed the exercise. He was near death when they finally pulled him from the water. This act of deviance and perseverance qualified Karl for graduation from the diving school making him a navy deep sea diver.

After graduating Karl wins the respect of the instructor and other students becoming the first black deep sea diver in the navy. Even though Karl was labeled a deviant his deviance brought about social change.

Macbeth: A Tragic Hero

Evil is attainted, not by force, but by self-motivation, the antonymic principle to that of attaining a state of tragedy. In Macbeth, by Shakespeare, Macbeth portrays a wholly evil character. Throughout the story he commits evil by deeds of murder, betrayal, and lies where by the end of the book he accepts his core center of evil, stating his lack of remorse for any of his actions. In the essay entitled "Evil," by Irving Ribner, Ribner uses many fruitful examples from the text to support his chief points of Macbeth being truly evil. Hence to state, Macbeth personifies anything and everything evil, against the belief of him succumbing that of a tragic hero.

One of the defining features that make Macbeth purely evil is his confrontation with it. When the witches first appear in Act 1 of the play, Macbeth voluntarily confronts them, complying with evil in the very beginning. "They [the witches] do not, however, suggest evil to man…for the impulse to evil must come from within man himself." (Ribner 47). This is the first sign of him owning demonic tendencies, when he allows the evil from within, transform from superego to conscience. Later, in Act 4, Macbeth then returns to the dark women once again, conforming to evil. "I conjure you, by that which you profess, howe'er you come to know it, answer me." (Shakespeare 61). Symbolically, this shows Macbeth summoning evil within himself and exploiting it by means of seeing the witches. From this it is shown that Macbeth can most definitely not be a tragic hero, for he yields to evil alone, with no quality morals in him that tragic heroes must posses.

For the duration of Macbeth, nature or Gaea (mother Earth) symbolized everything holy and good. Whenever evil was committed, nature was disturbed, the land going askew. "It was the owl that screeched, the fatal bellman…" (Shakespeare 8). Here nature was turned awry when Macbeth murders Duncan from aspirations to be crowned king. Murder is also the most unholy emotion that a human may achieve. Only negative emotions such as greed, jealousy, or hatred may propel such a feat. Macbeth commits such a crime, befriending evil itself. "It is Macbeth's knowing and deliberate denial of God and his rejection of the law of nature…" (Ribner 47). As well as rejecting nature, denying God is a sin in itself, which Macbeth concurs to. Macbeth is unwilling to accept nature and anything holy therefore supporting the ideal of his character being purely evil, not a tragic hero.

In Act 5 of the story, Macbeth finally accepts his evil inclinations, non-apologetic for what he's done, his excessive pride getting in the way of any reconciliation he may have. "His voluntary choice of evil, moreover, closes the way of redemption to him, for in denying nature he cuts off the source of redemption, and he must end in total destruction and despair." (Ribner 47). Because of the disproportionate amount of evil he has within him, he his allowed himself no possible way to redeem himself or apologize for what he's done.

Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow creeps in this petty pace from day to day to the last syllable of recorded time, and all our yesterdays have lighted fools they way to dusty death. Out, out brief candle! Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. (Shakespeare 87).

From Macbeth's last soliloquy it is read that his life has amounted to nothing and that no ones ever does. With such depressed last words, he shows no signs of reunion or peace with himself, as a tragic hero would. He feels no remorse, his ego swelling to the last and final blow of his ultimate destruction.

It is to be essentially known that Macbeth was entirely evil, and moreover that Macbeth was not a tragic hero. He demonstrated no characteristics that a customary tragic hero presents. In fact, he demonstrated the very opposing qualities, accepting his individual evil, disturbing nature and defying God, and lastly having no attempt to reconciliation. Macbeth has perfectly acted the part of a solely evil being…nothing more.

All of the characters in Hamlet spy, eavesdrop, use trickery and assemble plots in order to find out what the other characters are plotting. Evidence from Shakespeare's Hamlet demonstrates quite clearly that deception will lead to corruption. Deception acts as a major factor to the characters' downfall. Treacherous acts in this play lead to nothing but trouble. Throughout the play there is a progression of corruption that leads to death.

Deceit plays a major role in Hamlet, causing the deaths of most of the characters in the play. Everybody who dies in the play is either lied to by those who want them dead, or stabbed in the back by those dearest to them. In Act Scene , Polonius agrees to eavesdrop on Hamlet's conversation with his mother by hiding behind a curtain. This act of deception gets Polonius killed because Hamlet stabs the curtain thinking that Claudius was behind it. Laertes is also a participant in deception, although he is unaware, he is a pawn in Claudius' evil scheme to kill Hamlet. Laertes and Claudius plan to kill Hamlet in a cowardly form of deception by poisoning the sword, and drink. Deceit is also the cause of Ophelia's death when she is given the impression that she is no longer loved, by Hamlet, who is just pretending to be mad and really has feelings for her. As proven from above, there are no benefits from deception.

In Hamlet treachery, another type of betrayal, often results in death or punishment. The characters are so distrustful because each one realizes the corruption of their own nature, and think that their fellow men must be the same. The first and foremost case of treachery is the basis of which the play began, Old King Hamlet's murder by his brother Claudius for the crown. This treacherous act opened the door for revenge, which lead to Claudius' death. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were killed due to their treachery, and Hamlet fooled them when they were escorting him to his death, which leads to their own demise. Ophelia was also guilty of treachery to Hamlet which results in his betrayal to her. She agrees to participate in Caludius' and Polonius' plan to set up Hamlet by listening in behind the two-way mirrors. When Hamlet suspects that someone is listening to his conversation with Ophelia, he acts like a mad man and says cruel things, "Virtue cannot so inoculate our old stock but we shall relish of it." (Act , Scene 1) All the promises he had made to her before that day are now broken; and he has now betrayed her trust. Therefore, her act of treachery eventually leads to her downfall for Hamlet pushes her away and when her father dies, she has no one to turn to which made her go mad. Treacherous acts cause a loss in trust and respect, therefore, none will be gained in return.

Throughout Hamlet there is a progression of corruption that leads to death The war going on outside of Denmark only added to the corruption going on inside. "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark," (Act I, Scene 4). It could be interpreted that he is speaking of a threat of war, but when looked at as symbolic, nothing could better sum up Claudius corrupting effect on the kingdom which is brought on by his unpunished crime. Polonius is perhaps the most obviously corrupt character in Hamlet. He's meddling and subversive, as he sets spies on his own son, and finally irredeemably and ultimately fatally corrupt and subversive, as he schemes and plots around Hamlet. His death - physical corruption - is a precursor, signifying to the audience the ultimate fate of all those characters exhibiting signs of corruption.

In situations, as mentioned above, the ones who create the deception, are the ones who fall victim to their own treacherous plan. In other cases, it is the innocence of a person that leads them to their fatality. One thing is clear, Hamlet lived in a world of lies, treason, and cold hearted murder, while all he searches for is retribution. Although he does get it in the end, it comes with a costly price his own life. After all, Hamlet himself best describes the amount of honesty in the world by saying, Ay, sir. To be honest, as this world goes, is to be one man / picked out of ten thousand. (Act ,Scene ). The majority of people in the world are honest most of the time, but it is rare to find someone who is completely honest. For even white lies are a form of deception.

Direct approach is not disguised, the purpose of the study is known to the respondents, or is not a secret. Focus groups and in-depth interviews are forms of direct approach.

Indirect approach disguises the real reason the interview is being conducted. This is usually done when you suspect that the respondents will not offer their real opinions about an issue, or if you think that opinions will get tainted because of a strong opinion in the market or image.

Focus Group

Develop a focus group for regular hotel guests for Sheraton suites at the airport, because of steady decline of customer service scores for the housekeeping department.

Invite eight guests who stay at the same property more than ten times a year. To lure regular guests into this focus group, we have to make them understand that this group's idea will be used to make the hotel a better place to stay. All participants will be given a free weekend stay with family at the Sheraton during the survey.

The moderators outline will be decided by the areas which are the most notoriuos for getting least scores in the housekeeping survey. The moderator needs to focus on those areas. The moderator will also ask the regular guests for some other areas which they think need attention besides the one pointed out in the bad customer service scores. In this manner they can cover almost all the ground.

An Unlovely Creature

Most people enjoy going to a bar and having a few alcoholic beverages once in a while. It can be very relaxing and fun, but no one wants or plans to be excessively drunk. It can be very unattractive and appalling to be drunk, however, there are some people who want to get drunk and stay drunk for as long as they can no matter how degrading it may be. My uncle Joe is one of them. He has spent almost thirty years of his life drinking in bars. He has sabotaged his health and sanity due to alcohol abuse, and he might not ever have a chance to repair himself. He is a hopeless drunk that everyone tries to avoid. There is absolutely nothing appealing about him. His outward appearance and odor make people feel nauseated. Where he lives is even worse. No one, not even the mailman, wants to come within twenty feet of his rundown mobile home. Worst of all, he is very immature. He has the mentality of a ten year-old at the age of forty-seven. He lives his life without self-respect, integrity, or discipline, and has the loneliest life imaginable. Joe's appearance, personality, and lifestyle are very depressing and degrading.

My uncle Joe's body is a case example of what alcohol abuse can do to the human body. His skin is very pale, and it is covered with pockmarks, blemishes, body hair, and freckles. His shoulders are broad but thin, and his back is hunched over which makes his shoulders droop down. It makes him appear intimidating because he is always looking down when he walks, and it looks like he wants to attack someone. He has very long thin arms and legs that are very frail, but he has an enormous potbelly that hangs down to his upper legs. From a distance, my uncle looks like four long wiry tree branches attached to a balloon. He also has an enormous head and neck that are packed with fat. His head and neck look like a watermelon lying on top of two thick pancakes. What is really unhealthy about him is his odor. Since he never takes a shower, he smells like cheap cigarettes, beer, and rotten onions all mixed together, and it can be detected from twenty feet away.

His face is rather uncommon as well, and it is a scary sight to see. It is very coarse and bumpy. He has long wiry brown hair that hangs down to his shoulders and it appears to be glued to the sides of his head. His face is very pale, but he has very dark purple circles around his bloodshot blue eyes, which makes him appear to be half dead. He has two deep scars on his right cheek that look somewhat like gills on a fish. His cheeks are puffed out like chestnuts, but they sag down quite a bit, so it looks almost like he has three chins. He has a short gray wiry beard with a thick gray mustache. When he is angry his face looks like a pile of fat, wrinkles, and gray hair. He is angry almost all the time. He never brushes his teeth so his breath smells like cigarettes and stale beer. His teeth are as yellow as a lemon, and are covered with moldy brown spots. Personal hygiene is the last thing my uncle thinks about.

Joe is even worse when it comes to taking care of his own home. It appears as if it could fall apart at any minute. He has a fifty-year-old mobile home in a very secluded rural area that is surrounded by trees instead of houses. Old empty beer cans and bottles that are lying in long, brown blades of dead grass also surround the house. It is a small box-shaped one-room mobile home. It used to have a white coat of paint on it, but now it is so tarnished with dirt it is brown with white spots. Most of the windows have long cracks in them. The inside of Joes' house is very dark and humid. The smell of stale beer, sour milk, and urine linger around the house. The house is almost bare. There are two plastic chairs, a bed, a T.V., and a small refrigerator, which are all covered with dirt, green fungus, and black cigarette burns. He does have a couple of pairs of light blue jeans and two gray t-shirts laying on the side of his bed which he uses as a pillow, and they are covered with beer stains and cigarette burns as well. Most of his house has a thin coat of beer stains and green fungus. The tile floor has countless cracks in it, and it is covered with cigarette ashes, beer stains, and dirt. The wallpaper bears all kinds of stains, burn marks, and tears. Worst of all, there are roaches crawling around in the sink. Joe does not care about the upkeep of his house and it is because of a lack of discipline and lack of maturity.

The most degrading aspect of my uncle is his behavior because he is the most self-centered, immature, and belligerent person I know. It is very embarrassing to be out in public with him. He will pick on me by calling me names like "moron" and "stupid punk kid", but if I try to tease him he will get very defensive and try to push me or slap me. He is not afraid to push anyone out of his way, and if they say something he will try to start a fistfight. When he is at a bar he enjoys belching out loud and shouting absurd comments like "ALLRIGHT" or "WOOHOO" really loud. Whenever a woman walks by him he is always sure to let her know how great her butt looks, but he will also try to insult her by telling her she has an ugly face or too many pimples. He really likes calling people "fat bastards". If he is waiting in line at a grocery store or a bank he always has to say, "come on you fat bastard, hurry up!" My uncle thinks it's funny to hurt other people, and he cannot see how it has affected his life.

It is very hard for me to see my own uncle live like this. When I see him drinking at a bar or when I look at his decrepit mobile home I feel very sorry for him, but I have learned something from him. He has definitely taught me a lesson about discipline and self-respect. Watching him has motivated me to take action in my life. I realize how important it is to clean up after myself, respect others, and find a career. I hope he can find a better life for himself, but it probably won't happen until he quits drinking.

It is hard-pressing to think of many organizations in America that are fighting for the benefits of the entire population. In every instance, even with organizations as seemingly good-natured as one that, for example, converts abandoned warehouses into parks, certain groups will not be happy with the result. Perhaps a private firm had plans to build a shopping complex in the area. From this, it could be inferred that there is no such thing as a public interest group, only individual groups fighting for private causes. This is not the case, however, as will be evident when I define understanding of a public interest group, and compare this public interest group structurally to the format of a regular interest group, noting differences in funding, membership, and motives.

For an interest group to be public, it must seek some collective good, but not selectively and materially benefit members of the organization. This is not to say that every public interest organization has to be fighting for the betterment of the entire population. It just means that the end results of the organizations work must not be subtractive to its non-targets. If, for example, an organization receives a grant from the federal government to increase funds for technology in all public high schools in the state of Kentucky, there has been a depletion of public resources in order to benefit the Kentuckian teens. Thus the organization is not a public interest group. If however another organization receives a grant to increase technology at public libraries across the country, public goods are increased remains intact and the interest group is public.

Because those affected by public interest groups receive the benefits whether or not they support the organization, funding must come from a third party. This third party is usually a foundation or collection of foundations that believe in the cause the organization is fighting for. With the foundations providing the monetary backbone, these P.I.G.'s must be careful not to succumb to the pressures of these foundations seeking restitution, while at the same time keeping them happy enough to continue sending in money. Interest groups, on the other hand, depend more on the support of individual members. Successful interest groups are able to offer selective benefits to members in order to encourage support. Giving discounts or sending out newsletters and magazines are all examples of selective benefits. These benefits serve not only as a way to continually receive money from long-time members, but also put pressure on non-members to join in order to join in on the benefits. Because public interest groups don't have this option, they rely on media coverage and mass mailings to encourage public participation.

There is controversy over whether the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Foundation, or MALDEF is a public interest group or not. MALDEF hires high-power attorneys to fight Mexican American causes like improved schools in heavily Chicano-populated areas. Under the laid out definitions, it appears to be a public interest group. The cost of membership is zero. If you are a Mexican American citizen, then the organization is going to be fighting for your interests no matter if you send them money or not. It can be argued that since MALDEF is targeted at bettering the lives of Mexican Americans and not the rest of the population, the collective good is not met. However, the goal of MALDEF is to erase past discriminations of Chicanos, like bringing their education up to par with the rest of the population, not giving them superior facilities. Even though MALDEF targets only a certain ethnicity, equal education benefits the population as a whole.

Both public and non-public interest groups, no matter what they say or do, are not going to make everyone happy. As David Hume puts it, "Men fight for their interests, but their interests are up for interpretation." This is due to our self-interested tendencies. Often our vision of the public good is clouded by our own interests. Public interest groups manage to remain by not interfering with our self-interests by remaining non-subtractive. This way progress can be made without ruffling the feathers of the status quo.

Equal rights for minorities, especially women, in a civilization can strengthen a country internally but equal rights do not guarantee peace or the long term success of a country. Athens, for example, did not give equal rights to minorities, but that did not lead to its collapse. Correspondingly, today, many more women have rights but countries still go to war. And, furthermore, since two thousand years ago we have learned that a woman's contribution in the American society is very important and equal rights will strengthen a country.

During its Golden Age, Athens neglected to give minorities, particularly women, equal rights and opportunities. However, that did not lead to the end of Athens Golden Age. In Athens women were not allowed to be philosophers or politicians, which prohibited them from becoming powerful and influential leaders in the eyes of Greece. Nevertheless, without equal rights Athens still flourished. Some people may even say that ancient Greece and Athens' basic principles are still alive today, for example the teachings of many philosophers such as Socrates. Whether or not women had equal rights during Athens' time, is irrelevant. Greece still may have been over thrown by the Spartans, and Athens still may have gone to war with out Percales leading the way. Even today in America women have equal rights but we are still going to war.

Today many more women around the world have equal rights but countries are still collapsing and they are still going to war. Condaleezza Rice, for example is the National Security Advisor, so she might suggest to President Bush that America should go to war. Rice, being a woman, has rights and holds a key leadership position in our country. In 00, women are holding powerful positions in the government and they have equal rights but America has still been facing hard times. For example since September 11 the stock market has been declining which is not a woman's fault, let alone a single persons' fault. In America, since 10, women have had rights and they hold the power to vote and be part of the government. Since 10, America has still been going to war, proving that women's rights can only make a country strong.

In the last two thousand years we have learned that a woman's contribution is significant in American society. Americans have also learned that equal rights will only strengthen our country and make it a better, more democratic place for people to live. Equality has allowed men and women to share rights and responsibilities in and out of the home. Plenty of women today manage the home while they hold a job. In Athens, women would not be able to even leave the house and men would think that their main job is to manage the household. By giving women equal rights in and out of the home America now has a fuller democracy where many different opinions are heard. Before women had theses rights in America, the democracy was all men and only a few different ideas were heard, and now with women in the democracy many different Ideas and thoughts are voiced. Because women have equal rights and they are entitled to be an integral part of society, they can now spend their time and energy on making America, as well as the world around them a better place to live, rather than spending energy on fighting just to be heard. For example I know an amazing women who is spending her time gathering congregations from around New England to get people to help build houses for Habitat for Humanity. She herself is on her third house. Therefore, equal rights for women are very important if you want a strong government and an all around good place for people to live.

Equality for all people, including women, in a civilization is very substantial and can strengthen a country internally. However, equal rights do not guarantee peace or long term success of a civilization. Take Athens for example, the Athenians did not give women rights but that did not necessarily lead to its collapse. Also, today, more and more women are getting rights all through out the word but countries are still going to war and they still may collapse. Further more, Americans especially have learned that a woman's contribution in a society will help to strengthen a country and make is a wonderful place to live.

Many people think of only one type of child abuse. The term abuse covers a wide range of behaviors that may or may not involve actual physical abuse. Some are physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, forced confinement, neglect, abuse towards pets or property, spiritual abuse, witnessing abuse, and financial abuse (Wise 5). The four main types of child abuse are sexual, physical, emotional, and neglect.

Sexual abuse is the employment, use, persuasion, inducement, enticement, or coercion of any child to engage in, or assist any other person to engage in any sexually explicit conduct or simulation of such conduct for the purpose of producing a visual depiction of such conduct. Sexual abuse is also the rape, statutory rape, molestation, prostitution, or other forms of sexual exploitation of children, or incest with children (Pride 18).

The National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect defines child physical abuse as "The physical injury or maltreatment of a child under the age of eighteen by a person who is responsible for the child's welfare under circumstances which indicate that the child's wealth or welfare is harmed or threatened." (Sanders 0). Physical abuse includes pushing or shoving, slapping, biting, kicking, choking, hitting, punching, stomping or throwing objects (Sanders 4).

The National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect defines child neglect as "failure to provide for the child's basic needs." (Sanders ). Neglect can be physical, educational, or emotional. Physical neglect includes refusal of or delay in seeking health care, abandonment, expulsion from the home or refusal to allow a runaway to return home, and inadequate supervision. Educational neglect includes the allowance of chronic truancy and failure to a special educational need. Emotional neglect includes such actions as marked inattention to the child's needs for affection, refusal of or failure to provide psychological care and permission of the use of drugs and alcohol. The assessment of child neglect requires consideration of cultural values and standards of care as well as recognition that the failure to provide the necessities of life may be related to poverty (Sanders 6).

Emotional abuse is the act or omission by the parents or caregivers to a child that have caused, or could cause, serious behavioral, cognitive, emotional, or mental disorders (Ackerman 55). In some cases of emotional abuse, the acts of parents alone without any harm evident in the child's behavior or condition, are sufficient to warrant child protective services to intervene. For example, the parents/caregivers may use extreme or bizarre forms of punishment, such as confinement of a child in a dark closet. Less severe acts, such as habitual scapegoating, belittling, or rejecting treatment, are often difficult to prove. (Cain 7).

Emotional abuse is the core of all forms of abuse, and the long-term effects of child abuse and neglect in general stem mainly from the emotional aspects of abuse (Cain 1).
